OOC # 19
The Oasis at Gold Spike...it's kinda like two hotels on the same block got folded into a single business. Gold Spike WAS a casino, downtown...they're shifting away from that. They've got the cheaper rooms over there (because you're above the club, or right above the street, so it's usually pretty noisy until the wee hours.) They semi-sorta renovated the rooms...the halls still have some pretty dated carpet, but the rooms (or, at least my room) has faux-hardwood flooring. The walls are HEAVILY textured, which is usually a sign that the sheetrock work was done fast and sloppy and they're relying on the texturing to conceal any flaws, and my room, at least, was painted a very dark gray that made it feel kind of claustrophobic. It's got a big courtyard out back that has some patio games, and a bunch of lounge chairs and such...
One of the other people in the group stayed over on the Oasis side...which looks kind of like a 60s-era motel. Three stories, all the rooms open onto a fenced courtyard that's got a pool in it (that wasn't heated, so we didn't go swimming at all there). Room's about the same size, concrete-brick (not cinder-block, but similar texture), brighter colors, larger window, nicer bathroom, slightly higher price (had I known beforehand, I would have booked a room on that side, but whatever...) The two courtyards are connected by a gate, so you can easily go from one to the other (most of the time, anyway...)
The overall vibe I got from the place is it's kind of hipster management trying to cash in on Old-Vegas nostalgia, while trying to make the place more appealing to locals by getting rid of the casino and making it a club. It has a LOT of potential...but it needs better management (and better service, overall...I mean, when I checked in, it looked like someone had made the bed, folded down the sheets...and then fallen asleep on it. One of the sheets had brown stains on it that looked like someone had scrubbed off really heavy makeup with it, sometime in the past, one of the towels had what I really hope was a rust stain on it, and someone had left two wet washcloths draped over the bar for the shower curtain. Not a good way to make a first impression on guests. Between that, and being turned back at the gate between courtyards by one of the bouncers, because the Gold Spike was 'on club hours', requiring us to go all the way back out the gate on the far side of the Oasis courtyard and around the block to a specific door where someone 'might be able to help us', I'm pretty unimpressed with the place, overall. Definite contrast to last time I stayed in a hotel down there...the Plaza...just down the street and around the corner. THAT place was awesome.)
