Part 20 - Distress

Kourene request that the group sit tight on their information concerning the mole.  He'd like them to be debriefed before several of his senior officers, just in case any of them have questions.  And he needs to rest for a while...

The Bantha drops out of hyperspace some time later, emerging at Cadruc amid a cloud of small debris, carried with it through the jump.  Jalt immediately starts the calculations for travel to Mothessh.

Those calculations are interrupted, though, as an alarm sounds throughout the ship.

"I don't like the sound of that."  The pilot studies some instruments, then, "We're picking up a distress beacon.  Automated, so no telling how long its been out here.  It's broadcasting a set of coordinates in this system and, by my estimate, going there would add an hour onto the time before we can move on to Mothessh.  Plus however long it takes us to deal with the situation."

Part 20 - Distress

Rhijans grunted softly.  "Might be worth taking the time here, anyway.  There's always a chance the Empire planted some kind of tracking device on here...not that they necessarily expected us to get loose, but if they were suspicious of you, they could always ask a few questions and then let you go to make it look like they'd decided to clear you...and then follow you around and see if you led them anywhere suspicious."

He jerked his head toward the medical bay.  "Shard and Juragga detained the Imperial tech...could be worth asking him a few questions about what he was doing on board..."

"Seconded," Shard agrees, leaning in the cabin doorway (though ready to move if others wish entry).  "For starters, I don't like ignoring beacons.  Automated doesn't mean there isn't someone in trouble.  Secondly...Rhijans makes a good point."  Not surprising, that.  "That's the kind of thing that would be smart to do, and we can't assume the Empire is stupid.  We need to check the ship thoroughly and query that tech."

She grimaces.  "I can get the information out of him.  Painlessly.  Might take a bit, is all."  Void knows how Rhijans is going to take that, but it's what she has to offer.  "I'd like Haarmon's help with it, is all, unless he'd be better suited to hunting down tracking devices."  Another grimace; Haarmon probably is, at that.

Third grimace.  "Though honestly?  I'll be happy when we can get off the ship.  No offence meant, Jalt - this ship has saved our behinds more than once.  It's just that the Bantha is in dire need of a cleaning after Haarmon's 'distraction'."

Part 20 - Distress

Rhijans let a trace of a smile play across his face.  Actually, I have an idea for starting with the questions that I'd like to try."  His tone was, if anything outside of it's normal, flat tone, colored with a hint of humor...if he found things humorous.

"If it works, it will save you a lot of time.  If it doesn't work, it won't cost you more than a few moments and you can proceed as you would have."  He gave a grimace of his own and added, "And, no, it doesn't include inflicting pain on him.  Although...If we decide to go that route, I think we've got a good option available..."  His gaze flickered in the direction of You-Why.

Kourene nods, "Use whatever you've got to get information from the tech.  It could save a lot of lives."

"No offence taken." Jalt says, absently, his attention apparently on his instruments.

Finally he looks away from them.  "It could be a trap.  Pirates sometimes use automated distress beacons as lures.  Imperials too.  Ship picks up the beacon, broadcasts a message to say, hang on, we're coming.  Gets to the beacon, and finds pirates or Imperials laying in wait nearby with their emissions screened."

"Just making sure we all know what we're maybe getting into."

Part 20 - Distress

"Some fear will help," Shard states quietly. "If I can get him to focus on the answers, it makes it easier." A glance at You-Why of her own, and she nods in agreement.  "Not that we'll carry through with anything."  It probably doesn't need to be said, but the older woman enjoys clarity.

"You got it, Colonel."

Her attention slides back to Jalt. "I see the problem." Pursing her lips, she starts to pace.  "We could ask the tech," Shard slowly muses.  "But I'm guessing a technician wouldn't have information of Imperial traps in this area.  I'm for risking it, but really, really carefully."

Rhijans nodded, and walked into the medical area, appearing perhaps more wraith-like with the dark gray of his skin scarcely offset by the black bodysuit he had yet to remove from the stormtrooper uniform.  He walked over to the tech, his gaze calculating.  "The lady with the lightsaber is going to come ask you a few questions.  Yiu've seen, she knows how to use it...I assume you know what that means.  I wouldn't lie to her, if I were you...she'll know."

He gave a pained grimace, and added, "If she feels you're being less than honest, things could get...unpleasant."

Without waiting for the reaction, he turned and walked back out.  "He's all yours," he said to Shard.  "I'm hoping he knows more about Nimadda than Jedi...if he does, he should be pretty scared right now...and ready to answer anything you ask."

Part 20 - Distress

The tech winces as Rhijans warns him about Shard's intention to question him.

"I don't know anything, really.  I was pulled in by the stormtroopers to run some basic scans on this ship.  Nobody told me why, or what I was looking for.  Just that I had to run a full set of standard scans."

Part 20 - Distress

Haarmon was personally of the opinion that, having escaped the inescapable dungeon with the one person they were looking for who couldn't possibly have been there in the first place, with no injuries and no deaths and everyone feeling pretty good about things, they should hang the distress beacon and punch it for home. Quick-quick, like.

But he was starting to get too tired to argue, and he figured the ops guys had a better handle on all this than he did anyway.

And then they started in with the tech. He knew Shard wasn't going to let things get too far, but all the same he had no stomach for the process.

So he figured he'd start looking for tracking beacons. Terminal first. Floor sweep after.

Part 20 - Distress

Frowning, Shard trundles after Haarmon as he leaves the area.  "Haarmon, if you have a moment, I'd like you to join me in the medical area." Leaning forward, she lowers her voice. "Student."

Without waiting for reply, the older woman marches back toward where their tech is currently cloistered, passing Rhijans as he exits.  Her eyebrow rises. "It should help," Shard replies.  "And You-Why probably would have given him heart failure.  Thanks."

That said, she walks into the room and moves to the chair holding their captive.  Coming in on the tail of his reply to Rhijans - no doubt called out toward the man's back as he left - she cocks an eyebrow. "Scans, is it?"  Grabbing a chair of her own, she glances at the door to see if Haarmon has followed.

Then she focuses her eyes on the tech again.

"So, these scans.  What were they for?  Did you find anything you were to report before we interrupted you?"

OOC - Haarmon, I left it open-ended whether or not you followed. ^_^

Part 20 - Distress

Haarmon paused when Shard addressed him directly, and then stopped dead in his tracks when she said the S-Word. He sighed. Bit his lip a little and clenched his hands. He had a few quick, feathery, unkind thoughts about the unfair playing of the Mentor Card when it wasn't really applicable.

But he let them pass. Shard wouldn't call him student unless she had something to teach. And he had asked for this, hadn't he?

So he turned and followed her into the medical bay.

Part 20 - Distress

The tech looks distinctly nervous, even before Shard starts asking him questions.

When the interrogation actually starts, and there are two people facing him, all he can do is stammer out the answers, his mouth so dry that his tongue feels like it will crack...

"J-just the usual sc-scans.  Ch-checking for b-booby traps, ex-explosive d-d-devices.  C-contraband.  Search the nav c-computer for c-course information."

A-a-and y-yes.  I w-was t-told to g-give all results t-to the st-stormtrooper commander f-for him to l-look over.  W-wasn't ordered t-to look for anything - ah - s-specific... j-just d-do a f-full set of scans and r-report all results.  P-positive or n-negative."

And he can't seem to stop once he starts.

"It-it-it's Lady N-nimadda, s-see?  V-very thorough.  H-hates if w-we m-miss something."

Speaking of distress, Juragga emerged from the Lav after far too long.  He moaned and clutched his stomach, then ambled to an acceleration couch and sat shakily.

Shard glances up at Haarmon as the (Imperial) tech stammers his way through the explanation.  She studies him for a long moment.  "If you can," she quietly states when there's a break, "quiet yourself.  Open up.  Find corroboration for his words, same way you heard me before."  If he can't?  Well, that's part of learning as well and she'll give him the long explanation later.

Back to the tech.  "All right.  I believe you.  Did you have the chance to report anything?  That's my first question, and don't get cocky - when I say I believe you, there are reasons why.  Start lying, I'll know."  Leaning forward, she cocks an eyebrow. "And the next question after that one: I want to know what kind of gossip is running around your ship about the Rebels in this sector.  If you tell me the truth, I won't be angry, even if it's unflattering."

Distantly, she hears Juragga's groan and shudders.

"N-not yet."  He shakes his head, "Hadn't fini-finished the scans y-yet.  S-some w-were done, and d-data w-was being c-compiled.  C-collated.  Others... just st-started."

Shards second question brings a curious look, followed by a sneer.  When he speaks again, he seems calmer.  "We're winning.  That's what they're saying.  You rebels have nothing.  You're short on supplies, personnel, and equipment.  You're demoralised and on the run, and you haven't won a single significant victory."

"And soon you'll all be dead or captured.  We have a prisoner, and when Lady Nimadda questions him, she will know everywhere that you're operating from."

Rhijans smiled grimly, teeth barely showing, as he listened outside the medical area.  He pondered the reactions the tech would have if he learned that the vaunted Imperial forces had managed to have their prized prisoner snatched out of their own detention area by a mismatched band of misfit Rebels.

He looked over at Kourene, silent, but with the dark humor apparent in his glittering eyes.

Part 20 - Distress

Haarmon didn't really want to even be in this room, and he certainly didn't want to make the sort of intimate connection with a stranger (let alone this stranger) that he made with Shard before. Would it be the same? What would his thoughts sound like? What would his emotions feel like?

He shuddered.

But. Student. Mentor. Doing as he was told. This wasn't exactly rousing montage material, but all the same, he took a breath and closed his eyes and tried to touch that whatever it was that was out there.

And reached through it toward the tech.
