Gritty sci fi drama
I'm looking to run a small group, or a couple of solo players to run alongside each other.

It'll be Freeform. Though I'm open to borrowing ideas & mechanics from published systems as needed - like Stars Without Number and Coriolis, among others.

The setting is based on a book series, but you don't need to have read it. I'll paint the picture of the setting as best I can, through play. I'll answer any/all questions if asked :)

The game will be plot driven, focusing on characters & choices to events, rather than combat or nitty-gritty-esque simulationist action (like survival skills, hunting, repairing, or chasing, etc).

What follows is a brief summary of the 3 human factions, and some story seeds for each faction. You can simply choose one of the seeds on offer, or use the information to form your own story seed.

Seed 1 - The Worldforest asks for your help...

The most prominent human world aside from Earth is Theroc, a planet covered in semi-sentient worldtrees that is quietly independent from the Hansa. (The Terran Hanseatic League, known as the Hansa, control most of humanity's planets. They are an extensive commerce-based federation in control of Earth and most Terran colonies.) Therons are ruled by a King & Queen. Theroc boasts lush vegetation and a variety of large insect animal life, and its food and textile exports are considered luxuries across the Spiral Arm. Therons live mainly on biological products, using next to no inorganic materials.

Theroc's "green priests" are able to commune with the trees and communicate telepathically across space when touching a treeling, making them indispensable for instantaneous communication across the galaxy.

Green priests are reluctantly provided to the Hansa on occasion, usually as part of trade deals between the two human factions.

a) You (either a Green Priest, or a regular Theron) have been chosen to investigate an off-world location, and to report back to the Worldforest with your findings.

b) You are a Theron trader, loaded with wares that are seen as luxuries within the Hansa colonies. In a recent trade you accepted information as payment, against your better judgement. A location marker, and a promise of ancient artefacts that would fetch a good price with any collector.

c) You are a Green Priest, assigned to a remote Hansa colony. Your ability to communicate instantaneously through your connection to the Worldforest makes you an extremely important member of the colony. Life at the colony has been good. Up until yesterday, that is...

Seed 2 - Roam for improvement...
The Roamers originated from the Kanaka, the last of the eleven generation ships to leave Earth. Originally intended to arrive on a planet and become colonists, they instead became the Roamers.

Roamers are well known for their fierce independence, as well as their highly innovative (though somewhat dangerous) methods. They are normally referred to as 'Space Gypsies' or 'Roachers'. The Hansa do not think well of them, though they are required to trade with them for ekti, a vital stardrive fuel. This is one of their main sources of income. The Roamers use skymines, ekti-harvesting and processing facilities located in gas giant clouds, to acquire this fuel. They are the main source of ekti for both the Hansa and Ildiran Empire, though they do not have much trade with the Ildirans. They have next to no military force, relying mainly on secrecy to ensure their safety. The Roamer society is split up into multiple clans, their leader being a Speaker. Their 'capital' is at Rendezvous, a site which is kept very secret. They are extremely adaptable and can adjust their equipment and lifestyle to suit various harsh conditions. They rely on others for assistance, products, etc. as little as possible.

a) You are a Roamer pilot leading a trade caravan to remote Hansa outposts & colonies, selling equipment, repairs and stardrive fuel.

b) You are a Roamer engineer, with a fantastic idea for pushing the boundaries of mining & manufacturing, and the Speaker has given her blessing for you to go ahead with this experiment, so crazy, it just might work. Just the Roamer style.

c) You are a Roamer scout/explorer/scientist looking for new opportunities among the stars. Not every system has been scanned, not every moon has been mapped. It's your job to uncover new sites that hold potential for Roamer clans to exploit. Heavy mineral richness, organic havens, or wrecks to salvage... Your eyes are peeled.

Seed 3 - For the good of the Hansa.

The Terran Hanseatic League, known as the Hansa, control most of humanity's planets. They are an extensive commerce-based federation in control of Earth and most Terran colonies. They have a king, but it is uncommonly known the real power lies with the Chairman of the Hansa, who controls the king. They have trade relations with the Ildirans, who gave them the original Ildiran stardrive. Their military is the Earth Defense Forces, also known as the EDF. They use compies, short for competent computerized companion. Compies are intelligent servant robots available in Friendly, Teacher, Governess, Listener, Analytical and other models.

a) You are a special operative of the Chairman. Your mission: to investigate a small scientific outpost that has gone dark, beyond the edge of Hansa territory.

b) You are a colonist, trying to establish a foothold in a new star-system for the Hansa.  The work is hard, but satisfying. Life is tough, but it's about to get tougher.

c) You are a trader, trying to find wealth through interstellar trade. Maybe you smuggle contraban? Maybe you smuggle people? Maybe you're trying to find the Roamer's secret headquarters? Maybe you just want to travel to exotic places to gather exotic goods to sell to rich idiots back on Earth?
