The Wonderful Worlds of Ghibli
Almost every Studio Ghibli film ends in an uplifting way. The lovers are reunited, or sometimes they're not. But it's okay. The heroes always grow up a little, and they tend to live happily ever most of the time.
Imagine, if you will, that their stories go on even after that happily ever after. Or not so happily ever after.
Imagine, if you will, that one day, in the midst of their ordinary lives, days or years after their story came to a close, they heard a bell ringing.
Funny, your heroes think.
There's no clock tower or chapel nearby. What is that? Moments later their world goes dark.
When your heroes awake, they're in a strange place most don't remember being before. It is a place full of shallow water, with small islands rising here and there, with houses or shops on them. A train runs through the area. Your characters are on one of the many islands and its their job to find to find their way home.
Will you help your heroes or hinder them? Only time will tell.
