Whoa, wait a sec. That was my AoO, not my regular move. Monster doesn't get to attack again until I've expended my regular move.

In that case, you can't drop your rod as a free action before the AoO.  You can only take immediate actions on another's turn.

OOC: Then my AoO would be either with my spiked shield or my spiked armor. The result is the same... no damage to the creature, and it lets me know there is nothing solid to strike at. If I quick-cast a spell, do I need a Concentration check?

No.  The electrical damage is listed in the actions, but your resistance eliminates it in the "Damage Dealt" section.

If you look at the math, you only took 11 damage in the turn.
