Re: Chapter 2: Have I Got a Deal For You...
(Brass Pelican)

Jin's attempt to contact Bradshaw was initially unsuccessful...perhaps they had not allowed sufficient time for the man to return to his office.  Several hours passed, and the afternoon sun crossed the sky.  The crew (with the exception of Kinny, who remained absent on her errands) remained in the area of the bar, waiting for contact with Bradshaw.  Two more attempts were as unsuccessful as the first...it may be that he wouldn't be available until that night.  It also became clear that they wouldn't be moving to the ship that day.

Stacey took advantage of the pause to ask Lin about meeting with Mama Fong.  The young woman told Stacey that the elderly woman was not feeling well enough to meet with them today, but that she would harbor her strength to see them in the morning.  Of course, Lin also had to add her opinion of the earlier meeting.  Although she thought the job sounded pretty easy, she also stated unequivocally that "...that King of Londinium man plenty creepy...you watch out for him, he got the evil eye."  She made a gesture to ward off any evil that the mere mention of Rooney might exert, and returned to her duties at the hotel desk.

The first patrons began to filter into the bar by late afternoon, representing mostly dockworkers ending their shift and pausing on their way home to try and forget their dull lives.  Before the crowd started to get noisy, one more attempt was made to contact Bradshaw, and this time, the screen immediately switched to show his image.  "Ah, yes...Captain Yanoro.  I was expecting your wave.  So, have you and your crew come to a decision?"

Re: Chapter 2: Have I Got a Deal For You...
(Brass Pelican)

The afternoon seemed to pass slowly as Bradshaw failed to respond and Lin's news that there would be no afternoon meeting with Lin arrived. The Captain had thanked Lin for her team's work before the meeting and thanked her too for her insight into 'the king of Londinium'. After that Stacey lingered in the bar area, discussing quietly with Cole their thoughts for the job, reaching frustrated agreement that until they met the clients there was little the pair could do.

When at last Bradshaw's image flickered onto the screen Stacey felt keen relief; things were moving again.
"We have Mr Bradshaw. Please pass on to Mr Rooney our thanks for his personal time this morning. I am pleased to say that we would like to accept your client's offer of employment, and the terms he offered. Indeed we already have two academic passengers interested in joining us.".

"My crew and I are keen to meet Mr Rooney's clients, take a tour of the ship, and understand when you expect our employment to begin proper? I trust you can help with these things Mr Bradshaw?".

Re: Chapter 2: Have I Got a Deal For You...
(Brass Pelican)

At Stacey's formal acceptance of the job, Bradshaw broke into a wide smile (with perhaps a touch of relief).  "Ah...excellent!  I believe you've made a wise decision, and Mr. Rooney will be quite pleased to hear you chose to take the job.  As a matter of fact, he was saying to me after we left this morning, "Otis, my good friend, you've done a truly outstanding job finding this crew.  I doubt anyone could have made a better choice."  I will notify Mr. Rooney immediately."

"It's fortunate you made your decision as quickly as you did.  Mr. Rooney told me that his...our...clients are anxious to get under way.  You said you could take the job on short notice, so if you did accept the job, Mr. Rooney said that he would have transportation at your hotel tomorrow morning at ten o'clock to take you and your crew, and all your gear, to the ship.  He wanted you to move on board so that you would be able to depart whenever your passengers decided.  And speaking of your passengers, he said that they would also be reporting to the ship tomorrow morning.  Oh, and you would also need to notify the two passengers that you have contracted with to be prepared to leave soon.  You can wait until you move into the ship, then have them come at some point after that.  I believe you can handle them on your own.  How does that sound?"

Stacey resisted the urge to respond when Bradshaw spoke of Rooney's praise. It was more than likley the facile broker was making the words up. Instead he listened patiently and smiled politly.
"10am? Yes, I think we could be ready to depart then. I cannot speak for our passengers, though I expect they would be able to follow soon enough - maybe a couple of hours later that day. We may have a little shopping to do too, nothing we couldn't pick up in a short trip out.".
If Rooney wanted to pick the crew up at that time he'd rather not cause complication. Makani and Lydia could follow a short time later if they chose, or if a meeting with Mama Fong beckoned.
"Go ahead and tell Rooney we'll expect his cars at 10.".

Stacey considered the smiling vacant expression on Bradshaws face, then decided against any further questions. Otis was a simple go between man.
"Thank you for you time Otis. We will look forward to meeting Mr Rooney and his clients again in the morning. Goodbye My Bradshaw.".

With that Stacey finished the conversation and severed the cortex connection. Bradshaw's image blinked to darkness.
"Did everyone get that? We're on.".

Stacey glanced around the crew present.
"Jin, please invite Burne and Frank to join us here at the Dragon by 9.30am tommorrow morning. Earlier if they fancy breakfast. Feel free to tell them what Bradshaw just told us.".

The Captain looked at the nearby Makani and Lydia.
"Ladies, would you be kind enough to meet with Mama in the morning and thank her for her hospitality? As soon as Im able I will get a message to you...probably via Lin as to where we are, and how quickly we need you to join us. I would be greatful if you could bring Scout too. Don't worry I'll tell him to behave.". He smiled faintly, pausing incase either woman needed to respond.

"Cole, Jin, Gregory, in the morning we'll head to Rooney's dock with Kinny when she gets back and see what fate has in store for us.".

"Any questions?".

"Moving quick," the big man said.  "'Bout time we get some metal back under our feet.  Dirt is too soft."

Cole cocked his head, thinking for a moment.  He glanced at Makani, Lydia, and Jin.  He then gave a little smile.

"If we have to share bunks, can I make the assignments?"

In reply to Burne Catweazle (msg #275):

(Streets of Beaumonde)

Frank let Burne talk and think, and more importantly, eat. This had been the first promise of a joint job in quite a while. They'd gotten beyond getting hopes up and getting them dashed, but this still had the feel of something that just might pan out.

"It is possible that they're not being paid much, that's true. There may be perks to the job that we have yet to see. Heck that they have yet to see." She speculated on the size of the crew. His brows rose. "I can't imagine so, but...it's a thought. But why have so many? What could they all be doing? ...Oh," he said abruptly, realizing just what so many people not directly associated with the running of a ship might be up to. "Well, could be a Robin Hood kinda crew. That'd be all right."

He burst out laughing at Burne's pirate comments. "I think they won't know to make you a squad leader or a pilot!" Another laugh, and he opened his elbow when he saw she was going to hook her arm in his. "Makes me wish I'd learned how to make heat-sink hooch," he said. "Proper grog, for a proper pirate ship."

Frank spotted another man in black, and he quickly looked away. It was dangerous to even look like you were interested to one of them.

"Honest, I get a decent feel from the captain. The others were hard to tell, no one spoke. But the captain seems all right. And we could use a turn in the Black. I spent enough time in the bowels of a planet. --Hey, and think about that! Fchu, taking off straight into vacuum, no atmo flying!"

Jin shot a look at Cole, eyebrows arched and eyes clearly telegraphing that it was a good thing she was sure he was joking, otherwise she'd have to shoot him.  The glare melted into an impish grin.  "Well I'm sure Mr Bradshaw would be flattered that you find him so pretty to look at but I don't think he's planning on coming with us."  She winked at Lily and the Captain before returning to her terminal and punching in Frank's contact number.  Wasn't likely he would have anything portable but she could at least leave a message.

Cole throws his hands up.

"Now why'd everyone go and get the wrong idea?" he asked, looking exasperated.  As he turned away, though, a smile played across his face.  "'Sides, I was just trying to be friendly."

He turned to Jin.  "And you just wait..."

Looking back at the captain, Cole continued.  "If we're going so late in the morning, should we do a stock up run tonight or in the morning?  I got something I'd like to pick up."  His eyes quickly flicked to and from Lydia, but his face was unreadable.

Re: Chapter 2: Have I Got a Deal For You...
(Streets of Beaumonde)

Frank knew how to sweet talk a girl.  Or at least Burne.   Mentioning Fchu sent shivers down her arms.  The idea of immediate response as her ship was ejected into the embrace of the Black was something she had been missing.   "You always know the right thing to say," she said to him playfully.

The tong on the other hand said different things.   It was difficult for Burne not to stare.   It was probably one of the reasons why Franke directed the conversation.  He quite literally, stole her attention with the mention of their child, a goblin fighter that they both loved.   It immediately got Burne talking about some of the things that she wanted to 'tweak'.   Like most labors of love, it would never be done.   Similarly, Frank told her about some of his ideas.

Soon enough, the two were passing through more familiar ways, and noting faces that were from their own neighborhood.  Frank tapped the datapad, and produced a large split key that undid the quarters to the berth they shared.

Inside, Burne's family greeted them.  For her, it was Fchu and her hovercycle, the next project she had a mind to get into.   For Frank, it was his tools.

"We could probably stick most of this stuff into the locks on either side of Fchu Higgs." She indicated the spot where the unfinished cry-babies were built to sit on either side of the fighter.  "We could fill the hollow baby-shells with whatever we need, tools, clothes, and the like.   Might save renting a cart.   You could drive the cycle."

Stacey concentrated on his drink trying not to chuckle as Cole was playfully teased by Jin and Lydia. The Captain couldn't resist the urge to clear his throat and look up with an evil glint in his eye.
"Cole is the first mate, maybe I should let him arrange bunks how he sees fit.".

When the first mate mentioned shopping though Stacey thought for a second then responded.
"You're right, there are a couple of things we need to pick up. Commsets in particular, but most of the day has gone and wont the more reputable suppliers be closing up by now? No, lets wait and see what Rooney has in store for us in the morning. We've warned Bradshaw we'll need to do some shopping, and besides, Rooney promised 'expenses'. One of his lackies may be able to go shopping for us.".

Stacey smiled at Gregory as the preacher stood to excuse himself.
"No problem padre. Just be ready with your gear by 9.30am tommorrow morning.".
Stacey looked around the group.
"That goes for everyone - you're free to clear up any business you need to tonight as long as you are ready for Rooney's pick up in the morning. We'll try and get an audience with Mama before moving out, but beyond that," he glanced at his watch. 5pm. "The next 16 hours are your own.".

Makani simply nodded at the Captain's request.

"I would be honored." her reply was quiet but earnest.  She had things she wanted to do before the morning, and since her 'cover' was that she was an academic researching the anthropological side of the war, there was no time like the present to begin.

She watched the others as they were given their assignments and the group fell into a good natured group.  Family, she reminded herself.  They were family, and the family was expanding to include, from the looks of things, a crazy aunt at the helm.

Things were indeed good.

Re: Chapter 2: Have I Got a Deal For You...
(Brass Pelican)

The confirmation of the job, and the knowledge that they would be moving aboard the ship tomorrow, lent an air of excitement and anticipation to the crew.  Jin left a message at the number that Frank provided, notifying them to rendezvous with the crew at the hotel at 9:30 in the morning, with their gear.  Other crew members dispersed to address their preferred activities, including a few who remained in the bar to celebrate.  Such times are usually festive...now forgotten were the misgivings that previously weighed heavily on more than one mind.  Of course, the presence of an increasing humber of bleary eyed drunks who are willing to drink a toast to ANYTHING can greatly add to the merriment and steer minds to happier subjects.

Eventually, the volume in the bar reached the point where even the vid screens were drowned out, but few people paid attention to them now anyway.  To those who happened to glance at the screens, a news story broke into the programming, with a caption at the bottom of the screen reading "TERRORIST CELL RAIDED".  It showed uniformed Interpol officers displaying confiscated weapons and bomb making materials.  It then cut to a street scene, showing 4 objects covered with red stained sheets.  Feet and an occasional hand protruding from beneath the coverings identified the objects as dead bodies that had obviously met a violent end.  As the camera moved around the bloody corpses, the carelessly draped sheet covering one of them left part of the head and left arm partially exposed, while still concealing the face.

The head was bald, and had a large, black, dragon tattoo covering most of the left side, above the ear...and the left forearm was covered by tattoos of 22 red "X"s, aligned in three rows.

Re: Chapter 2: Have I Got a Deal For You...
Burne worked with Frank to pack up what they wanted to take, and to load the crybaby shells.  Burne's tools needed their box, and thankfully the mechanic was apt enough to take out a welder and do a bit of work to give the fighter the ability to carry his gear.   The modifications weren't pretty, but then again anything called a goblin wasn't pretty to begin with, in the eyes of most folk.

The call came through around the time that was finished.  At that point the plans changed up.  "Bring everything," was something neither of the two had expected.   Their intent was still to make their final evaluation of the crew and the ship before making any solid decisions.

They took a break, shared some herbal tea, and talked about it.  Frank got Burne to agree to temporary modifications to the fighter.   The other side that would normally hold the crybaby was converted to a similar cargo space as what held his toolkit and the few belongings he wanted.

"It's easy enough to switch it back later on," Frank told Burne.  She couldn't really argue.  He had done the work with her from the very start to birth it together, and it was their baby.   Begruding him now, would only be strife, and she counted on his judgment, on this or any ship.

Frank affixed a small circle to the hoverbike she had recently purchased.  The idea to use it as a "tow" vehicle seemed wrong.  But she couldn't argue with Frank.  He was right.  It was inexpensive, and they needed to be prepared.   So they packed.   By the middle of the night, the two were set.  If this was to be their shipping out date, they would only need to come back, and fire up the engines to bring their gear to the new ship.

Burne volunteered to pay for the rickshaw to get them there by 9:30, and the trip back to get their belongings, if the two of them decided that was the route to take.   She made Frank promise, twice, that he would remove the extra mounts from the ship and bike.   Their performance flaws made her want to cringe.

Re: Chapter 2: Have I Got a Deal For You...

Cole had been enjoying his night, drinking to his last day walking on dirt.  It was amazing how, when the booze started flowing freely, no one cared which side you were on.  It was a camaraderie of brothers that knew the feeling of being in the Black or of helping those that worked the Black.  And Cole was enjoying himself.

Things turned somber, however.  Cole's attention was diverted to the vid screen when the old soldier (a former browncoat himself) stopped paying attention to what Cole was saying and was staring at the vid screen.  Cole took in the scene, feeling sorry for the four 'terrorists' that lay on the street.  As the video panned to the body with the arm hanging out, Cole felt his stomach drop.  He knew that arm.  He'd helped that arm only that morning.  Cole had a really bad feeling.

"Gorram it."

Stacey looked up from his conversation with a relaxed smile as Cole swore expecting the tall man to have simply stubbed his toe or spilled his drink. The Captain's expression darkened quickly as Cole's nod toward the vidscreen drew his gaze and Stacey took in the story with sinking realisation.

They had only known the woman for a matter of hours. Her confession the evening prior regarding her 'illegal involvements' had been frustrating, but the descion to help her out, make her family was not difficult. Stacey had hoped the cleaning of her flat that morning and her promise to set aside those activities marked the end of the matter, a new start for the woman. Now this...

He scowled, angry at the woman, the alliance, himself, and sank the reaminder of his drink. Grimly he nodded to Cole. There wasn't much else to say.
"Aye. Gorram it.".

Re: Chapter 2: Have I Got a Deal For You...
As they packed and readied themselves for a morning departure, Frank tried not to get his hopes up too high. Expectations always led to problems. Take things as they come, he told himself.

He hadn't expected to do so much welding, but the instruction to bring everything left him no choice. He felt awful having to impose on Burne to stow his things on the Fchu and slap a tow-ring on her new bike, but he knew that was the only way to do things. He didn't have enough money to hire a mule to do the towing, and he wasn't going to ask Burne to shell out coin she likely didn't have, either.

"I promise promise promise to set things right again on these two," he said as the rickshaw trundled forward. He was grateful that she offered to pay. Work on the docks had been in short supply of late, and ihs finances were tight. "I'll shave and grind 'till the balance is right again on the goblin."

Re: Chapter 2: Have I Got a Deal For You...
Franks words were honey in Burne's ears.   Their shared love of anything quick and nimble, especially Fchu, helped to give the two a sense of stability.  Shipping out together gave them family, their shared projects, a sense of home.

As the work ended late in the evening, the two finally called it quits.   They didn't have a lot, and they had been able to pack what they did have up.   Each of them had travel packs to go out at a moments notice.  The difference this time was that they would be taking everything, rather than one of them staying behind.

Burne wondered if they would be getting any of their shared deposit back on the berth quarters.

Lydia was up in her room, searching. Maybe a jingle ball... Some yawn maybe? Ooo... Some tastey treats. Ahh... There she is...

Moments later, Lydia appeared out from under the bed, holding a purring lump of feline love. She nuzzles the kitty with her nose affectionately, then looks to Makani.

"Stacey said to bring his dog... But... Mulan, she's as much a part of the crew as the rest of us... And... And she don't got no home no more, what with the Aurora bein' space dust 'n all... Ya mind, my wonderful, beautiful, talented, hoop-kicking guardian of mine? Pweeassse?"

She batted her long eyelashes and gave the most pitiful look she could muster at Makani. Perhaps too pitiful, sliding into hysterically silly.

Jin had been happily ensconced in the bar, drinking and chatting both with the crew she found herself part of and with the other patrons of the Pelican.  She had left her message earlier for Frank and Burne - "Ni hao, this is Jin Chu calling on behalf of Captain Yanoro, good to have you both on board.  Captain says we'll be seeing the ship at 10.00 tomorrow morning and our employer wants us to move in so we're ready to go as and when the passengers decide.  Be at the Celestial Dragon for 09.30 or earlier if you want to grab some breakfast with the rest of us...I can recommend the food here if it's any help.  See you tomorrow."

Not planning on getting drunk tonight (or any night come to that), Jin had just been starting to feel her head blur, that good place where all the harsh edges start softening just a bit and the world seems a more friendly place but you're still in full posession of your faculties.  Then there was a shift in the atmosphere, all eyes seemed to flick to the vid screen which had, until then, been background noise, easy to ignore.  Jin looked, blinked, looked again, checked her memory and felt the blood drain from her face.  She recognised those tattoos.  The beer turned sour in her mouth and she set the glass down.  A quick look around showed that Cole and the Captain had seen and recognised as well.  She stood and made her way over to them, legs slightly usure from shock rather than alcohol, the good place had gone away and all the edges were back sharper than ever now.  "Lao tian...Kinny?"

Makani laughed at Lydia's antics.  It did her heart good to see Lydia taking the time to enjoy life.  She knew the verse could be cruel at times, but life was what you made of it and sharing laughter was one of the those things that Makani treasured.

"I think where Mulan goes is entirely up to her," she answered.

She paused, studying Lydia and Mulan for a minute.  "But there's no rule against trying to bribe her...."

Stacey shook his head with a scowl as Jin joined him and Cole.
Deliberatly he looked away from the vidscreen that ligered gratuitously on how the alliance dealt with 'terrorists'. What they didn't need right now was some drunken fool to notice the group's apparent sympathy with the tattoed woman on screen.

"She swore yesterday those tendancies were something she would leave behind.". Stacey could guess now what had been in the bag she left the Dragon with just hours before - the explosives they had been trying to discard for her.
"I don't think Im in the mood for another drink. Though this changes nothing about tommorrow, we still have the crew Rooney needs.".

He shook his head again.

Although they had only known Kinny two days, the crew had already started to think of her as one of them.  And yet, it appeared that they knew nothing about her.

There's never an easy way to do it, but Stacey discreetly notified the other crewmembers that evening, starting with those in the bar and restaurant, then those who had retired to their rooms.  By the time he turned in, everyone had been told.  He felt no need to notify Burne and Frank...they never knew her anyway.  Kinny's death cast a pall over the crew, and it meant that they'd be heading out without a doctor, but hopefully they wouldn't need one.  Stacey knew that a night's sleep, and the anticipation of finally joining up with their ship, would overcome any sense of loss.  Tomorrow was another day...and a new start.

What could go wrong?
