Everyone, I should have specified your TN is 5.

Trask's thermal gave no benefit but that's ok.

"Cannibal" Jack rolls a 7 on 3d8, for search. rerolling max with 7,5,7

A 7 ... not a fail thru the scope of seeking.

Re: Die Roll, Card and Chip Draws/Awards II
In reply to Peter Firecrow (msg # 246):

Looking at it again, I whiffed on the enemy's Sneak check so the TN was only 4. So Brother Edgar actually passed!

From the House Rules thread:

Ambush: to detect an ambush, roll a Search check with the TN being the result of the Sneak check. If you pass, check Cognition vs. TN5 to avoid being surprised. If your Search check failed roll Cognition vs. TN11 to avoid surprise.

Peter failed his Search check. Therefore he may make a TN11 Cognition check to avoid being surprised.

One question is how can you be "surprised" if you are the ones initiating combat or otherwise know its going to occur? I have a great real-life example, related to me by a former US marine NCO, Herman, who fought in Viet Nam, and who we met while in Nha Trang on vacation. He said his patrol (with attached MG team) was crossing under a road using a shallow ditch through a culvert when an entire VC company broke out of the forest, coming down that road towards them. His squad was only halfway across and it became obvious they were screwed. He ordered his men to wait but when he gave the command to fire the MG team on the other side of the culvert did not open up. He crawled through the culvert to see what the problem was but the only thing was they were afraid to open up because then the VC would target the MG as it was the heaviest weapon, which was true. In a wargame the MG team would of course open fire without hesitation when ordered because we know about its firepower but the humans actually manning it had other priorities in the heat of the moment dictated by their fear and being intimidated.

In this situation Peter is a hardened Waster and much more capable than some conscripts in Viet Nam, even US marines. So he's probably just surprised and distracted.

Any ways time is tight these couple days but I'll try and get a post up soon. For that matter, everyone go ahead and make Fear checks. This is a Guts roll, modified by Edges like Brave (+2) and Grit. It's that kind of situation!

Thanks,

Tony

In reply to Peter Firecrow (msg # 259):

Suddenly, a flurry of movement from the reeds across the ford to the right broke the stillness of the vine-festooned forest. But it was just a marsh bird taking flight. As their attention was distracted, from the direction of the bridge to their left there was an explosion of spray as a massive dark shape surged out of the frothing brown water. Whatever it was it was huge, dark, armoured and prehistoric. Teeth gaped as the mouth opened as it lunged towards them, tail lashing!

It was a mutant swamp gator, mutated and primordial. Grown to at least twice the normal size! It wasn't all in sight due to the churning water but in the glimpse they got it was probably thirty feet from snout to tail tip. And it was lunging for Marcela as she was the closest to it, at the water's edge checking out the ford.

Marshall's Note: Everyone but Peter may make Quickness checks. (Sorry, I should have asked for all rolls at once!) The TN for the terror check was 3 so I think everyone passed? Make posts on your actions in that case.

The ford is to the right of the remains of the bridge, and so the gator is attacking from your left. Range to the gator is 6 yards for those in the Humvee, 12 for those in the technical, and 20 for those in the rig.

I am not sure if anyone is out of their vehicles with Marcela to cover her. Way to go guys, let the NPC take the dangerous action alone! Let's hope it doesn't end up costing you.

In reply to Smoker Nix (msg # 260):

Sounds good. That's 1 Action and he gets 2. Is the other sleeved (held) or used to aim first?

The gator is Size 12(!) and is +5 to hit. Smoker's range to target is 30 yards, so that's a -2 range penalty on single and -3 on full-auto.

I entered the FN's data in your character sheet. I would set the "fun switch" to "rock-and-roll", this sucker is HUGE! Anything less than an anti-tank round might just piss it off.

Thanks,

Tony

PS: for new players, I'm Canadian so when I say "FN" I mean Smoker's FN FAL rifle.
