Basically while th ebattle is going on - and ultimately is being managed by Ovo and any one of the 'appointed sergeants' that are familiar with battle Wulfe was going to go looking for Brance.
He wanted to take wizards along so that they could deal with Brance's wizard. And Chloe, because he likes to keep her in sight - especially in such a situation.

Mostly they were, but two of them certainly used Magic against Thomas ... and not just simple stuff. One is seriously burned (9 HP out of a HT of 11). The other was forced to surrender by too many things against him at once.
