The Clans Await You!
For over 300 years, the clans have lived upon the mountain. Removed from the evils of the world below, they built their communities upon the old ways; traditions brought over from the islands (U.K.). They forged an alliance with the mountain and adapted their knowledge to that of their new home. The towns’ people below shunned them and in time the two worlds completely separated, cut off by the vast mountain forest. Generation after generation, born and buried upon the mountain, lived in peace among the other clans…mostly. Progress, however, and the modern world would inevitably come knocking.
The world you know is now being threatened from all sides. The town below, long steeped in an economic downturn, is beginning to grow tired of the clans’ raids. A coal mining outfit has moved into the area and is pushing to take the mountain, stirring both law enforcement (the mountain lands are not owned by deed) and the locals (desperate for work) against you. On top of that, a new bren'in (leader) has been chosen and some of the neighboring clans are none too thrilled. It would seem that war is on the horizon.
“The Mountain” is a home-brewed game based upon the lore of “Outsiders”, a television program on WGN. Knowledge of the show is not necessary to play but it certainly helps. The game takes place in modern times and focuses on communities living on and around Shay Mountain, a fictional land feature based in the Kentucky Appalachians. The communities in which you live are extremely old school and abhor modern society and its’ contrivances (only a handful of clans use anything modern, i.e. small generators, ATV’s, the occasional firearm, etc.). They live a simple existence honoring nature and the great mountain.
