Sort of a toughie! The undead are just climbing out of the vats now. aiming to toss the grenade outside may not affect them until they climb out. But inside might sprat toxic sludge everywhere!

I imagined the vats are 6 feet high. Otherwise if they were flush with the floor they would be called "pits".
