Re: Film

In a way the mostly comedy file "The Mouse that Roared" covers an inbalanced mix of technology. There was also a sequel (whose name escapes me) where they go to the moon in a very Steampunkish 'rocket ship' that floats to the moon over a very long time. The float-rocket is so much more habitable as it includes live chickens for fresh eggs for breakfast! Very important don't you know.

Re: Film

It occured to me while flipping through a stack of DVDs at a store that "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" has alot of the Steampunk elements. Really Diesel punk given the setting.

It has technology gizmos that aren't super-magic like Star Trek. It has the old school sort of ethos of loyalty and proper manners.

In a similiar way the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is something like that too. Nemo being the inventor of the group of course.

I'm happy to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang included. I've been thinking a lot lately that that would qualify. Several on the list that I hadn't thought of as steampunk but now that they're mentioned, yes, I see it now. When I watched the 2009 Sherlock Holmes I  immediately declared it steampunk.

I thought zulu would keep to the list lol, Personally I find that is about the tech level soldier wise I would envision for most settings albeit true that could breach into a more loose interpretation of diesel punk as well but I feel that regimented feel as well as the martini-henry rifle is a very classic steampunk look. I feel its defiantly worth the watch if that catches your fancy. ^^

Re: Film

Funny thing. Was just thinking that too. Found a DVD copy at the used book store today.

Though not so much 'punk as one might wish for it does show alot of the personalities of that era. Wonderful character ides too. Like Colour Sergeant Barnes. I mean really... ya gotta have one of those in steam punk game!

Zulu also shows the "woolies" (IIRC) i.e. the 'primitive' people going at things. Zulu Dawn shows the primitives achieving victory. For Space 1889 players it shows what a large scale Sky Martian attack would be like.

Re: Film

I remember watching Treasure Planet and I really enjoyed it.  What an imaginative retelling of a classic story.  Its honestly a shame it didn't do better, I would love for it to have spawned an animated series, or at least a sequel.  Would have been a great setting for an RPG too.

I do think the film industry is taking more note of the Steam punk (and various other punk) genres though.  I remember seeing Journey II (the mysterious island) recently and appreciating the plot twist that had them escaping the place in the old Nautilus sub.

Would Real Steel qualify for a "punk genre" inspired movie?  It was a very good movie I thought, though I suppose the robots weren't steam powered.  They were cool though.

A little out of the period being WW2 is the movie "The Cruel Sea". What it does portray is the life, hazards and handling of a Corvette. The corvette is the size of many air ships protrayed in Steam Punk. In fact its larger than the 1889 Aphids.

Ah... and if you want gunboat life ashore and incombat watch "The Sand Pebbles" which has a paddle wheel steam boat in China.

Another good BBC series is What the victorian's did for us.

It highlights technology changes we now take for granted.

May have mentioned both of these already. Depending on your country the shows are free to watch on the internet and some TV stations.

Re: Film

Been watching Avatar the Legend of Khorra.

Lots of neat Steampunk ideas in this one. Electro shock gloves, electric cars, ships, railway etc. The setting is working with more an early industrial feel. Artwork can be adapted to Steampunk.

In their case the Benders provide a lot of power. Earth benders push railway cars. Fire benders heat up boilers. Advanced fire benders make electricity. For Steampunk you would just need to swap the power source to a mad-scientist-devcie. ^_^

Re: Film

Yes, Legend of Korra advanced the technology of the Avatar world considerably.  Good series, though it pales in comparison to the original of course.  One could very easily make the setting fully steampunk:)

I also watched the first episode of the new BBC America show Copper, set in New York in 1864.  Very good setting for a Steam Punk based game.  Gritty and dark, with lots of period details and potential for plots.

A slight alteration of the steam punk genre...if the "benders" were a small subset of society it would make an interesting plot angle.. especially if they aren't always treated as more than cheep labor, or a piece of kit. High powered "Gifted" individuals might be respected along the lines of an artisan or machinist.. but the low level and blue collar "workers" could be stuck in a poor paying job with no advancement and no chance of ever getting away from the factory or company that they work for.( in the industrial revolution people skilled with the construction of some machines were forbidden to leave England.)

Re: Film

TVO has been running a historical perspective show. Didn't catch the name yet but been taping it.

This Brit blonde lady talks about certain topics. They go through the transition from medieval times to victorian to georgian (WW1) times. For instance they talked about the use of the bedroom. Also the bed types and their coverings.

In victorian times the middle class had two bedrooms, one for the man and one for the woman. This way the late chatting man wouldn't disturb the exhausted woman. If they wanted special visits there was a door between the two rooms.

The bed changes were funny. I think it was the Victorian one with like 12 layers to it. Being as there was no electric or propane heaters the beds were cold at night. There was many layers of blankets. The rise up at the foot of the bed was important as it let you hang the sheets.

The feather mattress (the upper mattress) needed every day to be fluffed and dried. Thus the 9 layers of blankets on top had to be taken off and put back every day.

This is why the household had a maid... to help handle the sheets and pillows.

Re: Film

Reminds me, saw 1911 Revolution (not the one with Jackie Chan).

It is post Victorian and starting into WW1. It deals with the turmoil and revolution in China of the year 1911. One aspect I found relevant is the culture/technology clash that can exist in Victorian games.

One one hand you have the Chinese Monarchy, Feudal 'for life' Ministers, troops in traditional shirts with early single shot rifle/muskets. On the other you see the Euoropean powers and modern soldiers (some join the revolution). The modern users having Victorian or better technolgy.

Some games, like the Pen and Paper 1889 Im running, deals with this sort of culture clash. Modern european vs old/ancient cultures. In that regard I found 1911 relevant.

I don't know if anyone has seen this, but BBC America is going to be doing a crime drama series set in 1864 in New York City.  I don't know if there would be any Steam Punk devices, and it is a bit early for the genre, but I think for setting and plot it will probably have a lot of good ideas.  This is a synopsis I found from their website:

Just including the link that lilbug provided in a diffrent thread.  I figured it should be here.  It looks like they've wrapped up the first season and have the go for a second.

While not a Steampunk setting the show Thundercats does use a mix of high tech, low tech, primitive tech and magic. Its an interesting mix match that could be paralleled in a Steampunk game.

For example...

Hi tech airship explorer travel among the primitive tech natives fighting the local wizard.

(Thundercats goto the Berbel village fighting Mumra)

Re: Film

Basically, yes, that is what I am saying. Now it's not true SP, due to lacking the 'punk' aspect of the genre, but it's technology and culture as shown in the series is very close to the Steam Punk era and locations in the real world.

Let's review:
Culturally pervasive, seemingly eternal, and female; monarch? Check.

Hot air balloons as transport and recreation? Check.

Tuxedos with tails and tophats as formal wear? Check.

Conflicts with native tribes over continued expansion of the 'civilized' culture? Check.

Steam as the leading industrial power source? Check.

One room schools as the primary source of education in smaller towns, while major cities begin to subdivide their schooling and cease giving direct attention to problem students? Check, check, and check.

The newspaper as a major information medium, while TV seems nonexistent and radio a new and limited technology? Double check.

See? Definitely steam punk related, though not out and out.

Re: Film

A few similar trappings does not steampunk make.

On a serious note, I feel that the contrasts caused by the industrial revolution vs agrarian society and the conflict of class are salient characteristics of both the real world historical Victorian era and the steampunk genre. That's where the "punk" lies; in the struggle.

Every era has its struggle. Dieselpunk, for example, is the contrast of world ideologies; fascism vs communism, workers' rights vs capitalistic ogliarchy in the midst of the cold war/ww2.

Cyberpunk's conflicts were media driven corporate domination vs the free will of the masses, with the pressures of population growth and dwindling resources.

'punk is about struggle. Drama is about conflict.

Re: Film

Well stumbled across this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T...of_Brisco_County,_Jr

"While ostensibly a Western, the series routinely includes elements of the science fiction and steampunk genres."

Been a long time since that was around. Having steampunk in it combined with Bruce Campbell, well that sounds fun enough to see about tracking down.

Has the odd steam punk or at least too-early-tech ideas crop up at times.

Recently watched Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp playing a Victorian gentleman vampired and boxed the 1960s. Interesting view on behaviours and the changed morales. Also just fun.

Re: Film

With the recent passing of actor Sir Christopher Lee I started to look into some of his films I had not seen before.  Surprised to find out he was a Frankenstien Monster with actor Peter Cushing as Baron Frankenstien. In fact Peter Cushing did several films with Hammer Productions as Frankensien. Only two have a linked story. All of them have a portrayal of period activities and a different take on "steampunk" and the "monster".

Re: Film

I just watched Alice Through the Looking Glass and I do have to say I very much enjoyed all the clock work elements.  Overall I found it very imaginative and the effects were beautiful of course, the period sets and costumes.  I liked it, I don't care what the critics say.  Was it perfect, no, but it was an interesting story interpretation.

My Mother.. as I am on the wrong side of a century myself that is saying something.  Didn't want to see it as she said rather then being like a dream it seemed more a nightmare.  While I have to agree I liked it myself.
