Re: Practices

Ben came out in t-shirt and shorts, carrying his helmet. Laying it down, he did some star jumps and squat thrusts to loosen up, and listened to hear what he was to be doing...

Right. Coach Nevers... he looked round, spotted the man and jogged over. Put his helmet on and paid attention to directions. Running and catching, always fun. As always he put his full effort into what he was doing.

B Coach

The whistle Blew  again,  Sims  brought the backs  and  recievers  in with  the Quarterbacks. By  now there  was  about 1500 fans in the  stands, taking pictures and walking around  the stadium track..it was rtoped off so they could not  get too close, but those who wanted  could get good  Pictures.

The Dragonette, worked the crowds, with programs and  'newsletter' rosters  that had  al the names of the people still on the team...better programs  would be available on game days...more the one Dragonette was asked to pose with  people (mostly guys)...as well as highschool cheerleaders in thier uniforms ( who were encouraged  bt TV ads to show up that way)

The local News  and ESPN reporters  moved through the field a, like the pros  they are.  never being in the way, but getting good shots  for thier bosses.

The  LBs  and DBs MOved togther to practice  coverages, and shifting from  one type of coverage to another, the OLine  and D line were pulled together, first working on This offense's picks ups  and blocking  , then playing the Skins  for the Defnese to work on thier  shifts  and games.

...................

Through the Course  of the practice. way down at the other end of the field, Kat, Smokey and the Longsnapper  worked on thier co-ordination... Two boys  who won a raffle..got to hsag balls for kat  and would run them back to the center as she practiced...at first, there was  some missed snaps, and missed kicks..but  now  and again, there was the perfect hold..the perfect kick...and as they worked..there were more and more of them.

The  wideouts  , TEs  and BAcks  too turns Lining up, Fillings  and Steele would  cycle though the set, then the other  take over, then do it  again....mostly working at calls  at the line, shifting  and Motion, and   the warparound draws...every now  and  again they would  have a wideout  do an end  around.

Fillings Looked sharpe, seemed to know his play  book quite well, only one or two passes were high, or 'lead too much'...these were greeted  by shouts  from  Sims, Nevers  and the QB  coach.

Steele, had a bit of trouble, he would stammer out a few of the  calls  at the line, , He and Beth collided once on an end  around, that resulted in Lucas  covering the lost fumble...many of his  throws  were behinf the reciever on crosses,  and almost every throw to  Bronk, was 'a bit too high' regardless of how high the wideout Jumped.

These were greeted, at first, By curses  and shouts.towards Steele's third  set, he pulled  steele  over to him by the facemask, nose to nose  as he  made punlic  note of the fact, that the PAsses to Bronk seemed to  be worst then those to the others, though, in truth, he even overthrew  Beth and Ben...the passes to Ben would , most likely, be turnovers..since  the routes  were ins  or curls....The LAst Time Sims  Pushed Steele to stand  next  to the QB Coach and himself,  as he waved Bronk over to throw...This was Greeted, By Bronk shaking his head swearing  as he Jogged over..Sims..who was close to  his boiling Point Grabbed Bronk by the pads, and shouted,Look son...I'm here to win games...all of us  are here to win game...and , by god...if it means you  behind the center..then that's where your gonna be....IS>...THAT..UNDERSTOOD!

Bronk looked more then a little surprised at this...he just nodded and said,Yea ..Caoch... Its Just I think I'm better... he pointed to the wideout spot , but never  got to finsh as Sims Shouted again,

Son!  When this is your  team..You can tell people where to play...right now..its  mine...and by god...you'll do what it take to  get us a W on the damn board.... he turned  and  shouted to  the rest of the team..IS....THIS...UNDERSTOOD?  the  players, and coaches  looked up most of them Nodded  or looked down...They are now  seeing Sims's Game face...

The Fans  loved it..to see fire  from thier  coach..and after  watching the Jags, lo these many years..it was nice to see players taking heat..perhaps..it  made the fans  feel..well..like the players were working for thier money?

Bronk Turned  to the Center, who Nodded  with a Halfsmile, and began to call plays the routes at the Line... though a few of his passes  did  sail high  on the Outs, they were not greeted  by as much concern, as those  would not have been picked off...as Adam warmed up..the Balls were hissing  to the recievers and backs, on Hooks , curls  and outs  they  where in the numbers or well within reach of thier  hands...On deep passes, they  were..long...Beth and Givens having to push to get to them, those that they didn't, would not  have been picked..Though Givens  too alot  of heat, each time he dropped one, beth..Dropped only one, as she worried more about the sidelines then the ball..which was greeted  By Nevers in her face explain the value of catching the ball, AND getting her feet down..not one or the other!

Ben, Lucas and the other BAcks  and TEs were having a ball...thier shorter  quicker routes, where thier   by the time thier head  came  around, Bronk even started to adlib a bit, faking at End  around to  Givens, then Hitting Beth On a deep post, then faking a wrap around to Lucas, and  Hitting Ben on a deep seam route...

While all this was Going  on Steele stood next to Sims  and The QB Coach..it would be pointed out to him, everything  Bronk did right, that he had done wrong.. Fillings  just stgood there and grinned, now  and again shouting a 'way-to-g0'...Steele stewed...it was not until they were ready to end this part of practice, that he saw  the Two QBs  they were bringing in for workouts....they had been there throughout practice, as Yuto explained  some of the basic things to them and they watched  what went on..

Re: B Coach

Ben didn't really care who threw balls... he just ran his routes as hard as he could and went for every ball that came his way as if the Superbowl itself depended on it.

He found the concept of practising in front of a crowd a bit unnerving, though he could see the point - he'd snuck in to watch enough practices himself as a kid before he was big enough to be on the field, and knew that for those who made the effort to come to practise, the players would become THEIR team in a more real way than for those who just turned up on match days.

In breaks between running routes, he waved at the crowd and when the opportunity presented himself he talked to any youngsters near enough, asking them if they'd played much touch or flag 'ball, and which position they preferred.

Re: B Coach

Beth, too, didn't care that much about who was throwing the football, only that it was getting to her and not to the defense.  She had to admit that it was impressive that Steele was managing to overthrow her.  That was a pretty rare event, she had found.  She ran the respective plays reasonably well, having spent some time in the evening studying the playbook.  She'd also studied what she could of the defenses' plays, so she could have an idea of what they might be doing, both in the event she got the opportunity to play on D and that she might use that information to her advantage.  She found herself getting a lot of deep throws, simply because of her position and her height, but she did have a thing about worrying about going out of bounds.  That was when Nevers got in her face.  She took the verbal abuse as well as anyone else did, she figured, and once he had pointed it out, she made it a point to not worry as much about the sideline or if there was a defender in her way as she was trying to catch the ball.

She was perfectly used to large crowds, having played in the Big Ten, and she chatted passingly with a few fans, but not for more than a few seconds at a time, since she was obviously quite busy.  Still, she did end up shaking the hands of more than a few women and young girls who were at the practice.  While she wasn't consciously thinking it, she knew that her presence might draw more female fans to the team.

Re: B Coach

Lucas had finished up his own warm ups when the rest of the group started filing into the practice area and then the coaches.  He put his items up, helmet on, and made his way on field to one of his normal positions.

He didn't enjoy the sharp hand offs or the sloppy tosses he'd get from Steele, but he swallowed his pride and thoughts about wanting to sack the QB himself when he made a mess of the play.  He hoped that the Coaches and owners would see how he was playing, but when they pulled him off field it put a wider smile on his face when Bronk filled the spot.

He gave the wildcat and nod of approval but knew that like himself he'd fill any spot thrown at him.  Though he was much better in the spot he was currently in.  He'd been a wide out when he first started but roughed up too many players who got in his way, which in turn the coaches handed him a HB/FB position just for the smash and bash habit he had.

Re: B Coach

The Fans   were still coming into practise, the  Dragonettes acting  as Hostesses  as well as  cheerleaders. Pictures were taken, papers  and photos signed..a small fortune  was being made  by the PR Deptment with Glossy photos  of the Players Yuto Suggested be sold..Steele, KAt, Bronk, Ben , Worth, Miles, Beth ( though her pics  had her in her practice Uniform as they rushed them off)..Givens..Best...even Smokey...a few others were there as well..mostly Vets  who came from other teams, more  pics  would be updated  as the Team became  more filled out

The whistle Blew  and Sims CAlled out,10 plays...'touch scrimmage' YOu tackle some one, or cut some one  on a block, you'll be running laps  until the superbowl..got that!

As everyone nodded  he  Motioned to the 20 yard line,  Duke!  Take the first team out...the first 5 plays...

Steele had his helmet halfway on when he looked at Fillings who shrugged and Jogged  down to the 10, in the Huddle he said, Right, 5 plays..all reads. all line up as soon as the ball's placed...lets get out of here with no one hurt!

The first play was a pass to Ben, a 8 yard  curl,,,second play was called  at the line, sending both backs out to the flats while Bronk, Beth and Ben streaked down field, Lucas  caught the ball for  an 8 yard gain again...The third  Play He Hit Beth on a slant, she just got her head around in time to see the ball..pick up of 11...Bronk Caught  a hook for 10  Then he faked to Mik and  Hit  Ben on an Out  for 7 more...the ball ended on the D's  43..the D was tired...

Sims  called   for bronk to take the next 5.... Bronk  learned his lesson and just nodded...looking into the Huddle, Givens  had  take  his place at Wide out...Steele was seething as  he walked up and down the sideline...alright, dammit..Help me look good folks. just because  we have  5  plays, doesn't mean we have to use them all..first play Givesn  and Beth..out  and ups..I'll pump to one of you on the out, both of you go up..Ben  you got the middle, both backs hit the flats...on one..

as they left the Huddle he saw the defense  gather up a bit closer..getting ready to touch the ball carrier , when and if the ball arrived, he called the signal  took the snap and dropped back, he set  and Pumped to Givens, The DBAck Bit..Both Givens  and Beth were open Long, Beth's DB just gave her a halfhearted push, and ...helped her get down field.. Bronk shifted his shoulders  and let the Ball go..the crowd.. some 2000 now...stood and yelled...the Ball sailed..and Beth put all she had into  taking off up field... she  pulled the  ball in when she reached  the one...and stopped her run at the abck of the endzone..Ref's hands when up...Sims  smiled and shook his head.

..Ok Steele..you get 4 plays with the 2nd team...lets see what you can do...

Bronk had been Jumping in the air  when he saw Beth Pull the ball in..for a guy who didn't  want to be back there..he sure seemed to be enjoying it.

he ran down field  and greeted her at the 5 on her  way back, way to not give up...lots of  others would have ran the  route half speed..good job!

Jogging back to the sidelines Givens ( who was 2nd team now) said,Hey..Bronk..I was open..why didn';t ya throw the damn thing to me!

Bronk sorta  laughed,..if you have to ask? I would be wasting my time telling you!

For the first time, the players who were coming off, got to see little signs in the stands " Bronk's  Bombers"..." Kat's Kittens"..." Hope's Honeys"...And.."The Dragonette Guys"..a group of  fans had  samuri robes on, one held a sign " Worth's Warriors"

Steele Stood in the Huddle. Still a bit angry as the players  waited his call...

Celeste made her rounds with the girls.  Showing off a couple new cheers that her and the girls had already unanimously agreed to changing up.  The idea for the costumes was in the works as well which helped to lighten up the mental load that Celeste kept to herself over.

Seeing a few other younger girls eager to meet her, she walked over and make introductions.  When the heat hit the field, Celeste amiably turned and rooted, cheering on Bronk and the offensive line.  She had a few defensive aquaintances as well and she agg'ed them on too.

Lucas nodded and hoo-rah'ed the offensive line for the good work they've done so far with Bronk and Fillings as the QB.  He got a smirk on his face when Bronk happily took back the spot as wide receiver and even catching the ball.

When Steele took the field for the last bit, Lucas bit back and pushed through the line defending the QB when needed.  The arrogance that Lucas felt from Steele was as ripe as a sour apple.

Re: B Coach

Bronk was  a bit  at ease, taking a cup of powerade from the tray, he walked to the far end of the bench and  sat down, his helmet on his lap as he leaned on it, taking a sip, waiting to see what Steele was going to do with his  4 plays.

Sims walked down the line to be near the 20..Lewis  could be heard questiong  whether his Players parents were ever married, and how many of his players even liked girls...

Over his shoulder to Bronk he said,..You just made it easy for me son.. I'm not  signing  either of those  two QBs...I am picking up an extra  wideout, or Kickreturner..depends who's out there...

 What?  Why?...

because i have  3 QBS right now...and You'll not be returning kicks anymore..and none of the  other QBs  can play wideout..so when you are in there..we are going to need  another set of hands.  Sims   wasn't asking..he  was telling,  There is  a chance that Collins might be let go from San Diego...if that happens...we'll being him here...but that means one of the other two gotta go...You'er a wideout..but you'er also the #3...i won't have 4...

Bronk stared at Sims  back, Sims  was close enough to talk  to him, but kept his eyes one the field, Bronk Knew others  could hear what he was saying if they were close enough..what the hell was he  doing?  Fillings  Looked at Bronk from the Bench..his eyes were wide  as he saw Yuto shaking  hands witht the 2 QBs  who came to watch practice..they were going home now, to wait  for phone calls  from someone else...Bronk leaned back on the bench, as he finshed off his  drink and tossed the  crushed cup into the container..Shoulda went to Hamilton....

Fillings' smile was not there any longer. More then one player  was passing what they heard  down the Line, pointing at the backs of the QBs  who....almost got to work out...for the Dragons. Bronk was by himself  now, as others  mOved off, Nevers  and Sims  moving closer to the sidelines to yell out  at Steele  and the 2nd team.

Lu -Ti stood on the track some yards  away from the Bench, looking worried  at Bronk who was still shaking his head  as he watched Steele in the huddle.

Bethany smiled at Bronk.  "Thanks.  Don't see much point in not going full out.  Isn't much of a practice if you're only going halfway, you know?  Nice throw, too," the woman said.  She then let Bronk have his conversation with Sims while she walked over near Coach Nevers.

"Coach Nevers?  I was wondering if, when second team is out, if there would be issue with me taking some reps at corner with the defense?  I played cornerback for years at college and if we get into a tight spot during the season, it might be useful". She'd just been on the first team, and since Steele had taken out the second team, that seemed like an appropriate time to ask to her.  Also, she had noticed the defense had kind of been getting carved up a bit.  She wasn't going to say that, but it seemed the offense was doing way better than the defense.

Of course, part of that was she kind of really wanted to intercept Steele to drive a couple points home to the quarterback, but she wasn't going to say that, either!

When Ben got to take a break, he grabbed a drink then looked up at the stands.

Hope's Honeys? HOPE'S HONEYS????

He began to grin as he strolled in that direction, sipping his drink.

"Hey there, good to see you! How are you enjoying the practice so far?" he said.

He stood chatting for a few minutes, but when he finished his drink he took his leave.

"Sorry, got to get back to work now. And don't want to get cold... Great to meet you, though - who's coming to the game? See you then!"

Coach Nevers smiled at Beth, ya done good out there Lady, Now I wouldn't care if you go take a snap or two. But Sims...If he's look at  your first string? No way you'll be  on that side of the ball..not until we throw a bunch of folks out  for two minute warnings... I'll be Honest with you...Coach Lewis is the Head D man here....He'll have to settle , in the end, for what Sims  says..But i know he's noit real fond  of Ladies  playing  Men's pro ball..he figures   the ladies have thier own leagues....

He looked up at her,..You guys came  around at the right time.Amoto is a promotor...He signed you becuas e he thought you Ladies could do the job, as well as tweak some Noses in the NFL. Just settle into Offense  first..we'll see about  getting yuou some plays on D as the preseason goes on.

   ................................................

The women in the section , Ben wanted  towards  Rose up and Hollared They called out his name, waved some of the glossy photos they just bought...they all answered YES to coming to the game.

....................................................

STeele's  First Pass Flew over  Sim's  head and hit the bench about  two feet from Bronk, Givens and Missed the cut  anyway, Bronk just watched the ball bounce around and said to Givesn as he picked it up,..one of the closest passes he got to me today......the next play6 was a  draw to Klay, The Sims  caught a slany for 9, his last pass was picked off by Best who ran it in for a TD...Sims Blew the whistle and broughtb everybody in.

A;lright now..pretty god showing  by the offesne,But the Defesne needs to ...at least..pretend  they know how to play football..huh? We have  an hour Break the classrooms...then supper, then you folks ae off  for the night...Pads  and hitting  Friday moring...I know...its the day befire the game, but? You want to play, yuou need to be ready...if you'er going to get hurt..may as well it get  out of ther way...20 minute Positions  classes...then 30 minute  Offesne and Defense meetings.... 15 minute QB  meeting right after,...bring your play books and pens....if you think yuou knowm it all?  You best be able to prove it....Dismissed....

All the coaches  walked towards the steps leading up to Yuto's Office, as the players.

The spen  Chicvk hustled  about to Grab who she could for  some sound bites,Adam?  Bronk? What is your take, on  the Dragons looking to Pick up  Cole Collins  from Sandiego?

Adam shrugged,..he's  a good  man, great arm..good leader...great role  model for  young fans. He sent  alot  of recievers to the pro bowl in his time with  the Chargers.  We'll have to see what he things on running  an offense like ours though...  he nodded and moved  off...

Mr. STeele...what is your take on that rumor?

Steele looked at the Camara, he tried to push bback  the sour  taste he had from this practice,They just sent  Andrew Anders, one of the best running QBs in college 2 years ago,...away. The other  Guy with him, Mike Hicks, OB  for Temple..young guy, can move...so? if they  are sending away yong guys  like that? I'm not  too worried  about an old guy coming in here...

He moved off as  She caught up to Beth and Ben, getting them both on camara at the same time,..how about you two...you might be rookies, but everyone is  a rookie on this team!...What to you think of the talk, of maybe  bringing in the 10 year Vet from San Diego as another  QB?

Bethany nodded to Coach Nevers.  "Thanks Coach," she said to the man.  She liked him, despite that he yelled in her face.  That was a coach's job, so it wasn't like she was going to hold that against him.

When the ESPN lady caught up with them, Bethany shrugged a little.  "I'm sure that if the management feels we need another option at quarterback that fits our culture here, then they'll do what they need to do in order to land that quarterback," Bethany said.  It was pretty PC and polite, and put the team's culture first.  That much, Bethany knew, was something management would want to hear coming from their players.

"Yes, Ma'am," he said when she was done. "It's good to have depth and a range of experience, especially in that position. The management here are thinking long and hard about building a durable, sustainable team, one that really IS a team rather than a collection of individuals in matching jerseys."

Kat found herself talking with Smokey on the sidelines for most of the scrimmage. The two went over different plans. She even had him holding the ball as she kicked it into a practice net. There wasn't really a chance to get on the field, but the two worked. Anything to become a cohesive unit. Anything so that, if they were called upon, they'd win a damn game for their team.

Hell, putting points on the board at all.

Kat watched the end of the scrimmage, watched Steele flame out in new, spectacular ways, and Bronk show off skills beyond being a wide receiver. Strange how the NFL worked. Kat let her other teammates take the spotlight when it came to the reporters. Another thing that she and Smokey had agreed upon was that neither of them deserved it today...

....Monday...Before  Buffalo Preseason  game ( a fridaynight  game).

Two  men stood  with  Wally Nevers, the  WR coach. One was  a Black man 5'11 or so, the other  a taller white guy about  6'3.  Both men held  green helmets ( without decals) And watched  as the    players  came into the Locker  room.

Adam Looked up at the  Picture    then to Steele,..Hey ..Big Ten?...did you take your  dates to  the Mall after you left?

Screw you Bronk...what did you.....  he looked up at the  Locker, he pulled down his  shades  and Looked..No damn way..you paid her  for that...

Taping  a   thick gauze on his  shoulder   Adam  chuckled,no..didn't pay her..what did you dates  cost you? Did you have to get them the Latest 'Pretty pony' sets?

He Pulled on his pads  and  Buckled them Up when  Nevers  called  Bronk, Fillings   and Steele over ,Alright you three...this Tall  guy is  Billy Fers...WR  from  Wisconsin... This guy is Bennie Willis  from  Arkansas  State..he was   number 5  on the  Vikings  last year...when  we go out   they are gonna  work  with the wide outs, and the QBs...Bronk? You'll show them the  routes...and   all three of you will be throwing to them...when we get into  running plays  they will be brought  back into  the locker room, and contacted  tomorrow  on whether they made the   Team..so give them all you got.. if either of them have  what it takes to be  a Dragon, we  want to get them  on the field  for a series or two on friday.

Fers  laughs   a bit, This little  guy is  a Wideout...and  a Quarter back? C'mon coach I thought this  was serious...

Adam shook his head and  turned to  go put on his practice  jersey, Christ..another  Big Ten Jagoff....

Steele   just nodded  and turned to get ready..

Fillings  looked at the two  new  guys  and said,..The Little guy's the Number 1...you guys  are brought in because  our  number  2 went  down...keep that in mind , before you shoot  your   'newguy' mouth off...

Fillings  headed towards the  field  .

Nevers Chuckles, not  a smart  way to start off there kid..good luck out there...

The Trio  headed out  Followed by Bronk who was still shaking his head, Steele Looked up at the Pictire  one more time  and  pointed to it,Anyone else think this is fake?

Givens  raised his hand, but he was the Only one. Miles  and  the  O-line  moved like  a unit towards the field, what's  a matter  Steele? You jealous because  Bronk's  date  didn't need a booster seat?

Bronk  and Nevers  set up some  cones  for   line-of-sight, to  have the  recievers know the nagles the QBs  would be expecting.  Nevers  called the TEs  over  as well, Bronk  ran  two reps  of each pattern, one  form each side...he was  stressing getting your  head  around  and  accelerating into the  cuts to gain sepration...Willis  listen  and  watched, Fers  seemed  boared  and would nod,  when Bronk looked  at him, to see  if  he was even in the same stadium..

the  QBs spread out so they each  had  a line of  Recievers..the  reciers would move from one line to the other Until they ran   the same pattern for each QB.

Bronk was taking his reps  at QB, he or Fillings would  tell the  two new  guys what they did  wrong, or what they  needed to  a bit  Better..Bronk snapped at Givens  when he didn't get his head  around fast enough  ont time  and the ball handcuffed him.

Willis  worked  hard, his  year in the NFL helped him  and it appeared he had the desire...Fers ran well enough, but  was rounding off his  cuts, and was Lazy  about getting  his head  around..Fillings  Snapped  at him for that, and  he as the Tall Wideout got into Bronk's  Line....when the  Man failed to get his head around  on the Cut, He  was Greeted  by a  Bullet to the Side of the  Head,  he fell to the Ground, as Bronk snapped,..That's  why you get your head  around,  Jagoff...

The  Big  man got  up his face red  with  embarrassment and anger...Bronk turned to Steele,no damn wonder the Big Ten sucks in bowl games...Hey..Coach?..any Pac 10 guys out there..they can catch...

As the QBs   dropped back and fired  again, Willis  had  Run for Bronk this time, His head  and hand s were up as he planted his foot  and caught the ball neatly on the  run...

As they readied  for  the next drill Nevers  came over  and asked the Three, whata ya think?

Steele  shrugged,  I like the Big  guy..bigger target..he's just nervous...

Fillings   shook his head, Willis   seems to know what he's doing..good hands too...

Bronk nodded, Willis..the other  guy has  an attitude problem..we already have one Givens..we don't  need two...

Re: B Coach

Lucas came on the field with everyone else and watched the newbies line up and fall out.  He stood quietly listening to the others banter between themselves.

Re: B Coach

Lucas looked at Klay and Mik and slightly cocked his head at their question.

Maybe, he said cautiously.  What spawned that idea?

This was something definitely unexpected.

Re: B Coach

Sims  was  watching films...Bronk pointed out some of the blocks  you made, and he said   if he had a lead man like that on returns, he could take atleast 3  or  4 back  for TDs..Sims  mentioned the  fact, that Bronk would only get a few token runbacks...and he said  they eaither of us  would benefit as well...and...well..I'm  not about to argue..eh?.

he's  right...we have to follow  each other 's blocks on screens  and   runs?  why not keep the team together on returns?
