Yes, you can hear Jin casting a spell.  You probably don't need a check to know he is somewhere north of you.

This was note to GM:
Ready Action: If spell is being cast Melvin will pre-empt, activating his corsairs patch and attacking with his Energy bolt Power Stone.
 Since he can't see, the only way he can pre-empt is if he can hear the casting...
