You did not ID the creature.

The creature appeared to ignore the effects of the potion as it grew wings and flew after the swordmage. It was quite fast, catching up to him quickly and striking him with a fist. Worse than the damage, Antaeus felt the creature's negative energy infect him (you gain a negative level. Normally your max HP would only be reduced by 5, but this special wight reduces it by 8).

Huh, vampiric touch isn't negative energy.
The creature growls and its muscles seem to grow larger. It strikes back at the swordmage, striking him with a fist, and Antaeus feels the negative energy infecting him increase.
