"This should make me happy," Tanzy spoke in the softest whisper. "But I get the feeling whatever did this isn't on our side..." Frowning she scanned the island and surrounding waters looking for the cause of the sirens demise.

Prizzard releases Sonn to also scout as a grumpy look falls on his face. He was pretty cheerful a moment ago, with being able to walk and use magic so soon after on of his 'episodes'. "Considering we had to flee from fewer when they weren't even fighting us seriously.."

rolled 14,12,13,17 using d20+3,d20+3,d20+9,d20+9.  Spot and Listen, Sonn Spot and Listen.

Re: Chapter 6: The Second Temple

Only Tanzy and Raknesh are able to spot something beneath the water. It is a creature, some fifty feet long or so and very serpentine like though it's hard to get details with it submerged as it is. The pitch black scales blend in with the dark water, especially with the waning light. You're curious that you didn't run across it before considering the lake is not particularly large. This leads you to believe it is not naturally found here...

As Tanzy and Raknesh squint at the mostly submerged form, Halek gives a gulp of fear. H-How are we going to get to shore?

Meanwhile Raina glowers at the water, a look of tired wariness on her face. Ah. This is one of my father's pets I believe. Heaven forbid we have a moment of rest... She turns to the rest of you. I don't suppose anyone has a way to transport us to shore eh? We still have Tanzy's boat I suppose but I doubt it would survive. Be warned, if it's what I think it is we may not be safe on land either, but it will have fewer advantages she rubs her temple as though she has a headache.

"We could try to escape by the air."Suggested Raknesh.

Not really interested in fighting something so large and able to kill that many dangerous creatures.

"Stephan, can you transform into something that could carry many of us? Or maybe summon something?"

Bryon nodded, "Everyone hold hands." When they do she will use Dimension Door to take the group to the shore.

"What else can you tell us about it, so we can act swiftly if it proves to be that pet?" a bit of wildness had returned to Prizzard and somehow his magic was working already. He seemed more ready to skulk than fight though.

Re: Chapter 6: The Second Temple

Stephan replies that he could transport one or two of you by dragon form but that anything he could summon would likewise be limited to how many it could carry at one time. Fortunately your horses are still not far on the shore and from what you can tell they remain unscathed.

In answer to Prizzard's question Raina sighs. Well it likes to tunnel. That's probably how it came up into the lake in the first place, tunneling up from the underworld. It's very fast in water but slower on land though it can pop out when you least expect it. I would think the horses can outrun it but it's very tenacious. If we rest too long it will catch up. We can either try to kill it or outsmart it. The only way it will lose our trail is if find a road or ride through mountains. It can't smell through stone. The nearest one is a half day's ride though I'd wager. We can give it a go if you want but you can't slow down at all unless I tell you. she warns.

ooc: I'm totally going to have Bryon transport you but since everything happens with the thing the moment you make your move I thought I'd wait until all questions were answered first :)

ooc: Looking at his sheet, he's a medium so we'll have to figure out how many he can carry at once though the bag of holding helps. I'm still looking into flying load. It's surprisingly hard to find stuff on it right away and I'm a bit crunched for time. I'll do some more research and get back to you. Sigh, this is why I hate NPC'ing other people's characters.

Re: Chapter 6: The Second Temple

ooc: Ok, it has been decided that for simplicity's sake we'll just do the Bryon transport to the horses thing. If people want to split up let me know and I'll edit the following but I figure we should just pick a direction and go with it so we can move the story along.

Stefan decides he will try to distract the creature while the rest of you are transported to the horses, which thankfully seem intact as they were far enough away from danger to be left alone. Raina instructs you to move fast and not waste time and hopefully Stefan can give you a decent head start before joining you.
Stay away from water if you see any. It can make up for lost time if it hits a river or lake, it's absurdly fast. Remember, head for the mountains she warns, pointing north.

Soon the plan is in motion and Bryon transports you to the horses, which are fortunately still saddled, poor things. You had not intended to stay in the temple as long as you did. The creature immediately springs into action, rising its black wet head high out of the water. It looks like a cross between a snake and a worm but has a gaping circular mouth with rows of sharp teeth. As it rears, Stefan makes his move, spewing ice at it and swerving in close. You have your chance, time to take it...

ooc: Ok, so this is going to be something of a lengthy pursuit so please roll a ride check and let me know your plans. Here's the DC list as well as some of your options. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/ride.htm

My biggest reason for having you roll this is to see how well you can keep on and how long your mount will last without tiring. I'm sure there are nitty gritty ways to determine this but for time's sake I'm keeping things simple and just doing a general ride check instead. If you decide to use a ranged attack on it you may as long as you succeed at your check.

Raknesh had felt a bit of worry as they talked about an intense escape riding.

He could, of course, ride correctly while traveling, but had no formation on riding in any stressful situation.  And there current predicament was - sadly - well beyond stressful.

Prizzard nearly falls off just mounting, not having a secind hand to catch himself with. The reminder of the missing arm sours his oddly chipper mood somewhat and he finds his usual level of seriousness. "I'll take rear guard."

Re: Chapter 6: The Second Temple

ooc: wow.....that's a whole load of crappy ride checks! (save Tanzy of course) Good thing the DC's to stay on aren't too bad but it will cost you in speed.

Prizzard, Raknesh, and Bryon all struggle to get their horses to do what they want. You are able to hang on all right, even guiding it with your knees for a bit should you wish to launch a ranged attack, but the horses are spooked and expending their energy too quickly. You can tell that they are going to tire long before you reach safety. Tanzy, Raina and Loden, however, seem to have a better handle on things. Ahead of you stretch the mountains Raina spoke of but it's obvious only half of you will make it there the way things are going.

Meanwhile the creature has caught on to your escape attempt and tries to ignore Stefan's attacks with varying success, snapping at the dragon and spewing a dark blue venom which to your dismay, eats through a portion of his wings. Then he turns his attention to you...

ooc: Ok he'll be on you within three rounds. If you have any ranged attacks you can utilize you can do so since the dc is only 5 for that, lucky eh? You should also be able to attack in more traditional ways via mount when he gets closer but naturally it won't be easy. Go ahead and roll 3 rounds worth if you decide to do the ranged attacks.

Tanzy holds her horse back enough to remain close to the others should they need help. She doesn't really  have any ranged weapons to attack with and is feeling rather useless, but she also isn't  willing to abandon her slower companions.

Raknesh was not used to ride on a running horse, let alone to fight on a running horse.

His aim was greatly influenced by that fact, lacking his usual precision.

OOC attack include the -8 from being on a running horse.

Re: Chapter 6: The Second Temple

ooc: Most of you rolled the same ride roll or barely above, it was pretty impressive actually, so whatever order you think best to be in is fine with me. There is plenty of room for you to spread out to avoid hitting each other too so I'm not worried about it.

Stefan is still frantically trying to keep the creature from you and Raina likewise blasts at the thing with varying success. Between all of your attacks (some more accurate than others) you can tell you are indeed hurting it, but it is by no means finished with you. As you continue to urge your horses forward it suddenly rears up to its full height, some forty feet or so, then slams its body down on the ground with tremendous force. Consequently the ground around you opens up into a wide, deep fissure, threatening to swallow you and your horses up!

ooc: Ok, roll a reflex and a ride save. Reflex DC 17 or you fall in the fissure. Ride check DC 15 or your horse falls in. If you succeed the reflex but not the ride you can leap off your horse and the poor dear is going down. Fail your reflex but succeed on your ride your horse is safe but you're in the hole. And of course if you succeed in both you are both good to go. Hopefully you have better luck than you've been having...Also, you all take 17 bludgeoning damage from the earthquake and if you fall in it's an additional 26 damage from the fall. Everyone's hit points should currently be back up by the way, in case there's any confusion about that. If you don't fall in the hole feel free to roll an attack or what have you in response.

He noticed Prizzard's troublesome situation and stopped his horse as
he fired another volley, trying to attract the monster's attention.
