[Unofficial] RPoL Mobile App Discussion Forum

An open discussion forum for all things RPoL and mobile.  I developed an Android notification app a while ago.  I figured I should create a place to discuss the topic of updates and to make announcement that are easily accessible to RPoL users.

Currently there is no Apple iOS app that I'm aware of.  If someone want to make one, feel free to join the party and discuss.  I'm keeping it platform independent so we can all share similar ideas.

Just a reminder the app is not endorsed or supported by jase or the RPoL moderators.  It is an unofficial app.

2.00.00 Android App Updated - Code rewrite, bug fixes and new features
Login Screen: There are several people that have installed the app and were unaware they needed to hit the menu key and register. I finally made a screen that makes this part work like you would expect.

Show Password: Their is a check-box to show your password for those that have trouble typing. Also, the app no longer saves your password to the phone. After logging in, it saves the RPoL session cookie and discards the password.

New graphics: First.. Launcher icon. It now uses the RPoL "impossible cube" instead of that ugly red d6 filler graphic I had. The login screen also has the familiar banner graphic (with unofficial stamped across it). Even more fun... As notifications arrive for each game, the app now looks up and cache a copy of your players portrait. For Honeycomb and newer, it's used as the large icon for your notifications. Currently it will only download these once, you would need to clear all of the apps data to flush them out if you change character portraits.

Quiet Hours: You can now specify a range of time to have Lights, Sounds, and Vibrations turned off.

Multi-Browser Support: With a check box, you can force the app to always prompt you to choose a browser (for those that bounce around a lot, or prefer one for RPoL, but not as a default).

LED Settings: For those that have hardware that supports it, you can now specify what color your LED should blink. You enter a hex value, Red (FF0000) Green (00FF00) Blue(0000FF).

Bug Fixes:
Vibration actually works now. HOWEVER... you will want to change that setting if you already have the old version. I put a ridicules vibrate pattern in the initial release, and since it didn't work I forgot to take it out.

Special Characters in game titles are decoded (actually already fixed for v1 users as well, it was a server thing, I needed to urldecode the game titles from the feeds.)

05/31/2013 - If notifications have stopped for your device, unregister and register. This can be performed within the app, or you can remove and reinstall. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I have a suggestion/featurerequest involving the layout. It seems to me that there is wasted space on a small screen (mobile devices), for the Game Menu screens. I wonder how difficult it might be for the m.rpol.net domain to have the "Latest Comment" column swapped with the "Author" column?

So then the Game Menu screen would look something like the following:

Either way, with limited screen real estate, having the pertinent info (that is, after all, the whole reason we want a mobile app) quickly and easily viewable, much more desireable.

Here's why:

For many people using the mobile app, they use it as an alert for updates. If the columns were layed out as I propose, it would me much easier for a person to look at the screen and see which threads had new comments, and who made them and how long ago... this would be especially useful for folks who use both the regular website as well as the mobile version and play in several games. If we are already in a game, we don't need to be reminded who the author is all the time, so that info should go at the end (far right) on the mobile version of the site. The regular site could change or stay the same, doesn't matter because on a full screen (ie laptop) you can see the entire menu, which is not so much the case with a smartphone...

Clear as mud? ;-) Thanks for the consideration.

Didn't know if anyone else was having a problem recently or if it was just me.  It seems the app logged me out, no biggie, except when I try to log back in, it says that the server registration has failed.  Didn't know if perhaps it was offline for maintenance or if it had a recent update and, as usual, my devices are so antiquated that the app is no longer compatible.

Sorry for the unexcusably long delay in getting this back up and running.  The server was a low priority if I'm honest.  I haven't played on RPoL for a long time now.  Also, it was summer, we had a family vacation and I got wrapped up playing Minecraft with my kids.  I just never got around to getting things back up.

the Android notification app is back up now.  It's a band-aid solution to hold you all until I can properly rebuild my VPS.  If it doesn't just start working, then chances are you'll need to clear the app and re-setup.
