Lords of Gossamer and Shadow: The Sundered City

A game of mystery, scheming, and intrigue.  RTJ and character setup info is available in public game threads, but the story hook is copied here to give a sense of the Gossamer World which I'm intending to be the game's central setting.  Thanks for considering my game!

  • Fourteen years ago, the kingdom of Alethia shattered into civil war.  A deeply spiritual people, the Alethians let theological schism within the Illumined Church spill over into the realm’s noble and merchant classes, escalating into a few tumultuous months of chaotic, bloody open conflict, followed by eleven years of bitterly entrenched cold war.  Sectarian rupture was reflected in the political map as well, with loyal traditionalists consolidating their power in the kingdom’s western regions, the eastern forces led by zealous reformers, and the great Amadine River forming a clear line of demarcation between them, neatly bisecting the kingdom.  Standing astride the mouth of the river, the city of Basilica, the sprawling metropolitan capital of the kingdom, was likewise riven in twain, its two halves glowering at each other in bristling silence from their opposite banks for over a decade.
  • During the eleven-year standoff, the rival factions were led by the Cardinal, a former close advisor to the King who’d been slain in the early violent days of the conflict, and by the Regent, the childless King’s younger brother and only plausible heir.  But on the first day of spring two years ago, there occurred a series of events which fundamentally reshaped the kingdom’s destiny.  After eleven years, the cold war was finally teetering on the precipice of sparking into open battle again, the militias of both factions massed and armed and poised to march.  But that morning, the beloved wives of the Cardinal and the Regent both lost their lives in random accidents, either of which would have seemed tragic but innocent on its own, except for the timing: later the same day, both the Cardinal and the Regent fell to assassin’s knives, within half an hour of each other, in apparently separate and unrelated schemes.  Both of the fallen couples left behind twin children, a son and a daughter each.  And that day, the first day of spring, was their birthday.  All four of them were turning sixteen, the age at which young Alethians of noble breeding traditionally became eligible to be promised in marriage by their families.
  • The voices of those who chose to dismiss these occurrences as merely a staggeringly unlikely conjunction of coincidences were a small minority.  Somewhat more common were those who saw the work of some powerful conspiracy, steering the kingdom at knifepoint from the shadows towards unknown and nefarious ends.  But the general consensus arrived at by nobles and commoners alike was the same one that oracles of the Illumined Church on both sides of the Amadine came to independently: it was obvious that the gods had made their will plain, and taken a direct hand in mortal affairs.  The new season was to mark a new beginning, led by the new generation.  The civil war had to be ended, the kingdom reunited, the broken city of Basilica made whole again, bridges mended both symbolically and literally.  And so the surviving leadership of both factions convened to formulate a plan in acknowledgment of divine command: for the twinned twins, twinned betrothals.  The son and daughter of the Cardinal would be wed to the daughter and son of the Regent, the factions interlocked in matrimony, forming a new royal house which would rule over the reunited kingdom.
  • Our characters are those four fiancĂ©es.  In a few days will arrive the first day of spring, your eighteenth birthday, the two-year anniversary of the deaths of your parents and the total upheaval of your lives as you’d known them.  It will also be your wedding day, when you and your sibling will meet your intended spouses for the first time, and assume the responsibility for which you’ve been groomed and prepared these the past two years: heal the Sundered City, guide your people to peace, and ensure the stability and prosperity of all of Alethia, now and forever.  But not everyone in Alethia is thrilled about the prospect of your rule, and hidden within the most extravagant wedding gift in the history of the realm is a mysterious, deadly secret...

A few interesting character thoughts here so far!  I'll be holding the RTJ window open for a while longer here, to make sure we've welcomed the submissions of everyone who'd like to be able to play.  Please feel free to harass me with questions / comments / etc., and thanks again for considering my game!

Lords of Gossamer and Shadow: The Sundered City

Probably last bump here!  I'd like to get started soonish, but there's definitely still space in the setup available to be explored and claimed by others.
