Overall though I think the fight went quite smoothly. Imagine how bad it would be if I hadn't given you guys 300 xp to start out with. There is a reason that some people call this system "Warhammer Fail at all your rolls play."

The zoo trip today (as reference in the documents thread) was a great success. I was worried that at 17 months my daughter might still be too young but she seemed to really enjoy it.

Unfortunately we came home to find that the dog had gotten into her Easter basket and eaten at least a half pound of chocolate (quite a lot for a 16 pound dog!) One trip to the emergency vet later and I'm out 400 bucks and was an hour and a half late for work!

Yeah? Maybe I can collect some and use it to pay to get my house bat-proofed. This is the second time this has happened. Two years ago my pregnant wife wakes me up and says, "There's a bird in our bedroom," well it wasn't a bird. Rabies shots were no fun at all and my daughter has yet to exhibit any signs of batlike superpowers or vampiric immortality. What a gyp!

This first adventure is pretty railroady so it's easy to progress fast. The real test will be the later adventures that are much more sandboxey and require a lot of investigation. I'm told that a lack of a clear path can be the death of play by post games.

I had a friend who played a ventrue...went with a rich, social guy...nothing in combat, but hired bodyguards, and what not. Taught me some valuable lessons. it was one of my first games. Now I know that my powerful NPCs have connections with city officals. He paid ALOT of money to have the main bad guys, Haven to be torn down at noon one day...the guy was asleep inside....didn't end well.

It's a great game. I like the way they portray the vampires, like in Anne Rice's books. I've played a... the old daeva... what was the name. The other social vampires. He was a painter, had a couple of ghouls who ran his gallery at day and he joined the parties at night.

From the Old World of Darkness series I like the werewolves the most and the Get of Fenris in particular. Maybe it was the nordic mythology feel or something, but liked them.

Dwarfs that die in a dwarf city are put in the clan burial vault after the prayers of Gazul are said.

Dwarfs that die outside a city are buried where they lie...it happens far to often to return the bodies. But Prayers of Gazul are still said.

Took a lot of work but finally got the mod working. It's pretty darned impressive from a visual standpoint. The frustrating points are that a lot of the text is in Russian and they seem to have boosted the morale too much on too many of the units. It feels like everyone fights to the death.

Re: OOC Off topic
Yeah, I've got the translation downloaded but it's still half in Russian. Luckily version 1.04 should be out soon.

Things I like:
All of the principalities of the Empire are their own faction. Instead of having one "Empire" faction I can play as Wissenland, or Ostland, or (in my case) Reikland.
All units made special for the mod. And they look damned beautiful.
Beastmen armies sprouting up in the forest and creating herdstone altars (forts).
Dwarves have a different win requirement. They're not looking to take over the world, instead they just need to reclaim the dwarf lands that are under orc and goblin control then hold them for x turns.
Lots of special generals with special skins.

Things I don't like
There doesn't appear to be anything rotten going on in my Bogenhafen. Some damned adventurers must have cleaned it out.
It crashes pretty regularly.
The sieges take forever due to large unit size, ridiculous armor values, and nearly unbreakable troops. I was sieging a chaos city and they just parked two units of Chosen Chaos Knights in the road and it took 2/3 of the battle timer just to kill them.
Currently all of the buildings and their descriptions are in Russian. Unfortunately they've all been given new art (which is cool) but it's real difficult to figure out what I'm constructing.
No Brettonia. C'mon just combine the current English and French armies and you're just about done.
My orcs think they're muslim.

I saw it. I'm more of an Icehockey fan than football/soccer. Good game, but I was dissapointed with the referees. They made many mistakes during the whole cup.

They should use atleast a goal camera for those unclear goals. It might be wishfull thinking that they'd use cameras to weed out the players who play dead all the time and give them a card for each attempt.

Re: OOC Off topic
The referees for all the Dutch games were poor. Half the team seemed more interested in kicking players than kicking the ball. Did you see De Jong's sidekick to Alonso's chest? You wouldn't see that in a UFC match. Robben was the only Dutch player who looked like he wanted to play the game.

Don't think the video ref will ever come into football. It's part of FIFA's ideology that the kids and the amateurs play by the same rules as the top professionals. If they bring cameras into the World Cup, they'll have to do the same in every schoolboy and Sunday League game.

I liked the experimental rules used in the EUROPA League last season, with an umpire behind each goal. That could cut down on a lot of diving and disallowed goals.

That would work. There have been too many missed goals in the world cup.

They have to do something to try to weed out those faking injuries from merely brushing the other player. It was really makes me mad and a reason I don't follow football(soccer) as much. Otherwise I enjoy a good game of football, sadly those are rare and I was hoping to see a few in the World Cup.

I watched it and most of the games this WC and enjoyed myself....except for the ref'ing.  As it was only my second WC I am still not an expert but am getting the hang of things.  Watched the game with a ref friend who shook his head most of the time....especially about the corner that should have been.

Here's a great webcomic I just discovered.
http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=612

It's called DM of the rings. It's about what might happen if The Lord of the Rings trilogy was a D&D campaign.

Y'know what? I'm looking at the rules and it says you have to continue making tests until the terror causing creature or event is out of sight. I guess the rolls this time will be just to see how far you run (not that it really matters a whole lot). You'll be capped at one insanity point since the daemon didn't chase you and instead dispersed to chase after Teugen.

Alright, I sent an rmail to Lothar's character. Svlad, you're RL friends with Imrak's player, right? Any idea if he'll be rejoining us?

Has anybody watched the Pillars of the Earth mini-series? I was watching it and there's a part where one of the characters, Jack, is throwing sling stones at brigands in the forest and it reminded me very much of how I envisioned Otto's character.

Btw, I'm jealous that your baby sleeps through the night Otto. My 8 month old still wants to wake up every night for a bottle and I'm not having much luck breaking her of the habit.

I've been looking over the threads and I'm thinking we won't need to reset since we're actually at a pretty good point for dropping characters. You guys are about to come into a bunch of money when that wool gets sold so that would be a good reason for somebody to decide that some comfortable living sounds better than sailing around on a stinky river boat.

I'll probably have us back moving after Thanksgiving weekend.

Thanks for the heads up Svlad.

Strangely the module has the dwarf call the two dwarfs wetbacks instead of deserters. I'm guessing wetback meant something else to the brits who wrote this back in the early 80s. Either that or there is some anti-hispanic racism in the Warhammer world that I've never encountered before.

Happy trails Otto and no hard feelings. I know it was asking a lot to pop back into this game after a year of nothing.

Ulrich, I rolled this for your attempts to haggle a better wage 21:21, Today: GM, on behalf of Ulrich Von Wolfenstein, rolled 82 using 1d100 with rolls of 82. Persuasion +20. I'm giving you a +20 for good roleplay but as it stands it's a fail. Want to fortune point it or let it stand?

Some real good roleplay all around this scene. I particularly enjoyed the bit about Grimgin being a problem fixer not a builder and Ulrich's "Brotherhood of Bogenhafen" bit.

Also, can you PM me what your current xp total is? I want to compare to my notes and make sure we're all on the same page.

I'm half tempted to try and resurrect it again. The problem is I lost the pdf when my last desktop computer died. Also, I suspect you're the only two players who are still active users. Might be better to try and start a new game, I have such fondness for the feel of the setting. I got lured back by a friend who wanted to try D&D 5th edition but it doesn't quite hit the right notes for me. I hate the way armor and hit points work and the abundance of magic.

I've got all of the WFRP stuff I need now, but yeesh, I forgot how complicated this campaign gets. Lots of traveling to different locations to track down clues.

Now I know it's been a long time, but how did you guys feel that the Shadows Over Bogenhafen adventure went? The first adventure went great but was pretty straight forward, but what were your thoughts on Shadows? Too complex for play by post? Did the plot get lost?

I re-read a bunch of the old threads and it reignited my interest in this game. I'll gladly get it moving again. As I recall we're at a point where I need to know what you guys are doing next. The characters just contracted with some dwarf engineers to help them get the signal tower built by figuring out why their workers keep disappearing.

I'll try to get a post up that summarizes what has happened so far and the important clues that have already been uncovered. Kind of like the quest log in a computer RPG.

Anyway, since this is going to restart I rtj'ed again and voilà here I am again.

Re: OOC Off topic
No problem. The party was sailing the River Reik in their nice new boat, The Incognito, after leaving Altdorf not long ago. A pair of riders have been shadowing the boat from the shore for several days now, since a pair of peddlers in Weissbruck accosted Connor, gave him some sort of weird signal, then rubbed purple ink onto his hand before disappearing into the crowd.

The Incognito came across a construction site where some sort of tower was being built (a semaphore machine for sending messages over distance). A pair of the dwarf craftsmen hailed to you from the site's dock, begging for a ride. The foreman, Dorin Isembeard, shamed the dwarves into remaining. The Incognito docked and the party's dwarfs, Imrak and Grimgrin, went to speak with the workers and the foreman. They learned that there have been problems at the site, a series of accidents and disappearances, that have cut the dwarf numbers in half and put them behind schedule. The workers are unhappy and on the verge of striking. The foreman feels that it's just a case of workers being lazy or deserting but the workers feel that there is something sinister at play here. When the last two dwarfs disappeared in the middle of the night their packs were still present and they had said nothing to their close friends about wanting to desert. The foreman has now offered a reward if you can help figure out what is happening and put an end to it or just keep the workers in line long enough to get the job completed.

Meanwhile, most of the humans took to the shore and tried to confront the riders that have been following them. One of the riders held out a palm toward them as some sort of sinister signal before they both rode off and out of sight. That's a mystery whose time will come, but not yet...

The party has met back up at the docks to decide what to do next.

Re: OOC Off topic
Connor has had people signaling to him for quite a while. Near the beginning of his adventures the party discovered the wreck of an ambushed coach on the road as they traveled to Altdorf. One of the bodies among the dead bore a striking resemblance to Connor and carried a note identifying the corpse as Kastor Lieberung and indicated that there was a large inheritance waiting for him. A plan was devised to impersonate Kastor and claim the windfall for himself.

Unfortunately, being Kastor came with some baggage. People keep trying to signal to him, usually by scratching their nose with the little finger of one hand and sticking the thumb of the other hand in their ear with the other fingers extended. When they don't get the signal back that they're looking for, they flee. Furthermore, it turned out that the inheritance letter was a fake, the lawyer's office named on it did not even exist. It had been the ruse of a bounty hunter named Adolphus Kustos who was after Kastor. Mistaking Connor for Kastor, Kuftos and some thugs attacked the party the first time they passed through Weissbruck. When he was defeated they found a letter on his body and a drawing of Kastor/Connor that explained his motives. The letter referred to a secret society and stated that Kastor holds a position of importance in that group and bears the title "Magister Impedimentae."

The last signal given by the riders was different though. The rider just held up his hand to show his palm to you before riding off. It seemed more threatening.

Yeah, it's a matter of taste. I prefer Warhammer for the simple reason fact that every encounter doesn't involve a half dozen magical effects being fired off. That, plus the historical influences on the setting just make Warhammer feel more grounded to me, you know?

Btw, are we using base armour rules?
Ulrich, Imrak and Grimgrin all seem to wear mail armour.
Still their Ag is pretty high.
As mail armour - per advanced rules - penalizes Ag by 10 that would mean Ulrich has Ag51, Grimgrin 41 and Imrak 43.
Pretty impressive at 1st career?

Re: OOC Off topic
Welp ladies and gentlemen, allow me to change your world. The Powder Mage trilogy has launched to my second favorite book series off all time. It's got heavy military themes (Napoleonic feel to it), a crazy magic system (Traditional mages called Privileged that are treated as a step above most people because they can kill with a twitch of their fingers, powder mages that can ingest gunpowder to increase their abilities to a  superhuman level and control gunpowder with their mind to keep bullets in air longer or give them an added boost, and knacked which can't really do magic but have one magic quirk like not needing sleep, not needing to eat, tell when someone is lying and the like), a coup, and a hell of a fleshed out history to all of the Nine(Nine countries that make up a quasi-europe)

"The Age of Kings is dead, and I have killed it." is the books tagline. The book opens with a coup, where the Field Marshall, Tamas, has killed the Royal Cabal (the kings own Privileged) to have no one to stop him from sending the King to the Guillotine. On the lips of the dying Privileged was the same thing. "You can't break Kresimir's Promise." Kresimir is the God that created the world. So Tamas recruits a Knacked with a perfect memory to find out what Kresimir's Promise is. The book has a view POV characters, Tamas for one, Adamat the Knacked Investigator, Taniel Two-Shot who is Tamas's son, a Hero in his own right, and Nila a laundress.

I don't want to spoil too much, but it's a phenomenal series. Of the three the first book has the lowest amazon review score of 4.4.

Dear God... someone read this so we can talk about it.

My first favorite is Harry Potter, but it's because of the nostalgia, I started reading HP when I was like 12, and finished it on the flight to Iraq. I've read that series probably... 10 times through?

I've read the powder mage books three times (which is a lot since it came out in 2013), just finished it for the third and right after I finished the novellas, I started the first book in audiobook.

Oh please nothing beats the classics like the Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser Series (Lankhmar) by Fritz Leiber pre-Tolkien which had many utterly interesting elements and flair for the dramatic. Among others of course that pre-date Tolkien from truly brilliant writers.

My favorite series is Flashman, brilliant historical fiction filled with black humor. Fantasy is Glen Cooks Garrett stories, fantasy detective series.

Svlad Sejelli:
What is your first favorite series?
What exactly do you mean by this "first" ? Chronologically or indeed "the best you've ever read" ?
Considering the exposure to Fantasy literature at the kind of age Connor mentions... difficult question.
The Crystal Shard, i.e. Drizzt Do'Urden was 1988, right ?
Dragons of Autumn Twilight was 1989, right ?
Dragon Wing, i.e. Death Gate Cycle was still later, 1990 ?
All those are "D&D"-books, if you will.
Fritz Leiber ? Sheesh, chuckle, just how old are you Carlot ? I don't think many on RPoL know these two.
I think I have to quote The Sword of Shannara (1977) myself if the question aims at chronology. Followed by Feist's Riftwar Saga (Magician being of 1982).
Indeed Feist's definitely is my "best I've ever read", too.

I think the fifth one is the best if the first five. They just keep getting better from there.

If you can pick up Side Jobs. There are a number of stories that take place in-between books from the series. It helps fill you in on some things he references.

Well, I take the actual distribution of the rods a trifle.
Surely that is not a obstacle to the continuation of the story ???
