System and World Data

The large, 120,000km diameter, gas giant Ternate is near the outer edge of the primary star’s habitable zone.  At some point in the fairly recent past, by cosmic reckoning, a comet impacted Ternate, affecting its’ Jovian system.  The oblong object Trask is, in fact, a product of that collision.  The event ejected gaseous and particulate matter from the comet and the gas giant.  The ejected matter was captured by some of the closer moons, like Talos, Duglach, and Tupolev.  Lighter elements, like hydrogen, have since bled off into space, but some of the heavier matter has not yet dissipated from the atmosphere of several moons.  Thus, some of Ternate’s closer moons have thicker atmospheres than one would expect.

Tupolev’s main has only one seventh the luminosity of Sol.  Ternate’s proximity to the star mitigates this somewhat, but stellar surface illumination on the outer face of Tupolev is little more than half Terran norm.  As Tupolev has virtually no axial tilt, it is the interplay of Ternate’s reflected light and stellar light that gives the only variation to what would otherwise be quite monotonous days.  Tupolev’s short orbital period gives about ten hours of daylight, followed by a few hours of twilight becoming darkness for a few hours and the gas giant eclipses the primary, then twilight again.  Habitation-wise, the comet impact was a godsend for Tupolev, as the thickened atmosphere helps protect the planet from Ternate’s radiation and terrestrial weather patterns help mitigate the effects of being tidelocked.  The inner face of Tupolev is a barely tolerable 50-70C, while the outer face is an equally unpleasant -10 to -20C at the equator.  Obviously, most settlement has occurred in the shadow zone between the two faces.  Due to the dense atmosphere, 2.12 bar at sea level, very few people live at lower elevations.  Earth standard atmosphere can be found about 4000m above sea level.

Duglach is a small world.  Like Tupolev, Duglach has a denser atmosphere than one would expect given her size.  Close enough to Ternate to be affected by the gas giant’s magnetosphere and tidal stresses, Duglach is a tectonically unstable moon.  Nevertheless, the Halowon Empire has established a small forward military base on the outer face of the moon.  All facilities on the moon are for military use only and approach to the base without prior approval is restricted.

Unlike her inner sisters, Zhukov captured very little of the comet’s ejecta, just enough to give the moon the faintest trace of an atmosphere.  Local gravity is 0.52G and the outer face is largely covered by ice at moderate and high latitudes.  The moon was never heavily settled, but has hosted small-scale miners since before the Plague.  Due to the moon’s hostile environment, small population, and lack of an industrial base, it suffered heavily during the Plague.  Only the self-reliance of the miners and proximity to Tupolev kept the colony going.  The Halowon Empire has taken an unusually healthy interest in rebuilding the colony’s technology base, considering its small size and limited worth.

Politics

The Halowon Empire helped depose venal and corrupt Waller monarchy two generations ago, and has proven itself committed to bettering the welfare of Tupolev since.  The primary vehicle for this is through vastly improved infrastructure and a completely overhauled education system.  This has made the empire very popular on Tupolev, and local laws are among the least restrictive in the empire.

Culture

The residents of Tupolev consider themselves boisterous and sociable, whereas others view them as braying and provincial.  The Halowon Empire is generally held in high regard, though a few disaffected locals are resentful of Halowoners perceived superiority.  As Tuploev has better developed ties, through trade, with other polities, citizens of the Free Republic are not viewed with the same suspicion here as they would be on other worlds in the empire.

Colonization

There is no official colonization taking place from the Tupolev system, though Tupolev and, to a much lesser extent, Zhukov supply many volunteers for the Empire’s colonization programs elsewhere in the subsector.

Unofficially, Tupolev is the headquarters of the “Children of Nestor” movement.  The Children of Nestor are a Halowon sponsored NGO claiming ancestral rights to land in the neighboring system Nestor.  Their claims are not recognized by the current inhabitants of Nestor, nor by any other major power in the sector.

Economics

Boasting a reasonable industrial base, Tupolev’s manufactured products are not generally considered high quality, but they do have the benefit of being cheap.  Agriculture is not a particularly important segment of planetary exports, as Tupolev farms products are often lower quality and more expensive to produce than those on more suitable nearby worlds, such as Somerset, Svetlana, and Halowon itself.  Primary trading partners include Halowon, Perseus, the Krim Confederation, and the Trinity Cluster.

An imported tree, as Tupolev has no indigenous biosystem, the Bluewood was mistakenly introduced to the planet’s biosphere early in colonization.  This tree thrives in high pressure atmospheres, above 1.8 bar or so, and is exceedingly tough.  It has overrun most of the arable land at lower elevations and has proven difficult and costly to clear.  At higher elevations, wheat is the most prominent crop and wheat products form a large percentage of caloric intake for the locals.

Industries

Centurion Defense Systems – Sole builder of military spacecraft and fighters in the Empire.  Centurion has two facilities on Halowon: Centurion Military Shipyard and Centurion Fighter Yards, which started manufacturing light Orbital defense fighters for planets in the Halowon sector almost two hundred years ago. Centurion maintains a branch office on Tupolev for sustainment of its products there.

Dupont Bank – A public venture, Dupont Bank is the largest financial institution in the Free Republic, with branches on Svetlana, Halowon, Somerset, Tupolev, and Odessa as well.

Hunter Enterprises – An independent security and investigative company which provides discreet guards for most of the larger industries in Halowon space.  Weapons are tightly restricted on most planets in the empire and most companies have little choice but to turn to HE as one of the few organizations whose employees have firearms (handguns only) permits.  Despite its’ near monopoly, HE remains surprisingly affordable and its’ cadre of mostly ex-Army personnel are well trained, courteous, and professional.  It is speculated that the company is really run by the DSS to keep an eye on large corporations.

IntelComp – IntelComp makes mainframe computers for the Empire and a few for private sector as well.

Macklin Petrochem – As many of the worlds in the Empire rely heavily on petroleum products for fuel and plastics, MP is one of the largest and most successful industries in the subsector.  MP manufactures over ninety percent of all materials used for chemical and petrochemical applications in the empire with large operations on Ashton and Somerset.  Suffolk is also recognized as having huge petroleum reserves.

Neu Bauer Fahrzueg Fabrik – As the name suggests, NBFF began making agricultural vehicles on Halowon in 5637.  It later expanded into ground car and tracked vehicle production with factories on Halowon and Tupolev.

Rabenshild Bank – One of the largest private banks in the sector, Rabenshild has carved a niche for itself in financing interstellar industrial ventures.

Shipyards

Tupolev Down has no shipyards per se, but several independent ship service companies can effect minor repairs on ships downworld.

Tupolev is serviced by two starports.  The older, seedier Northport is but a shadow of its former self.  It handles lower value traffic from lesser worlds.  On the other side of the city of Lansing, less than thirty kilometers away, Emperor Klem Jarrett Memorial (EKJM) Downport handles almost all of Tupolev’s passenger traffic and most of the more important freight.

Military

Four 400ton Executioner class SDBs are based in the Tupolev system.  Additionally, two wings of aging Centurion fighters are based on Tupolev itself.  The Halowon navy also maintains a small, forward base on the moon Duglach to support patrols of the gas giant.

The Halowon Imperial Army has two complete divisions on Tupolev, while the Colonial Guard also has several regiments.
