Re: CCO
I live in a 'dead' coal mining town.. My dad walked to work to his mine..the Rock dump used to be a man-made mount, about 100 yards from out house.
in the early years, the company built house for the coalminers to live in ( and pay rent to the Company)..each town ( named after thier mine..mine is called Mine 40..or Eureka 40 )
each town had a company store..that you used 'storebooks' to pay your bil they added up.. that bill came right out of the Miner's paychecks
when suerpmarkets and stores opened up...sometimes guys would get fired..or 'laid off' because they bought a ringer washer from another store.
our company.. through people out of their homes on Christmas eve, ebcause they tried to unionize...a FArer who lives..maybe 1/4 mile away helped people set up tents to live in , in below zero weather.... Pinkertons would bust up meetings and ehads, when folks had union meetings....when I was young, my Dad took his turn at picketing a scab mine... there was an altercation and a pinkerton-type, through a Miner under the wheels of a moving coal truck
The company pitted ethic battles... we were Hungarian to teh boss would tell the hungarians.." those Dagoes loaded more coal then you".. Or Tell the germans… those Limeies loaded more coal..ect ect.
as a Mailman, I was our shop steward, and would have to fight against overburden routes, unfair practices , like 'buddies' gettign time off , when normal folks couldn't
In the end?.. the unions saved kids a from child labor.. helped women escape brutal conditions and ..for the most part..sex-for -jobs.... aroung these parts, the only ones who complain, are those who want no union shops, so they don't have to worry about working conditions!
so?..yeah.. bad stuff happened before I was born.. and when I was young..some stuff continued ..and still does...but its nice to know, someone has your back!
