[Pathfinder] Strange Aeons Adventure Path

From product page for "In Search of Sanity":

Waking Nightmares

The Strange Aeons Adventure Path begins with "In Search of Sanity," a mind-shattering foray into horror where the heroes awaken within the walls of the eerie Briarstone Asylum, their minds wracked and memories missing. Working together to recover their missing time, they soon learn that their amnesia is but a symptom of a much greater cosmic menace. As they struggle to retain their sanity, the heroes must ally with other asylum residents and fight against the monstrosities that have taken over the building and plunged it into nightmare. Can the adventurers defeat the terror that stalks the halls and free themselves from their prison of madness?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path launches the Strange Aeons Adventure Path and includes:

  • "In Search of Sanity," a Pathfinder adventure for 1st-level characters, by F. Wesley Schneider.
  • A double-sized article that peers into the dangerous realm of the Great Old Ones and Outer Gods who make up the Elder Mythos, by James Jacobs.
  • A dollmaker's macabre secret in the Pathfinder's Journal, by Jason Keeley.
  • A collection of weird and frightful new monsters, by Eric Hindley, James Jacobs, Jenny Jarzabski, and F. Wesley Schneider.

I'm running In Search of Sanity for my home group, and thought I'd also enjoy another take on it.  As such, I'm going to run a version on here.

As a warning, characters in Strange Aeons start out in an asylum with no memories.  No memories at all.  They don't come back during the first book of the AP, either, so don't think it's a quick turn around.  As such, a backstory is... really impossible for this game.  It also means you're playing a blank slate with no connection to anyone else, except for a vague sense of camaraderie you get from looking at your fellow party members.

Please read the two notices in the game for details on the (light) RTJ requirements and the somewhat more complex character creation requirements.

In reply to bmsattler (msg # 2):

That is likely correct - at 6 players already, applications are probably closed intentionally.

Pathfinder - Strange Aeons Adventure Path

For the uninitiated, replying to threads in Wanted - Players is usually a fairly useless gesture.  It doesn't bump the thread and most GMs don't check back here after they post the advertisement.  Unless they're coming back to request more applicants, like I am now.

Anyway, attrition set in and we lost two players in the first month.  Four is enoguh to run the game, but attrition is always an issue, so I'd like to add one more player (but will possibly accept two) as a buffer against that.

As long as the "wants players" flag is up and the RTJ thread still says "Open", I'll consider your application.  I try to do a "soft close" on applications to let stragglers that started working have a bit of time to finish, but if I get a freakish deluge of applicants, I may not have that luxury (I'm only recruiting for a tiny number of slots, after all).

The game has barely started, with two scenes and a not-combat behind the party.  The current party composition is listed in the RTJ thread, in game.  The character creation rules include a few variants, and they're listed in the obviously titled thread, in game.

Pretty much all of the specifics listed in the original post in this thread still apply.

Pathfinder - Strange Aeons Adventure Path

Attrition has again dwindled the ranks.  Right now, the party consists of:

Chirurgeon Alchemist
Wild Whisperer Druid
Abomination Psychic
Warpriest of Iomedae

We're looking for 1-3 players to round out the group, with the desire for at least one melee-focused character.  The new PCs will be level 2 and will enter play in approximately a week of posting time (maybe two if things really drag on).  The PCs will still have amnesia.

Applications will be accepted for at least the next 4 hours to give folks a fair shot at applying (and if I don't get enough solid applications, I'll extend the window).  I'm only requesting a name, concept, and a very short writing sample, so it's not a big investment of your time.

EDIT: I'm closing things down at the 4 hour mark (in ~10 minutes).  Response has been strong and I know I'm going to have to reject or waitlist about half of the applicants so far.  Thank you for your interest.

Pathfinder - Strange Aeons Adventure Path

So, attrition has again dwindled the ranks, leaving it remarkably similar to the last time I posted here.

Chirurgeon Alchemist
Abomination Psychic
Warpriest of Iomedae
Mindblade Magus / Fighter

I'm looking for 1-2 more people to round out the group.  I'm pretty open to most Paizo concepts that don't scratch that fringe of "why is this legal", but keep in mind the amnesia aspect of the game.  There are still a few chances for me to work in replacement players using the default schtick and I'm going to use every one of them.

Also be aware that I don't play out filler combats.  If a combat isn't a major challenge (and most aren't), we're using a simple attrition system to resolve results and move on with our lives.  There will still be major combats (at least 3 left in the first book of the AP), but you're not going to have a surprise fight with two dire rats at third level.  Some people don't like this, and that's fine... but it's how I'm doing it in order to keep the game moving at a reasonable pace.

There's still about half of Book 1 to go.

I always RTJs open for a set window and then review them.  If you send in a complete RTJ within the next 15 hours (by 8:00 am EDT), you will be considered equally for a spot.  If you don't get picked but had a complete RTJ, you'll be offered a spot on the waitlist.  I try to contact people on the waitlist before going out for more applicants.

Pathfinder - Strange Aeons Adventure Path

Despite my reservations about recruiting for the game right now (it's awfully close to the end of the year, and I'll be out a bit in early January for a medical thing), the game has reached a point where it's easy to insert new people and we've dwindled back down to three.  The current cast is:

Chirurgeon Alchemist
Warpriest of Iomedae
Mindblade Magus / Fighter
Some sort of ranger (in the creation process)

I am recruiting for two characters that aren't the same as the above.  I'm not picky on classes (though Paizo content only).  I do fairly strongly prefer that races skew toward human or at least Core, given the game's setting.

Full consideration will be given to all applications completed by 1p EST today.  If turnout is especially light, I will post an extension in the RTJ thread.
