Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

The next morning you prepare to leave. Rocky has informed you that Ezran and the others have left the mansion together and seem to have made plans to travel north. The fact that the necromancer and the temple are both that direction makes you think you will run into them again and Raina is especially sure of it. You get the opportunity to do any last minute shopping or preparations you need and soon you head out.

Fin, your dreams are worsening and you are beginning to get headaches. Sometimes you feel not quite yourself though at the moment you aren't too worried about losing control. Halek has you watched like a hawk anyway so at the very least if something does happen you won't get too carried away.

Meanwhile, Raknesh and Stefan continue to be plagued by shadows that seem to move and the increasing feeling of being watched. Raina does her best to ease your situation but all of her efforts are short lived. It will be a great relief when this is all over. As for the rest of you, Raina proves to be an amiable and pleasant woman who is remarkably knowledgeable, but of course what would you expect from the daughter of death himself? She guides you to the necromancer easily and after a few days of travel a large black tower comes into view. There is a small village at the base of it, though it looks deserted...

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

I was under the impression that the necromancer was only half a day away, but if it'll be a few days.. I'll be traveling on a floating disc performing the Summon Familiar ritual through the first day before offering the second scroll to anyone who can use it to allow me to sleep during the travel on the second day while the newly-summoned Pseudodragon takes to the skies to scout ahead. It will happily dart about, boldly enjoying the benefits of it's new magical link.

As they moved, Raknesh used Rocky as a stealthy scout to check the path before them.

Its 'sight' is a bit reduced, so he had to make circles but it was a good and reassuring measure.

Especially as they arrive close to the black tower.

"Be very careful, rocky. We don't know if and how the tower is protected."

Stefan remained in human form, though as they traveled from the city Kololo the bear had rejoined him.  He muttered something about less strain on his body and mind, but it wasn't clear what he was talking about after a moment, whether it was just a druid thing or if the lack of proper sleep was making the druid a little wacky was debatable.  "I like not the look of this place, we must be cautious." spake the druid, putting a hand on the bears hide.

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

ooc: Oops! Sorry about that Prizzard. I've been dealing with a bit of drama lately so I apologize.
And Stefan, you are awesome ;P

You all search the small village at the base of the tower and between all of your efforts you find the place to be interesting indeed. Prizzard, you don't find much but your familiar relays information to you fortunately. You all discover the buildings are abandoned, probably years ago from the looks of things. It has been heavily looted and what is left is in shambles. There is black ash everywhere though it is not recently made. Inside the buildings you see brown stains spattered on the walls, on the floors, everywhere. What is more disturbing is the strange symbol scratched into the wood. Every building the same, though you have no idea what it means. There is an eerie feeling as you explore and the hair on the back of your neck stands up.

Raina takes Fin aside, looking concerned. Are you certain you are strong enough for this little one? I fear it may be taking too much of you. she puts a kind hand on your shoulder, her beautiful face worried.

Meanwhile Tanzy and Stefan hear something and Prizzard is informed of the same via his Pseudodragon. It sounds like the faintest voice singing. Above you the tower looms ominously and as you approach the base you are able to follow the voice. It appears to be a little girl of about 7, dark of hair and deathly pale. She does not react to you at all, you can't even be sure she sees you but she stands there, looking down and singing a strange sad song you are unfamiliar with.

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

Prizzard, you find that the symbol looks to be incredibly ancient. It is the symbol of an Ancient entity called Gothan, eater of souls. Sacrificing to him was supposed to give great power and long life.

Meanwhile Raina considers Stefan's question. She's not quite dead and not quite alive. She's an abomination. she shudders. The girl disappears inside the tower then, though if she's seen you she gives no indication. This place is cursed. I don't know what that thing was but I-I don't like it. Disturbingly, Raina actually looks afraid.

Loden steps forward then. Well, we need to see this necromancer regardless. Should we go for the...aggressive route?

Fin: Yes, that is an effect of the dark Goddess's evil bleeding to the surface. She twisted men's souls into means to further her power. She left a taint on everything around her and it still holds much power even centuries later. she shakes her head. When this necromancer business is over, I think it will be time to take care of you. You've been through enough.

Meanwhile the tower looms above you, the wind whistling through the empty village, banging the occasional shudder, which is an unwelcome noise in so tense a situation. There are no sounds of birds or anything living though and as you start for the tower you swear you can see shapes of people in the sides of your vision. For Raknesh and Stefan, this is hardly new but for the rest of you it is disconcerting. As you arrive at the door to the tower you find it unlocked but before you can enter you see a gnarled old man shakily headed towards you. His head is bent and he walks abnormally, shaking and moving his head wildly as though in some tantrum. He is leathery and wrinkled as though in the sun far too long. Get out of here! he snarls, moving towards you with surprising quickness.

With the increase of the shadowy figures, Raknesh begins to wonder if coming here was a good idea.  Tense as he is, he has to stop himself from materializing his psychic weapon as the old man hurry toward them.

But drawing weapon might not be the best idea to prove they are not dangerous.
Of course, the fact he literally draws at the speed of thought helps him to make this decision.

Of my people? he starts to cough raggedly from his excitement. Help from him comes with a price far too high to pay. I am here to keep people out! Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

The old man look startled at Prizzard and takes a few steps back from him, looking far more comfortable with Raknesh though he still has a wildness in his eye. Force? You think you can force him!? Look what he did to my village! He is too powerful and he knows it. The best he'll offer you is a deal of some kind and you would be wise not to take it. Whatever plagues you now is nothing compared with what he will exact from you! At this point Raina steps forward and puts a gentle hand on the man's shoulder. He immediately falls down unconscious and she smiles apologetically. I didn't want to have to do that but I have a feeling he would hurt himself trying to stop us she sighs. As true as his words are likely to be, we have no choice. she strides to the door and knocks. To your surprise it opens by itself, revealing a long and winding staircase going straight up. The floor is made of black shiny marble and rows of lighted candles adorn the walls, illuminating the otherwise dark tower. Halek looks uncertain. Are you sure Raina? Is there no other way? she shakes her head. None. And I know of these things better than most.

Should you decide to follow it takes a few minutes to get to the top of the tower. You hear whispers of gibberish and icy fingers brushing past you but Raina tells you to ignore them. She is remarkably unafraid, but being the daughter of death would likely steel her against such things. Once at the top there is another door bu it is open. You see a man of about forty seated on a cushion, looking at finger bones splayed out on the floor. Behind him the girl you saw before sits quietly, looking at a book, seemingly unaware of you. The man barely looks up. You certainly make for an interesting company he muses, still tending to the bones. Death lurks in two of your shadows, quite literally, another is sporting a specter and the little one holds evil itself within and is doing a very poor job of it. he raises his head to study you then. Unless you are somehow happy with this situation I would say you have a slew of problems you want help with. Unless, this is just a social visit? You notice the room is full of dark relics and other tools of necromancy. In the corner on a table is a corpse, freshly dead from the looks of him.

The necromancer looks at the black powder and frowns. What is this? he demands. Behind him you see the young girl in her chair look up at him sharply, as though she wants to scold him but thinks better of it. She smooths her features and goes back to reading though the necromancer himself to your surprise looks almost embarrassed a moment before trying to regain his authoritative demeanor. In the meantime the corpse in the corner starts to shake and tremble. Calm yourself! he snaps at the thing, though his words seem to have no effect and it is hard not to be nervous as it increases its activity. The little girl glares at the corpse in irritation and then back at her book in a dogged effort to appear non interested.

Stefan and Fin, as you watch the encounter you wonder if perhaps the supposed necromancer is not as he seems. The girl seems to be the one in power here, much as they both try to hide it...The corpse by now is growing in unrest. The man looks uncertain as Prizzard approaches, perhaps wondering if it isn't some kind of trap. He starts to say something but suddenly the corpse jerks into a sitting position and its eyes pop open. Meanwhile the supposed necromancer seems to be having troubles of his own. He grabs his arm, twitching and contracting, his fingers contorting into unnatural positions. He looks up at Stefan and Raknesh in shock and fury. H-he wants me to k-kill you he growls in a strangled voice. Stop Hamden! the little girl gets up, looking outraged. He does his best to obey but it is clear it won't last long. As the scene intensifies you can hear the sounds of moans approaching from outside. Should you look out the window you will see dozens of corpses, covered in dirt and half rotten, running towards the tower with alarming speed.

The girl looks at Prizzard and Stefan in surprise but quickly recovers with a glower. The jig is up now and she seems to own it. Hold down that body fool she snaps at the man who had been pretending to be the necromancer. He is quick to obey, even fearful of the child. No, you assume correctly dark one she sniffs at Prizzard. With those two gone the dead will turn towards them, but it will be awhile before they all get the message that this room has been cleared. She looks approving at Fin's actions. That should protect you for a while against the corpses at least, but there are more devious things to fear here... As if hearing her words, you suddenly hear something rattling at the door that Fin has just barred. Moments later something is sliding underneath it, wriggling towards you. To your disgust it looks like flattened, membranous skin with a mind of its own! That is a skin kite. I would be wary of that if I were you.

Raknesh/Stefan: You are able to make it out of the tower surprisingly, but you do find there is a barrier around the village, making it difficult to go too far. Fortunately it is enough that you have room to maneuver but leaving the city at present is not an option. You look down to discover dozens of creatures and even more wandering your way. Some are simple skeletons, others hulking corpses or liches, and many are fleshly rotted bodies come to life. A long string of them have entered the tower already and more are headed that way. It would seem that they have not yet realized that you have left the building...ooc: If you decide to attack make the appropriate rolls please

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

Stefan nodded in agreement with Raknesh as his transformation finished not in the silvery gleam that he normally took, but into a cruel dusky red color, with wicked looking horns and spikes, and a face that conveyed only rage.  His flight was broader and less exact then normal causing him to arc more broadly.  A glow began to emanate in his chest as steam began to curl from his nostrils.  As he arced he blew forth a cone of flame,  his neck arcing forward to ensure that Raknesh was not caught in the blast of heat.

Not trying to leave, but am looking for a better place for Raknesh and stefan to draw the undead.  short of that, just flying about to keep the undead around and not in the tower.  Breath a 60 foot cone of fire doing  14 damage, DC 15 for half damage

Stefan and Raknesh: You both lay waste about you, though in spite of your efforts it seems more dark enemies are on their way. Many of the corpses are down but there are far more nefarious things about. As you turn to ready another attack you see a rotted winged 9 foot tall figure leap into the air towards you... ooc: if you get a knowledge arcane check dc15 you will know it as an angel of decay.

ooc: Next round!

Everyone else: Between Fin and Prizzard (I rolled for you Fin, to save time, hope you don't mind!) the skin kite is fortunately vanquished easily but the girl doesn't seem to care one way or another. I have much nastier things lurking in this tower and they will make short work of that door. her voice is flat. It looks like the only way to preserve my experiments is to help your friends before they destroy everything. But I don't do favors without something in return. Let me see that black powder she holds out her hand forcefully. Should Prizzard oblige she will finally register some shock. Do you know what this is? she gasps. This is made of the essence of the dark goddess herself! The things I could do with such a substance! her eyes are fervent. You have a deal should you still want it. Raina looks a bit uncertain at the exchange but her worry is interrupted by a thunderous pounding on the door. With one blow it has nearly burst already. Ah. That would be Nadred. I suggest you make up your mind quickly, with no control over him we are all as good as corpses and I'm sure at that point we'll all start attacking your friends too. she looks almost amused.

I'll need a few minutes to gather my supplies, and of course when I am ready you will have to call your friends back. I will need them present. Keep Nadred busy won't you? Kill him if you can, otherwise you may be better off running. I suggest you figure out which tactic is best before long or he won't give you much choice she proceeds to start rummaging around for supplies, bidding the false necromancer to help her. In the meantime Fin's rods seem to hold the door in place and in frustration, the attacker decides to go through the brick wall around the door instead, pushing through the stone in fury. It is a large creature seemingly comprised of various body parts put together and you recognize a few of them. It's as if she's taken the worst undead monsters she could find and made one horrid beast out of them. Fortunately the tower is large enough that you have room to maneuver, though should it come to running it could be difficult to escape.

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

Inside: In spite of Prizzard's near slips he does do a great deal of damage to the thing, as does Tanzy and even Loden and Jett do a fair job on their end. Raina keeps a close eye on things but being the daughter of death himself, has determined she had best help the necromancer end this all the sooner. Meanwhile the creature is still going strong in spite of his wounds. As you fight you discover that it is intensely cold around the thing and you can feel the heat slowly draining from your bodies...In the meantime Nadred has started shedding large skin folds off of his body which are are starting to move on their own! Some would recognize these as forsaken shells, the animated skins of the dead. So far only two have dropped but that is enough to give you cause for concern as it will be difficult to fight so many things at once. At the moment they seem to be concentrated on Fin and Loden but his skin crawls in perhaps another attempt to shed more.

ooc: Make a fort save of DC 16. Failure means 6 damage per round of heat drain, success means only 3 damage per round of heat drain. In 3 rounds we will re roll the fort save. Also, for time's sake please make an opposed grapple check Fin along with your attack in the next round.

Raknesh/Stefan: As you try to evade the angel of decay you find that to your dismay it is the faster of you. Though Raknesh's attacks do it quite a bit of harm it is by no means done with you and as it nears it reaches out to attack...Meanwhile he is not the only flying monstrosity coming your way. You can dimly see the shapes of two other forms leaving the ground but at the moment you are so distracted with your current foe it will take a second look to see just what you are about to deal with.

ooc: He's caught up to you now and so you have the chance for another attack before he does his thing...

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

ooc: There's a lot going on here and I've been at this since 5:40a.m. so if I forgot something please forgive me.

Prizzard/Tanzy/Fin: In spite of the massive damage that Prizzard deals the thing, it is still going strong and though it is clearly wounded, it is not nearly as damaged as it should be. The girl looks up from her studies, almost amused. Oh, I forgot to mention, I built Nadred to be...sturdier than most. Sorry about that. In the meantime the creature sees Prizzard as the biggest threat (in spite of Loden and Jett's attacks on it) and with massive claws it slashes at him successfully, the claws burning and stinging as they make contact. You feel they are poison to your very bones and you fight against a great feeling of weakness as you recover from the wounds. At this point there is a spreading puddle of filth emanating from Nadred and it has spread to much of the room, making it difficult to avoid. While this is happening, Fin is being attacked by the forsaken shell skin creature, which has tried to wrap itself around the poor man. Fortunately Fin is able to maneuver out of it's grip but it is clear that the thing is not done with the halfling. During all this Rocky transmits Raknesh's question about the angel of decay to Prizzard. Hearing this, Raina goes to the window to check on things, worry in her eyes.

ooc: If you are engaged with the creature, please roll a reflex save DC24 or take 17 damage from rotting aura. If you succeed you can half the damage (I'll be nice and say only 8). Also, keep in mind your 3-6 points of heat drain damage per round so keep track of that too please.

Stefan/Raknesh:

In spite of both your efforts, the rotting thing is still in action, though obviously hurting. It slams at you with alarming power and speed, claws raking at Stefan and wings slamming at Raknesh, trying to knock him off. It is difficult not to panic as the thing is incredibly aggressive...As this all happens you are vaguely aware of Raina shouting out to you from the tower though you can't make out what.

ooc: Raknesh, make a balance check DC 12 to keep from falling off...

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

Raknesh/Stefan: As Stefan puts distance between you, Raknesh gets a message from Raina via Rocky. I said hold on and get out of the way! she repeats. You see her lean far out of the window and suddenly hurl a violet colored blast of energy at the creature following you. It hits him squarely and it shrieks in agony as the power wraps itself around him and slams him down violently into the ground. You barely have time to celebrate though as you can see two more coming your way. Fortunately Stefan has put enough space between you for the moment that you have the chance to plan a bit better. You can do a ranged attack if you wish as you have another round or so before they get to you. You can also continue to evade.

Everyone else: As the fight battles on you see Raina lean out the window and hurl an enormous violet blast of energy even as she calls back, Everyone alright in here? her voice is stressed. The necromancer looks up with a frown and gestures to the man who had been helping her. Go see what you can do about Nadred will you? He nervously draws a black blade and joins the fray. Fin manages to strike his opponent both times with his attacks and it roils in pain but looks angry as it moves to attack, slapping at you with its skin but barely missing. Loden is doing well with his enemy and Jett decides to join you in attacking yours. So it's Loden vs Forsaken shell, Fin and Jett vs forsaken shell and Tanzy/Prizzard/fake necromancer guy on Nadred.

Unfortunately Prizzard's attacks miss but luckily so does Nadred's, who once more reaches out to the biggest threat. By now his filth is spreading and you can feel the cold trying to draw the heat out of you again...

ooc: Once again make a reflex save on rotting aura and a fort save on heat drain then post your next round please. Tanzy, since you didn't post for this round yet please just do two rounds this time to catch up. When we're all on the same page we'll start accelerating things a bit :)

Raknesh: You narrowly miss them with your attacks, though one of them does hit squarely, much to your satisfaction. They will be upon you any moment now and two of them against you is rather worrisome. I fear to go after them so close to you. Bring them to the tower if you can! Raina communicates through Rocky.

ooc: This next round they will be close so act accordingly. Raknesh, feel free to make a balance check in advance in case they are able to slam you off...

Fin: You hit the thing with your attack and it recoils in pain. Jett grazes it with his blade but frustratingly it is not a true blow. Suddenly the thing leaps at you though, attacking with ferocity as it apparently sees you as the most threat. You feel it try to constrict around you again...ooc: Please make an opposed grapple check

Still, he holds on and launches another deadly volley.

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

Stefan/Raknesh: As you attack you both are able to hit your opponents, though by now they have neared you and are ready to retaliate. One goes for Stefan and the other for Raknesh, who fortunately keeps his balance. They slash at you both with their claws even as they slam their wings into you. You feel an almost weakening sensation for just a moment as they make contact but soon the feeling dissipates. Raina is watching out the window still, shouting through Rocky at Raknesh for you to come closer so she can help.  ooc: Please also keep me up to date on your current hit points, thanks!

Fin: Struggle as you might, the thing slides its body around you, constricting and squeezing. You are vaguely aware of Loden fighting his enemy in the background and doing decently. Jett carefully attacks the shell, taking care not to harm you. He hits it squarely twice and it recoils in pain, though it hasn't loosened its hold yet...

Tanzy/Prizzard: Between the three of you (the false necromancer included), Nadred is not looking so good, which you are immensely grateful for. He attacks Tanzy again but due to her sudden blinking ability he misses, though just barely. His second attack hits the bald man who recoils in pain, looking suddenly weaker. Meanwhile, as all of this happens a handsome young man appears as if out of nowhere! With a yell of rage he runs at Nadred and seemingly disappears as if passing through him but not returning out the other side. The creature gives a shudder of pain and more blood starts to drip from his orifices...Tanzy, you recognize the man as your ghost. By now Nadred is on his last legs...

ooc: Another round please! Don't forget your saves.

Struggling a bit to hold on Stefan's claws without said claws bitting into him, Raknesh yells to the druid to go back toward the tower.
Despite the dragon's skills at flying they can't avoid some damage from the two monstrosities.  The short feeling of weakness following those wounds worry him a bit, but he had more pressing matters.

He fires another volley, taking advantage of the close distance to put a bit more power.

Stefan/Raknesh: Raknesh manages to hit with most of his arrows and significantly wounds one angel in particular who looks to be severely weakened. The other is doggedly pursuing you but fortunately Stefan's speed is greater than his. As you fly towards the tower Raina leans out again and blasts the stronger looking of the two. It doesn't kill him but he is more manageable looking now. She instructs you to stay close so she can keep helping. In the meantime you glance below and see that dozens of undead creatures are screeching for you from the ground. You won't be landing there anytime soon...

ooc: Next round please!

Fin: The shell constricts as you struggle but fortunately Jett seems to have found a weak spot and he slashes at it with impressive accuracy. It is enough of a surprise that you are able to scramble out of its grip though it is not quite dead yet...

Tanzy/Prizzard: In spite of Prizzard's difficulties Tanzy is able to do some good. Apparently her ghost friend was quite helpful too for suddenly Nadred turns and starts to scramble through the door he came through, screeching and hissing in pain and fear and bleeding profusely everywhere.

Stefan/Raknesh: Raknesh hits with some of his mind arrows, fortunately the target is so wasted that you manage to do him in and it drops from the sky. The other one has not given up however, and it is coming at you fast. Raina lets out another blast at the thing and it is weakened but not dead yet. Hopefully one more volley will do it because it will be upon you in seconds. ooc: Go ahead and post two rounds if you like Stefan, to make up for the last round ;P

Fin: ooc: Poor little Fin! :P
As you move away from the shell of flesh the necromancer girl looks at you with amusement. A dangerous place for a little one like you. Well, since I am without an assistant you will have to do. Go and hand me that bowl. I'm almost done here she gestures to a silver bowl on a table, looking expectant of your quick obedience.

Tanzy/Prizzard: Tanzy misses Nadred but fortunately Prizzard's attack rings true and the massive thing slumps in a bloody heap, acid and blood spreading across the floor. It is well and truly a mess. Meanwhile you hear pounding from the entrance downstairs. Likely more visitors wanting to find their way in. Should you look out a window you see dozens of various undead milling about the tower, most looking upwards at Stefan and Raknesh, but it would seem the tower still holds allure, putting you in danger still. Should you desire it, you can always try a ranged weapon from the tower, otherwise it would be wise to barricade the front door.

Well aren't you a feisty little thing, she smirks. Fine then, go and help the woman with the door if that's not too abhorrent to your sensibilities. You had a good idea with those rods. she notes.

Tanzy: Your boat barely fits but it seems to be a good block for the moment...

ooc: Flaming crap! lol! Thanks!

Raknesh: You do quite well with the enemies on the ground and fortunately most seem made of weaker stuff than the angels of decay were. Soon Rocky is calling you back.

Everyone: The necromancer patiently waits for Stefan and Raknesh to return, looking extremely pleased with her side of the bargain. Raina looks at the powder dubiously, clearly worried but also resigned to the exchange.

When everyone is gathered together the girl hands the bowl to Raknesh and instructs him to drink and then pass it to Stefan. Poison crosses your mind but she seems to be pleased enough with her side of things you doubt she would need to kill you now, especially since you are all so wounded from events that she could likely kill you anyway if she wished. Should you drink it you find it tastes awful and it's all you can do not to gag on the stuff. She turns to Tanzy. I could get rid of your ghost friend if you like, though for the moment he seems to come in handy. she offers. She frowns then as if a thought has just struck her. When you entered did you by any chance come across a ranting old man? Oh dear I wonder how he fared through this. He never was as strong as the others. she mutters.

Couldn't help but experiment with him though the old fool. He actually thinks he's alive! she laughs again. Oh but you probably don't see the humor in it you are all so very dull she rolls her eyes. Raina looks shocked at this revelation. What have you done? How? The girl grins widely at this. Oh I'm sure you would love to know wouldn't you Raina? But I've helped you enough. If your father knew what I just did for you he'd have my head. Off with you now, the lot downstairs should have calmed down by now. Indeed the pounding has stopped.

Agreed. Raina gives a somber nod. You head down, I'll be just a minute more. As you leave she stays behind and has quiet and intense words with the young necromancer who is listening with an expression of interest. Once outside you see the area has thankfully cleared of the undead though the old man from before is once again outside and looking concerned. Get out of here you fools! Don't you know where you are? There's a necromancer in this tower! he points frantically. He clearly has no idea that he is dead, doomed to forever live in this repetitive existence of warning passerby against the same fate that took his granddaughter.

Prizzard: You can't make out everything but it sounds like Raina is threatening the necromancer who looks amused though you can make out a spark of intimidation on her part too. At your question Raina blinks and then gestures to her belt pouch. Blood should suffice for our needs I believe. I obtained some during the fight, for a price of course. she adds with a growl. ooc: Feel free to finish any questions/convo with her Prizzard while I move things along a bit.

The next four days pass quickly. You are all able to heal and Stefan and Raknesh are finally able to rest comfortably without fear of death's assassins though Raina informs you that you should still keep your guard up. Fin's nightmares increase but Raina helps him meditate every night saying you must get your mind calmed before she can risk cleansing you. Apparently one must be in a certain state and if you can't maintain a sense of control then the cleansing will backfire...

Tanzy, Raina informs you that your ghost is a very helpful asset and you should be grateful for such a companion, though how long he will stay she is uncertain saying it could be forever or he could move on to another plane at any time.

At the end of the fourth day you are only a half a day's ride from the temple but you are tired and need to rest. As you come upon a city you see smoke billowing in the distance and a black cloud hanging over the place which looks very unnatural...

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

Everything is plunged into chaos as a few more of the goddess's warriors join the fray. Bryon, you find you are badly shaken by your wound and you recognize such feelings are the result of something dark in that dagger. Fortunately you are able to still function for the time being and your attack is quite effective, even finishing one of the more wounded soldiers off. Your husband keeps up his attacks as well, doing a decent job of avoiding attacks.

Raknesh and Tanzy both attack, the first with a volley of psy arrows and Tanzy with a dizzying display of her swords. Already some of the warriors are being weakened but the entire city is overrun so it is a small relief. Jett sticks close to Fin, somewhat protective of the halfling, especially since the attentions of a warrior has been drawn...In the meantime the warriors have begun returning your attacks, though fortunately you are able to evade most of them. Tanzy, however, takes a blade to the thigh and Raknesh is grazed by a dagger. You feel the familiar taint of the dark goddess trying to seep into your veins again.

Stefan: As you fly after Raina you easily overtake her and she looks up in surprise. Instead of being aware of your irritation she looks absolutely delighted. Oh! Do you think you could fly me up there?! she asks, pointing to the black cloud. It would save me a lot of trouble. Loden, who ran with her is looking at you warily though. He is more attuned with your mood apparently.

ooc: Ok next round everyone! Go ahead and just post as you are able and I will sort out the initiative when I post for you, that way I know who is and isn't available. Thanks!

Stefan trumpeted a challenge to the warriors as he swooped down to gather up Raina and Loden if he wants to be flown as well.  Shifting his angle slightly he rises above melee range as he growls back to the woman.  "I owe you too much to let you kill yourself stupidly, try and rmember that."

standard action, pick up Raina/Loden

As I haven't been at a computer I'll just post my intentions:

First using two Belt of Battle charges to gain a standard action to cast Dragon Breath: Acid Cone before charging a target that will allow my Dreadful Wrath to effect a decent number of opponents between us and the fighting couple. The spell Storm Touch is already cast on the scythe within the Glove of Storing, holding it in status until the charge, at which point it'll be drawn as a free action.

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

Stefan: You hear an offended squawk from Raina and she gives you a light smack on the back in mock irritation. How rude! I'll have you know I would only kill myself in an intelligent manner thank you very much! she sniffs though there is amusement in her voice. Still, I'm not important. Don't go trying too hard to save me and throw your own life away in the process. I've lived for a very long time and you haven't. You have a lot of catching up to do. she pats you fondly this time. Now, be careful but see how close you can get without risking yourself. Loden meanwhile (who has taken your offer to join) looses arrows on the falling forms whenever they get too close. The cloud itself is black and broiling with thunder as the forms fall like rain. At the rate it's going the whole city will be overrun within the hour. As you get closer a bolt of red lightning suddenly comes straight for you... ooc; Reflex save please! And any intentions/attacks etc.

Everyone else: The fray is frantic, chaotic and bloody. Raknesh manages to do an impressive amount of damage with his mind arrows but during this time the feeling of ice seems to enter your veins and you find it hard to react or move as quickly.

Fin's sword gets thrown twice at the warrior attacking and hits both times. Jett is eager to protect his friend and stays close by, also attacking. The pale warrior keeps coming though and he lunges at Jett, slicing him through the side. Fortunately it is not a killing wound and the man slips on his own blood during his second attempt. Meanwhile Fin, you start to feel strangely. Your heart is racing wildly and your head is buzzing so much you feel it is going to crack open. Was that a whisper you heard just now? Looking around there is nothing that would have made such a noise...

Bryon: In spite of your fear you are able to finish off your enemy though more are closing in. Your husband looks at you worriedly. Are you alright?! he demands as he continues to fight. Fortunately you have a moment to try to regather yourself before the next round is on you, though it will only be seconds...

Prizzard as usual is a powerhouse of chaos though he is not without harm for a few blades of the enemy slice here and there...

ooc: I'm in a rush so I apologize now if I miss anyone or any particular detail I should have! I am literally about out the door so I didn't get to proof read this but I figure a rough post is better than making you wait again. Next round folks!

Stefan: You do indeed get hit with the full brunt of the red lightning and Raina cries out in concern for you, asking if you are alright. Fortunately though it hurts you are still functional and what's more you didn't drop your passengers. Raina hurls a purple fireball at the cloud in retaliation and to your surprise it begins to rain a red substance that looks alarmingly akin to blood. The lightning crackles again...By now you are close enough to try to attack the cloud but you had best be ready to dodge...ooc; attack if desired plus another reflex save

Tanzy: Some of your blows hit and some miss but you are slowly whittling away at them. In the meantime your ghost appears out of nowhere, intent upon helping you. You are able to shake off the poison but by now another enemy has neared enough to slice at you and grazes your shoulder with his blade.

Raknesh: Most of your attacks hit and by now a couple of them lie dead and the others are not looking well. Still, they are a determined bunch and there are so many of them you don't know how long this is going to work out...

Bryon: Your rest is to be short lived for more white skinned enemies are near and they are starting to shoot black tipped arrows at you...During all this you notice a young boy of about 8 with these newcomers. He looks wide eyed and stressed but surprisingly calm otherwise. At seeing the halfling in distress he rushes to him, quite unlike any child you've seen to plunge into danger so. An arrow nicks your thigh.

Fin: Jett looks at you with concern and Halek rushes to your side. To your surprise, the enemies nearest you have stopped fighting you and instead seem to watch you expectantly, albeit uncertainly. Fin! You've got to fight him! He's trying to take over! This is your chance Fin, you see how they're watching you? They sense him inside you! You could try to control them! He sounds both eager and desperate.

Meanwhile Prizzard is wreaking havoc all around. He decimates his first foe and his presence seems to shake nearby enemies to the point they hesitate before approaching. His acid spray hisses and sizzles as it meets with flesh and it is enough to drive many warriors back. Fearing this dark man they decide a new tactic is in order and ready their bows...

Everyone: During all this you will notice that Fin is freaking out, Halek is trying to help him, Stefan is being attacked in the sky by red lightning and the cloud is now raining blood. You know, just a normal day right?

Raknesh noticed the strange situation around Fin, and more importantly in his perspective, the fact Halek was very close to some of those strange soldiers.

Halek shakes his head at Fin's attempts. You've got to try harder! If you can keep him from taking you, you should be able to call them off! As he speaks you can feel your grip on your body growing weaker... ooc: Maybe try that again ;P

Meanwhile the fray is going strong. Prizzard is making quite the dent in enemies already and the foe he attacks nearly buckles in shock at the hit he takes. The archers try to hit this blurred man but they miss. However, Jett takes quite the blow, an arrow striking his chest though fortunately not a mortal wound yet. Tanzy and Raknesh are both doing well, though one of Raknesh's arrows miss as does one of her attacks.. In the meantime a warrior slashes at Raknesh as he nears Halek and Fin, striking him across the thigh. Tanzy takes a nick to the shoulder blade and Bryon, your husband takes an arrow to the side. During this you find you are growing dizzy...

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

Stefan, you are being hit horribly by the lightning and Raina grips you in alarm both out of concern for you and in an attempt to keep from falling. Loden unleashes arrows at the red cloud but they don't do much good. Fortunately Raina has stronger stuff available and she hurls an enormous ball of white light at the thing which finally causes it to dissipate. You need to land my friend she informs you firmly. As she talks all the forms that were falling from the sky start to disintegrate into disturbing chunks of bloody flesh and bone, landing in disgusting heaps on the streets, harmless now where they would have been soldiers seconds before. There are still enough black clad warriors on the ground though that the city still has its hands full.

Meanwhile everyone else does quite well in the fray. Raknesh's arrows take out his foes as he makes his way to Halek who looks pleased to see him, still looking at Fin worriedly. Fin, you are losing your battle to the darkness inside and the world starts to spin as you grow dizzy. You are starting to black out but to your shock the boy Halek rushes at you and begins to slap you hard, across the face. It feels unnaturally painful and you are stunned that he should have such strength. Raknesh, you are nearly as surprised by this. I won't let you release him Fin. he growls.

Tanzy is a whirlwind of motion though she misses from time to time. Unfortunately you also take a nasty hit in the side but you are still up and your ghost defends you vigorously.

Prizzard is by now quite close to the couple and has wreaked a proper amount of destruction along the way, avoiding enemy blades in doing so.
Bryon, though a bit worse for the wear, hits her targets with ease though her spouse takes a wound to the collarbone during this time.

Everyone: During all this everyone notices the warriors are starting to gather around Fin and Halek. The boy is striking the halfling determinedly as the thief quivers and shakes. Something is happening and if the enemies are this interested it cannot be good. Meanwhile you see the dragon above has been successful in eliminating the cloud and all the foes that have been raining down on the streets suddenly become naught but flesh and bone, falling to the ground in disgusting heaps. The whole city is a bloody mess and though you are grateful not to have new numbers added to the fray there are still enough residual battles going on to keep your hands full.

ooc: Sorry if I missed anything folks. Still trying to get back into things! Next round.

Stefan: Raina gives you a pat and tells you to take your time. Now that the cloud is gone we need to focus on the enemies on the ground. Find the biggest clusters of them and take them out. she instructs. As you look around you see there are plenty to choose from. There are still hundreds of enemies in the city even with the cloud destroyed. ooc: Go ahead and make a ranged attack if you wish, or whatever method you desire of course.

Everyone else: Prizzard attempts to call forth his strange power and you all watch in shock as a bright blue light seems to emanate from inside the man, bursting out of his eyes and skin until it is almost blinding to look at. Prizzard!!! Halek gasps in horror. You have drawn too much, you know that now. You feel something warm running out of your ears, eyes, mouth, nose, even the beds of your fingernails. Blood. Everything goes black. To onlookers it is a very horrific scene and you all watch in shock as your friend falls to the ground, limp. You don't know if he's dead yet but he certainly looks it.

Halek turns to Fin frantically. Command them to stop! Hurry! he cries, scrambling towards the fallen Prizzard. Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

The blood pouring from his body turned onto electricity upon contacting the air, as usual. But with far more blood having also need charged by the hungry blue energy, his body erupted into a storm before he fell to the ground. His body could be heard sizzling for a moment until the bleeding slowed to a stop. Everywhere that had bled was left with a lite caking of yellowed blood and electrical burns.

Shortly after, his pseudodragon lands on his body, tail raised like a scorpions and electrified fangs bared in a hiss at any nearby enemies. It would seem the sorcerer lives, for now.

Pseudodragon has a sting attack readied for the first enemy that approaches, if any.

Mustering all his courage, Fin yells at the enemies pressing in around them. "STOP THIS AT ONCE, I command you... Drop your weapons and stop this senseless fighting." He then takes a moment to see if his words had any effect.

"Bloody hell" Tanzy gasped seeing Prizzards disturbing lightning show. It was obvious that something had gone wrong as the man fell to the ground. "That's not good," She muttered. With an easy backflip she tumbled away from the enemy and moved towards Prizzard hoping to take attention away from Halek.

While the battle seemed to slowly go in their favor, Raknesh witnessed two events that could change things again:
firstly Prizzard apparently misused his power and fell on the ground. One of their heaviest hitter down with so many enemies still ready to fight was a dire setback.

He quickly send Rocky to fly and check on the man.

Himself closed the distance between him and his protégé, but not fast enough to prevent the boy from getting wounded.  But the boy proved capable of handling things, once more.

"Jett! Try go get back to us" he told the wounded man, firing arrows at the enemies surrounding him.

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

Prizzard's pseudodragon does get the opportunity to attack one of the warriors who falls down limply at being stung. Tanzy gets away from her enemies with ease and Ulthol obeys his wife's commands to offer aid, rushing to help where he can. Jett, still struggling, heeds Raknesh's call and stumbles towards the rest of you, half dead. Raknesh's arrows pierce his targets and kill one of them.

During all this the pale skinned warriors suddenly seem to obey the halfling's command to stop and they drop their swords and stiffen, awaiting further instruction. Halek gives a whoop of triumph and a grin splits his face. Well done Fin! Well done! Now, quickly before it's too late, tell them to kill themselves!

ooc: Roll spot please everyone

Stefan: Raina directs you to a one story rooftop and slides off you, Loden doing the same. You notice to your surprise that all of the warriors in sight (which are many) have suddenly stopped fighting and are holding perfectly still, letting their weapons drop to the ground. What the devil is going on? Raina murmurs. The townspeople are taking advantage of this opportunity to run for their lives while they can. It appears the death toll has been quite high.

Fin looked completely astonished that they actually obeyed his commands. When Halek tells him what to say next, he didn't hesitate and orders them to take their own lives. It's only after he's given the command that a look of horror crosses his face, for Fin has realized what he has just done. Evil or not, he has condemned these warriors to death, an act he will now have to live with for the rest of his life. He says in an almost inaudible whisper "I'm sorry".

A chill tingled down Tanzy's spine as the worriers obeyed Finn's order. Whatever was inside the little man was more powerful then she'd imagined.

Turning to their fallen companion she approached cautiously so as not to disturb the dragon guarding him. "I have a couple healing potions," Tanzy offered. "They might help a little but he'll definitely need the professional attention of a healer..." she looked at the newcomers hopefully. If Prizzards little dragon allows it she will give him the potion.

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

ooc: Hee hee! The dragon is so cute! I want one :)

The warriors take their blades up and immediately plunge their blades into their hearts in unison, hundreds of pale soldiers falling to the ground in pools of blood. It is horrific and yet necessary.

Stefan, Rocky finds you and informs you from Raknesh that they are in need of your healing, you can see from where you are they are not far and Prizzard's dark form is lying motionless.

Tanzy's potion at first does nothing but Halek grips the man's legs and closes his eyes in concentration. I will try to amplify it he mutters. A moment later his eyes flutter open but he is still limp and unmoving.

Prizzard, you waken to find your psuedodragon and your companions gathered round. You feel so incredibly weak that you cannot move a single muscle, not even your fingers or toes. The most you can do is slowly turn your head, even breathing is difficult. You feel your magic drained from you completely. You are about as helpless as they come but at least you are alive. Don't get too excited yet Halek warns. You may die yet, though I hope to avoid that.

Suddenly he is interrupted by the sight of a female figure stumbling towards you from the piles of bodies. Everyone sees this though some see it sooner. As she approaches most of you recognize Ezran to your shock! For Fin and Bryon she is a dark skinned beautiful woman. Fin, you remember her from the previous town, the woman who was possessed. Jett especially gasps for those who know them knew he was her lover. J-Jett, I'm s-sorry... she pants. Then you realize why she is stumbling. A black dagger sticks out of her chest up to the hilt. Jett rushes to her, yelling in panic but it is too late. She collapses before he can get to her and falls dead to the ground. Her blade and wounds perfectly match the pale warriors and Fin, you realize to your horror that she too has killed herself at your orders. This poor innocent woman who had been taken captive by the enemy.

The dragon looks at the rock as it approaches then whizzes away before turning to Raina.  "They need me, Do I need to return after I use up what healing magic I have left?"  He will pause long enough to hear her reply and nodded as he once more takes to the sky, flying quickly to the group and backwinging before settling beside them. "What happened, who is..." He begins before seeing Prizzard on the ground, which causes his slitted eyes to narrow.  "What did he do to end up this way."

The tiny dragon addresses everyone through telepathy, first looking to Stefan, then the newcomers, and finally addressing everyone else on his masters condition. "On his part, magic-induced hubris. As for the rest of this.. likely more hubris either way you look at it. We ate on the bad side of a necromancer who calls herself a goddess and at even be one. And after that we defiled one of her temples, many followers, and angered a few of her associates.. As for his condition: movement seems out of the question, even breathing is difficult, and he cannot feel any magic in his body. Healing magic may be useless without Haleks assistance. In fact.." It quickly crawls into his robe and soon drags out a small rod. "This should help his body recover slightly faster." It is a Rod of Bodily Restoration.

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

Stefan: Raina gives you the go ahead and says she'll meet you soon.

Everyone: Halek gives the poor halfling a hug and looks very sad yet very determined. I will fix you Fin. Soon. I'm so sorry you had to do that but it was the only way. The entire city would have been wiped out and they wouldn't stop there. You saved us all and as tragic as Ezran's loss is, you had no way of knowing she was here.

The boy then turns to Raknesh. Don't blame yourself Raknesh. Going into that house could have been suicide. It is not your fault either. During this Jett still grips her limp body, crying softly over her form. At mention of resurrection Halek shakes his head. We could try I suppose but I doubt it will do any good. Her body has been tainted for so long with darkness that there's no telling what we would bring back. It would be risky and if we did bring back the evil it would be very powerful. It could be suicide to even try. By now Raina and Loden have arrived upon the scene and Raina puts a sympathetic hand on Jett's shoulder. They arrive just in time for Bryon's introduction and the beautiful blonde woman nods in greeting. Raina, pleased to meet you as well. You are impressive to survive the battle as you did. I hate to do this but we could use your help. As you can see we are embroiled in a bitter battle and our failure will mean the world's end. I don't feel too guilty pressing you into helping under the circumstances. We are caught in a battle between two ancient goddesses. There was a dark goddess named Shaelis and a light goddess named Mirian, sisters. They each had followers in ancient times until the other gods were born and they eventually fell into obscurity. Without worship, they sank into a slumber until they would one day be reawakened to remind the world of their power and glory, one of good and one of evil. Well Shae has already awakened due to an act of ignorance... Halek stands then and glances at Raina. It was me. I woke her on accident by my presence. You see I am her son. he sighs tiredly. This will come as a surprise to some of his own party as well. Our quest is to waken Mirian so that she may battle her counterpart. This requires we visit several temples to obtain the means to awaken her.

"I'm not good with magic tools..."

He then listened to Halek's tale and, indeed, felt a bit suprised.
Not only because of Hale's lineage, but also because he thought it was their intervention at the buried place that had caused to Goddess to stir.

"Don't worry, you are not the only one to blame. And we will do all we can to return things to normal."

He nodded to the couple "You are welcome to join us, but what happens next is a best dangerous, probably worse."

Re: Chapter 5:  Death and Other Things

Raina takes the rod and uses it on Prizzard. Unfortunately you still can't move but you can at least talk a bit. You really did yourself in this time and Raina says as much in a chiding voice.

Halek looks at Raknesh with a sense of relief. Perhaps he feared judgment about his true identity.

In response to his wife's request Althol grins. Of course my dear he laughs. But then you always had voice enough for the both of us when you wanted he gives a teasing grin. I will do all I can to help in all seriousness though. If those things are to be unleashed on the world how could we stand by and do nothing? Raina looks pleased at this and soon introductions are made. The town itself is half in ruins. It looks like after all the chaos it will not be the ideal place to stay. Loden (a dangerous looking dark haired man) informs you all that there looks to be a small village a few hours off. Halek proposes you head there and await Prizzard's recovery before heading to the next temple. We might as well try to cleanse Fin while we're at it. If he hadn't been able to shake off his possessor things would have gone very differently. We can't afford to wait any longer, no matter how dangerous it is. I am sorry Fin. he looks sad. At this Jett picks up Ezran's bloody corpse, his face haunted and grieved. I'm taking her with us. We need to bury her, and not in this hellish place.

ooc: I'm going to start another chapter soon so finish up here, take your time if you like. Let me know the plans for the next week while they get things in order for Fin's cleansing and Prizzard heals.

"Spend a week or two with us and you'll see why we are so serious," Tanzy replied to the new woman tilting her head towards Jett and his fallen love as well as the other casualties in the village. "Your company is most welcome," she added with a friendly smile "but in fair warning events like these are very common when you travel with this group." She wished someone had warned her when she'd first met them in a similar battle.

The information about Halek's background was a surprise but at the same time made sense. Tanzy had no less faith in him then she'd had before they knew who his mother was.

Loden's suggestion of recovering in the next village was a welcome idea. "I can go find us a wagon" she suggested looking doubtfully at Prizzard who had yet to speak or move. "I don't think riding on a horse is an option..."
