Re: Campaign Log
PROLOGUE:

This adventure begins three days after the events in the previous adventure, Serenity: Hard Burn.  Following their final meeting with their former employer, Rafael Bettencourt, the intrepid crew traveled to New Dunsmuir, Beaumonde, and checked into The Celestial Dragon Hotel.  Over the next three days, several crewmembers leave the fellowship to pursue their own futures, leaving only Stacey, Cole, Makani and Lydia at the hotel, and Greg at the abbey, to seek out a new ship.  Those remaining use the time to replenish their gear with their profits from the Bettencourt mission.

Chapter 1: Of Brass Pelicans and Celestial Dragons...

On their third day at the hotel, the crew is summoned to meet with Mama Fong.  They meet with her in The Brass Pelican, along with her son Tommy and the ever-present Chu.  The story of Talia Electra's fate is related, and Mama accepts the news.  She agrees to help the crew, then departs from the bar, leaving Tommy to complete the details.  Lydia surprises everyone by insisting that she is also responsible for Talia's death, requests that Tommy use his contacts to find and kill her husband, and then leaves her fate in Tommy's hands.  After tense moments, Tommy refuses to get involved in Lydia's affairs, insisting that the case is closed and Lydia free of blame.  He then departs to provide the help he promised in finding a ship.  The ensuing drama involves Lydia being scolded by some of the crew, soothed by others, with nothing being resolved.

The next several days are spent interviewing prospective new crewmembers and searching for a ship to purchase.  While there is no luck with the ship, there are several applicants for crew positions who are promising.  The chapter closes at this point.

Re: Campaign Log
Chapter 2: Have I Got a Deal For You...

The new day (and Chapter 2) gets under way with the old crew members meeting the new ones at the Brass Pelican.  For security purposes, the old crew has decided to refer to Lydia as Lily, and this is how she's introduced.  Joining the crew are Luka Gabor (pilot), Lionel "Bear" Wallace (engineer), Kinny Halmack (doctor), Jin Chu (electronics expert/hacker), and Di (thief, scrounger).  After a period of introductions and information exchange, Stacey delegates some dutie, primarily geared toward acquiring a ship.  Jin and Di research some information regarding the difficulties they have encountered finding a ship.  Cole, Luka, and Bear form a separate group to look for available ships.  Makani, Lydia (Lily), and Kinny head to the shopping district to find a suitable gift for Mama to show their appreciation and gratitude for her assistance.

Di and Jin research some leads given to them by Stacey, finding little of consequence, other than background information.  Makani, Lydia, and Kinny purchase scarves, both for themselves and as gifts for Mama Fong.  They also go into a tea shop, where they also purchase tea as a gift for Mama Fong.  Stacey and his group go to a salvage yard (Sally's Salvage) recommended to them by Bear.  There they are given a lead (Mr. Bradshaw) for a ship that might be looking for a crew.

Di and Jin plan to pay a visit to one of the leads given them by Stacey, but before they can leave, their efforts are redirected upon the return of Stacey's group.  Stacey has Jin research the lead given them by Sally and then has her establish contact with him.

The lead from Sally is a contractor/agent named Bradshaw.  Research uncovers little of interest, but indicates an individual new to the job.  Stacey speaks to Bradshaw, arranging a meeting with Bradshaw's client (Mr. Rooney) on the following day.

Meanwhile, the three girls suddenly find themselves witnesses to a violent incident.  A woman is shot and killed in the street by Interpol agents, her dying breath a defiant shout.  The three girls hasten to return to the hotel, where Makani and Lydia retreat to their rooms.  Kinny, though, meets with Stacey and Cole and informs them of the incident.

The evening ends uneventfully, but not before a news vid is seen on the terminals in the bar.  The vid reports on an attempted robbery and Interpol's response in which the criminals are killed.  One of the dead is the same woman that the three girls saw killed.

Morning comes, and Di, Luka, and Bear notify the Captain that they have reconsidered the job opportunity and have decided to remain on Beaumonde.  Di leaves immediately, but Bear contacts Sally to see if replacements for him and Luka can be found.  Sally soon speaks to the Captain with replacements for the pilot and the engineer.  A Cortex interview is arranged for later in the day, after the Rooney meeting.

The meeting with Rooney almost turns disastrous when he is offended (justly or unjustly) by the crew's questions.  The man himself is a cripple, hobbling around with the help of two canes, and his face bears burn scars.  He describes the job as a simple passenger run, taking a group wherever they want to go.  However, he is unable to answer several questions from the crew to their satisfaction.  He leaves, giving the crew until that night to confirm if they want to take the job.  Kinny leaves the bar to purchase additional medical items.

The two prospective crew replacements are interviewed by Stacey.  He seems satisfied, as do they, and an agreement is made to contact again when the job is firm.  Stacey then tries to contact Bradshaw, finally getting through in the late afternoon.  The crew is notified to be prepared to move aboard the ship the following day, and the crew begins preparations, including notifying the two new crewmembers to meet at the hotel the following morning for transportation.  Everything seems to be falling into place, but that evening, Stacey, Cole and Jin see a newsvid that shows the dead body of Kinny.  Apparently she was killed in an Interpol raid on a terrorist cell.

Stacey notifies the crew overnight, and they face the new day, prepared for whatever may greet them.

Re: Campaign Log
Chapter 3: If It Looks Like a Duck, and Quacks Like a Duck, It's a Duck!

Early the next morning, the crew prepares to leave their lodgings at the Celestial Dragon Hotel, and congregate in the restaurant to wait for  transportation to the ship, to be provided by Bradshaw at 10:00. Burne Catweazle (the new prospective pilot) and Frank Shelby (the new prospective engineer) arrive and join the crew in the restaurant.  They barely are able to introduce themselves when Stacey is notified that Mama Fong will see the crew in ten minutes to offer her farewells.  The crew (less the two newcomers) meet with Mama at the appointed time, finding her even frailer looking than just a few days earlier.  They present their gifts to her, then wait for the transportation to the ship.

Bradshaw arrives with transportation and takes the crew to the ship, where they discover that the ship, named "The Ugly Duck", is an old Alliance naval vessel, an Alliance Landing Ship for Tanks, or ALST.  The crew is taken on a tour of the vessel by Bradshaw and find that it has been extensively reconfigured as a passenger ship. The crew disperses to explore the ship on their own, awaiting arrival of the passengers.  The passengers soon arrive, consisting of 5 women and a man.  The leader of the group is named Madame Tang, and it soon becomes evident that the passengers are a troupe of "soiled doves" (and one soiled hawk) who have hired the ship to take them to various ports of call so they could ply their trade.  In addition, they plan on using the ship as their place of business, designed to offer not only the attentions of the troupe, but a place to relax and have a drink or twelve.  Madame Tang explains that the two groups on the ship, while having full run of ship and sharing chores and such, are not to become involved in any hanky-panky with one another.  With the ground rules set, the crew and passengers disperse to settle into their "home away from home".

Soon, Madame Tang provides the Captain with their destination:  the Corone Mining Consortium settlement at Crystal Wells, Whittier.  At the same meeting, Stacey obtains Madame Tang's permission to modify the ship to accomodate Burne's homemade fighter.  A departure date is set, 3 days hence.  During those 3 days, the modifications are made, and Burne brings her fighter to the Duck and secures it in the newly fabricated docking clamps on the Duck's top hull, just aft of the shuttle.  She also brings her hovercycle and secures it in the hover mule bay.  Also during those final days before launch, additional provisions and supplies are acquired, and the crew becomes familiar with their new ship.  Finally, crewmembers who had kept a portion of their funds out of the hotel safe and in their rooms discover that their former crew-mate, Di, absconded with some of their money.

All in all, though, on the the eve of their departure, all is in readiness.

Hopefully.

Re: Campaign Log
Chapter Four:  And a Good Time Was Had By...Some

The Ugly Duck took flight on schedule, and the take-off proved to be fairly uneventful.  The passengers had stayed off-ship during the past few days, but they now gathered in the galley, offering an opportunity for everyone to get to know each other a little better.

Interestingly enough, the meeting did little to bring together the two groups, but instead created conflict amongst crewmembers, which was resolved over the next several days.

The ship landed outside of Crystal Wells, Whittier, three days later.  Burne and Frank performed their duties in an exemplary manner, to include a superb landing in a field on the outskirts of the town.  The location was chosen over the spaceport to allow some privacy and reduced noise levels.  They were met by a foreman from the Corone Mining Consortium, by far the largest corporate presence on the mining planet, and also the contracting party for Madame Tang and her entourage.  Greg, Madame Tang, and Dem departed in the ship's hovermule to go into town...Greg to see his church's representative and Madame Tang to see the Corone leader and to do some other coordination.  Burne and Jin also left together to see the town and do some shopping.  During their trip, Burne and Jin encountered some locals who asked for undefined help, then disappeared.  Trying to follow them, the two women then encountered Corone security personnel, who turned them away from that part of town.

Madame Tang and Dem, as well as Burne and Jin, returned to the ship in the late afternoon/early evening, and The Ugly Duck prepared for the night's festivities.  Several trucks appeared, loaded with equipment and workers to create an additional area for the guests at the bottom of the cargo ramp.  Under the scrutiny of Madame Tang, the ship was transformed into a bright, colorful venue designed to promote an atmosphere of gaity and excitement.  A contingent of Corone security personnel arrived as well, to ensure security.

The evening's festivities began with the arrival of two transports containing 20 or so members of the Corone management on Whittier.  The group proved to be tractable, and soon Madame Tang's associates began to entertain the guests in the manner charactersistic of their profession.  Every guest seemed to greatly enjoy themselves, and the evening was approaching its conclusion when the security team responded to the arrival of someone referred to as a "runner" by some, and a "criminal" by others.  Regardless, the man was roughly treated by the guards, and any attempt to intervene by the Duck's crew was rebuffed.  A transport finally arrived, taking away the prisoner.

The evening's activities came to a close with Stacey calling a meeting of the crew to discuss the irregularities noted by many members, and Madam Tang convened a similar meeting in the lounge area.  During the meeting, two radio waves, one outgoing and one incoming, were detected and recorded by the ship's comm array.  Burne and Jin decided to wait until morning to try and decode them.  The Captain and Cole developed a plan to possibly allow any "runners" to enter the ship the following night.
