BB, please correct if your versions function differently, but according to the Magic Item Compendium:

Doom Burst: Whenever you score a critical hit with this weapon, a wave of blackness washes over the target, causing it to become shaken (no saving throw) for 5 rounds. This effect activates even if the creature struck is not normally subject to extra damage from critical hits. This effect doesn't stack with itself or with any other fear effects (it can't render an already shaken creature frightened, for example).

Hammerblock: A hammerblock shield or suit of armor magically turns away bludgeoning weapons, such as maces and clubs. While wearing armor or carrying a shield that has this property, you gain damage reduction 5/piercing or slashing.

I'm curious about the Ring of Vengeance.

It looks like most of the items are from the Magic Item Compendium.

3/day when critical hit is scored on you, attacker takes 5d6 points of damage.

LOL Myarra. I'm just thinking there's no unclaimed buried treasure out there that doesn't have some kind of something near it. Look at the Banshee, for example. She didn't care about all the junk lying on the ground near her, but would it be dangerous for us to go there, if we didn't know about her? Oh, yes.

Hopefully the crystal keys off your intent.  We were trying to avoid adventurers, merchants, banks, and the like.  Buried treasure that just happened to have a monster or deadly trap should have been okay.

But, wouldn't that treasure be the monster's? If we searched around the owlbears the party killed, I'm sure we would find some kind of nest they call home and even though they care not for treasure, it's considered theirs.

I'd have to agree with that. It's trying to look for something unknown to us, when we'd normally ask something like: show me the Moradin Temple in the forest, or show me so and so in town.

I'm not going to talk about this anymore. It comes down to the GM not wanting to give away all his secrets and I don't blame him. That would ruin the game if you could just scry for free stuff.

Since they appear to be identified in the treasure thread, I'm going to assume that me, Byron and Roen know what they are. I'll edit my post, if that's not the case.

OK, what is the group doing? Nolan's Teleport can only take so many with him, so if he was going to bring all of you, it would take multiple trips over the next 2 days.

Do you all want to do this? Or is it ok that the party splits up until Myarra's sidequest is over?

I need to know so I can move on....

Byron is ok with a day or two off in Daak if Kali and the big cat are ok with it.

My vote is that we all go together over a couple of days.

1) The familiar ritual takes 24 hours.
2) The site of the humming tower is a fair distance (exact amount unknown) from where we'd be teleporting in to.  Again, my assumption is that we'd be going to the building we found Lorrik in.  But if Nolan can teleport to the "broken bridge" area, that would change things.

So it's not a case of pop over, get my familiar, and pop back.  It's going to take a day (plus travel time) to get to the area and summon the familiar.  Given that, it would be best to just make it part of the "humming tower investigation" quest.

There are nine of us, including Raie.  I'm guessing familiars don't count, since they're "part" of their wizard and I don't think we've counted Flicka as a separate being before. BB can correct, as always.

Now, perhaps some people won't want to go check out the tower.  That's up to them. If anyone bows out, that reduces the number Nolan needs to bring.  If everyone goes, it would take three teleports to bring us all there, plus two teleports to bring Nolan back in between.

The arrival in mid-air wrinkle is another matter.

So, long story short, I'd prefer to bring all those that are willing to come, even if it takes until tomorrow to get us all there, and then head for the tower to investigate, at which point I'll abandon you all to perform the ritual.

I could stay or go, which ever is easier for the party with these teleport spells. I'm helping out the farmers and rebuilding the burnt buildings.

I'd agree with myarra on this one...if no one objects, have the full force and see what we can do, even if it takes time to summon, we can prepare and scout if the first team

OK. Looks like the majority of the party wants the whole party near the towers, so I'll go along with that.

Familiars will be considered "Equipment" and won't take up a spot, such as Flika or Rae, but Byron's horse? No. Too big.

So, just to let you know, Nolan will Teleport himself, Myarra, Aliana and Amara on the first trip, then Teleport back to Daak.

The next day, he will Teleport himself and another 3, BUT that will still leave 1 party member back in Daak.

Nolan would have to Teleport back to Daak, wait another day, and then Teleport the last person for a total of 6 Teleports just to get the whole party to the broken bridge.

Repeat to get back to Daak. I feel sorry for the lone person alone in the forest waiting to get back to Daak.

I'll let you all think on that while I get things started....

Well, I don't think there's much point in bringing Byron's horse if the rest of us are walking.  Byron can, of course, insist if he wants to. A horse counts as 2 people, so there's room in the 5th teleport if he does insist, so it doesn't really change the math.

I'm assuming Nolan can teleport twice per day, given that he just told us he has two teleports memorized.

So, my itinerary is as follow:

Day 1, I.E. today and right now: Nolan teleports Myarra, Aliana, and Amara to the broken bridge and then returns to Daak.  I go into the woods and begin the familiar summoning ritual.  The others can come with me, continue on to the tower itself, or wait at the broken bridge.

Day 2, Morning: Nolan brings Byron, Kalli, and Twiggy.

Note: Raie comes along with Kalli, and Flicka comes along with Amara.

Everyone (other than Myarra who's still busy, and Roen who's still in Daak) begins exploring the humming tower.

Myarra will have completed her ritual by early evening and can join the others at that time.

At this point, the only person still back in Daak is Roen.  I specifically chose him to stay behind because he said that he was fine helping the farmers.  I'm not leaving him behind entirely, just making him the last to join the whole group, since somebody had to be last.

This is where things get slightly complicated.

Case 1: The tower requires more searching.  Either we simply haven't finished, or we've decided that the whole party is needed to crack this nut.
Result: Nolan returns to Daak at the end of Day 2 and brings Roen back with him on the morning of Day 3.  The quest continues.

Case 2: The tower has given up its secrets and we're ready to march on the mines.
Result: Same as Case 1.  A little less likely because we'd probably want a better way of getting there than just walking.  But it is a possibility, so I'm including it.

Case 3: The tower has given up its secrets but we still have work to do before we're ready to kick dracolich posterior.
Result: Nolan takes three people back to Daak at the end of Day 2, and then returns on the morning of Day 3 to fetch the final 3.

I think Case 3 would be in order to save a teleport on me. I don't mind being the odd man out.

Amara would want to go with you, keep watch, Myarra. This is a wild forest.

The other thing to keep in mind is that just because Nolan can transport up to three at a time, he doesn't have to do those first. He might take one back alone first, or he might do two sets of twos instead of a three and a one.

That sounds like a plan. I can take Roenthelm and Twiggy on the next trip, so the "lovers" can have more alone time. Roenthelm or I can hold onto Vernon's ring.

I, on the other hand, would strip them naked, tar and feather them, and run them out town with a whip!  Tar might be a little hard to come by, I think it's used in thatching, but I know we have enough chickens.

Aliana, as diplomatic as she normally is, would also be a tad put off by these "good samaritans"

And,  as an eduated woman, she'd take some issue with a man working for someone whose name he couldn't pronounce

I have a feeling we're going to see more and more bounty hunters the more we kill Cultists, which adds a bit more excitement to the game, IMO. I watch a lot of TV and I've always loved the reoccurring villain.

As for jurisdiction of Daak, I think we're on our own here. The farmers are relying on the party members for protection from anything that comes out of the forest. And I'm sure the tower predates any towns that think Daak might be in their jurisdiction.

So, once we hear about this bounty hunter, I think I might vote Amara as Mayor of Daak. *laughs*

Turning to Amara,

A Sapphire gem the size of a plum is going to be very expensive, but time consuming to get to. We'll have to take a vote on what we want to do.

I had the same thought as Byron.  250gp spread among 11 hunters?  They're going to have spent more money on travel expenses before they're done.

So, as Byron said, they're either really bad at math, or this bounty is just a cover for something worse.

While Bounty Hunters are allowed (and even promoted) on the Sword Coast, their purpose is to allow communities to outsource their law enforcement.  Daak is not part of Soubar, Scornubel, or Eltuel, never mind Triel.  And we certainly do not fall under the jurisdiction of some drow house of the underdark.  Bounty Hunters have no rights here.

Actually, 250 gold is quite a bit of money. They were probably thinking the job might be easy because Amara is a "female". *Laughs*. I feel sorry for them. But, 11 hunters focused on 1 person can be dangerous, even for characters our level. We don't know who or what they are or are capable of.

After extensive, and mostly futile, research on ways to speed up the excavation of these towers, the only real option I've come across is the polymorph spell to turn someone into a burrowing creature such as the Dire Badger.

I don't suppose Amara knows polymorph?

Earth elementals can move through the earth, but as far as I can tell, they can't affect anything while they're doing it, and they can't leave tunnels behind.  So they can go down and see what's down there, but they can't bring it up.  They're kind of like Vernon in that respect.

As for summoning a Dire Badger, I'm seeing a DM's call here.  The text of the spell says:
"This spell summons a natural creature. It appears where you designate and acts immediately, on your turn. It attacks your opponents to the best of its ability. If you can communicate with the creature, you can direct it not to attack, to attack particular enemies, or to perform other actions."

So the important part here is:
1) Can you communicate with it?  - Does Speak with Animals allow you to talk to a Dire Badger?
2) Does doing what we want it to do count as "perform other actions"

Because this would absolutely speed things up.  We'd want to leave the gem alone until we find out about the magic, but we could excavate everything else before Nolan and the others return.

That's an absolute statement.  It's not a matter of will.  It does not leave behind a tunnel or hole.


The DM is, of course, free to rule however he sees fit.

I know I'm grasping at straws,  but that Absolute statement merely says that it normally does, not what it's forced to do.
It doesn't say specifically that the elemental is unable to do otherwise

Sorry if I'm sounding like an accursed rules lawyer (cause I hate them too) but it really does.  Otherwise, it would include "unless it wants to" or something to that effect.  As written it says specifically that tunnels are not included.

But the game also has a DM who can say, sure, but I think it's silly, so I'm doing it differently.  Because sometimes the rules really are kind of silly.  But we'll have to wait until we can get BB to weigh in.

And we have two other good possibilities even if the DM rejects using the elemental.

1) Polymorph
2) Summon burrowing creature.

Either one will get the job done in a jiffy, rather than spending days of hard labor.

No worries.  I'm okay waiting for a DM interpretation, though it seems strange that if I wanted to have my Earth Elemental dig for something, he'd have to give me a sad expression and claim he can't.   :)

And I can summon a Celestial Dire Badger, though not for long.

Also, our druid could do Soften Earth and stone, and I could Shape stone.

From just a quick check, it looks like you could have your Celestial Dire Badger dig out a tunnel 90' long with one casting.  (10' per round, and at 9th level, it hangs around for 9 rounds) I'm pretty sure that would be enough to completely reveal all the goodies remaining in Vernon's tower.

BB might say it takes a couple of castings, but that would still allow you to complete all the work in just a single morning.

Sounds pretty useful to me.  Especially in comparison to the "several days" we were contemplating.

Wow, the ladies decided to bring a backhoe to an archaeological dig site.

I think the Earth Elemental can do all sorts of stuff with the earth, or why call it an EARTH Elemental? We'd have to summon a small one and still sift through the dirt, though. As for Vernon's tower, the tower is complete. That's why it's taking so long to excavate. The party has to bring all the dirt out of the tower and then down to the ground again to sift through it. Any rough digging by summoned creatures or an elemental might break things.

Need BB to weigh in on this.  I already posted why earth elementals can't do it given the rules as written.  And I see no reason why a burrower can't do it.  Teacups would be at risk for sure.  But coins, gems, armor, weapons, etc aren't going to get broken.

I've played many video games where Earth Elementals do all sorts of stuff with the earth, but I'm going to stick with the rules here with their powers.

Water Elementals will wash dirt away, but the rocks will still need to be moved by hand. I would decrease the time during your digging if a Water Elemental is used on the 2nd broken tower, but not Vernon's.

No, no spells that would be helpful for this. Amara is mostly illusion and enchantment.

Nolan, are you able to make wands or do we know someone who does? I was thinking of getting a wand of glitterdust to make oponents blinded and lose their AC and I get to use sneak attack. Twiggy feels kinda useless in battle and trying to think of things to help him do better in fights without being in direct melee.

Yes, Nolan can make wands. He's currently making a wand for Aliana. It should be done by now, so I'll send a PM to BB to confirm when we get back to Daak. But, you should make something better than Glitterdust. At least Magic Missiles, but Rogues really are at a disadvantage against undead since critical and sneak attacks don't work on them.

Has the group run across any place that sells magical items? A magic missle wand is something that would be good against all opponents.

This fight my extra sneak attack wouldn't work on undead but a grease wand would. I am just trying to better equip Twiggy since I didn't make him optimized in creation but instead a fun character for me. I do have to get away from the sling and to a shortbow to use his multiple attacks.

Aliana's item is done when we get back to Daak. I remember what I was doing now. But anyways, you should play Twiggy how you want to play him. I enjoy his character. He just sucks when it comes to undead, but when we run into traps and sneaking around, that's his thing. We all grow.

Every town we've gone to has somebody selling something. But, Nolan can make it cheaper. It just takes time.

There are dozens of undead to the North. I could only show so much on my map. My map skills are beginner at best. So, I gave the description of what was North beyond the wall and when the party moved closer, I would move the map down and update what's up there.

Who else is around us, and where are they?

Based off the Main Map, there is a large group of undead trying to get through the opening. Once the bodies start piling up, they will be able to move over the 4 foot tall ruined wall. It's unknown how many are there since the undead are so close together.

To the East is the Solid Fog blocking more undead there and forcing them to move further South, but they keep getting blown up by Nolan's Fireballs before they can even get there.

To the South, there are a few undead here and there, but once they get closer, they will start to become a problem.

And who are the yellow blocks north of me?

There are so many "common" undead that I just randomly move one here and there to change the map around. This particular undead just happened to move through the doorway before Nolan got his spell up. It looks like a ghoul to Byron and Myarra.

As for the ruins, the majority of the walls are around 4 feet tall with the thickness shown on the map. The Outer wall used to be 10 feet thick and the inner walls around 3 feet thick.

I started the campaign just for a few Real Life friends but, as usual, people dropped out and I've been forced to go poaching.

One extremely important point that might be a deal-breaker, so I want to get it out up front:

As far as character creation goes, I'm limiting the campaign to just the PHB.  I have been handing out spells and equipment from The Spell Compedndium and the Magic Item Compendium, but most of the other expansion books are just filled with too much unbalanced nonsense that the designers of the module didn't expect and which require me to make too many modifications to account for.


The party currently consists of: 2 Clerics, 2 Rogues, 1 Monk, and 1 Ranger.  A spellcaster is what I'm most interested in adding.

If you're interested, go find "The Tsarian Empire" DM'd by Hyperion and send me an RTJ.

Just checking to see if you're interested in the R.A. game.  You seemed interested, but I never got an RTJ, so I wanted to see if you'd decided one way or the other.

I don't play Magic Users all that well. I was hoping to play a priest, but those spots are taken. I'll pass this time.

That's fine.  I just wanted to make sure everyone got the chance if they wanted it.  There are no bad players (or DM's) in this game so it makes a great place to recruit.

If I might be a bit of a devil's advocate, BB, I'd say that, especially in 3rd edition, there are all kinds of priests, from brute force ones, to healing specialists, to spell combatants, to stealth and charm specialists.   Adding another cleric doesn't have to mean redundancy.

What can I say? I like to play what I like to play. :)

Just curious, but how much would it be to upgrade the Greatsword to add the Bane power to it?

Amara's in debt pretty bad (-1,564.6 gold), and there's nothing particularly useful for her. Sure, she could use some of the things, but wouldn't fight for them.

The things she could use:
* Figurine of Wondrous Power: Silver Raven
* +1 dagger Doom Burst
* 1 Wand of Daylight 12 charges
* 1 set Pipes of the Sewers
* Ring of Vengeance

She does have a +1 returning dagger - if someone would like that (she isn't generally going to be taking advantage of that because she doesn't generally throw weapons), then she'd want the +1 dagger of Doom Burst, so that she has a magical dagger.

Probably the thing she'd want most is the Pipes of the Sewers. Doesn't hurt to be able to summon rat swarms...

Amara, I don't see any problem with you swapping one magical dagger for another unless the value was extremely different say +1 vs +3 or something similar in different capabilities.  Even then I don't see much of a problem with swapping it out.

Amara wouldn't care which one - and unless I'm quite mistaken, both are +1. She would use either as a backup, worst-case weapon.

I'm just saying if someone else who is more likely to throw a dagger wants the one she currently has, they're welcome to it if she can get the other, so she has some magical weapon.

Twiggy could use the other returning dagger as a backup but he is going into town tommorrow to find a shortbow to use. The daggers have a short range and he needs something with more distance. The flaming arrows will be helpful going this route.

Well, if I'm doing the math correctly, it would be taking the power of a +3 weapon and making it a +4. I'll have to check and see if I can even do that yet. But, money and XP wise, it shouldn't be too expensive:

14,000 = 7,000 gold in supplies needed
7000 = 280 xp
7 days to upgrade

Caster Level for Weapons

The caster level of a weapon with a special ability is given in the item description. For an item with only an enhancement bonus and no other abilities, the caster level is three times the enhancement bonus. If an item has both an enhancement bonus and a special ability, the higher of the two caster level requirements must be met.

+2 Keen Great Sword: +2 Enhancement bonus and a +1 Special Ability

So, for Nolan to add "Bane" (Assuming if you would be doing this), you would use the +2 for determining the required level to enhance, which would be Level 6. After spending the money, XP and time, the Sword would be:

+2 Keen "Whatever" Bane Greatsword

Sorry to come in late, but I wouldn't mind the Keen greatsword.  Even without the dragon bane power it would be a major improvement.

What ever Nolan wants to do is ok with me.  I would be worried about him being alone in case Baha decides to make good on her threat. However, Rufus and the others should be able to help him in that case.  We shouldn't be gone more than a week tops.

I'm not worried about Nolan.  Nobody Evil can get into the tower.  The people of Daak, on the other hand, are in danger as long as Baha is cackling in the wilds.  We're getting too much on our plate: Bounty hunters (and the Centauri behind them), Baha, and the Cult.  We need to start actually putting some of these threats down for good.  Otherwise I'm never going to get my ship flying again.

But I don't want Nolan being lab-bound for several months enchanting magical items.  It's really not fair to him.  Although a few scrolls shouldn't be a big deal while we're selling the loot.

Again, I'd like to have the +2 greatsword.  I already have the improved critical feat, so that sword would give me a 25% chance per strike to get a critical.  Nations would fall beneath my iron boots.  Ahem, I mean, think of the good I could do.  Given we're in the Forest of Wyrms, getting the dragon bane properly added later would be a good idea, but we could live without it for the short term.  And I doubt a dragon bane sword would work on a dracolich in any case.

Other than going out to sell things, Amara is likely to be doing a lot of scrying in the tower as well, so I don't think Nolan will get tooo lonely

That's how it works when your character has Item Creation Feats. A GM on a table top game can just say that the time passes by and you made your item, but it's more realistic to me to see the time go by. In the end, it will be worth it to us because the enemy will be defeated by the very thing that we needed to win.

Agreed on giving common weapons found to locals for their own protection / use. Agreed with pearls being used for identification.

It's my understanding that jewelry usually sells between at or close to 100% - much better than magical items.

I suggest that with that we look for an Artificer's Monocle, which allows one to use detect magic while wearing to identify items in 1 minute, and costs 1,500gp. This would be VERY useful for identifying items in general - and I think is a good bargain. Maybe we can use the extra money from selling jewelry from what Nolan found to buy or make this.

Amara has a small, flying familiar, so doesn't feel a need for the figurine. I think it would be better for someone else. True that a hummingbird can't talk or carry a significant message, but still. And she doesn't want the Ring of Vengeance - she tries to stay out of melee - it would be far more useful for someone more likely to be in melee. She'd be happy with the Dagger, Wand, and Pipes. But if someone else wants any of those, that's fine too. If she takes the Dagger, she'll offer her current dagger (+1 returning - so same value) to the party or, if no one wants it, will sell it. So her net benefit from the items would be 1,115. Next would be paying off her debt of 1,564.6, which puts it at 2,679.6 equivalent. So with each of us getting 6,149, that would mean she would have 3,469.4 gold left.

She also has Bracers of Armor +3 (worth 9,000gp / half 4,500gp) - but honestly could do a Mithralmist shirt (Beguilers can wear light armor without penalty) and get +5 armor and ability of concealment for several minutes per day for 3,460gp. So she'd rather have a Mithralmist shirt. (And that would, at half, give her an extra 1,040gp - for a total of up to 4,509.4gp. This assumes that either Nolan makes her a Mithralmist Shirt or we find one for sale.

So looking at possible items for that amount:

Wands, of course, are always good - especially ones that would harm undead. So her main desire would be:
* Wand of Disrupt Undead (or more powerful): 375 gold
*

Other things that she would like (whether or not she knows about them)
* Wand of Reciprocal Gyre: Has a base price of 33,750 gp, so obviously would need less than 50 charges - 5 charges would be 3,375gp (or fewer - or scroll)
* Gloves of the Starry Sky: 1,100gp
* Crystal of Lifekeeping, Lesser: +3 saves vs energy drain, inflict, and death - everyone with armor or shield may want to consider this for the coming battle - 1,000gp

* Rod of Frost: 1,400gp


Any that she cannot use for an item, she's fine to "loan" the party / party fund.

* Heartseeking Amulet: 3/day next melee attack is treated as a melee touch attack: 3,000
* Sepulchral Vest: 3/day +5 on saves against effects generated by undead for 1 minute: 2,000

I'm negotiating with Byron on keeping the dragon bane in the party given that we're still going to be in the Forest of Wryms.  But it wouldn't be of any use against a dracolich.  The type has changed from Dragon to Undead so they're no longer "true dragons".

Nolan you can use the 2000 gp in gems I gave you for a bag of holding to help enchant the weapons (Day 213-226 post 763)

OK, the thread has been created and our regular story will move on. The regular thread will move much more quickly than the Scrying thread, so please pay attention. For example, when I FF the main thread and the party is traveling to Soubar to sell stuff, the Scrying thread will still have Amara scrying, which is taking place during the party's free time.

I forgot to ask but can Twiggy get the +2 hammer block buckler. I thought I posted something before but I guess I didn't. The properties of damage reduction and turning bludging away will go well if he goes into Melee. Twiggy is still squishy.

All it is, is money. But, won't that take away from your "Bow" fund?

Guess that depends if Amos has a magical bow. Twiggy has 4k in gems to buy one or the buckler and be in the hole a bit. I can still get a masterwork bow and be doing better than the Sling in number of attacks since the sling can only fire once as loading is a move action. With the shield Twiggy can take advantage of flanking people without as much fear as being knocked out thanks to the DR properties with pierce and slashing or no damage from budging (if I am interpreting the description correctly.)

I'll hold off on Twiggy, Byron and Kalliyan and wait for Nolan to update the treasure since Twiggy is getting the magical shield that will change the party's individual shares.

No need to (If I buy at half value of 8k gp). Twiggy can put the gold on hand and add 2,854 gp out of his share from selling the magical items giving him a reduced share of 3,295 gp and everyone else still gets 6,149 gold each (with 6 silver and 6 copper change). Unless Nolan wants to do it another way or m6 math is wrong.

8,000 gold IS half book value and with the shield taken out of the picture, everyone's share will go down.

No, Doom Burst and Returning are both +1 bonuses, and both are on +1 daggers on top of that. So the base price for each should be 8,302 gold, or half at 4,151 gold. And since they're the same, that should be a net 0 gold difference for the daggers.

Everything that you all got from the Banshee was taken out of the Magic Item Compendium (MIC). I doubled checked the Doom Burst Dagger and it is indeed +2 bonus (Page 33). I will be going with that.

I'd say that I would have to disagree with the online version of this weapon. Caster Level 5 and you are Shaken for 5 minutes? I can see 5 rounds.

The MIC has the weapon at a Caster Level 11 and I can totally see the Shaken affect going for 5 minutes at that level.

Edit that. I've decided that the error will go to the Player's Benefit.

I'm fine either way, really. But I will say that if it's that, Amara would rather have the money than a better magic weapon - if it is that much more, she would pass it over and instead keep what she has and let the Doom Burst be sold. The ability isn't that great - at least not for a backup weapon, which is what it is for her - it's just better than returning when she'll almost certainly never throw it.

So either way is fine with me, but if it is the more expensive version, she'll keep her current magic knife instead.

I can't make a +2 Light Hammer of Disruption. I can make the +2 part, but then you'd have to take it to a priest who has the same Feat set as mine and can cast Heal.

No, it would take a free action. You just have to say the command word to activate the "reflection" properties of the shield.
