Re: Chapter 4: And a Good Time Was Had By...Some.
While the debriefing continued in the Captain's cabin, in the cockpit, a light labelled "Broadwave Traffic Indicator" on the communications panel began to blink, indicating that the ship's comm system was being accessed to broadwave outgoing communications traffic from somewhere within the ship.  Simultaneously, a recorder automatically activated, recording the content of the outgoing wave.  After only a few seconds, the wave ended, the recorder stopped, and a different light (labelled "Recorded Messages") on the console activated, blinking forlornly as if lamenting the fact that the transmission had terminated and trying to draw someone's attention to the stored recording of the wave.

Five minutes later, the process was repeated...only this time the wave was incoming.  The ship's comm system was merely used to receive and boost the signal, then pass it on to a receiver somewhere in the ship.  As before, the wave was recorded, and as before, it lasted but a few seconds.  Under the blinking "Recorded Messages" light, a red digital numeral "1" changed to "2".

The light would blink until someone acknowledged and turned it off.

Re: Chapter 4: And a Good Time Was Had By...Some.
(Captain's Cabin)

Stacey supressed a frown as he listened to Jin.
"Planetside security in places like this can be rough sometimes. Some say they have to be, else rocks like this end up with no law at all. But still...".
He thought for a moment.
"Look, tonight we get a good night sleep. We still have a job to do here - that hasnt changed. But in the morning I want us to head into town and have a gentle dig around. Maybe we'll findourselves some work, maybe we'll understand this place better. Im open to suggestions people, but I say we keep cool about things a while longer.".

He glanced at Cole. The runner comment still had him concerned.

"I've been scanning the local frequencies to see what I can pick up.  If I hear anything about jobs it might give us a place to start in the morning."  She offered.  A tinge of embarassment coloured her thoughts, maybe she should have checked with him before starting the scan but initiative could be valuable out in the Black and she couldn't be running to the captain with every idea or problem that came her way.

(Captains Cabin)

Burne wondered when Jin had time to do that with the preparations for tonight.

"If that's all then, I still have to get my suit put up."  Burne got up, said her goodbyes and headed for the door.  "I need to check on the Goblin circuit here anyway, so I have to go into town on the morrow.  I'll let you know if I find anything."

Cole kept silent as the meeting wound down.  He had only heard the name runner and was not sure what exactly it meant.  He wanted to speak with Stacey alone for now.

Stacey nodded, approving Jin's independant thinking. "Let me know if you pick anything up.".
As the group seemed to have said their peices the Captain stood and stretched.
"Very well, I think we are done here for now. Lets all get a good night sleep; the facts are we've done the first night of the job we're paid to do and it went smoothly. In the morning we'll visit town and get a feel for this rock.".
He glanced at the clock.
"Anyone wanting to hit town be ready to depart at 10.30am. Frank, I'd like at least you to stay with the ship, but if you need anything fetching then let myself or Burne know.".

"Good night folks.".

(Captains Cabin)

"Sounds good."  She said a good night to the gathered folk, and left.

(Cockpit)

Burne headed back to the front, and slid open the cockpit door to retrieve her riding suit she had haphazardly tossed there before the meeting.   She was grabbing it off the back of her chair when the message indicator caught her eye.

"Kinda late for messages to be coming in."  She closed the cockpit door for privacy, and sat down in her chair before pulling out the keyboard.  Neither of the messages were tagged as secure for any particular person, and there were no locks in place.

"OK.  Let's see what's so urgent."  She tapped the screen and played the first message, then the second one.

Jin smiled faintly, glad that she wasn't being immediately chewed out for running scans...of course, she hadn't gone into detail either.  She would have to do some checks for definite jobs tomorrow.  "In which case, I'm going to call it a night."  She turned to leave with a wave to those still assembled.  "Sleep well all."

(Jin's Cabin)

Back in her own space and with the door firmly closed behind her, Jin turned first to her terminal to see what had come up during the minutes she had been away.

Jin reviewed the wireless traffic on the common frequencies that had been received during the time that they had been in Stacey's cabin, but only heard routine chit-chat and routine business waves.

(Cockpit)

Burne tapped the vid screen to playback the outgoing messages that had been recorded during the meeting in Stacey's cabin, sitting back to make herself comfortable.  Unfortunately, after the initial general informational screen showing time of transmission, addressee (if any), etc., the screen only showed snowy static, and there was a slight trilling sound that emanated from the speaker.  After less than five seconds, the static stopped, as did the trilling, and a standard message appeared on the screen..."End of Message".  The second message was virtually identical to the first.  After the second message ended, the screen displayed..."No Further Messages".

Re: Chapter 4: And a Good Time Was Had By...Some.
(Cockpit)

Burne looked up at the stars through the Duck's forward window.   It was more than mere pinpoints of light.  She was looking back in time.  That was the nature of things traveling at the speed of light from so far away, one could travel through time.  Like a memory taking us back.

And Burne had many memories.   Some of them were from the recently ended war, and her part in it.  Coded messages, and static to cover them was necessary.   The Duck's controls were crude, they were little more than what was necessary.  She glanced over at where certain more high-tech controls had been removed.  The type of thing that would have made solving the riddle of this sound more probable.

She tapped in a code, and locked both the messages so that only she could access them for now.   She wasn't the only one on the ship, and she could think of someone who she was already getting to think of on friendly terms, Jin.   That woman might be someone to help.

Burne left the cockpit, sealing the door behind her and headed to Jin's cabin.

(Outside Jin's Cabin)

Burne knocked on the door.  Right now she felt jazzed up, as if the hour didn't matter.  She paused only for a few seconds, and then knocked again as her mind pushed her body to action, rather than patience.

She was considering a third knock.

Re: Chapter 4: And a Good Time Was Had By...Some.
(Captain's Cabin)

Stacey nodded a polite goodnight as the crew filtered from his cabin. Despite the fact things had gone well so far, there was that nagging feeling something wasn't quite right. Yet despite that doubt, they had to be professional. They weren't in a position to make the cruel beating of a criminal into a big issue, no matter how unsavoury it felt. Besides, it was a one off surely. A few hours dirtside would give the crew an outlet to their tensions, and soon enough they would pocket the money from the mission and things would feel better all round.
Better this than a trip to Miranda.

Re: Chapter 4: And a Good Time Was Had By...Some.
(Jin's Cabin)

Jin frowned at her door, half tempted to ignore the knocking and fall into bed.  Her scans had yielded nothing of any particular interest and the long day was definitely catching up with her now.  There seemed to be an urgency to the sound though, or at least an impatience - whoever was out there wasn't going to give up and she wasn't going to get any sleep unless they did.

Scrubbing her hands through her hair she tried to at least look awake as she opened the door to Burne.  "Hey, come in."  She blinked at the other woman but stood aside to let her in, intending to at least get to sit down.

(Jin's Cabin)

Burne accepted Jin's offer and glanced around admiring the womans tech.   "That's nice," she said admiring the console with it's well worn keys.  "It might come in handy too."

"About that... Handy I mean.  I caught a bit of something on the incoming wave's and I wondered if you wanted to come up and have a look at it on the bridge.  It's probably nothing, mind you."

Burne reminded herself that this woman was a civilian.  "I figured you would still be awake since the captains meeting only just let out.  I guess it could have waited till morning.  I could come back if you prefer."

"It's fine, if it has got you so worked up then it's something interesting."  She smiled.  "Although I don't promise a coherent answer tonight."  Jin stood up again, running her hand through her hair once more to try and coax it into a little more order.

"Worked up?"   Burne's eyebrow raised in confusement.  "No.  It's more of a matter of interest.   I forgot that it might not be as interesting to you, given our different backgrounds.   As a fellow person who loves technology, it could have been something we could do together."

"Tell you what.  I'll come by tomorrow, and we can look at it in the morning if you like.  That way you and I are both fresh to look at it."

(Jin's Cabin)

"No, let's go take a look now."  She flashed a quick smile.  "My body has just been figuring out that it's been a pretty long day and is starting to complain to me."  Jin took a moment to tap a couple of buttons on her terminal and close down the things she had been working on then headed for the door, holding the slide open for Burne to leave first.

She covered a yawn.  "So what is it?  You said there was a wave?"

"Indeed.  I saved it, and can show it to you.  Though if you are tired, and incoherent, it would probably be better to do it in the morning."

Burne backed out of the tight quarters.  "Are you sure you want to do it now?"

"If you're sure.  First planet stop after being in the Black, it throws everything off a bit."  Another yawn is stifled as she explains.  "I'll be up pretty early though."  She thought for a moment, "Can grab a couple of coffees and head up there first thing if you like."

Burne gave her a smile before heading back to her own quarters near the cockpit.

Cole watched as everyone left.  His mind was trying to figure out what could have happened that night.  He did not have all the facts.  He needed to not get so worked up before getting all the facts.

As the last member of the crew left, Cole stood and shut the door.  He then turned back to Stacey and took a deep breath.

"Somethin' ain't right, Cap'n," he said.  He took his seat again.  "I ain't no expert or nuthin', but runner typically means on thing.  Someone trying to escape.  Either the man really is a criminal or he's being kept against his will.  But then again, I might be way off."

Re: Chapter 4: And a Good Time Was Had By...Some.
(Captain's Cabin)

Stacey turned back to his cabin with interest as his first mate lingered. While Cole closed the door the Captain moved to a draw in his desk, extracting a bottle of amber liquid and pair of worn glasses. The whiskey gurgled lazily into the scratched glasses and before Cole spoke Stacey offered the drink to his companion. "Go on.", he ushered as Jackson began to speak.

"A runner? I didn't realise they had used that term. Strange.". Concentrating on his glass Stacey waved a hand to dismiss Cole's hesitancy. "You know your stuff Cole, I doubt you'll ever be way off. Im glad you brought it up. Something sounds outta place. Tang's entertainment should have been something folk were eager for. Why on earth would there be a runner from that?". For a moment he mused on the delights of Tang's girls, drinking to Cat's form with a smile. "I wonder...".
"Maybe it was just a one off. Maybe some stowaway and Corone did us all a favour. But lets assume for a moment there is a real reason why folk would want to 'run' from here. What if we give them a place to run to tommorrow night? Deliberatly leave access to the Duck unwatched and see what creeps upstairs to our welcoming party?".

Cole took the drink and swallowed it in a short gulp before he gave his opinion.  As Stacey responded, Cole raised his eyebrows.  Let someone not a crew member or passenger onboard?  For once in his life, Cole actually thought it was a good idea.

"We can do that," Cole said.  "But I don't know about unwatched.  I found out that we got a gal that ain't half bad at staying to the shadows.  And she might be the right person to figure out if I need to welcome him to the galley or a secure room."

Re: Chapter 4: And a Good Time Was Had By...Some.
Stacey nodded.
"Agreed; not unwatched as such, but discreet enough so any 'runner' at least thinks they are hidden.".
"There are a finite number of places to hide on the Duck. I figure by locking the right doors or placing folk in the right positions, we can channel any runner somewhere we want them. Maybe Jin has a few cameras she can place, or like you say, our Lydia might be able to help out.".
He offered a wry shrug.
"Of course, the liklihood is there will be no runner. Corone may be heavy handed, but they probably did us a favour tonight. A walk about town tommorrow will give us a better feel for things.".

Re: Chapter 4: And a Good Time Was Had By...Some.
With plans being made on several fronts, the night closed in on The Ugly Duck.  The external lighting that had been installed around the patio area blinked out as someone inside cut the electricity flowing to them, leaving only a few of the ship's navigation lights to provide dim illumination to the area.  Silence engulfed the ship, interrupted only by distant sounds from the town, and the occasional tapping of hanging Chinese lamps against one another or a support pole around the patio.
