Re: SPACE 2
Roy's reticence was broken by Wilkens' question. "I think it's safe to say that not all the Angels agreed with the treaty. Ask anyone on that moon we're going to, I'm pretty sure they didn't agree with it. We know already that He-La and the other Angels from Bura didn't agree with it. Could be that our initial contact with Angels was some dissident group that was sick of the treaty and saw, in us, a possible way to break out. Some of the stories they tell say that one of the reasons the Angels even know about Earth was because they dumped some of their hard-case criminals there, stranded them to survive or die on their own abilities. How much of that became part of Humanity's background, I don't know...we'll probably never know. But we've got a mean streak that nobody else in the Universe can emulate, combined with the ability to shut it off when we don't want it...and we're as adaptable or even more adaptable than any other race out there."
He thought for a moment and shrugged. "The one thing that's beyond dispute...we know how to wage war like nobody else we've met. What we lack in technology, we make up for in sheer creativity and downright subversiveness, and that's something the Demons have apparently never had to deal with before. We keep pressing the war...tearing into them before they get a chance to collate their data, regroup, and redefine their military doctrines, so they've been stuck on the ropes and unable to get a breather. They keep hoping that the bell's gonna ring, that we'll go to our corner and take a breather, and give them a chance to get their head back on straight--but this isn't a boxing match, it's a street brawl. There's no bells. Nobody gets to tell us when the round is over, we fight until we decide we're done. And I'm guessin' that scares the livin' shit out of the Demons, because everyone else they've ever fought has, at some point, said, 'Yeah, let's figure out a way to stop fighting.' They've tried, repeatedly...tried to negotiate treaties with us, tried to intimidate us into stalling our attack, holding off, even tried to stall us by sending out their best pilot to take on one of ours, solo...and we've batted every offer back in their faces. They honestly don't know how to deal with us."
He shrugged again, and added, "At least, that's the way I read their behavior. Someone else may have a different read on it...but each encounter we have with 'em just makes me that much more certain that, on the grand scale, at least, I know what they're thinkin'. Not so solid on the individuals, but as a group..." He went silent again, and nodded.
