Re: Posting Schedule - Week of July 6, 2014

I also liked the advantage/disadvantage system, and the option for casting a spell as a ritual.

Reading through the basic rule set though, I realize it feels very similar to 3.5 ; perhaps too similar to make the switch worth the investment...

It looks interesting enough that I'm going to take a peek at some torrents. What I see determines if I'll buy in.

Re: Posting Schedule - Week of July 6, 2014

Looked at the Basic Rules and now the starter set.

Pros:
I like the simplicity of the rules, seemed more streamlined than the 3.5. Maybe that's a function that this is all beginner info
Like the advantage/disadvantage
Like how catrips are dealt with.

Cons:
What you mentioned, I have so many Pathfinder books now, and I enjoy the richness of the world. D&D may eventually get there, but we're still waiting on the Player's Handbook (confession: I've already pre-ordered all three new books).

I guess I'm taking a wait and see approach still. There are things I really like, but not sure its enough to get me to switch over... yet.

Re: Posting Schedule - Week of July 6, 2014

After the 4th edition Wizards lost a lot of clout. Now there are much more aggressive fish in the pond. Fantasy Flight and Paizo are just to examples. While they are still the big kid on the block, from what I have seen, its the same thing, just different enough to seperate it from 4th edition.

While the new rules and "stuff" might seem nice, I have Pathfinder for that. And seriously, it ain't anywhere near "fun" enough for me to give up on hoarding 40k RPG's from Fantasy Flight. If I want to play D&D I have AD&D, 3rd and 3.5 editions, plus the Pathfinder. Which pretty much covers what the new edition of D&D brings to the table.

The problem with Wizards is that its the same, pardon my french, shit, all over again. Right after the books are released we'll probably get a Forgotten Realms book release which will be like "Oh look, things happened, now it's not the same anymore" but it will be. And if that brings in some attention they will maybe touch up other settings, come up with a new one like Eberron, or just go bat-shit insane and try to rewrite Planscape.

Wizards have became like the tabletop RPG equivalent of video game AAA industry. Edition after edition they "polish" up and release a new version only for it to end up being the same game, just more "brown-ish".

Been there, done that, don't want any. I'll be over here blasting heretics for the Emperah! for the foreseeable future.

GM:
First, in your PMs, could you check and make sure you have at least the following threads in your PM mailbox:
...
Something titled along the lines of "[PC's name] Discussion Thread" or "Idle Discussion Thread" or for certain smarty-pants who will go unnamed "Wild Yammering Thread."

Not that I would have any knowledge, but it would seem to make more sense if that was "Yammering Wid" thread.

But not being the unnamed person, how could I know.  Yes, indeedie..

Posting Schedule - Week of July 20, 2014

The posting schedule has been posted in the Game Announcement notice thread.  I didn't get to as many in-character threads as I had hoped, as I ended up spending more time than anticipated trying to clean out my multitudinous PMs.

Back again tomorrow.

Finished for tonight

Charan, Josep and Tandro -- apologies, but I've spent too much time watching Major Crimes tonight.  (They better not kill of Julio.  But Fritz is da man).  You guys will get a post tomorrow morning, moving you to your next assignment from the Lady.

And no, she won't be asking.

Re: Finished for tonight

If anyone's curious on how the classes are shaping up for 5E, you can check out this magical alpha draft of the Player's Handbook. Obviously things are going to be changed from here, but it does align pretty nicely with the Basic rules.

Well, technically, Drow were "baseline" in 4e too... so were all races though.  There were no level-adjusted ones.

I mean 'right there in the PHBI' baseline. Rather than 'stuck off somewhere in a supplement'.

Re: Finished for tonight

When I first started ADD, I was told drows (or rather "elfes noirs") were a legend, and I think they should have stayed that way. Filthy magic-resistant spider fetishists...

5E looks good... I'm not sure I'll be eager to switch though. I've grown quite satisfied with PF.

Also, I don't like Tiefling and Dragonborn, and I'm only mildly content about Warlock as a base class.

Kellendil:
Well. Perhaps Donato could ask you more questions in exchange for the spells you seek.

Very nice of you! Although I must say I'm not sure what more to ask... Would you and Elijah like to brainstorm on it?

Perhaps something we should know about his strength or allies? The kind of opponents we should prepare to face? The terrain we are likely to run into?
Or ask her to tell us a story about the Red King?
I'm not sure... And I clearly don't want to trade an insignificant information for Greater Scrying and Simulacrum.

On a metagame level, please keep in mind that the NPC is not all-knowing. Depending on the level of specificity of your question, she may not be able to give the information you request.  The answer might be "I don't know."  But in her mind, that doesn't mean you get to ask another question -- you got your answer either way, whether it is useful to you or not.

Heh.  She didn't name particular spells, just that she been taught something new from particular schools that only a wizard of 12th or higher level can cast.

Question

Can anyone think of any possible reason for me to keep the old OOC threads?  The game now has three pages of threads, with all the "CLOSED" things (and a few GM-only threads where I store info), and I'd like to trim it back to two.  Simply deleting the old OOC threads is easiest way to get me back to two pages (though that will be useful only for a little while).

It will drop the overall message count for the game, re-opening the possibility for someone to reclaim Message No. 15000.

Re: Question

Anyone wanna roll for Archpater Salvatore in Amira's/Tristan's/Euron's thread:

  • Will he make his fortitude check against the hags' horrific appearance? -- Roll d20+7 at DC 14 (and put in reason for roll field that this is for the horrific appearance) and let me know.  If he fails, also roll 1d6 to tell me how much STR damage he takes.
  • Roll d20+4, d20+4, and d20+4 to tell me whether the hags make a will save against a spell the Archpater is trying to cast.

Have to catch a train, so will post for all the NPCs in that combat scene when I get home.

Well I've used the D/L command to copy everything off-line and saved them as .pdfs.  If anyone has a burning need for copies, I can upload to something like DropBox or Google Drive; if no one does, in a month or so I'll likely delete the .pdfs just to get rid of them.

Because of deletion of old OOC threads, total message count for the game is now below 13,000.
