Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Aki was rather concerned with Daedalus in armor, but given that Minotaur was more relaxed, Aki sighed and walked in, hoping things went well.

I went into the girl's bathroom..., Karl kept telling himself as he headed to the meeting. Even if the punishment he was bound to receive wasn't severe bringing up the event was gonna be embarrassing.

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Riel was there.  Like the others, she was nervous.

Being called to a meeting--any meeting--without being told why usually meant bad news.  Like, "We've noticed your grades have fallen, you're being held back a year." or "Sorry to tell you, but you didn't make the team." or even "No, you can't see your mother.  She'd not here anymore.  She died this morning, and the word 'cancer' was used."

So, of course, she was nervous.  Given what was going on with Brittney, and the steps she'd taken, the lie she'd so glibly given.... she had a right to be nervous.  But Riel reminded herself that most everyone was self-centered at heart.  Lies often served more than one purpose.  It provided graceful stories for awkward actions and perserved social decorum when all decorum would be lost.    In that, she wasn't alone.  Everybody lied.

And there were others in the hall.  A school like this... They'd be careful about allegations of wrongdoing.  And they wouldn't discipline a student in front of the others.  That would be positively Victorian.  So, Riel gained a certain level of confidence that this wasn't about her.

"Hey." Riel stepped up beside Aki, her eyes flicking to Chuck and back, before he could notice.  "You know anything 'bout this?"

Aki shook her head at Riel.  "Nope.  It doesn't look too bad, given Minotaur-san being relaxed."

"Hm.  Good point." Riel nodded.  "So, maybe the roast turkey incident isn't really as big an issue as I thought it was...."

In reply to Riel Hahn (msg #4):

Chuck looked odd today. Well, odder than usual. He seemed to be typing in mid-air...expect nothing was seen. It was like he was deep in thought, moving invisible things across an unseen chalkboard. Lining things up so they made sense to him...maybe just him.

However, when Riel's eyes flicker towards him, a second later he freezes. As if realizing he was not alone, and glanced back at her. Then his ears redden, and he forces his hands down at his sides. "Crap! Crap crap crap..." He muttered quietly.

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Joseph was a little late in, and every step he took was answered with a quiet, wet squish. His hair was matted with pool water, and his clothes were wrinkly and dripping. In all, it looked like he had been pulled into the outdoor pool. And he was.

He looked to the others, smiled, and nodded, before turning his attention back to Minotaur and Daedalus.

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Karl half-way listened to Riel and Aki, thinking about how Minotaur's mood might be 'relaxed' if the meeting way about pointing out rules like "stay out of the girl's bathroom." He himself was relaxing slightly- this hardly seemed the kinda of rigamarole men like these got together to chide some slip of judgement.

Once seeing Joseph though, Karl nearly lost it. It was like some corny comedy or sitcom, the way the swordsman came marching in- the sounds of his soaked footfalls exaggerating themselves in Karl's ear. He gave a smile- a burst of air- not quite a giggle or gasp- escaping him before he put his hand to his face and looked down... It would be hard to get that sight out of his mind.

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Elise scuttled in quickly, and settled into a seat, looking as poised as she could ever manage (not very).  If Daedalus had something to say, she was ready to listen.

It really never occurred to her that it might have something to do with English class.

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
After waiting for a few more stragglers to show up (oddly, not including Brittney), Daedalus nodded to Minotaur, who walked to the back of the room and stood watch over the proceedings.

"Thank you all for showing up. We've done an exhaustive sweep of the school, and found no other rogue technologies. We suspect we know where this piece came from, and we're working on confirming it. Understand that at no time were any of you under specific danger from what happened."

Those keeping an eye on Minotaur would notice him shaking his head in disbelief at how clinical and business-like Daedalus was being to the students.

If Daedalus noticed, he paid no attention to it. "I want to say, however, that you all did exactly what we would hope you would do; you did not panic, you looked after your class-mates, you figured out what the problem was, and acted upon it. You should be proud of what you've done."

Again, the slight head-shake from Minotaur. This time, Daedalus didn't gloss it over. "Would you like to say something?"

The normally-adverse to public speaking Minotaur raised a hand as if to defer, then stopped, "Yes, actually, I would. If you don't mind."

Daedalus looked for a moment like he hadn't expected the reaction, then shrugged, "Please, go ahead."

Minotaur strode to the front of the room and took the podium as Daedalus stepped aside.

"You guys did well," he said, "Well enough that... Daedalus and I have discussed a few things. I don't dance around an issue much, so here it is. The Freedom League has a problem, and we'd like to ask you students to help."

Aki's only response was a tilt of her head.  She wasn't going to be much help in whatever it was...at least compared to what she used to be able to do.

"Really?" He said in a shocked tone. He was already in a bit of awe of Daedalus, the high tech member of the League. Now he was asking for help? What could a bunch of students do for them?

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Karl did not move, nor could he speak. While it was an honor to have the world's greatest heroes reach out for their help, Karl was not fooled by visions of glamor. He had seen many movies, watched fights and wars unfold on the big screen and witnessed the great heroic deeds through media. But at least once a week for some time now Karl seen truth. There were no handsome actors striking poses- there was no happy endings where everything tied itself up nice and neat. Although many would find it hard to swallow- Karl had witnessed stark unadulterated violence and death in those dreams.

And he knew, somehow, that they were not just dreams- but memories.

Those memories that echo in the soul of a boy-not nearly a man- also helped form instincts within him... warrior instincts. And after the horrors that he has seen he has played a part in, he realizes that he must fight the good fight to atone. Maybe he can wash the sins of these dreams away, maybe he can make them stop.

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Riel seemed vaguely confused.  The Freedom League needed their help?  What was that about?    Pep talk to make them feel useful?

Or perhaps someone was going to get a coveted job as a  perky assistant or Gofer for the Freedom League.

What could they possibly  offer the Freedom League that the League didn't already have?

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Minotaur chuckled. "Yes. Really."
Looking over his shoulder, he then received a nod-go-ahead-you've-said-this-much-so-far from Daedalus. He then turned back to the students in the room.
"I'll give you the basics. There's a gang of sorts... Well, more than a gang. It seems like some organization that exists throughout the entirety of Freedom City. Criminals, dealing in theft and some casual, yet likely metahuman-level, violence. Normally, this sort of thing would be something D or Johnny or maybe Raven would take care of. Problem is... It's all kids your age. They're also clever as hell, and seem to be able to see any of us coming a mile off. After your discretion today and your good work, I've convinced D that you guys might be more able to infiltrate the organization and find out just who the hell can coordinate such a large organization... Maybe even do something about it, depending on what you find."

Joseph felt like he was going to faint. In fact, he did stagger a little. This was all just too much. A chance to work on a case like this! For guys like the Freedom League! It was a very high honour, and a cause that would do his ancestors proud.

"Sir, where exactly would we find them if they seem to keep staying a step ahead of us?" he asked.

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
"I think he means that they were ready for the League's approach... and the fact that they're such big names- they clear out when the big guns poke their heads around.", Karl responded to Joseph. It had begun. He was their soldier now- and one thing was certain to him. If they succeeded, if they did well this would not be a one time affair.

One does not simply discard a tool once used- but merely set it aside for later use. he could not recall where he had heard this, but he felt the truth of it now as he set himself along this path. Memories moved within him- fire and pain as the life of another flashed before him. Gun metal pressed against his hand, a more modern life than he would usually draw up.

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
In reply to All-seeing Eye (msg #16):

"Well, I can research the gang in question. However, I really doubt I can infiltrate anything..." Mostly that would be due to the fact Chuck was not that comfortable around people, expect for Riel. Even before being bonded to the suit, he was awkward in high school. All his so-called 'friends' where all online. That is where he felt safest, and also why he ended up being connected to the suit.

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Riel nodded, pushing down the pride she felt.  It was unwarranted.

"Given our display at the nightclub a few weeks ago..." Riel pursed her lisp, thinking. "There's some credibility to it.  And with the spook-factor Elise and Aki can give it, we could present ourselves as a serious edge.  Depending what they're into."

Riel glanced at Chuck and Marcus.  "You think Angel and his goons would make a good wntrance-vector?"  Truthfully, she hoped not.  The idea of the empath scared her silly.  The more-so because she wasn't even aware of his presence.  maybe he hadn't actually done anything to her.  That was the problem with telepaths and empaths.  You could never tell if tehy were in your head if they didn't want you to know...

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
In reply to Riel Hahn (msg #20):

Chuck shrugged and looked at Riel. "I could...ummm...research Angel's gang for possible connections. Given his criminal past, the police and FBI may have a lot on him. Not to mention known his known superhuman connections. I am sure there is a file on him somewhere I can get.

But actually finding out information from him...I don't think I would get very far. And without some sort of Psi shielding-I don't want you going anywhere near him."

His face goes pale. "Er, I mean, I don't want ANY of us going near him." His ears turn red, and he suddenly examines the floor.

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Karl looked from Tinman to Riel, "Not sure who this Angel is, but I might be able to pry some things from his head... I'm good with digging out memories, and I'm told I have a pretty good defense against psi. Do we have this guy- or do we have to go find him?", it made sense to Karl. Messing with someone at a nightclub could help give them a name out there... and serve to dig up some information if there was anything to find in this 'Angel'. This avenue could work from multiple angles, although he wasn't sure why Tinman was resisting the idea- although he was beginning to suspect that the guy's considerations of Riel extended to more than classmate.

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Daedalus listened to the students for a few moments, a hint of a smile playing at his face as they seemed to be coming up with a plan. He then took the podium and spoke again, "Karl is correct in his assumptions. The League is too well-known, too easy to track. You are not. You're also of the right age range to get into this. As for this 'Angel', I don't know. I will, however, funnel any information the League has to you."
He then took a deep breath, "This is, I will admit, against my immediate judgment. I don't like sending you into danger. This being said, I agree with Minotaur's notion that you may be our best option. Because of this, you will be given temporary access to certain Freedom League resources, including our level-2 archives and communication equipment. Minotaur will be your contact point for the entirety of the operation. If you have any initial questions, we can address them now."

Re: Scene 4.1: The meeting
Karl remained locked in thought for a few more beats before turning to Riel, "Who is this 'Angel', and can we get to him? Even if he doesn't have the knowledge we need we could use a strike on him to give ourselves a little more exposure. Problem being we're gonna have to sell ourselves right off the bat- make it a show and make it known we're out to make a name for ourselves as bad-apples. We wanna look like new talent for hired thugs- not the goodie two-shoes new kids on the block.", anyone who had talked with Karl knew this wasn't the artsy kid with charcoal and colored pencils that they knew. He had spilled the beans to a few of them, and anyone who had heard what it was he did could tell Karl Grimmson was speaking with someone elses voice.

"We should probably have our flashiest on scene for the tussle... and I think it'd be best if I went in quietly at first... keep watch- gauge their response since I'm not known to them...", he looked around, thinking as he seen them. You could tell then that he realized that he wasn't quite sure what those around him were capable of, "anyone else who hasn't went head to head with this fella and his buddies?"

Joseph scratched his cheek, a bit flustered. "Yeah, if we're talking the same guy, I think I might not be best suited for the actual infiltration. I could certainly do backup for you. And if you need someone to investigate matters while you're busy distracting them, you can count on me."

"Well we should be..." He began to say, but then stopped. "Ummm, did you mean access to the Freedom League lab? Fu...full, access?" He stumbled over the question, being as overwhelmed as he was. He remembered being very young and talking to his friends about seeing all the things inside Freedom League HQ.
