Johnny groans as he sees his foe enter the arena. Although he can't quite identify what it is, something looking like that is bound to be quite the flyer. Swiftly pulling out a potion as he jogs to the center pillar, he washes the magical liquid down his rather patchy throat. "I sure hope this damn thing's gonna give me enough money to cover alla' this. I don't even think it's edible..."

As his foe swiftly rounds the corner, and its true form is fully made visible, Johnny sighs yet again. He closes his eyes, and steps in, swinging wildly at the illusion-clad foe. While his vicious claws and teeth meet only air, he manages to close his rigid hand around... something, he doesn't want to think about it too hard, and attempts to close in with the creature, and impale it on his spiked vest.

The creature must make an opposed grapple check vs. DC 32 or be grappled and take 6 damage, then must make an opposed grapple check vs. DC 28 or take 10 damage. No attack of opportunity.

The creature is unable to resist the grapple, but doesn't appear harmed by the assault. Rather than engage in futile resistance, it becomes a whirlwind (I have no idea what this does other than change what abilities it can use. Technically I think you can still grapple it, weird as that is).

Taking all the hits, the whirlwind took far less damage than another creature would have and resisted the paralysis. Though pinned, it launched a blast of air at Johnny.

His foe's resilience and blast of air seems to only further the blind rage of the voracious undead, as he continues to claw away at the form, heedless of the apparent impossibility of the task. Closing your eyes is apparently actively toxic to the laws of physics. Who knew?

In order to use a spell-like ability while grappling, the creature would have to succeed on a DC 23 Concentration check, as detailed in the Concentration skill description.

EDIT: Also, he still has to make the check vs. being Pinned, with the -5 penalty from being Paralyzed. It matters.

Johnny grins as he feels his foe stop moving, the necromantic energies overwhelming its body, but yelps and opens his eyes in surprise as a blast of lightning hits him in the jaw, throwing him backwards. Glaring at the paralyzed form, he plunges his wicked claw into the center of the whirling form and pulls, attempting to disrupt whatever force was animating it.

The creature takes 13 damage and must make a DC 23 Fort save or die.

Again, Johnny feels his damage is less effective than normal, which in turn makes it far easier to survive the coup de grace. Unfortunately the creature was very unlucky and died anyway.
