Re: Out of Character Thread 2
Sorry for my absence.
Last week lightning struck a tree about 50' from our house. It hit the top, which is about 200 feet high, zapped down the length, and blew the bark off the bottom 10' of tree. We've found shreds of bark up to 80' away. There are obvious cracks in the tree, which means we need to have someone come and take it down before it decides to fall. Remember, 200' tall tree, 50' from house. Probably won't hit us given the lean, but I'm not interested in percentages right now. And if it falls the way I think it will, it will land right across the driveway, trapping us, and condemning us to be eaten by the cats when their food runs out.
Unfortunately, the energy then zipped through the ground to our house, where it played whack-a-mole with the electrical system. The circuit breakers snapped, but not quite quickly enough. The surge blew out our AC and several appliances (all the ones with delicate electronic control systems). We've also lost one whole circuit in the basement, but the electrician says it's probably a Ground Fault Interrupt which tripped. And it's most likely behind one of our bookcases. I'll need to clear that part of the basement, move all the books, and check behind each bookcase (total of 5) until I find out where it is. There was nothing critical on that circuit, so I'll get to it when I have time ... probably sometime early in 2020.
So with temperatures in the 90's, and no AC, we've been spending a good amount of time out of the house when possible. The internet has been a much lower priority.
Fortunately, I'm back at work today (took most of last week off to deal with repair scheduling), and RPOL ranks higher than my afternoon meeting.
I'll get reading the IC thread ASAP. Can't promise any posts today, but if not, definitely tomorrow.
On a related yet totally unrelated note: We went to see the Christopher Robin movie. It's hilarious for anyone that remembers the old Winnie the Pooh cartoons or has read the books. The adults in the audience were laughing as much, if not more, than the kids. In case anyone wonders, Eeyore is my favorite.
