RtJ Info and Caveats

Effigy of Fate has been running, with occasional hiatuses, for seven years. The current crop of players has, in that time, had children, changed jobs, and moved back and forth across the country. There's a lot of accumulated personal and character history in the group. As a new player, you won't be expected to instantly know all of that history, but you'll need to know what you're getting into and respect what's come before. There will be room for you to take your character in new directions, and I promise to work with you to integrate your ideas into the existing story. But you may sometimes run into situations where I step in and negotiate changes to posts. (Part of this is plain necessity--I don't really expect anybody to go through and read the hundreds of pages of previous posts on StoryCrafter.)

I'm currently accepting auditions for the following roles:

New characters (entirely at my discretion): mercenaries attached to the dwarven Lord-Paladin Dhajzun's expedition to the Mithril Delve.

Notice that I've said nothing about mechanics. We do have them here, but for now they're largely in the background. For now, know that this is a game with an epic character and some big numbers (though the characters themselves are not at epic levels in any system).

So how do I actually request to join?

This'll be a multi-step process, and may not be as fast as either of us would like it to be. But here's the outline:

Player bio
What's your background? I don't need a life story, but some idea of what games you've played, what kind of games you like...and also what kind of life you lead outside RPOL. Not your home address and employer and SSN, but something about your age and life stage (For example: I'm an early-30s graduate student in music juggling two young children, teaching, and my dissertation.) Maturity is a big plus, since this game runs into real life snags semi-regularly and isn't a good fit for youthful impatience. Note that younger players are still welcome to apply--we just might not be able to keep up with you.

Desired Role
Which role(s) would you be interested in, and, more importantly, why? If you're proposing a new character, what makes that character compelling? Why would he or she be part of a mercenary unit, or part of a dwarven expedition to recover lost halls?

Writing Sample
We've got a lot of quality prose accumulated, and I want to make sure we don't dilute that. Give me three to five paragraphs of your best stuff, preferably in a fantasy vein. If you're proposing a new character, writing something for that character is a plus.

We'll move on from there.
