OOC thread: Into Falan!
I figured, with a new thread, we could use a new OOC thread.

Have at, everyone! If I haven't laid out things clearly or have forgotten to address something you think needs addressing, let me know in here, please! Thanks for your patience as we got to this new scene.

I hope that Merlin's little step in helps with the good cop, bad cop, type of thing. I debated much on even doing anything, but in the end I thought it might be a good thing to play up the assassin/killer reputation that they had already decided to give him.

I used it as an excuse to tranform Galen into a Giant Ham, which gives +3 to pontificating and milking the giant, celestial cow.

EDIT: I've been watching a lot of Babylon 5, lattly. Does it show?

For Lady B

Segev Stormlord:
Sir Vaniel glares icily at Merlin. "It could be, Sir Clavien, that this man is one of those with such motives, seeking to cast blame aside. He certainly seems eager to resort to violence and get the 'innocent farmers, women, and children' killed as we try to defend ourselves from their ostensible rescuers."

It should be obvious since your entire command is still alive that Merlin doesn't/didn't want them dead ;-)

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
I have had somebody voice interest in joining the game. He has not sent an RTJ yet, or I'd introduce him under whatever name he'll use before a character is assigned, but before I allow him to join the game, I want to make sure you guys, the players, are okay with a new addition.

I do not know this person, myself; Beatrix's player pointed him at the game, so I'll let said player vouch for the new guy if he likes.

The current thought is that he'd like to play a heroic mortal merchant who does business in the south and east.

I have not yet done any work on integrating him into the plot of the game, because I want to know if the rest of you are okay with a new player joining. Also, I figure, when I get the RTJ from him, you guys can give input on party dynamics to him, if you're at least tentatively okay with giving somebody a chance.

Thoughts? Yea/nay?

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
Sorry it took so long for me to post again, guys. I have nothing to serve as an adequate excuse for this.

Although I *do* have some excuses that may serve to amuse, instead. For instance, "We both came to an agreement so suddenly and quickly. All of my years of internet arguments never prepared me for this, and I was left stunned and dumbfounded. For ten days."

Anyway.

The idea behind having one of us oversee the resettlement is kind of obvious (we want to make sure the armed soldiers don't do anything unpleasant to the unarmed freemen). The reason I chose Aya is twofold.

First, Aya's player is still feeling down. This gives her an excuse to be out of scene while he's away from game, and as soon as he's feeling sufficiently awesome to play the Wind God Girl again (which is hopefully soon - we miss ya, man!), Aya can just fly back to where we are and rejoin the game.

Second, the soldiers are already terrified of Aya. Because, y'know, badass Lunar Martial Artist. This means she'll be a sufficient detriment to any bad behavior by her mere presence.

Lemme know if there's any objections. :3

No objections, but reason #2 is a little off. Her 'reputation' is based on what Merlin has said to the officers. They think he is an Air DB or elemental godblood, but he has referred to her as even more powerful. The only thing she has had to do was be perceptive and intimidating. ;-0

No. :|

Okay, kidding. Do you mean he's found the reincarnation/recycling of a guy he knew in a previous life? Because that would be kind of cool. It's one of those things that happens in Exalted, really.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
My usual tactic when I am trying to develop characters and figure out what threads to pursue is to have plenty of IC conversation, whether PC-to-PC or PC-to-NPC. This is clearly not working, as I don't respond fast enough, which causes the players to respond less often, and it spirals outward until people don't even check the game for a fortnight.

So, as I don't want the game to die, I ask of you, my players, what do you want to see happen? What can I do to pick up the pace and interest? I get the impression that part of the problem is that people aren't sure what TO respond to, so what can I do to help with that?

Do people want to continue any of the conversations in this current thread? If so, feel free. I will be putting up a new one this afternoon, as we arrive at Oredol Castle. There's one "event" planned there - for which I would like everybody to give me some Perception+Awareness rolls, with any Charms they care to use - and then we can move on to Watch Hill. No sense dragging on travel in OOC time, since not much seems to be happening there.

Please, let me know of any issues or problems you have so I can address them and try to get this game back up and running!

Yay! Interaction!

(For future reference, lying is actually something the liar doesn't roll. He just says whatever he wants, true or false. It is a Perception+Investigation roll by somebody who wants to detect whether a person is telling the truth or not, vs. a target number determined by the liar's Manip+Socialize - I will have to look up the exact rule, but I think it's just (Manipulation+Socialize)/2 - to see if he can successfully discern truth from fiction.

Not an issue here, unless people want to continue evoking mechanics for this discussion.)

I am curious, Galen, why Manip.+Larceny here?

Ah. Thank you for clarifying that for me.

The main reason I rolled it was to tease any investigation into Galen's 'peculiarities' for comical hijinks. ;P

Segev Stormlord:

Larceny was described as being used in con-games and to have a poker-face in gambling, so I thought that it could be applicable to lying in general.

As an OOC informative note, Merlin's puzzlement over people using Bronze should strike most people in the setting as weird. Iron is rare, and steel usually poor quality and probably RARER. Exalted is, for all its semi-medieval trappings, a largely bronze-age civilization at the time we're playing in.

At least, the metals most often used are bronze and its components. (Artifacts using magical materials are even rarer than iron, certainly, but given that the party are Exalts, it isn't surprising if there is a weird excess of magical materials in their experiences.)

Merlin is used to the North, where Feather Steel is uncommon as is Iron just because their materials strengths are necessary for Airships and Iceboats. Bronze being far to soft and heavy. Also, the the First Age likely had a lot more 'technologically' better metals and compounds than mere bronze, which is why Merlin is all puzzled.

Sevastian is wondering if Leaves believes that our country is not directly involved in the people disappearing and the issue that she was having with Ma Ha Suchi and his beast men.

The original question in the farm house was "is Trademeet involved?" we said no, she said she would determine that herself.

Alright. I'm sort-of waiting on somebody answering Silent Thunder Leaves's query as to why they're HERE, and then, unless anybody objects, I'll move on to the next scene. We'll be getting Alistr in possibly as early as next scene, and Mason in shortly thereafter if we can't squeeze him in at the same time.

I am, however, going home to my parents' house for Thanksgiving week in just a few minutes, so my responses may be a touch slower than I would like. I will still strive to post at least once a day!

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Mainly just posting to make sure people are still checking in. I understand how impending holidays will get in the way of rp time. When do people think they'll be back and ready to post regularly?

Or, am I not providing enough to spark any sort of conversation, or have I missed/failed to respond to anybody?

I will seek to make something more happen to spur things along soon, if that's what it takes. (I admit, I've not been paying as much thought to this as I should in the last couple days; for that, I'm sorry.)

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I know I need to pick up my own pace a bit here, but I'm not TOO worried 'cause, as I said, I know it's the holidays. From Thanksgiving to New Years is usually a rough time for gaming, period.

We've all been a bit lax. I will seek to have a "moving things forward" post IC by the start of next week. If you have time, feel free to continue conversations until then. I will do my best to make the plot-inducing post leave room for them to continue as well, just in case there is stuff left to discuss.

I am not forgetting this game; it's just been...hecktic. I'm done with graduation stuffs and I'm now home for the holidays ("home" being parents' home, really, in this case), which makes my time...spotty. But I'll make time this week to get some things together and post that IC post by the end of next Tuesday, I promise. (I might be driving back to Rolla on Monday, or I'd promise by the end of Monday.)

And, actually, Galen, your post gives me an idea. I won't post IC tonight (I'm too tired to be sure I wouldn't screw something up), but I'll try to get something answering you up tomorrow!

Not to be a pesky hound of a GM, but I notice several people have logged on in the last day but nobody's responded in a while. Are people waiting for me to do something? I'm currently waiting for any of several PCs to respond to various NPCs who've spoken to them; if that's not clear or I'm not giving enough to act on, please let me know and I'll go edit or post more to try to spark some interest. I actually do have a plan for this scene, but I don't want to turn it into one long narration of events with the PCs as mere spectators.

Okay. I have achieved one of my two goals with the current thread. Should I move "getting the new players introduced" to another thread's goals, or do we want to continue this one for a bit to have some conversation? I don't want to cut anybody off if there's something they want to discuss, but I've noticed it's trailed off in posting, so if people are just out of things to say, I'll get another thread up tomorrow.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
Alright, in the interests of not having multiple players sitting out because they have nothing to do, I am going to open up a bit about what I'm trying to achieve in the next scene, so we can all get on the same page and make sure it works out!

I need to get the two new PCs talking to the group as a whole - or at least what players are still paying attention. In order to facilitate this, I'm going to run Beatrix's scene with the Duke in the background and let time elapse. I am suggesting that Mason conveniently suggest a couple hours from now as the time he can meet. There are a good half-dozen taverns and inns in Oredol's surrounding town (really more of a small city); if Mason or somebody else wants to make up a name, feel free. If not, I'll make up something.

If a tavern or what-all is not suitable for introducing PCs to the group and having discussions, I'm open to other suggestions. Regardless, I'd like the next scene to have Beatrix having just finished her little thing with the Duke. There are one or two conversation threads to be wrapped up in this thread, and then I'll open a new one.

Thoughts, objections, suggestions, etc.?

Oh, and feel free to keep your conversations that are currently happening in the current IC thread going; I'm just posting this to try to get us back on the same page and make sure the next scene I write can achieve the goal of "getting new PCs into the party."

I'm trying to get a response if this effect all splats, or just Exalted. (I know the text starts by saying 'Exalted,' but the writers have been in a bad habit of using it as a neutral term for a long time now.)

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
The Fair Folk section on "Glamour Combos" still reads as it did before. It says they are "able to construct Combos much as Exalted do, but have little need to," and then goes on to describe how they can spontaneously make combos by adding 1g to the cost of the combo activation.

But, since they do it "much as Exalted do," they now do it spontaneously and have the option to spend 1g when activating them to no effect! But at least the rules' wording gives Raksha free combos, just like Exalted, even if Glamour Combos make no sense now.

Yes, I think so.  Because heroes can discuss that sort of thing in public and get away with it, or something.

Also, Mason's plan will probably take three days, which is why I, the player, and sorta against it.  While it's an awesome plan, three days in game is a lot of real life time unless we do some fast-forwarding/time-skipping.

Well, there's only the teenaged boy and the twenty-ish girl serving the food here. The tavern owner is probably around, too. No guests, though.

I'm sure none of them are part of this spy network. >_> <_<

I have one more major event that will happen on screen tonight, when you guys are done in the tavern. I leave it up to you if you want to "do something" on screen while Mason's plan unfolds, want to skip Mason's plan as something that will take too long, or let Mason do his thing while everybody else either does their own off-screen thing or cools their heels in three days' downtime while Mason...does whatever. That last will allow fast forwarding to the first major...complication...in Mason's plan (if any. No our lovable ST would never do that. However I, the surly Smith with a big hammer, am on stand by just in case of such an event. Many happy skull bashings to the spy ring later and we have agents on the inside and our people back. Oh wait back bear totem. I am not supposed to do that.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
Well, I can simply tell you guys OOC what Mason's plan is.

The first day is dedicated to learning the ins and outs of the castle and studying the various maids on staff.  He'll only want to ply his trade on one or two.  More than that and he's spreading himself too thin.  Mouse-form will be very good for this, as will other small, unnoticed animals.
He'll spend the second day discretely meeting with his maid(s) of choice.  Glance-Oration Technique (I'm a scary mouse, go run over there in fear) (I seem to be lost but am too noble to ask for directions; come help me) can help isolate the maid temporarily so that Mason In Disguise (yay Changing Plumage Mastery plus Int+Larceny and New Friend Aroma) can work on building an Intimacy in the poor maid.  That night, Mason can work the information out of the maid(s) during/around other activities (yay Stamina 4) using Falling Leaf Distraction so they don't even realize they're parting with the info.
On the third day, having heard information, while the maid(s) is/are distracted with chores, he'll root about in their rooms for any tangible evidence.  Or even the rooms of other maids that they have let slip might have some useful info.  If it takes longer than the three days, his cover will likely be blown because someone will ask around about who this mysterious fellow is.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
Mason should probably discuss his plan with us IC. If not at the inn, then elsewhere is fine. The thing is, tho, Bea already has enough information that he could skip what you have slated for day 1 due to her use of assorted Solar Social-Fu charms in the castle (it's how she even knows about the spy ring in the first place).

Edit: Or, in the interest of saving time, we can discuss it OOC and say we discussed it IC.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
He's not going to explain it IC until afterwards when he can do a "This is how I did it" speech.  It's more dramatic, and if it screws up a little bit, then he can still pretend afterwards that it all went according to plan.  Also, this lets him prove that he can do this by himself and thus is useful to the team.  He doesn't want to be stuck on guard duty forever.

Come to think of it, he'll probably have to have someone hold onto his bow for him while he does this.  A dashing, well-to-do man uses swords, not bows.  It's an expensive bow, though, so he doesn't just want to leave it lying around.

Posting to move stuff along.

Also, he really doesn't trust leaving his bow in the guard barracks, so he's leaving it with the party.  His perfectly ordinary looking bow.  No one in the party can pull it, though, so he's not really worried.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
I am not terribly happy with the RP I've done recently in this game.

I originally thought it would be 'kew' to play up Galen's low Temperance and have 'em get drunk, but my handling of it was stupid and lame. Then I wanted to introduce the neat creature, and it feels forced & confusing. I think I've annoyed at least some of the players with it, almost derailing the session, when I wanted to try and stir up some action. I've been holding back from posting as I felt like it would further derail what the other PCs where trying to work out, and I feel everyone went in a much better direction.

I'd like to see if I can salvage some of this and contribute in a positive way after this RP debatical. Since I've knocked my own PC out, would it be cool if I played the creature trying to be helpful to the PC's and get them to the strange light quickly?

Or would it be better if perhaps the critter just helps Galen wake up?

To Galen:

Ouch. I'm sorry to hear things aren't panning out like you'd hoped - I know what it's like to take a gamble on a character idea and not have it pan out. If there's anything we can do to help, or any questions you want to ask (like whether we really are annoyed - I'm not, and Bea is fine as long as Galen knows when to say 'let's get dangerous'), go ahead and ask. We're basically doing cooperative storytelling here, so hey, let's cooperate. :)

As to the adorable critter, I'd be fine either way, really. It's apparently important enough that if we all end up trouping out to go investigate this light, Bea isn't going to leave it unattended - she's just genre savvy enough to know that's asking for trouble. That could be your 'in' if you want it.

Alternately, you could play an already-sobering Galen, whose personality is more serious and professional while he's in 'my head feels awful and I am never going to drink again' mode, which might last an hour or three. After going through this sort of thing enough times, he may even decide to buy up his Temperance.

'let's get dangerous.' That's an excellent attitude to take with this Character.

Yeah. I'll try that out and see if it helps. I'm glad I didn't give this version of Carabas the mute Flaw/Mutation.

I think that would go well for the original reason I had the PC drinking. Galen's one friend has gone missing, and it trouble the fool. Screwing up a few times (as long as I don't disrupt the game) sounds like a good vehicle to start buying up Virtues.

You didn't annoy me to be clear I just assumed Galen was a drunk. I've dealt with those in real life. It can be fun if you handle it properly. As for derailing nah didn't seem that way to me. The intro of the creature seemed a might forced, but it was sensible.

It just seems RL is out to get all of us this month. I'll be more responsible as an ST hopefully as early as Saturday. That will, if all goes well, be my first full day in my new place. I have no idea what I may need to do to get all "basic necessities" that I may well forget in my move, but hopefully that will NFL be an all-day endeavor.

I am writing this on my iPhone because my Internet at my old residence - in Whig I am now spending my last night (to my mild sorrow; this has been a good house to me) is being transferred to the new residence of my one housemate staying in Rolla, and he needs the modem there bright and early for them to do it. Tonight is also his first night in his new place.

So it's ultimately good: I'm moving on with my life and getting a real job that will let me pay off my student loans and advance my carreer and such. But you know how it is with the end of an era: bittersweet. Still, at this point, I am mostly just tired and ready to be done with all this packing and cleaning. It will be nice when Friday is over and I finally get to spend my first night in my new place!

Still posting from my phone due to no 'net access. Because getting the house cleaned out took way more time today than I expected, I am staying either at my one housemate-who-is-staying-in-Rolla's new place or at a motel here rather than trying to go to my parents' tonight. This puts me a day behind expected schedule and thus I won't be around until Sunday most likely.

Another Update:

Time Warner and FedEx have been jerking me around all week, and I thus haven't been able to get my modem. I have some really crappy wifi that is working for the moment, but I haven't had the time nor energy to actually devote to this game that you people deserve. I really, really hope to have internet by tomorrow, and time to work on getting the game advanced.

For now, if everybody who's still paying attention to the game would post in this thread or a private message to me to let me know you're still interested and tell me what, if anything, you need from me to get you better involved, I would appreciate it.

I had hoped there'd be some conversation "on the road" here, but I either set up the scene wrong or didn't provide enough to discuss or something. I really hope I've not killed the game with my net-deadness, but I understand if people have lost interest.

If you're still interested, though, we need to figure out what we can do to get people proactively posting. What can I provide you to act off of, react to, or otherwise help you have something to do or say? I promise to try to post tonight if I have any responses at all, even if I'm still 'net-less. If I have 'net, I'll try posting tonight even with no responses.

I really am sorry, everybody, for failing in my duties as ST these past couple of weeks.

In specific to Merlin: Good God, man! I hope this is a temporary situation? Either way, don't worry too much about the game, I think. Everyone else: if there's anything you'd like me to set up, respond to, or otherwise put in place for you to give your characters something to do, let me know.

I'll be honest, my big fear is that even if I just fast forward to meeting with Duke Lothus, people still won't feel like they have anything to respond to. I'm not sure what to do about it. Any suggestions are welcome, even if it's just "why I have not been able to respond to X that's happened."

Thanks!

I'm going to leave the latest post for a couple of days to give people a chance to react if they want. If I don't get any responses, I will assume that the party crests the hill and describe what they see thereafter. If people would rather not respond here, and just move to that, please let me know!

I didn't go right into it because I wasn't sure if people had any odd approaches they wanted to take.

Hrm. I still seem to be failing to write scenes in which all feel engaged.

Most of you don't seem to like talkies, which are...what I'm best at. I will try to advance beyond this one quickly. What kinds of scenes do you want to play in? What do you see your characters being active at?

I am fine with talkie scenes as long as Merlin is actually not hiding in the shadows being all Night Caste like. Merlin is an intrinsically difficult character to play to sometimes. Now, what you have been doing has been very entertaining to me. I am loving the Plot and look forward to tracing all of its various forks and turns!

What I am trying to get at is that some of us are much more suited to non-social settings, but we make due as we are able and understood going into things that we would get less of a spotlight than others might. Based on your GMing style I started having Merlin be more like James Bond than the ultimate ninja-spy. I even went so far as to purchase a social charm ;-)

For me, just keep up the good work I am enjoying.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
In reply to Merlin (msg # 195):

Thanks. I work best, I think, when I'm able to bounce things off of people. Writing stories is difficult precisely because I'm effectively talking to myself. I'm not trying to hound people who don't have something to say, I just want to make sure that I'm providing a game they feel they can engage.

Glad you're enjoying it. I will endeavor to have a bit more places for your clandestine snooping. The rogue's dilemma is a real one, but at least marginally well-handled via PbP games because of the ability to split time and re-stitch it as needed.

Anyway, my question still stands; I'm not pleading or self-flagellating or anything, just...asking. I suppose a better way to put it is this: If ever you feel you can't engage in a scene, please let me know either in the OOC thread or in a private message so we can work out a better way to get your PC involved in a fun way. If you would like to see more of a certain kind of scene, likewise let me know, please.

This is just an ongoing request, not a "the sky is falling" worrywort post. I recognize my GMing style leans a bit strongly towards the talkies, and I know that's not the ONLY kind of scene, so I just want to make sure my players are able to, well, play. As opposed to being reduced to mere observers by a lack of stuff for their PCs to do.

Again, I'm not complaining nor fishing for compliments; if you're enjoying the game, I'm glad. I just get worried when players go silent. I work best with communication, even if it's just OOC. So feel free to comment or speculate or leave suggestions if you have any. (Especially if it's of the 'can we move this along' variety, so I know we don't have a whole lot of people waiting for somebody else to make the next move. I've seen more games die to that...)

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
Nah, no need to alter your character if you're enjoying him as-is.

Honestly, I think for my own needs as a gamer, if people would just post in the OOC thread when they don't have anything to post IC, that would be sufficient. I'm used to, in IRC games, at least, chatter and speculation and player plotting in the OOC channel.

I'm not saying you have to engage in any or all of that, just talking out what I'm used to. I love discussing games and stuff OOC as much as IC, but I know the forum format can make conversation difficult at best, so if that's not enjoyable for others, all I really will ask is a once-a-week minimum "I'm still here" post, maybe with what you're looking forward to in the game. While that may sound like a plea for ego-stroking, what I'm really sneakily planning to use such things for is to make sure I deliver on what people are anticipating.

In short... if you're having fun, that's really all I want as a GM. From the standpoint of a fellow player - in the sense that the GM is playing a game, too, just in a slightly different role - I just like to talk about the game periodically.

Now, I think the only PC whose player is still active I'm waiting on for the die roll is Mason. I'll continue the scene as soon as he rolls. Or this weekend, at the latest.

(All that said, if you guys want to discuss anything, game-related or just talking about your characters or even something else entirely, please DO feel free to chatter in the OOC thread. It's what it's hear for.)

Well I think there is a vast plot of disenfranchised gods that just couldn't keep up with the times or were cast aside in the past because they became to wounded when cities were sacked or destroyed. 'gods' have children and such as well.

If the old 'city father' of Trademeet was forced out or replaced (s)he would definitely plot to get it back somehow. Using the guild, the Beastmen, and Falan is either some really awesome and time intensive circumstance or a conflagration of a Sidereal level manipulation.

I did look around a little, but avoided reading too much into past or ongoing events. I prefer to learn things In Character and I dislike spoilers :p

So, all I'd want, assuming no one has an issue with me joining, is knowing what the party would want covered.

I'm somewhat particular to the Night Caste, but I'm pretty flexible.

Plus, I was thinking a focus on Medicine and Craft (water) (and maybe wood). You don't have a healer, do you?

Edit: Also, I'm new in RPOL in general, so any configuration or interface tips are welcome :)

My last Twilight PC had an ego based on Dark Schneider, a Hand of the Great Maker, a Protoshimaic Vortex, and made liberal use of Wyld Shaping Technique.

He once needed an expert opinion on an alchemical substance, so he created one. ("Useful mortal" is one of the things it can canonically do, at least by the Core rules, which is what we were going off of at the time.)

I'm not certain I'll have the chance to socket a ProtoShinmaic Vortex in a Hand of the Great Maker (how many did he have anyway?), but I think I'll go by the assumption that I won't be doing such anytime soon. :p

Also, I'm thinking less craft / loremaster, more healer.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
In reply to Caldeon (msg # 212):

I meant at least 1 dot in stealth. I find it aggravating in the extreme to have stealthless companions as a super stealthy night caste. With at least 1 dot in stealth you can generally expect an exalt to be able to throw 4 dice, 7 if it really matters to channel a virtue. That is enough to defeat most mortals. On the other hand, characters without 1 stealth gain a -2 to their dex (min essence) and all but have to channel JUST to get past a single guard on patrol. So, I have insisted that all (when the game was originally put together and new players as well) have at least 1 dot in stealth.

Thus the characters can participate in my characters specialty even as he is forced to participate in the talking, socializing, and open battlefield fighting that the others specialize in :-)

I get your point, will be getting Stealth :)

However...
quote:
gain a -2 to their dex

is this a house rule?

I am not 100% certain, but I am pretty sure Exalts don't get the -2 penalty on untrained abilities like mortals do.
Not that I mind either case, just asking.

Edit: Found it.
quote:
One  common  penalty  is  for  acting  without  the  proper  Ability. The player of anyone who is not Exalted loses two dice  from any roll based on an Ability in which she does not have  any dots.

Hi, Caldeon! And welcome to the game, here's hoping you enjoy it. I play Bea, a Zenith and our resident social tank and nosey investigator type. She can fight fairly decently if called upon to do so. Alsoshelikesmoney.

Alistr is a blacksmith by reputation, so we probably have at least some aspects of crafting handled if you don't want to do that. He's also a Lunar, which kind of means he's good in a fight by default.

Craft(Water) is of course wonderful and much welcomed. Sevastian seems to have dropped the game, so we need a new cook! Very important. ::nods::

Healing is always nice, although we haven't actually been in any fights yet. If nothing else it fits a good character niche - healer types are generally welcome everywhere just on principle.

As an aside to Merlin; I didn't know solo'ing the stealthy bits was bothering you so much. If you want, Bea might be able to accompany you. She's got six dice for stealth on account of having grown up with Nancy Drew antics. Mason might also be able to tag along; I have no idea what he's good at or not, but he seems like a shifty guy who can't be trusted, so he's probably good at stealth!

I need to know what the plans are at this stage: Merlin is going out with Deen to help scout out the beastmen. Who else is going with the foot force and/or is flying? Of those not going, are they waiting at the castle, cooling their heels, or are they going out on their own to do anything else? I know talk was made of "handling" the people who Merlin spied on yesterday.

Same here, I was nowhere near the events.

More or less half a world away. :p

I'm perfectly fine with a new thread. Azalea (and Ned?) should be able to tag along anywhere (Az would try to stick with the only other exalts she's seen), unless the party asks her to leave. If the party splits up, she'd likely stick with Beatrix.

Good, good. I got very lucky and did not get the brunt of it, but it is very bad in some areas around me.

Non-union utility workers from other states who came to help are being blocked by union utility workers. Generators, food & water stations in NYC were being reserved for a marathon instead of the survivors (until recently when the Times rated the Mayor out), and the NYC mayor turned away the National Guard despite looting. Craaaaazy stuff.

Is there anything I can do to help?

In Texas.

Ready for a new thread. I am uncertain what the point in heading off in the glider is at this point, since the enemy is so very far away and they can see things in such detail. Following the bandits or the pair of riders might be more fruitful.

I would not object to a new thread. Bea wants to hear what Merlin thinks (and for that matter, so do I), but that can likely be done just as well in a new thread as the current, so either way's great.

Also in Texas, so no Sandy here. Had a rough couple of days for other reasons, but that seems all behind now.

I'm sorry.

The situation as I understand it: You guys, as a party (and with Prince Deen and young Ned in tow) have tracked down the two who were talking to the Guild when Merlin tracked them, and who might have sicced the bandits on the caravan that you guys rescued on your way to Watch Hill.

As you were outside their camp, a plan was devised, and Galen sneaked in to act on it. The chimes set up around the camp started blaring in cacophony when Galen got inside, despite his very sneaky movement.

This is how things are right this moment.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
I kind of think we've done all we can do here. Fast forwarding would be good.

Bea was thinking to take these people to the nearest clean water. We may need to go rescue the Duke and his guys, though, so she might have someone take them there while we go to the Duke. Or we could split; Azalea go with them to make sure they recover, Merlin and maybe Bea go after the Duke?

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!

Azalea would definitely not leave the village if she believed they would get sick again quickly (compassion 5 does that).

Moving them to someplace with clean water would be the fastest solution right now, and it would let us follow towards the dates :p

It's entirely plausible for the villagers to get on a cart or two and follow the party as they go, and we can drop them off at a river crossing, right? :)

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
You can certainly load them into a cart and take them with you; there isn't a river crossing between here and the army that Merlin saw. Remember, this is a waystation placed here in part because there's no other major civilization (or good place to stop for a night) within easy travel distance.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
Beatrix has some npcs following her that can get them to safety while we move on. One's a dragonblooded who can likely follow any medical directions Azalea gives him, so long as they don't require anything supernatural (not because he's a medic himself, but because he's good at following directions).

As to the other bit... hmmm. A magic illness causing an excess of harmful energy? Does this mean we're dealing with ...hot dates?

Whee! :)

I get the last bit, right? 40?

In which case, Azalea gets Wound-Cleansing Meditation (8xp), to be able to get rid of that pesky aggravated damage, too.
And I believe she'd be going over those basic katas she has learned in her free time, so is a Martial Arts increase from 2 to 3 (that's 3xp) viable?

Just to be in the clear, what's the stance on increasing Essence?

I wouldn't mind Science of Mutation sooner or later :p

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
Azalea can spend up to as many exp as everybody else, so 110 if I'm not misremembering my own math. Total, not "additional" to whatever she already had. Training times are enforced, so make sure to keep track of when you've got downtime. You can work on things in down time for which you do not yet have the exp, and then dump the exp on them when you get it, as well.

Essence-increase does require meditation and focus. It will likely require extended downtime without a lot of stunting to focus your actions on screen on the training of it for the appropriate period. I will strive to help make sure it's feasible, though, so do keep reminding me about it when you want to focus on it.

Unless the demon has some sort of special power regarding names, giving names to it is harmless. Same with just about any Spirit or Exalt or even Thaumaturge. Names are mostly just words, unless something has been done to specifically lend them significance. (For instance, an Eclipse Oath might lend one significance regarding the oath-taker's actions; perhaps they swear never to hear it (bad idea), or to obey the person who rightfully holds it, or to never speak it, or...)

I am treating it as round robin for now, but do not mind shifting to ticks at any point. Ticks can be tricky to run in PbP, but I fully understand that some builds exploit the tick system and are harmed if it is ignored. So let me know if you feel you need them.

And we're still at 2.0, because 2.5 upgrading is even more mechanically crunchy and unless we get into a situation that is degenerate under 2.0, I don't think it worth the effort. Again, however, if there are pleas from the players to make the change, we can.

Waitwaitwait... what?

When I started I remember asking and getting the answer that we are using 2.5

That's why I have no Combos, and I've used at least two Charms at once without them multiple times by now. O.o

No problem with rounds rather than ticks. Unless someone can consistently go at speed 3, going twice for each action of someone at speed 6, it doesn't make much of a difference within a normal combat's timespan anyway.

For convenience:

Exalts need not spend experience to purchase or create Combos, nor spend Willpower to activate them. Characters may simultaneously activate as many of their Charms as they desire, so long as the combination of powers activated obeys the rules for creating Combos (for example, characters still may not activate two Simple Charms simultaneously, nor activate another Charm at the same time as a Charm that lacks the Combo-OK keyword).

Sorry, I should have clarified when you guys asked if he had dematerialized. The central sentence describing his state and position in the last post is:

quote:
With that, the Blood of the Forge's head vanishes to all save those who can see spirits; to them, it drops through the pulsating mass of limbs and down into the ground.

Specifically, what I was trying to get across is that he dematerialized and retreated into the ground. Which is not impossible to contend with, but does require more than simply passing through the dematerialized spirit's physical location as if it were in the air.

Aw, thanks. That is reassuring. I always worry when I go for too long without responding that I'm ruining everybody's time. I know that's silly of me, but I do try to take GM responsibilities seriously.

Believe it or not, I have an overarching plot - of the "things the players will discover and probably need to deal with" variety more than the "here's how the story will go" - that's fairly extensive. It just takes some building towards.

Meanwhile, we have the Beastmen, the Guild, Falan, Trademeet, and Sidereals clashing over this tiny West Virginia-sized portion of Creation.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
It seems this scene has ground a bit to a halt. Perhaps we should take OOC stock: what is left to accomplish here, and what do you, the players, want to see next?

Basically, the IC situation as it stands is that you did manage to stop most of the soldiers from being converted into demons, but not all of them. Fortunately, the Duke and his son are amongst the saved. You've driven the Blood of the Forge into retreat, and the handful of 1st circle demons that remain are not instantly hostile, though it could turn back into a fight very quickly if you wanted it to.

Harrenhal - which is what these are - are basically volcano-dwarves with all of the manners of old norse dwarves. Which is to say: none at all. They're rude, crude, socially unacceptable craftsmen who like a good brawl and have lechery on par with a sailor just released for shore leave after a year at sea.

Pleasant people.

Well, Azalea won't be pursuing the continuation of a fight, and I don't think demonification is something treatable (well, for now, because Solar Healer), so covalescence sounds appropriate for those saved.

One more reason to practice those martial arts basics in her free time, though.

I'm not sure we *can* kill them quickly... but it would be bad to let them roam freely, given their, erm, appetites. So I agree that we should probably make the effort.

I think Bea might be drawing enough attention to make the mortals safe for now, so we should make use of that.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
If you want to kill them, they will fight to survive. It is a valid option. It might be the only option, particularly if your goal is complete removal of their potentially hazardous influence with no further risks. Those with Occult 2 or more can be aware that demons are alien, but not essentially hostile. Depending on what their progenitor left "programmed" in their heads and what their essential natures are, there might be non-combat solutions. Of course, those non-combat solutions may be inadequate, depending on your goals.

I'm neither trying to encourage nor discourage combat, but rather to give enough information that you guys can make your own determinations as to what you want to achieve and try to come up with ways to do so. Combat may or may not be the best way to achieve your ends.

*sigh* I think Bea's player is not liking the play-by-post format as other things have begun to demand attention. At least, I think that's what's going on. I'm trying to mastermind a solution. I could run it with just two, I suppose. I sadly lack the time to devote to any sort of regularly scheduled game I would run, right now, or I'd offer to try taking it to IRC or something.

I think perhaps the best thing to do, at times like these, is to do a bit of NPC'ing of the character to move the story along. At this stage, Azalea definitely has the talents and magics to cure those who still live. Feel free to narrate the next few things you guys want to get done, and Merlin, if you want to discuss distracting the beastmen, by all means shift the scene to that discussion, whether with PCs or NPCs; everyone else, feel free to narrate your actions between "now" and whenever the scene gets shifted to; you've got until nightfall before, if nothing else happens, the Duke will start ordering people to move, realizing they're running short on time.

In game-time, it has been roughly six hours since Beatrix went to bed. I believe Exalted regain 8 motes per hour of sleep, 4 per hour of "rest," and 2 per hour of strenuous activity. If I am misremembering, feel free to correct me.

I think Azalea's tired sitting-and-giving-direction counts as "rest" while Merlin's scouting is "strenuous," I leave it to you to determine how many of those 6 hours were spent in each activity and how much, if any, was spent actually sleeping.

I think a good plan here might be to have Merlin take to the air and make a strike at the leader of the pack. Take him out and the rest will become more manageable. He should be able to do that without too much risk of reprisal; from the descriptions all he might have to worry about would be thrown javelins or rocks. :)

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
That little OOC comment to the river thread confused me.

According to the house rules and 2.5 errata application, you have posted the following:

quote:
Regarding 2.5

I will be slow in implementing 2.5 changes. If anybody has anything they WANT to use from it, call my attention to it. Particularly Charms that have been altered.

The two things we WILL be using as of right now are the modifications to Combos and to weapons, minimum damage, and the costs of PDs.

and

quote:
Minimum damage in 2.5

Minimum damage is now 1, unless a weapon has the "O"(verwhelming) tag. All Artifact weapons have been modified such that they have at least O2.

So I assume you forgot? :p
Austringer

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
The original rulebook is slightly unclear on this topic but seems to imply that an attack's minimum damage value is the least of the post-Soak dice, the weapon's minimum (i.e., Overwhelming) damage, or the wielder's Essence in one place.  In another, it implies that minimum damage cannot drop below Essence.  The Scroll of Errata attempts to clarify this to:

quote:
The minimum damage value of attacks not absorbed by Hardness is one die, rather than the attackerís Essence rating. Attacks made with weapons possessing the Overwhelming tag ... may produce higher minimum damage values.

So it looks as if the former interpretation is the one the Scroll of Errata (and Seg) adopted.

Note that this appears to change the damage of the owl-Lunar's biting Austringer as he flips past it (though not significantly enough to really matter in this particular case) but doesn't appear to change the fact that Austringer couldn't even scratch the enemy Lunar through its Invulnerable Moonsilver Carapace, which not only boosted its soak to 29L (easily soaking most attacks) but also explicitly sets minimum damage to zero dice (I assume standard "defense rules beat attack rules" applies as always).

Edit: Incidentally, while cruising through the Errata, I note that the owl-Lunar is using the original rather than the 2.5 version of Invulnerable Moonsilver Carapace.  It probably learned it a while ago, being older and all ... ;)

It is.

6m, 1 wp for a full action's worth of +15L soak and minimum damage 0.

6m/action to keep it up continuously, though the Lunar has allowed it to lower at this point, so it'd cost another wp to put back up.

In reply to Azalea (msg # 462):

Because I'm using training times in the game, I am fine with Azalea and Austringer actually having the full 160 exp available to them to spend. The training times should keep them from spending them "unrealistically" rapidly, and should still let them catch up with Bea and Merlin within time. I'm using EXP as the cap on how much I want you guys to have overall, and trying to use the training times as the enforcer of the disparity between newer and older players. A disparity that should disappear sooner rather than later as in-game time passes.

Note: for the most part, you can "background" training as happening while you're playing. You should rarely need dedicated downtime to devote to training. Just enough time passing in-game and/or suitable stunts describing how you are or have been training something should suffice. I don't want it to be too burdensome.

Merlin has Spirit Cutting Attack, excellent for attacking dematerialized spirits. Occult is favored and I was thinking of getting Occult 5 and the 'kill the spirit forever' charm.

Merlin really needs more motes and Essence 4 would be very nice!

Not sure what else to get him at the moment other than filling out dots. He has something like 110 XP unspent.

I, too, am mulling over what to do with all that xp.  It'd be nice to have some more exotic combat powers (the fact that Silent Thunder whatsits has the one really, really neat Charm from Lunar hero style, the one she used to cause Austringer to throw a bystander through a building, is a continual source of envy), though I'm unsettled on what to go for: more defense and healing? start on some martial arts style (I hear White Reaper, the "other" Lunar style, is considered useful)?  Or perhaps something non-physical, since Aus. is already rather well-outfitted for fighting.  I wouldn't mind that "What's that?  Timmy's in the well?" Charm hidden someplace in the Lunar trees.  Not to mention all the base attributes and abilities to work on.  And, of course, there are always Knacks ... I really need to devote some more thought to this, don't I?

And as Merlin said, Essence 4 sure would be nice ...

Austringier: I'll make a note that as a Lunar, Aus can learn the Lunar Hero Style charms without a teacher, if I remember right. Flavorwise, we can even say he picked them up from fighting another Lunar who was using them. :)

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
After much thought, I've got how I want to spend Austringer's xp plotted out, more or less.  Assuming training times for various, different things go in succession rather than overlapping, he's going to start off raising his Martial Arts and Dodge a point (both immediate) and, given his lack of armor and the ease with which that owl-thing started cutting him up, a couple Lunar healing tricks (Bruise-relief Method, then Halting the Scarlet Flow), followed by a smattering of Lunar fighting charms (in lieu of Lunar Hero Style; the basic DEX and STA Charms are great on their own), shapeshifting tricks, and a couple odds and ends.

The one thing I'm not sure I can work into the story is meditating Essence up 4, which I have in the middle (more or less) of my Planned XP Spending Stuff.  That's three solid months of just staring at the moon ...

Segev, please let me know if you want me to post XP spending here or e-mail you or both or whatever.

Austringer doesn't have much more to do at the moment, aside from get carried around and watch what the NPCs are doing (and do incidental training stuff during any "downtime").  If there's more important plot stuff to be found out down around Oredol, he can be more proactive, but so far as I can tell from reading his and the other threads, I think he's caught up and more or less ready to link up with the other PC's.

Likewise, Azalea doesn't have any purpose other than trying to find places or people where she'd be of help.

Her current group is likeable and seems to be agreeable, so she'll follow.

The only side-task she has is the Compassion Martial Art, if it rings a bell. :p

And I realize I have no idea what process we use for training. Do I PM you? Apparently I have a lot of xp I've not been doing anything with, I might as well finalize the Medicine tree, at least.

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
Hrm.

Beatrix's concern has largely been about the purported slave trade and its supposed connection to her hometown (which apparently does not approve of such things). There is apparently some concern from followers of MaHaSuchi that these slaves are being diverted from their "proper" destination of his breeding pits.

Falan is a kingdom beset by the Beastmen, who kidnap people for MaHaSuchi's pits. They have also apparently been kidnapping more than usual to sell as slaves. Watch Hill, the Duchy you're in now, has taken the brunt of this and is actually feeling the pinch in its serf population.

Falan's history goes back to a time when some Exalted apparently fought off Anathema and their army of demons to establish the kingdom. How much of this is myth by now is an open question. The young prince of Oredol, the Duchy closest to Trademeet Dale (where you all started), is the first Dragonblooded to Exalt in a very long time, which made Duke Amaran, his father, very excited. The prince just may have acquired a new mospid pet. Or maybe not; I need to use this to help bring Austringer to the rest of the party.

Watch Hill has an enormous artifact tower it uses to help protect its borders. Merlin thought it looked...familiar.

I think that sums up where you guys are and what you know.

Merlin needs to get to Nexus, you said; what is his goal there?

Azalea is trying to find a mentor for a particular martial arts style. Sorry it's being slow there.

As far as training, a little comment about what your character is working on, however you want to stunt it, as background fluff is sufficient. If you want to tell me OOC, that's fine, too. The main thing, mechanically, is that sufficient training time passes in the game. It should largely not require more than a declaration that it's part of what the PC is working on in any free time they have during their adventures.

Since Austringer has had some quasi-downtime while posing as a mundane mospid and hanging around with Seln, the Duke, and that interloping Immaculate, I'm going to tack on his self-training attempts and such for all the things he is spending that XP on in a post at the end of "Crossing the Yanaze," if that's all right.  (Presumably, he hasn't had four solid months to hang around outside at night staring at the moon to raise his Essence to 4, but at least he can get started with some of the more elaborate stuff and perhaps polish off some of the shorter times.)

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
Hm. with the party about to head into the wilds (not the Wyld, though), it may be time for a new OOC thread.

In any event, we have a new player joining us soon. The players screen name is kitsune9tails, and some of you may recognize him from the old Exalted forums. (I'm not as active on the new ones as I once was, so I am not sure how active he is over there, myself.)

We're still working on specifics of how his character fits in, but this brings us up to a healthy 5 active players once more!

I'm also somewhat excited about what's coming up, as plot shoes should be dropping for Azalea, Beatrix, and Austringer relatively shortly, while Merlin's got a major one on the far end of this side quest (for which seeds have been laid perhaps less clearly than I would like, though I promise you they're there).

Re: OOC thread: Into Falan!
Minor vocabulary-nazi note: It's "scrip," not "script," when referring to the currency of the Realm.

Peddles and Bea would know this, too: the most common currencies in this area are the guild dinar (and its derivatives) and Fallan's coinage. The Copper Crown is the primary unit of Fallan's currency, and is ostensibly worth one dinar. It is broken into 4 Falanbits. 100 cents is a Falanbit. 4 shills make a cent. (There are thus 1600 shills per Copper Crown.)

There are just under 24 shills to the Imperial Yen; the Imperial Yen is the base unit of scrip.

Trademeet Dale's penchant for using Imperial Boot Polish as a means of currency exchange is not too widely known, because they mostly do it internally. As a matter of realpolitick, they also use the Falanian Copper Crown at face value, but they try very hard to use it mostly for trade back to Falan, as it often isn't quite worth the full dinar that it supposedly is.
