Box 2 (Espiaux) 003-5742

Hayden spent most of the night of Gypsy Moth's arrival working the final details of the deals for the group's speculative cargo.  In the morning he tells the others that stevedores should arrive late morning to offload all but the 10 tons of consumer goods/parts and the 10 tons of computer components.  He then asks the others to "do whatever needs doing" while he takes himself offline for some much needed sleep. (OOC: Part of the "botting" of Hayden until his player is able to return)

The stevedores will arrive at 1000.

Two notes arrive in Gypsy Moth's electronic account before business hours.

One is from RSS Inc, which has the contract for freight charters on Box 2.  In polite business terms, it asks Moth's next destination and amount of cargo and passenger space the ship is offering.

The second note is from Roan Alagash, Manager of Largen Chandlers Inc, the spacer supply concession on Box 2.  In addition to asking if the ship needs anything, the note welcomes, "if you have interest in purchsing trade items, please stop by my office for coffee this morning."

As an aside, the ship has 15 tons (of 104) of fuel and 210+ personweeks of life support (of 240 initially) remaining.  Stern has placed the ship on minimal powerplant usage while docked.  You'll burn two tons per week, so no worries about powerplant fuel, but you'll definitely need to fuel for jump.

In reply to Referee (msg #1):

Shortly after 0800, a SPA (Starport Port Authority) functionary arrives with a printed invitation.  It invites the Captain and company (OOC: Since Hayden is essentially an NPC at the moment someone should go in his stead) to meet the station director, Athena Xiu, at her office for a courtesy call at 0945.

Jim's in a good mood - over his handover and ready for dockside - as he dusts some cat hair off his suit, while addressing Jack and Danica regarding the invite.

"What say we meet this Athena and then hit the Beach*?  Think we can trust one of the hired hand to handle the stevedores?"

OOC: Hayden's sleeping and the stevedore's are coming 15 min after the invite time, so someone should overlook.  *Beach = The Steel Beach bar/lounge.

Re: Box 2 (Espiaux) 003-5742

Danica enters the lounge with Jacques.  She gives the Doc and Mr. Jinx a glance on the couches.  Apparently, the good doctor has found his companion again without any assistance from her.  A raised eyebrow is all that accompanies that thought.  Well, and another slight smile.

Then Dani nods to both Jacques and Doc, "Well, someone is going have to meet with the Director.  The protocols must be maintained."  She looks both men up and down for a brief moment, seemingly appraising their attire, "And I guess that we are it."  A turn of the head and a curt nod accompany Jacques idea that Bertrand and Thera hold down the ship.  She trusts both of them implicitly having known them for quite a while and been through some rather harrowing experiences with them.

While tugging at her sleeve pleats for a moment, a slight smile plays on Dani's lips as she turns to go with Jacques and Doc, "And there is no time like the present."  Her posture seems just a little more erect and her demeanor a touch aloof as she begins to head towards the main lock with the others.

Seeing Danica's look, Jack takes a moment to evaluate his uniform. "Ship's livery is... rather uninspired, I suppose, but I think it does me well to maintain appearances."

For some reason he felt slightly embarrassed but shook it off. If he had his druthers he'd relax into his usual dark jeans and jacket. "But I have a feeling the port director wouldn't mind if I showed up in one of Thera's outfits..."

Jack slaps the release on the airlock and steps into the docking tube and into Box 2.

Re: Box 2 (Espiaux) 003-5742

In reply to Jacques Keveloh (msg #6):

The three of you depart Gypsy Moth, and step on to the cargo deck of Box 2.  Over a third of the Box is dedicated to fuel tanks to refuel visiting starships.  The next largest use of space is the one you're in, the cargo deck.  An 8m high rectangular area, the cargo deck connects the eight docking stations and facilitates the transfer and storage of freight.  At one end of the cargo deck is Alagash's, a small ship's chandlery that carries supplies and life support equipment.  Above Alagash's, protruding above the Box's dorsal side, is a spherical hab pod.  It houses the crew and transient accomodations, as well as the Steel Beach and the Box's cafeteria.  Below the Box is another spherical pod.  The ventral pod contains Box 2's powerplant, life support, operations center, and the offices of the Port Authority.  It is there that you are heading now.

Carefuel to stay within the yellow-marked personnel walkways, you proceed towards the lift.  Port activities are in full swing this morning, but, other than a trio of stevedores gathering near Gypsy Moth, there isn't much going on.  The bay is less than half-full of shipping containers and there are only a handful of spacers on errands, making social calls, or just wandering about taking the chance to get off their ships, even if the only thing to see is a station.

As you step into the lift, you wonder what to expect from the Director.  On the one hand, Box 2 doesn't offer nearly the quality of life of, say, Gaithersburg Down or Espiaux Down.  On the other hand, as the port of entry to the Free Republic's capital system, it is regarded as a pretty important post.  Conventional dockside wisdom holds that Box 2 posts are considered "dues payers" positions for SPA workers and that Box 2 directors tend to be on upwards career trajectories.

You take the lift down into the ventral pod, stepping out into the utilitarian Port Authority reception area.  You know from previous visits that the station's operations center is to one side of the reception area, behind locked doors.  The Port Director's office is to the other.

The muscular and handsome mid-twenties SPA rating at the reception desk takes your names.  His name strip reads Wylins.  He flashes Danica a flirtatous smile, as if to assess her receptiveness.

Wylins steps into the Director's office and returns a few minutes later, "The Director will see you now."

You step into Director Xiu's office and are immediately struck by the change in decor.  The office is richly appointed with wood-paneling, thick carpeting, and leather and wood furniture.  Behind the Port Director's desk, the transparent bulkhead offers a commanding view of the underside of the station and the ships docked there.  Gypsy Moth's belly is in full view from the office, her wingtip hazard lights winking in the night.

In her drab grey working uniform, the Port Director seems underdressed for the rich leather and polished antique wood furnishings.  She is of moderate height, appears to be in her late forties and has her chestnut hair pulled back into a tight bun.  Her features are angular and naturally severe, a look not moderated by her drab grey uniform.

Her voice is warmer than her appearance suggests as she greets the group.  "Good morning, I am Port Director Athena Xiu.  Welcome to Largen Solar Orbiting Station Two."

Jack barely notices and barely interacts with the SPA functionary outside of the Port Director's office; he stands waiting, hands clasped loosely behind his back, preoccupied and keeping his thoughts to himself.

As the group enters the office Jack's eyes roam the room, with an appreciative nod and a smile on his face.

"Good morning, Director Xiu," Jack says, stepping forward and extending his hand. "My name is Jacques Keveloh, Bridge Officer of Gypsy Moth, recently arrived out of Alsace. This is Danica Moreau, our pilot, and this is our ship's physician, Doctor Jim Jones. Thank you for the invitation to meet, it's quite a privilege."

He gestures to the viewport, certain that the Director knew exactly which ship out there was the Moth. "I'd like to return the courtesy and offer you a tour of Gypsy Moth, should you have the time while we're in port. There's more to her than meets the eye, which I believe you would appreciate."

Doc appraises the room and the woman.  He's not overly fond of out of place, ostentatious, executive rooms, or rather the sort of person who generally inhabits them.  But, Director Wu's appearance and manner, puts him at his ease that they won't be dealing with some pompous bureaucrat.

With a smile he returns Wu's greeting, "A pleasure.  Quite nice to meet someone runs such an efficient outfit."

Re: Box 2 (Espiaux) 003-5742

Danica is fairly quiet and very alert on the lift to the Director's office.  As the lift approaches the proper level, Dani pulls on the sleeves of her jumpsuit to pull the pleats in line.  She also checks her ponytail and the placement of her shades, using the reflective surface of the lift doors as mirror.  She also rolls her shoulders slightly, which produces a quiet, though audible popping sound as some tension appears to be relieved.

Once the doors open, the former FRA Major moves quickly and efficiently to the reception desk to announce their arrival.  She smiles at the man behind the desk rather perfunctorily until she realizes that he is showing more than a passing interest in her.  Her right eyebrow peeks out over the line of her glasses for brief moment and her smile takes on a slightly crooked, more mischievous, look to it.  But, she does not say anything extra, except offering a "Thank you, Mr. Wylins." to the young man specifically as he rises to tell the Director they are here.

As she gets up to go into the Director's office, Dani states off-hand (but just loud enough to be overheard by the receptionist), "Doc, are you sure about going to the Steel Beach after this?"

Once in the office, Danica lets Jacques take the lead.  She acknowledges the Director as she is introduced.  "Good morning and thank you, Director." she states simply and directly.  The woman seems down to earth enough - now, it is simply a matter of seeing what, if anything, she wants of them.

A slight smile darts across Xiu's face and vanishes.  She indicates three overstuffed, leather armchairs facing her large, polished wood desk and invites the group to sit.

As you are settling into the seats, Xiu proceeds to a sideboard.  She pours a brown liquid from a crystal decanter into four elegant tumblers.  Xiu serves each of you a tumbler from a silver serving tray, taking the last for herself.  "Do you imbibe?", she asks as she sits in her own impressive chair and leans back.

Dani sits easily and comfortably in the leather chair.  The surface squeaks only slightly as she shifts her weight while getting comfortable.  Her legs are crossed and her arms draped casually on the armrests, while she sits there watching the Director pour drinks.

Danica holds up a hand to the tray and the tumbler that awaits her there.  "Thank you, Director, but I cannot partake." she notes, adding rather quickly and more quietly, "Duty."

The raven-haired pilot smiles slightly at Jack's toast.  She merely inclines her head to acknowledge the sentiment as the others drink.

Re: Box 2 (Espiaux) 003-5742

In reply to Dr. Jim D. Jones (msg #14):

The superbly blended sctoch is silky smooth as it slides down your throat.  You feel a pleasant warmth spreading in your belly and diffusing to your extremities.  This may not be the best scotch you have ever had, but it isn't far from it.

Between the Director's hospitality, the lavishness of her office, and the offer of alcohol during business hours, this may be the oddest encounter you have ever had with a SPA functionary.  Typically you associate SPA with bureaucratic annoyance rather than this.

Sipping her scotch appreciatively, the director swivels her chair to observe the underbelly of the station and the ships in port.  She is silent for a few moments, perhaps lost in reflection, perhaps savoring her drink and affording you the chance to do the same.  You can see a navy cutter departing, presumably on some errand to the SDB hovering a few thousand kilometers away.

Almost musingly, the Director begins, "I have known Petra Zamorin for many years.  Bright, ambitious, sly."  With a sarcastic, self-mocking smile and lively eyes she looks back at you and notes, "she reminds me of myself."

Languidly she holds up a hand, "don't bother commenting.  I know what you'd say and I'm just a tipsy old lady blowing exhaust through her vent. Point is, you've got Petra's backing and that's something."

She turns back towards the view window.  She sighs and says in a sad tone, quite a bit more serious than before, "This station isn't at all what it seems.  The gateway to the stars, a bastion against contamination by outsiders, a symbol of the Free Republic's technological supremacy.  Really it's a front line in a different war.  The parochialism, the self-aggrandizment in the name of patriotism, the corruption, and the fuzzy wishfulness of so many downworld, only sap our strength.  So eager to line their pockets, to score political or commercial points, our friends at home fall into the trap of thinking Liberty versus FSP*, Pathfinder versus SPA, Colonization versus Education, or what have you is the most important issue of the day.  The truth, that no one dirtside talks about but everyone knows, is that Espiaux needs the galaxy beyond the Boxes far more than the galaxy needs Espiaux. She needs the Empire, Svetlana, the Aslan, and all the little dirtball worlds to trailing.  Without the trade, the links, the ideas, and yes, even the threats, our little world would collapse in on herself."

*=Liberty and FSP are the two largest political parties in the Free Republic parliament at the moment.

She turns back to you. With another gracious smile, she adds, "But I don't suppose I'm telling you anything you don't already know, and I do so ramble on sometimes, especially after drink."

She takes another sip of scotch and adds in a lighter tone, "Besides, politics is too distasteful a subject for a friendly conversation between spacers.  I understand from your cargo manifest that Gypsy Moth is carrying a bit of freight for Tupolev.  Will you be making a port call there?"

Jack nods slightly. "We do indeed have a lot to be delivered there. We haven't had time to investigate speculative opportunities yet so our exact route is unknown at the moment."

He takes a sip of the scotch. "Having said that, we have been planning to deliver that lot ourselves and I for one assumed we would go through Vauclain. But I understand there's a  bit of tension between the Republic and Halowon there at the moment. Mineral mining rights, I believe? Perhaps that's why the Halowon Ambassador started the new year with such a positive op ed piece?" ** A sardonic smile crosses his face as he savors a bit more of the liquor.

"Regardless, if you have any word of Vauclain - or could suggest another route to Tupolev - it would be much appreciated."

The scotch was smooth, but mention of Petra instantly numbed any soothing effect it would have had on the doc.  The woman was pretty smooth, too.  Apparently considered herself ambitious and sly to boot and not shy about pointing it out.

Jim wouldn't have given two thoughts to not letting anyone and everyone know their intended course, but the woman's smooth talk made him jittery about doing so now.

"Yes, we will likely stop over there, assuming plans don't change.  Which they often do.  Why do you ask?"

He continued to smile and enjoy the scotch, but he wasn't a good enough people person to completely hide his uncomfortableness.

Danica nods in agreement with Director Xiu, the smile on her lips slightly rueful and her fingers steepled before her chin, "People are people, Director.  And politics are politics.  One could say that almost everything is politics..."  She shrugs slightly, and then notes quietly, if slightly rhetorically, "We might dearly like to see those things change.  But, really, what can be done about it?"

She lets her statement hang there for a moment, then moves on with Jack and Doc and talking about their next destination.  She listens quietly as they both ask in different ways, what business it is of the Director about how and why they go towards Tupolev.  Danica smiles slightly as it is interesting to watch the two effectively try a variation on 'Good Cop-Bad Cop' or, rather, 'Civil Spacer, Gruff Spacer'.

It's either that, or the three of them are living caricatures of the 'See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil' monkeys.  And as the silent one, Dani knows which one she is...

In reply to Danica Moreau (msg #18):

Xiu takes another sip of her scotch and acknowledges Danica, "Quite right."

When Jacques brings up the op-ed piece, the Director replies diplomatically, "That piece was not particularly constructive, but it illustrates the mindset we must consider."

"There is a prominent Halowon businessman, Helmar Nagel, who has recently arrived on the station.  He and his associates are looking for passage back to Halowon space.  Gypsy Moth appears to be the best option for Mr. Nagel to return home safely and swiftly.  I expect he will be approaching you for passage.  You would be doing a service to the Free Republic, and to the cause of peace, by delivering Mr. Nagel safely to Tupolev."

"The reason I wanted to speak to you personally about him is to alert you to a certain risk.  There are those who might see advantage if Mr. Nagel were not to return alive to Halowon.  I don't have any actionable knowledge of specific threats to him, just an appreciation to his vulnerability.  I will do what I can to ensure his safety here on the station, but once he leaves it will be up to you."

"There are advantages and disadvantages to each route.  The space around Vauclain itself is patrolled by the Free Republic Navy, but downworld is low tech and somewhat chaotic.  You may also have difficulty finding cargo to Vauclain."

"Ozawa in the Vauclain system is obviously more security conscious and is also patrolled, but is much more cosmopolitan.  The same goes for Svetlana."

Re: Box 2 (Espiaux) 003-5742

In reply to Dr. Jim D. Jones (msg #20):

The Director replies, "Of course, I dined with him only last night.  He is best known as a dealmaker.  He brings together principals from different polities or industries on large business agreements.  He also has ties by marriage to Rabenshild Bank, a sizeable private bank on Tupolev."

"I can not claim to be privy to the particulars of his current project, but I am told it involves a joint venture to establish new trading routes between Tupolev and the Free Republic.  Several parties could stand to gain from access to new sources of goods, but other factors would suffer from increased competition."

"Politically, the danger would be from factions that have become polarized in their opposition to any improvement in relations.  Unfortunately, the strength of our Navy may work against peace."  She shakes her head ruefully, "Some people downworld don't grasp that the cost of war, even one the Free Republic is virtually assured of winning, far outweigh any benefits to be gained.  With an election later this year, a new trade arrangement or the collapse thereof could be milked for points in the polls.  Everyone knows who the hawks are in the right wing of the Liberty Party.*"

"Externally, factors on Svetlana would not benefit from more Halowon goods in our markets and there are some in the Principality who would want the Free Republic and Halowon to war with each other."

Xiu shrugs her shoulders helplessly.  "I know I haven't narrowed the threats down much.  I wish I could give you better insight, or a suspect list, but I can't.  I also readily admit I could be exaggerating the danger, but I have learned to trust my gut in this job and my gut says Mr. Nagel is at risk."

* = the hawks to whom the Director is referring are probably the group of MPs closely associated to Michael Porter, a colorful, self-proclaimed "unabashed patriot" and senior representative from Espiaux's Koto Range district.

"I'm beginning to think we don't have much choice in this matter, Director Xiu," Jack says carefully. He looks at the Doctor and Danica, his face serious but non-committal. "A recommendation by Petra Zamorin could be construed as a... direct request. But there are a lot of unknowns in this endeavor that could set us up for failure."

Re: Box 2 (Espiaux) 003-5742

Questions.  Plenty of questions.  Some with possible answers, others with less possible answers.  Danica's posture in the seat continues to be relaxed, even as Jack implies that the job offer at hand is not really an offer, nor it is very well defined.  Her mind is racing, however.  There are plenty of undefined parameters in this job.  In some ways, too open-ended for her liking.  In other ways, it is just par for the course with what she is used to dealing with.  Her hands steepled for before her chin and lips, she waits until Jack asks his questions and then posits her own, piggy-backing them onto Jack's line of thought.

"Director, I sympathisize with your concern; a display of genuine friendship.  But may I ask why Mr. ..." she pauses briefly as she mentally searches for the name for a moment, "ah, Nagel did not contact us directly?  While, we do specialize in being a high-speed courier for people and property - that does require some cooperation and interaction with the clientele, in question."  Danica considers some of the logitistics as she ventures, "How urgently do Mr. Nagel and his associates need to be returned to Tupolev?"  Her brow furrows for a moment as she ponders the specifics, "You did mention associates, correct?  How many people and how much associated cargo would we be contracted to transport to Tupolev?"

Given Athena's concern within the Federation, Dani also asks, "And are we to assume that once we enter Halowon space that Mr. Nagel is safe?  That there a designated drop point off for him once we are there?  Or are we to assume that the potential threat level to his safety remains high there as well?"  It's always back to defining the parameters of the job for her - the latter could extend the nature of this job extensively.  Without actual evidence though, the Director asking for a fair bit of intangible action.  Protecting against anything is ... difficult; and the short-haired brunette's pursed lips reflects that.

Dani is also worried about what his disposition to this arrangement is, she shifts in her seat, the leather creeking slightly.  Her tone is matter-of-fact, if a little distant as she brainstorms, while prompts, "There will also be questions about how much direct, and indirect, protection we are to afford Mr. Nagel at any given time.  And how much of our protection he wants or feels he needs."  She arches and eyebrow and glances at Jack and Doc, and then back to Director Xiu, "Or, perhaps, those are questions that we should be asking of Mr. Nagel himself?"

In reply to Dr. Jim D. Jones (msg #24):

Athena Xiu chuckles at Jacques insinuation the job is mandatory and graciously assuages his concerns, "Hardly my dear boy.  I am barely the boss of the two dozen or so people here on the station, much less anyone else's. I am simply appealing to you to as fellow citizens.  I don't have the authority to order you to do anything, outside of typical SPA duties at any rate, nor can I offer much in the way of inducement."

She pauses to wet her lips from her tumbler.  She lays her hand on her desk and runs it along the smooth wood and allows, "I do have some small modicum of influence her on this station though, for fueling priorities, cargo handling, and the like."

She listens appreciatively to Danica's questions and notes, "You are quite right my dear.  Some clients can be their own worst enemies when it comes to security.  Like most members of the weaker sex, no offense gentlemen, Helmar does most of his thinking with his smaller head.  There is a crewmember here, Claudette, who is... vivacious.  She is not a threat, except to his stamina, and has occupied much of his time since he and his party arrived two days ago."  The Director allows herself a small bit of off-color gossip as she remarks, "I should not wonder if the poor man lacks the strength to stand this morning."

"The good Claudette will continue to keep Helmar enagaged as much as possible until he departs, for his own good, of course."

Noting the Doctor's deficit, the Director stands and proceeds to the sideboard, talking as she goes, "Helmar Nagel and two associates arrived on station two days ago.  They brought with them a considerable amount of baggage, but not above what is considered customary for quality passengers.  I should think one of his assistants will contact you shortly as I would expect them to be rather interested in the prospect of making it to Tupolev in three weeks or so, rather than the six weeks or more it would take them in any other non-Ozawa trader."  She pauses.

"Although it would be regrettable if anything were to happen to Helmar after he disembarks your ship on Tupolev, there really is not much we can do to prevent it is there?"

Returning with the decanter, she generously replenishes the Doctor's tumbler (and recharges Jack's if he desires), "Do you like it Doctor?  It is a Brambleton pure single-malt, 5703 I believe."

"Indeed," doc replied with a large grin, giving his appreciation of the drink and her replies.

The Brambleton was certainly affecting Jim's demeanor in a positive way.

Looking around to his companions, he added, "Thanks for the drinks and the heads up, I think we will seriously entertain assisting Mr. Nagel and would appreciate any help you may be able to provide."

Re: Box 2 (Espiaux) 003-5742

Danica can only smirk slightly at Athena's methods for keeping Helmar occupied.  But it is a tried and true method, at least in the short term.  Of course, how Helmar got any of his other work done is likely a mystery, if Claudette was any good at what the Director was implying.  As for what that meant with respect to what Nagel's expectations once on the Gypsy Moth might be - well, Dani figures that she would temper any expectations early and that Thera and the others on-board were all adults and could handle themselves well enough.

When the Director addressed Dani's concerns about Halowon security and continuing to protect Nagel once in Tupolev with a rather blase attitude, Danica merely nodded.  It was probably a good thing that she had mirrorshades on.  From her standpoint, it could be practicality or it could be deeper plans on Athena's part.  Dani's paranoia meant that she knew what she suspected, but for her that didn't change whether they would take the job (they would) or whether they should take the job (they should) or whether they had any choice in taking the job (they didn't).  If nothing else, they needed the work and Hayden's directive with respect to their cover required that they not burn any bridges unnecessarily.  Done properly and professionally, this job could not do anything but help to enhance their reputations.

Dani returns Doc's glance and nods in agreement with his statements.  She merely added, "We are grateful, Director Xiu.  This situation seems tailor-made for us; we don't consider ourselves 'elite security specialists' for no reason..  We'll be in touch with Mr. Nagel and his associates in the morning."  The slight smirk returns along with a raised eyebrow.  The 'business' portion of the meeting appeared to be coming to an end.  Unless Director Xiu had additional matters that required their attention, of course.  But the dark-haired ex-ACID operative figures that it is for Athena to broach any such topics first.

The Director smiles, "Thank you, you are doing a service to the Free Republic.  I will ensure Gypsy Moth gets priority service from station personnel."

Graciously, Xiu brings the meeting to a close, "Unfortunately, I will have to cut our meeting short as other pressing business to attend.  Thank you for your understanding."

Still smiling, the Director shakes hands with each of you, remembering each of your names, and wishes you a pleasant and profitable stay at the station and successful voyage to Tupolev.  Afterwards you are politely ushered back to the lift by the same rating as earlier.

It is now a bit past ten in the morning and you are free to do whatever you choose (to either of the cargo brokers, to the Steel Beach, to seek out Nagel, visit another ship at dock, purchase supplies at Alagash's, return to the ship, whatever).

About this time, you get a text from Hayden:

"cargo ops smooth. below list freight + spec enough fill hold Ozawa or Svetlana. Svet ship arriving soon maybe more price comp that route.  foods poss good spec but poss perishable.  Working passengers next."

OOC: BTW, in this TU ships aren't arbitrarily required to stay in port for one week between jumps.  Port stays are more a function of cargo delivery times, passenger booking, and other commercial factors.  I understand the one week thing as a courtesy to shippers and passenger agencies to allow them to work delivery and embarkation schedules, but it isn't an ironclad rule, especially at a station like this (if a potential passenger isn't already on the station or on the sissy arriving on day 009...)

"Sounds fine. I'll join you, my good Doctor."

As they head towards the Beach, Jack texts Hayden back. "Copy that, we have one VIP plus unknown number of lackeys for Tupolev. Will confirm by tomorrow AM. Port Director may grease our wheels a bit. Thinking Ozawa then quick turnaround to Tupolev. Please front Lance creds to finalize livery for all crew through Alagash. Steel Beach for lunch if you like."

Jack then pinged Lance to ask him to meet with Hayden and handle the remaining livery for the crew. He was starting to feel like a micro-manager but it was better to be in the loop and make sure things we're getting done than to assume it would all just happen.

"Things move fast, don't they?" Jack mused aloud as he slipped his comm into his pocket. "I imagine we could be heading out in a day or so if Director Xiu has her way. Better make the most of the Beach, Doctor!" Jack said, grinning.

Danica thanks Athena for her hospitality before walking out with the others.  She smiles slightly as she thanks Wylins for his help and enters the lift with Jack and Doc.

Once in the lift, she nods to the others, "To the Beach it is."

She nods approvingly as Jack makes arrangements.  Danica stands at ease, quite still actually, as the lift jets the away.  She can only chuckle slightly as Jack makes his rejoinder about the timing and fact that they may only get a couple of meals on station before heading off.

While still in the speeding lift, Dani asks off-hand, "So, are we going through Svetlana or Vauclain?"  As she does so, her head turns and gleaming mirrorshades focus on her two companions.

"I'd say Vauclain, or probably Ozawa to be more precise," Jack says amicably. "We've got freight and now passengers to Tupolev. If we go through Svetlana we add a jump-1. Which is adding another week with said passenger."

On a lark, Jack gets his hand comp out and searches the local nets for Nagel. "Lafleur and his team were easy. If the Port Director is keeping this Nagel busy by throwing a woman at him, Thera would probably jettison the man if there was a third jump she had to endure... And no telling what his associates might be like."

As they passed through the main cargo area again, Jack sent a quick text message to Hayden while responses to his net query loaded in the background. "Suggestions on fine food and drink much appreciated. Tupolev passenger may require extreme coddling."

When they got to Alagash's, below the Steel Beach, Jack paused. "Grab us a table, I'll be up in a moment. I want to order extra, ah, libations for the Tupolev run. There's more than one way to sap a man's energy..."

In reply to Dr. Jim D. Jones (msg #34):

OOC: And the party has split, Eeek!  (just kidding)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alagash's Supplies

The supply shop on Box 2 is small, and generally stuffed with equipment, leading to an almost claustrophobic experience.  It is well-stocked, though, and just about everything legal can be found here, though at a considerable markup as it is the only such store for many millions of kilometers.  As Roan Alagash is fond of joking, location is everything in business.

Alagash himself is a bit of a larger-than-life personality.  With his back slapping nature, habit of calling all his customers "my good friend", sharp suits, slicked-back hair, and thick gold rings on each hand, Alagash is often caricatured behind his back.  He has run the shop since before Jacques begin spacing and has an instinctive understanding of the kinds of equipment spacers need.  He also known to rent cargo space on the Box and sell goods on speculation.

When Jacques enters the shop, Alagash and Lance Charpentier are leaning over his sales counter conferring on something, "so you see my good young friend, to place the logo here is no problem..."

Further back down one of the shop's few aisles two spacers stand in close proximity, examining some piece of equipment (Jacques can't tell what at this point).  Judging from their height, the man's full beard and the woman's waist length hair, they are likely Svetlanan.

Hayden texts, "Meet you at Beach after cgo hndlng comp"

A quick scan of Nagel's name in the local news doesn't turn up anything in the mainstream press.  There are however a handful of reports on niche business sites, mostly having to do with shipping, shipyards, and investing.  All but a handful of those sites are pay-for-content, allowing a casual reader only the first two or three sentences.  The few that Jacques can access talk about how any plan to start a shipping line to compete with Ozawa Lines on Republic-Empire trade will fail because:

a) the Free Republic would never agree to build J-2 ships for any company based in the Empire, fearing the risk of technology transfer
b) even if they did, the production schedule at Espiaux's orbital shipyard is already booked to 100% capacity for years to come with naval construction
c) Ozawa would buy out any startup that threatened to compete in Ozawa's core business area

One article speculates that reason c) is actually the point behind Helmar Nagel's plan.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Steel Beach

Occupying part of the dorsal spherical pod, the Steel Beach would probably command a spectacular view of deep space if the overhead or bulkheads were transparent.  The designers apparently figured that the last thing people on a space station in far orbit needed was to see more endless space, the walls and ceiling are thankfully opaque and painted a comforting wood color.  Likewise, where many dirtside spacer bars strive for coziness or privacy, the Steel Beach is built to encourage sociality.  There are no waiters and patrons must go to the bar to retrieve their food or drink.  Likewise there are no booths or out-of-the-way tables.  The bar occupies one end of The Beach, to the left.  A small group of tables is clustered around a low fountain/carp pond in the center of the room, and another small group of tables ring a holographic bar games unit.  The place probably has enough seats for about forty people.

Besides Dani and Doc, there are only three people at the Beach.  Of course, that may be because it is not quite 1100 hours yet.  An early twenties man is behind the bar, chatting with two females in ESL uniforms.  The ESL spacers backs are to you, but as you enter they glance back to see who you are.  One female is a flat-faced, heavy-set brunette in worn spacer's coveralls while the other is petite, also brunette, but with a lively smile and a uniform that, if not new, is at least better-cared for and somewhat more flattering than her companion's.

OOC: But Jim still has to ditch Danica! :)

As they entered, Jim surveyed the Beach.  Real spacers don't keep dirtside hours, so he was disappointed at the lack of 'scenery'.

Still, he'd make the best of it - smiling his brightest at the glances from the gals as he made his way to the bar.  He took a seat on the side of the heavy-set brunette and proceeded to introduce himself.  (Jim knew if he was to have a chance with the petite one he'd have to get on her companion's good side first...)

"Hello," he offered her his hand.  "Doc Jones.  Off the Gypsy Moth.  And our pilot, Ms. Moreau."

He, of course, also offered the petite one his hand.

Dani walks along side Doc as they enter the Steel Beach, pausing at the doorway to keep pace with the doctor.  She takes in the surroundings. though her head barely moves.  But as the good doctor is a well aware, Danica's eyes are always moving, being especially well-suited for motion contrast and tracking.  He was, in fact, one of the people that helped make them that way.

Her leather and suede boots click softly on the powder-coated surface of the floor and the fabric of the jumpsuit and jacket swishing softly as she moved.

She nods in greeting to the bartender, but does not order anything.  Danica then inclines her head to the two ESL personnel.  A slight smile passes her lips, as she extends a hand.  Given that Doc is occupied with the larger female, Dani offers her right hand first to the petite one, and then to her companion.  When she is introduced, she adds, "Please, call me Danica." Dani notes genially, "A pleasure to meet you."  Having spoken and with her hand out, Danica head tilts slightly and moves up and down slightly, casting an appraising glance upon the two women.

Jack isn't interested in talking over the livery work at all; he doesn't even address it as he has faith that Lance can handle it. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but our ship has a pressing new need: I'd like to add four cases of a fine wine, two bottles of Brambleton scotch and two cases of the best beer you have on hand. This will be in addition to anything our steward, Mr. Marks, sees fit to order."

Alagash's

Charpentier greets Jacques quietly.  He seems appreciative that Jack doesn't try to micromanage him.

Alagash booms genially, "Of course my good friend.  It is always a pleasure to have customers of discerning taste!  I will bill these items to the ship's account and have them delivered shortly."

The two Sevtlanans have moved to stand behind you and Lance, not in a threatening way, just as waiting for the two of you to be done so they can have Alagash's undivided attention.

Up close they are clearly Svetlanans.  The man is about 40, wearing a spacer's jacket with a Sascha, a trim little 200 ton trader, patch.  He is clutching two different sizes of vacc suit gloves in meaty, hairy paws.  He is about 185cm tall with a high, rounded belly and a full black beard.  His eyes are such a liquid blue that you find yours involuntarily watering.  He nods to you politely.

the woman is a striking specimen.  Probably in her thirties, she stands at least 190cm with long limbs and a statuesque figure.  A single, long braid of flaxen hair falls to below her waist.  Her high cheekbones frame wide-set, ice blue eyes above a prominent, straight nose.  She seems aloof.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steel Beach

OOC: True, spacers don't keep normal hours but sometimes peoples' behavior is guided by expectations of what others will do.  You would expect the bar to become progressively busier throughout the day. Also, if someone's here in the daytime it probably means they're working nights.

The stocky, flat-faced crew-woman visibly brightens when Doc saunters over and introduces himself.  She extends him a soft hand and a surprisingly shy smile.  She introduces herself in a quiet voice as Nadine, astrogator on Elder Pine, an ESL 400ton Fat Trader.  She is drinking some form of greenish-white mixed drink.

The petite crewmember says with a naturally enthusiastic smile to both of you, "Very nice to meet you. Gypsy Moth? She just arrived this morning didn't she? Is this your first time to Espiaux?  Oh, I'm Linsey, engineer on Camille, by the way.  She's a sissy."

After some gentle, semi-subtle encouragement from her friend, Nadine invites Doc to have a seat.

Peter Kurbatkin, captain of Sascha."

He introduces the blonde, "My First Officer Anna."  She smiles a perfunctory smile and says, "A pleasure."

Kurbatkin pulls the second pair of vacc suit gloves out from under his left arm where he stashed them in order to shake hands.  Still smiling he remarks, "You can't beat Casere* but they're blasted expensive, eh?"

* Casere = An Espiaux based manufacturer of vacc suits and other space survival equipment.  They have a reputation for quality, but the models Kurbatkin is holding are high-end.  Given Alagash's reputation, they're probably quite expensive here.

Sascha's First Mate, her demeanor still aloof but attentive, smoothly inquires, "Is your ship a new regular on the Alsace-Espiaux run Mister Keveloh?"

Danica nods to both Linsey and Nadine.  She continues to stand, but more squarely faces Linsey to address her question.  "Yes, very early this morning.  It's the Moth's maiden voyage." she acknowledges readily.  "Though the crew itself has plenty of experience all about the Republic and beyond."

"How long have you been with the Camille?" Dani asks innocently of Linsey.  "And how do the two of you know each other?" she adds, figuring that the two must have served together in the past or something.  They seem an unlikely pair to be merely commiserating.

Danica squares her shoulders slightly to include Nadine (and Doc) in the conversation.  She looks thoughtful for the moment, "Isn't the Elder Pine berthed next to the Moth?  We're on Dock Four."  She tilts her head slightly, and after a slight pause, Dani ventures, "And she's bound for St. Croix isn't she?"

In reply to Dr. Jim D. Jones (msg #43):

Linsey brightly answers Danica, "This is just my fourth trip on Camille, but I've been with the company for almost eight years."  She loops her arm through Nadine's and adds with a laugh, "it was me who got my cousin in with the company." She jokingly pouts, "now she's an astrogator on a starship while I'm just a wrench turner on a sissy!"  She laughs and continues, "Just kidding.  There's no way I would trade, way too much math."  Linsey gives Doc a coy look and comments, "Nadine is definitely the smart one in the family."

For her part, Nadine seems more than willing to let her cousin carry the conversation until Danica and Doc mention their experience beyond the Republic.  Her innate reserve visibly drops and she asks Doc with interest, "Really?  Where have you been?  Have you been to the rim?"

The bartender responds with a suitably impressed "yes sir", but apologizes that the best scotch he has is Brambleton Red (still quite good).

Meanwhile, Linsey continues chatting with Danica, "Yep, her ship is next to yours and mine is next to hers, all right in a row."  Linsey leans in a little towards Danica and confides, "She's on the Alsace run via St. Croix, but Nadine wishes she was exploring new trade routes somewhere."

Around them, it looks like the Steel Beach may get a little more lively shortly.  The bartender is preparing for a rush and two more people have wandered in.  They are both male and dressed in dockside work clothes. In fact, you recognize them as stevedores (cargo handlers).  One is tall, lean and rugged, while the other is short, round, and unshaven.  They eye Doc with some envy for monopolizing the attention of all three females in the bar, but take beers and settle in at a table at the far end without approaching you guys.

Alagash's

Jack nods politely when introduced to Anna and chuckles lightly when Peter makes his joke. As Peter mentions the quality and cost of the Casere EVA gear, Jack nods again and smiles grimly.

"Pricey, indeed," he intones, intent on the items Peter has. "But you've made a good choice. We've been lucky enough to outfit ourselves almost entirely in Casere kit. It will hurt you now," -- Jack gestures discretely in spacer fashion to Alagash's store around them -- "but believe me, you'll be glad every time you use it. The damned stuff has saved me once or twice and it lasts a star's age."

When Anna inquires about the Alsace-Espiaux run, Jack shakes his head good-naturedly. "Oh, no, not at all. We've some freight and a passenger to Tupolev."

Knowing his dead-end comment could put an end to the conversation, he addresses Peter once again, his voice a little lower as Alagash and Charpentier continue with the livery patches. "You know, I'm an old hand at vacc suits and some of our crew is having lunch above at the Steel Beach. If you care to join us perhaps I could help you choose some kit and save you a credit or two. At the very least we'll pass the time in good company. By the stars, there's not much else to do on this can."

Danica smiles at Linsey's openness and enthusiasm.  She nods as the young lady speaks about the jobs that she and Nadine do.  When she finds out that Nadine is an astrogator, Dani simply quips with a slightly conspiratorial lean towards Linsey, "Perhaps she merely enjoys the power of being able to tell people just where to go."  Her easy smile and light tone, let both women know that she's only jesting - well, that and the unsuppressed chuckle.

Though she hears the question, Danica says nothing about their travels - especially since Nadine appears to be addressing Doc.  Instead, Dani continues to chat idly with Linsey.  "There's nothing wrong with being a 'wrench turner'.  Every spacer worth their salt knows that a ship is more grease than glory."  She confides to Linsey, "Most of that stuff about eight-fold symmetry space and twelfth-order Miligore tenser topology eludes me, too..."

"Ah, Jack..." Dani notes rather cheerfully as she turns towards him.  She glances back at Nadine and Linsey with a slight knowing smile before adding, "Jack, here, is our astrogator on the Gypsy Moth."

The Steel Beach is starting to fill up quickly now.  Several new groups of people have entered the bar including:

- Prisa Gadron, who joins you

- Three more Box crewmen, two maintenance types, one male and one female, and a rather fetching blonde, female medic

- Four Svetlanan non-spacers, two adults and two teenage children, look more interested in lunch than revelry

- Five Svetlanan spacers, mixed genders, but not Peter or Anna yet

- Two non-spacer, one male one female, business types, sitting apart from any other group but clearly not a couple

- Four Ozawa Lines crewmembers, three male, one female, obviously looking to party, they make a bee line for the bar

OOC: Recon checks might reveal more, as would overt observation or engagement in conversation

Prisa reports that cargo operations are complete and that Hayden says they went smoothly.  She also reports that Hayden says he's feeling out the freight broker on rates now.

Linsey nods agreement at Danica's comments and adds cheerfully, "Yup, ships don't go without their heart and soul."  She rolls her eyes, "theoretical mathematics, ugh."  Linsey keeps glancing over at Doc and Nadine, but gives Jack a bouncy, "Hey, Linsey of Camille.  Great to meet you too.  Have you met my cousin Nadine?"

Linsey tugs her cousin's sleeve and introduces Jack to Nadine.  While she is doing that, one of the newly arrived Ozawa crewmembers, a tall, wiry guy with a lean face and unkempt hair, tells Danica, "Hey, I'm Tucker.  You've got a great lower deck.  Tokugawa's shipping outsystem tonight.  Wanna have some fun before I go?"

Dani nods in greeting to Prisa as she approaches the group.  Otherwise, she notes the entrance and filling of the Beach with more than passing interest, but she is pretty much engaged in conversation and doesn't want to look too obvious in her surveillance.

As the lanky one addresses her, Danica turns her head to bring it more inline with Tucker's.  An eyebrow raises itself above the rim of her mirrorshades.  "As touched as I am by your flattery and despite the lovely, if not very subtle, offer, Tucker." she notes evenly, "I think that you are way out of your league, young man."   Dani's tone  is cordial enough, but is just a little patronizing and the smile accompanies that last part bares a little too much tooth for comfort, making is every so slightly feral.

"Besides," she remarks, "You're leaving tonight.  I prefer a man with a lot more stamina."  She shakes her head slightly to no one in particular and the smile morphs into more of a smirk.  With that Dani turns her attention back to Linsey, Nadine, the newly arrived Prisa. and the other Moth men.

Jack smiles to Prisa as she arrives, nodding appreciatively at her report. In his peripheral vision he notices the various Svetlanans across the bar.

"Hello, Linsey." Jack turns to Nadine as Linsey pulls on her cousin's sleeve. "Nice to meet you, Nadine." Tucker's arrival catches Jack's attention and when Dani flays the man without a thought a dismissive chuckle escapes him. With a quick scan of the room, he shakes his head as he turns back to his party.

"Prisa, meet Linsey and Nadine,"
Jack enthuses, as if Tucker weren't there. To the group at large he says, "I saw Lance downstairs, he may come up for a bit. And I also invited a couple of Svetlanan merchants to have lunch with us."

Addressing Nadine's query as to his travels extending to the Rim, Jim replies simply, "Past," with continued bravado and a big swig of his drink.

The Danica arrangement is spoiling his game, but he's had enough drink that he's not bothered by it, and Tucker's timely interruption has him amused as he watches the interplay with their pilot.

After Jack arrives and garner's Linsey's attention, Jim acknowledges him with raised glass and "HiJack!," bemused by his own inside humor.

Then the blonde mechanic catches his keen, if slightly intoxicated, eyes.  Leaning in to talk to the bartender, he asks, "What's her prescription?"

In reply to Dr. Jim D. Jones (msg #52):

Tucker doesn't miss a beat.  He turns towards Linsey and says, "You're quite a little bottle rocket yourself.  Wanna go?"

The petite brunette holds up her hand, rolls her eyes in disgust, and answers with an exaggerated, "Pleeaze, I already have a vibrator."

Linsey's retort draws howls of laughter from the other Ozawa crewmen, and their satisfaction at Tucker's lack of success is obvious.

Linsey's remark also catches Nadine in mid-drink, causing some spray and coughing from the young navigator.  This gives Doc the perfect opportunity to catch the bartender and ask about the blonde medic, "Oh, Casey?  Yeah, she's new here.  She's drinking chardonnay.  I got her tables drinks right here if you want to take them over."  He indicats a glass of white wine and two glasses of beer.

Linsey catches Jacques elbow, leans in, and says, "Give you a tour of Camille?  Fewer jerks there."

About that time Lance Charpentier joins the group.

Jack shoots a sardonic smile to the good Doctor at his greeting. What?! I just walked in, brother...

He watches Tucker with bemusement as the spacer hits on Linsey and she shuts him down. "Seems like you're in the wrong place, friend," Jack says to Tucker firmly.

When Linsey leans in to invite him to the Camille Jack likewise leans in to her, allowing some discrete body contact. "Thank you, I'd love to. But I've invited someone to meet me here soon. How about dinner? If that's a busy time on your ship, maybe we could tour the Gypsy Moth instead..."

Lance's arrival pulls Jack back to the group at large. He introduces the gunner to Nadine and Linsey and when Doc is finished he catches the bartender's attention. "Red wine, Alsacian if you have it. Linsey, can I get you a drink?" He glances at the others. "Anyone like anything?"

Danica nods to Lance and makes sure that she places herself between him and Prisa for the time being.  Since Linsey seems a bit preoccupied with Jack and has proven that she can take care of herself, given her rejoinder to Tucker, Dani refocuses her attention on the crowd and their growing group, making idle conversation as necessary.  She smiles as Thera approaches, giving the young woman both a thumbs-up and a raised eyebrow as she appraises her apparel.

The dark-haired pilot begs off from any libations offered; she does, however, partake of food - seemingly fond alternately of salty and sugary items.

When a break in the conversation between Jack and Linsey occurs, Dani prompts the Moth's navigator, "So, who are we meeting with, Mr. Keveloh?"  Her interest is piqued...

"Two beers," he announces, placing them in front of the maintenance types.  Looking up, he acknowledges Thera's entrance and unnecessarily indicates, with his head, their party at the bar - mostly to make sure it's apparent he's with the group from the Moth in the hopes to get some points in.

"And a white for Ms. Casey," he continues, placing the chardonnay before the blonde, with a flourish.

"At least, that is what the man behind the counter would have me believe in return for delivering these," he added with mock concern that he may have been duped.

To the table at large, with a slight bow and his most fetching smile, "Forgive my intrusion, but I suspect Ms. Casey and I may share a common profession - Doc Jones, Jim, at your, " he pauses to emphasize the pun, "service."

Casey seems pleasantly surprised by Doc's approach, and glad to have some company other than her regular co-workers.  "Thank you for this," she says, indicating the wine.  Casey pats the arm of a chair next to her and invites Doc, "Have a seat."

Back at the bar, Tucker's eyes flash anger at Jacques' comment.  He looks about to turn and confront Jacques, when one of his shipmates places a hand on Tucker's shoulder and steers him towards a white liquor shot.  "Fracking dykes", he can be heard to mutter.  His eyes appraise Thera head to toe, lingering on some areas in between, but he doesn't say anything, choosing instead to down another drink.

Linsey shrugs at Jacques, "I go on shift at 1800", she says with a trace of disappointment.

Lance pairs off in conversation with Nadine.  Prisa is her usual laconic self when in groups.  She sips a juice and laughs at others jokes.

The group of Ozawa crewmen create a little space between themselves and your group at the bar.  Somehow Tucker ends up farthest from you, but whether this is by design of his cohorts or simple coincidence is unclear.  One bald, goateed Ozawa crewman, who seems an experienced bar hand, gives you a furtive wink and shrug.

After a few minutes, the female business woman approaches the bar to order entrees for herself and her companion.  As she is waiting for the now overworked bartender, she mentions casually, as an aside to Danica, Jacques, and Thera, "You wouldn't happen to be from the Gypsy Moth would you?  I'd like to talk to your captain or purser about passage, whenever convenient."

Shortly after that, captain Kurbatkin and Anna enter the bar.  They take a table near the fountain and wave Jacques over.

OOC: Time is distinctly non-linear in the bar today, part of the relatavistic physics of RPOL. ;)  If it really bothers anyone let me know, otherwise we'll roll with it.

It is obvious to Thera's discerning eye that the woman is Imperial, probably from Halowon itself based on the woman's high cheekbones and narrow face.  Her staid business attire and conservative, hair up style convey an impression of efficiency and business-first professionalism.  The woman's posture and well-worn data device holder indicate one who deals with details and is usually setting things up and implementing them.  Despite the high quality of the woman's clothing and jewelry, Thera's detects the aura of functionary rather than boss, but probably someone close to the boss like and aide or private secretary.

The woman accepts Thera's invitation of a drink and orders a high-end Alsatian wine.  She Introduces herself with a professional handshake and pleasant smile as, "Julianna Biebroeck.  My two associates and I are returning to Tupolev from Espiaux and are interested in comfortable, expeditious passage."  She allows, "Right now we're looking at passage on Sascha, but... we're still open to other ideas.  Is your ship headed towards Tupolev?"

Linsey replies to Jacques, "That sounds lovely."  She flashes a polite smile, says, "Don't let me interrupt your business.", and turns to disinterestedly listen to Nadine and Lance's conversation.

Meanwhile, at Doc's table...

The maintenance techs thank Doc warmly for the beer.  Casey asks, "How is it on a starship?  I've only been out here for a few weeks, on a one year contract, and I'm already getting station fever.  When I got here they let me tour one of the Navy ships and I can't imagine living in such spartan conditions for weeks on end."

"But please excuse me, I have a prior meeting." With another courteous nod to Biebroeck and a sly smile to Linsey, Jack crosses the bar toward Kurbatkin.

He catches the shrug from the goateed Ozawa spacer on the way, giving the man a quick shrug in return. No harm no foul, friend. Before he reaches the Svetlanans' table Jack lingers near the bar and pulls his comm; he sends a quick text message to Thera: Helmar Nagle VIP passage to Tupolev by personal request of Port Director. Ask many questions. And then to the crew of the Moth. Sauna and VIP suite offlimits until 1800, by order of the Bridge. Expecting special guest. He felt like a shit, but what the hell. He called it first. Besides, 1800 was early enough for the Doc to still take advantage of the amenities. Or anyone else for that matter.

In reply to Thera Santorini (msg #68):

OOC: So terribly frustrating when one types almost an entire post and is confronted by the blue screen of death just before the last line.  Sigh.  Attempt two.

Julianna Biebroeck doesn't seem surprised at Thera's question nor does she seem to mind it, "Mr. Nagel is one of the founding partners of Newcastle Capital Solutions, a private equity firm that specializes in high-yield projects.  He has just finished a business development trip to Espiaux and we are returning to Tupolev.  As you can imagine, Mr. Nagel's time is quite valuable and he is quite eager to get back to Tupolev quickly.  Captain Kurbatkin, with whom it appears your colleague has gone to speak, has assured us he can deliver our party to Tupolev in under seven weeks."  Having established the standard, she then indicates, "But, if your ship can make the journey more expeditiously, then we would be quite interested."

Julianna Biebroeck's companion gets up from their table and joins your gorup at the bar.  He introduces himself, "Anthony Nichol, legal counsel to Mr. Nagel.  Nice to meet you."

At Doc's table,

Casey smiles, "Well technically I'm on shift until 1700, which is why I have to limit this", she taps her wine glass, "but I don't see how a ship tour would keep me fromresponding if something happened."  She gestures towards the table, "Can we do it after lunch?"

Casey continues, "Sounds like you've traveled extensively.  That must be fascinating.  Have you ever settled down or is traveling a lifestyle thing for you?  I could imagine emigrating one day to the new colony on Marsoui, but traveling constantly must be tough."

At Jacques table,

Anna is at the bar at the moment, taking possession of a plate of food.

Peter welcomes Jack to sit, "Have a vodka!  A very fine Svetlanan label."  There are three shot glasses filled to the brim on the table. Kurbatkin slides one towards himself and pushes another in Jacques direction.  Before Peter picks up his glass, he takes a sideways glance at the conservatively dressed Svetlanan family at one of the other tables in the bar.  Perhaps he is checking to see if they are Old Believers.*  He shrugs his shoulders almost imperceptibly and raises his glass to you.  "Your health!" and downs the vodka in a single gulp.

Anna returns with a heaping plate grilled shrimp.  Peter rubs his hands with anticipation and digs in heartily, "Ah Espiaux seafood!  One of my favorite parts of visiting this system."

Between shrimp, Kurbatkin mentions, "You know, I've having trouble keeping the retaining mechanisms on the wrist joints of some of my vacc suits from binding.  Do you have that problem?"

OOC: Jack, rather than role-play a technical discussion, please roll a vacc suit (or Deception if you want to go that route) skill check to establish yourself as an authority on vacc suits in Kurbatkin's eyes.

*Old Believers = A peaceful religious movement widespread on Svetlana.  Unlike the majority of humans in the sector, for whom religion is something like a personal, individual philosophy or ill-defined spirituality, the Old Believers are strongly organized and place the church at the center of the daily activities of its members.  Not anti-technology, the Believers are anti-alcohol, disprove of gambling, and are quite conservative, or even old-fashioned, on many social issues.

A slight smile plays on Danica's lips as she edges toward Thera and the two potential clients.  When she realizes the Julianna is Nagel's personal assistant, her head turns slightly to include what she says more readily.  She has been quietly watching the crowd for a bit, but when Jack excuses himself leaving Thera, who was not at the meeting with the Director, to deal with Mr. Nagel's associates - Dani decides to act.

She offers a hand to Julianna and introduces herself, "Ms. Biebroeck, pleased to meet you.  I'm Danica Moreau - pilot and First Officer of the Gypsy Moth."  She nods to Thera, inclining her head slightly, and noting amiably, "I see that you have met Ms. Santorini, our primary Steward."

"As for availability..." Dani glances down at her dataglove and then taps a few notes and messages, some personal, like to inquire about Newcastle Capital Solutions, and another as a crew-wide heads-up ++Sascha/Kurbatkin also courting Nagel++, "Thera is right, we do have some availability, still.  How many staterooms would you require?"

Dani notes that Anthony has joined the conversation and Danica shifts her position to include him as she ventures, "Three?  For high passage?  And how much cargo space would we need to allocate for all of you?"  Danica offers a firm handshake to Anthony, "First Officer Danica Moreau, Gypsy Moth's pilot.  Well met, Mr. Nichol."

"As for timing," the thin brunette offers, "the Gypsy Moth is a special young lady.  We are geared towards high-speed transport of personnel and goods."  She offers both Julianna and Anthony a genial, if slightly wry, smile as she ups the ante, "Even though our route getting to Tupolev is not yet set, we have been contracted to deliver other cargo there.  So, we will be required to stop in that system in the very near future."  She glances down at her dataglove looking thoughtful for a moment, and then back to Julianna, "Even if we were to go the 'long' way through Svetlana, the Moth would be in Tupolev in less than four and half weeks.  If, instead, our route takes us through Vauclain - then I would say that we'll be there in three weeks..."

Danica purses her lips as Wylins passes by and addresses her.  She gives him a slight curt nod in acknowledgement.

"...  Of course, such expeditious passage comes at a premium." she finishes quickly.  Dani raises her hands and gives Julianna, Anthony and Thera a slightly plaintive gesture.  She inclines her head slightly, "I am afraid that I am being called away.  Please excuse me.  Ms. Santorini," she motions to Thera, "should be able to handle any additional questions or concerns that you may have concerning working with us."  Danica backs away from the group and starts to move towards Wylins.  Her expression is quizzical and slightly concerned - her raised eyebrow connotating that whatever is going must be important.  She taps on her dataglove to Doc and Jack ++Xiu wants to see us again. Now. Heading there.++

"After lunch it is," Jim responded amicably to Casey regarding the ship tour, though thinking to himself he could come up with several things that might keep her from responding to the station if something happened...

He chuckled about traveling extensively.  "Well, I started off aiming to be a scientist, wanting to study a few worlds other than my watery homeworld.  But the Pathfinder's got a hold of me - a somewhat interesting tale, that - and I've spent the last twenty years traveling.  So, yeah, quite extensively.  And sometimes very interesting."

Jim paused to drink, Wylins' approach to the bar finally catching his eye, which he ignored - finding Casey's eyes a far more engaging subject.

"Marsoui - now that is an interesting place - quite beautiful and exotic.  I can definitely picture you there," Jim avoids her other questions, attempting sly flattery as a diversion.

Unfortunately, Danica's message provides a different diversion.

"Ah.  Appears the director of this place requires my presence," adding with a saddened smile to the table as a whole, "Again."

"My apologies," he said as he got up to follow Danica.  To Casey, "I presume you are the only Casey in medical - so I can easily reach you regarding that tour?"

Re: Box 2 (Espiaux) 003-5742

In reply to Dr. Jim D. Jones (msg #74):

Thera grabs the opportunity to join an activity that sounds far more exciting than idle chat, welcoming the doctor's invitation even if she deplores his lack of discretion.

"Excuse me Ms Biebroek, Mr Nichol, I think my colleagues may need my input. We'll meet later to discuss your requirements - should Mr Nagel choose the Moth for his transportation."

She smiles her way out of the conversation and joins her colleagues heading for the Director's office.

Re: Box 2 (Espiaux) 003-5742

Jack makes small tech talk with Kurbatkin, Dani's first text causing his eyebrows to raise slightly. He covers it with more tech talk, focusing mainly on safety concerns.

OOC: 10:24, Today: Jacques Keveloh rolled 10 using 2d6+2 with rolls of 5,3. Vacc Suit only, Kurbatkin chat.

When Dani's second text comes in, Jack looks up to see the gang departing. With another glance at his comm, he stands, saying, "My apologies. There seems to be a sudden issue with Gypsy Moth I need to address. I'll look you up later and we'll continue."

Jack joins the others to report to the station director.
