OOC (A place to meet, greet, ask questions etc).

Hey all, thought that since I now have players, we could use a thread for OOC chat.  Again welcome to the game.  Feel free to ask questions; I don't promise I'll answer em, but you can always ask ;-)

Re: OOC (A place to meet, greet, ask questions etc).

Greetings and Salutations, my friends.

Luke is a stunt man on a modern day spirit quest, ala:

Jules: "Basically I'm just gonna walk the earth."
Vincent: "Whatcha mean 'walk the earth'?"
Jules: "You know, like Caine in Kung Fu - walk from place to place, meet people, get in adventures. "

His world was all working out peaches for him, up to a few years ago.  Then, all this strange stuff started happening (feel free to read Luke's character description).  So he left that all behind, and has been 'walking the earth' since then, trying to divine answers to what he is now seeing in the world.

He is walking the Path of Caine.
He walks in the paw prints of 'The Littlest Hobo'.
(for those of you old enough to remember what these things mean ;-p )

Being on a journey is good for the soul.  Good job, that girl.

BTW, what is an 'editor'?    I see that I am a 'player' and LoC is a 'GM' ... and that MC is an 'editor', but have never noticed that term/title before on RPoL.

My character already knows the whole point of the universe is to give him as much pain and grief as possible.  It's when there is that little hope but it's just out of reach.  That you just might catch it when nobody is looking but somehow you never get it.  That the crewel thing.  So when you know this what else could go wrong???

Its awesome to have such a good posting group, I wasn't sure anyone would remember or be interested in Lords of Creation anymore.  I am finalizing some character sheets and then we can start.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.  Btw, someone did mention starting possessions.  I deal with it very simply.  You may have anything reasonable for the character you've presented to me and chosen to play.  In other words, you want a hand me down car that gets you from point A to point B, sure, so long as your character could afford it, that's reasonable.

You want a brand new 2012 Mazarati with all the options?  Probably not:)  A cell phone, sure, a basic laptop or home computer or ipad, okay.  A loft apartment or modest home...yep sounds fair.  Your own fifty room mansion in the Maldives...nnnnnnnnnh not likely unless you're a billionaire and there's not many I would allow unlimited resources like that, although it's not out of the question...  I think you get the idea though, just use common sense about what your character would actually have.  You've been accumulating stuff for years now, so its reasonable that you'd  have some STUFF and a place to put it in, unless you're a drifter and homeless is your middle name :P

For those who know the rules, I am thinking of adding this skill set I just made up.  Truth is several could be added, so if you think of any let me know I'll definitely consider them.

ANIMAL LORE

Level one Animal Handling
Level two Animal Empathy
Level three Animal Training
Level Four Exotic Animals
Level Five Futuristic/Magical

That work.  I know there is Biology, but I think this stands alone.  For Vets and Horse Trainers and Zoo Keepers and such characters I think it is needed.  What do you think?

In reply to LoC (msg #29):

Glancing over that section of the rules, I always figured that any skill set was cool if it matched up alright with the others and fit the same format. I'm starting to remember the sorts of difficulties ten year old me had with LoC compared to my go-to games of the period (Traveller and other more skill based games,) but given my adult appreciation for how complicated characters could get given the scope of the game I suppose it's a good enough compromise.

A Combat Primer

With apologies to LoC if I'm stepping on his toes...

Since it looks like shooting has started (or is about to start), let me summarize the very simple rules for combat.

Understanding How to Hit:
1. The Character has a Physical Score. That is their Base "To Hit" number. Skill Levels Add to that number. Hits are resolved by rolling 1d20 and scoring BELOW the character's modified "To Hit" number. Armor, Movement, Defensive Fire, Aiming, and Suppressive Fire all influence the character's "To Hit" number.

It doesn't matter if it's melee combat or ranged, all combat is based off of a character's Physical Score.

To Start Combat:
1. Everyone involved rolls 1d10 and adds their individual Initiative. Also add the Initiative Bonus for the Ranged Weapon if it's Ranged Combat, or the difference between the Initiative Bonus if it's Melee Combat (whichever combatant has the highest Initiative Weapon gets the difference as a Bonus). The Order of the Combat Turns will then follow the Initiative Order from Highest to Lowest.

During a Combat Turn, on the character's Initiative, they:
1. can move up to their movement rate (for us that's 60')
2. declare their type of attack, and their target
3. conduct any "special" ranged combat attacks (I don't think we have any yet)
4. calculate the character's adjusted "To Hit" number (LoC is gonna have to do that)
5. roll 1d20 and compare it to the "To Hit" number. Equal or Below is a Hit.
6. roll for damage if the attack hit.
7. repeat steps 1-6 all the way down the Initiative List.

Those are the basics.

Aiming - You can take a -1 to Damage (to -5) for a +1 To Hit (to +5)
Defensive - You can take a -1 To Hit for a -1 Armor

Armor is a negative number because it subtracts its value from the opponent's To Hit number.

There are others, but those are the big ones for now.

Re: A Combat Primer

I don't consider that stepping on toes at all, Malcolm.  Basically that's what I was going to go over with John and Nijad, since they are in a combat situation now.  I appreciate you taking the initiative (pun intended) and laying it out for them, in fact I may copy that into the rules section for future reference for players.  Not everyone is familiar with the LoC system yet, but its not difficult at all and it won't take you long to figure it out.  Thank you very much Malcolm, I appreciate the help.

There ARE other modifiers to combat, most optional, but those are the basics.  Its important to remember that combat isn't one attack but the number of attacks you can make in six seconds.  It helps to think of it in those terms.

Right now the combatants are about ten feet apart so they are NOT in melee range yet.  A special ranged attack is a situation in which one combatant wants to enter into close/melee combat with someone when they are ten or more feet apart.  The person with a ranged weapon would get their attack BEFORE the person moving to engage in melee, EVEN if he had the initiative.  So for example, if one of the thugs had a knife and wanted to attack Rhic, and Rhic was smart enough to have a pistol handy, well he'd get to attack the thug first.  It doesn't occur too often, but it might in this combat, which is why I'm bringing it up:)

I've gotten the books back out of the basement, but I haven't found the time to really re-read them yet because a couple of games opened up and I've been rushing to get in on some Pathfinder games. I wasn't really expecting people to knock over a pawn store, but I guess that's part of why I don't get people who rob convenience stores. Banks? I get that. But why rob places with no money?

Meh. I'm gonna hope they shoot Rhic and get all the violence out of their system. Murder's a heck of a rap.

Wow, I know what you mean Nijad.  I'm from Canada and we don't have people totting around guns like down here.  Still this is the States and I do know that here in Texas, it is different.  Folks do it daily down here, much to my deep dismay.  And i quite agree with you: guns, knives, and drinking are a bad combination.  Heck I'm not sure people act well enough to have guns on them when they're sober.

And again I have to agree.  However, there IS one caveat I must add to that.  Guns may not kill of themselves, but I always tell folks who tout that old addage:

Sure, they may not kill, but what else were they designed to do, after all?

That is simply MY opinion though, and that's all I'm prepared to say on the subject:P

I will say that everyone is doing brilliantly though, and I hope to be able to bring folks together soon.  Catalyst for that is already in place :)

A hammer, knife, or axe is also a weapon. just over the centuries it's lost it's weapon status since newer 'tools' have been developed. Well I am English.  And live on this safe little island that has no relevance to any were else in world.
Just one of them little island countries like Iceland, Cyprus or Jamaica (joke)

As for gun.  In this country you only have one if need it.
That is:-
1) For sport and locked away in clubs.
2) If dealing with vermin - ie farmers.
Then they only have basic shot guns.

Only other people that have guns are few gangs in few cities.

In modem democracy there no other reason to have gun.
I sure one day America will grow up and realise Free basic health care and no guns is mature way to run country.

Hell you go to petrel pumps in this country.  You fill up with petrel you want and then you pay.
Few people do try get away with not paying but they catch you in end.

John Rhic Rhictor:
A hammer, knife, or axe is also a weapon. just over the centuries it's lost it's weapon status since newer 'tools' have been developed

I beg to differ.  very few things have been created for the express purpose of killing or harming.
A hammer is a tool for construction.  Although it can be used as a weapon, it was created for another purpose.
A knife is a tool for eating and food preparation. Although it can be used as a weapon, it was created for another purpose.
An axe is a tool for procuring wood and such resources.  Although it can be used as a weapon, it was created for another purpose.

However; a sword was made for war.  It's purpose is to kill and harm.
Guns, also.

In my humble opinion, there is a line (fine but definate) between a weapon, and a tool (or other improvised item) that is used as a weapon.

Also, I am an Australian.  And we are very much like Simon and the English.

And while we are quoting, I will contribute "When one has a hammer, everything looks like a nail".
As an Australian, where people are not allowed to simply carry a gun if the want to, I am of the belief that in SOME (not all, or maybe even many) cases, those who carry a weapon will revert to its use faster, rather than finding other solutions.

As a Security Officer, we are trained to use a variety of 'degrees of force' ... and research tends to prove the sentiments above ... so we carry as little as possible.

Re: Sharing! Yay!

I appreciate all your views, and the fact your talking very civilay about the subject. It's refreshing to be able to share views on a tricky subject with rational people :D
I know austrailia, canada, and The UK have very different cultures and traditions. And If the US could pick up some of their mindset we might actually become a civilized country.

I used to work as a security guard both armed and unarmed. I have some experience in self defense and martial arts..up to and including using a sword/axe...( used to do reinactments andd Belong to SCA) as a rule, I have ben taught to " walk, talk, run, fight..." in that order if at all possible. force is only used when one, or both, parties has messed up royally....outside of games :D

I've had the ill fortune to be involved in several very violent altercations usually with drunks, violent street types,(two of the encounters landed me in hospital.) And I have came face to face with an amrmed criminal on two occasions.
(One who is now spending the rest of his natural born life in prison due to his larcenous ways...never underestimate the fat guy you decide to bull rush instead of giving him time to get out of the way. Especially if you're a habitual felon with two strikes already.)

On three seperate occasions my carrying a registered firearm saved me from a violent conflict simply by it's presence.  once when faced with a burgelar armed with the sledge hammer he was using to bash open a door, once when faced with three rather intoxicated lads who were already looking for a fight, and again with three folks I caught breaking into my nighbors storage shed walking home one night.

Also the area i live in is lousy with coyotes and wild dogs, considering I only live (50 miles from a major city)and not exactly in the howling wilds.

So for me there is a more pressing sense of needing some substantial protection from random wierdness/violence. which I know may be an over reaction but my history is exceptional by most peoples standards. fortunately I am the exception instead of the rule. and I am glad I am the exception... it means some other poor slob can go through his life in blissful peace and quiet.

I own and when I was working security carrried on a regular basis. it's not as fun as it sounds matter of fact it can be a downright pain in the butt. as for most people who own firearms the vast majority will never do more than take them out show them off to freinds, shoot holes in paper targets, or put some venision or rabbit, in the freezer.
Unfortunately it's that minority that cause HUGE problems for everyone. I have no hesitation with trying to keep guns out of their hand ( required gunlocks, safes, or other secure storage methods) and putting anyone who uses a gun in a crime away for a long long time.

I also respect people who don't like guns opinion.  I only ask that people respect my views and give me the same respect.

I preffer to let the police deal with criminals and never want to face a situation where guns are actually used. And in all honesty if someone could make every gun on the planet vanish in a puff of smoke I'd be right there pushing them toward the button. so If anyone ever proposes such a method of settling the issue I'll gladly donate to the fund.

Re: Sharing! Yay!

I really respect your view, Rhic.
You do seem like the kind of guy that would use, and own, a gun responsibly.

I too did armed security for quite some time, and I really do understand your meaning of its mere presence in a threatening situation.
I gave up that gig, eventually, because I really didn't like carrying the weapon.   Not because I might have to use it; I actually think that I could easily shoot someone IF I had to.  But I didn't like it's value; that I was constantly alert, even in non-threat situations, for the fact that at any time, someone might jump me just to take the thing.  NOT to take the money I might be carrying, not to beat up the guy I was escorting, or any other reason ... but just because I had the damn thing on me, and they wanted it.

I've been in Security long enough now to recognise those situations you've described.  And to be honest, having been there (or somewhere similar) I can admit to wishing I had such a weapon at the time.  And maybe I could have made things work out a little better then, too ... and maybe not.

Different cultures, eh.

And, of course Rhic, you are absolutely right; it's the idiot minority, the few bad apples, that really do ruin it for everyone.

Re: Sharing! Yay!

Both America and Australia had much the same type of background. Both fought for freedom from the UK, both had wilderness to conquer. America had the various tribes of Native Americans to conquer, Australia had the aboriginals to tend with. Both lands were pretty rugged. Canada was too. It was a rough rugged spirit that won all countries. It took tough men and women to do that. It also took guns.
Unfortunately, you can outlaw guns, but the outlaws can always GET guns. Right now it's not the "average" citizen causing the troubles, it's organized gangs, drug dealers, organized crime families, criminals and foreigners causing the most trouble with guns. You don't hear so much about it because it's become so commonplace in certain areas, like Miami, Chicago, Detroit. It's domestic terrorism in a way, only their ideals aren't religious, unless it's worship of the "almighty" dollar.

Oh certainly.
Organized crime (gangs, terrorists, etc) and others who wantonly use guns for their own purposes should be opposed.  Everyone (Canada, Australia, UK, America) agrees on that.

What the great Gun Debates, like this mini one we're having, are about is whether the average citizen on the street should have legal and easy access.
Like, for example, Joe Schmo walking into a pawn shop, casially carrying a .45.

Re: Sharing! Yay!

As for debates we have a pretty good one here. I enjoy listening to folks from other countries comment on things (Especially when they are as civil as you guys are)

I can understand people getting wierded out when they see someone carrying a gun, it's not exactly common behavior and you wonder "what the hell?". I stopped carrying years ago and my gun is in a safe place with a gun lock on it.

One rule of thumb, if they carry it in a holster and keep it out of sight, they are probably no threat. If they carry it tucked into their waist band or tucked in a pocket it's...worrisome.( if for no other reason they might accidentally shoot themselves in the bum

In the US Most concealed carry laws require you to keep it holstered and out of sight just to keep it from causing concern. And of course reduce the chance of it falling out of a pocket or waistband and landing in the middle of a crowded shop scaring the bejeezus out of bystanders.

A few places of business that are completely out of bounds for guns are, Banks, Financial institutions, anywhere alcohol is served or sold. and Anywhere with a No Guns sign displayed. Even registered and permitted guns are strictly prohibited.

Also permits to carry are hard to get,and expensive, not somethign your average punk or thug can get. They require a criminal background check, and a training program similar to the police weapons training program...oh and in most places, a damn good reason for you to be packing. "Must issue" jurisdictions( places where anyone who does not have a criminal record MUST be issued a permit)  are few and far between.

That's why I usually don't go into a long detailed back story until I get the feel for the game, then I can add more detail to my sketch. When I try to force a fit of a long back story into a game too soon, I often end with an unhappy character who doesn't fit in, if that makes sense. I was just thinking of some of the rules for being taken hostage:

1. Avoid challenging dominance of the kidnappers. Don't be obstinate.
2. Establish a rapport with your captors.
3. Observe everything carefully. Information is often the key to freedom.
4. Concentrate on survival. Be useful, a bargaining tool is rarely the example whose head ends up in the mail.

I figure mind controlling aliens from the future are probably not the first choices for chatting about family, like is customary with terrorists and bank robbers. So we're exploring their possible interests, foreign intelligence agents, paranoia, and mistrust of their environment. It takes a fairly serpentine brain to decide to build a lair and keep prisoners in glass beakers, so Nijad's giving them what they want, what they expect: a counter-plot worthy of their estimation of their enemies.

And in the meantime hopefully Nijad's not the one getting anal probed, sorry Rhic. We're now playing good hostage/bad hostage.

These guys aren't looking to hold us for ransom or exchange us for something. They're going to kill us, or as close as makes no difference.

They've already killed Charlotte, or a future Charlotte, or a past one, or an alternate dimensional one, or a twin one, or triplet, or ...well, you get the point. Some version of Charlotte has been taken over by these guys and we either stop them or the same happens to us.

My bet is that she comes from a timeline in which we fail to stop them, they plug her in, and use her time ship to come back here to help them capture us.

So we have to break the loop, stop them from getting her and then we all escape in Charlotte's Time Ship.

Or we die trying like they did on Flight 93.

I've got a long line of exes who will tell you quite frankly without prompting that I'm nowhere near as smart as I think I am, so there's that.

I have been roleplaying since I was in 3rd grade though. My father pushed me to learn how to play Squad Leader with him, and in the same stores I discovered more colorful boxes. Soon he was abandoned once again - why kill Nazis when Zhodani scum are endangering the Imperium?

I know how that can happen...ask The GM and Moon  Child about how complex I can make a plot/story line....but if you can pull it off it's fun to see the little light bulb go off over their head six months into a game and they finally realize whats going on....or you make it to the big reveal and they curse and growl as they discover they have been led down the garden path.... The death threats can also be entertaining.

I have to agree with John here.  THAT was some pretty convoluted crazy fast talking B.S if I've ever seen it.  I think Nijad's gift may very well be some sort of fast talk/persuasion ability, cause even though I had the villain's viewpoint pretty well set,  THAT sort of twisted thinking will given even Imirrhos pause, paranoid as he is...I'm impressed:)

Isn't that the reason to be a GM after all, Nijad?  Hehee, nah, just needed an opportunity to get the rest of the stragglers together and they are all, finally in this thread, except for one and she will be by tomorrow.  For you lucky first ones I had the chance for a reveal ya know?  Important to tell folks what's going on cause this is your first adventure and your characters are going to be a bit freaked out, it makes sense.  Having you all in one place and having your undivided attention made that possible...hehe.  And isn't villain ranting a sort of torture? Unless you're the villain of course:)
What I really am enjoying is a group of good characters who are enthusiastic and good posters.  Haven't seen Alex in a few weeks though, hope he hasn't dropped off, I liked him and his character too.
Meanwhile, my enthusiastic and inventive crew, I'm off to Oklahoma for a concert at the casino and then a stay over at the hotel.  I probably won't have access to internet while I'm there, but I'll be back Sunday.  I'll leave a post or two here now before I go.  See you Sunday:)

Re: Sharing! Yay!

Right well, I'm getting feedback, which is a good thing.  Also its mostly confirming what I already surmised:

Malcolm, thanks for your patience, I am sorry it has been tested. I agree that, for the most part, the pace is decent, not too slow, not too rushed, so that everyone can have an opportunity to post if they want (which I hope they do).  We have a good crop of characters and their interactions are both insightful and entertaining.  I'm glad you're enjoying the story.  I have appreciated the chance to GM this game again, its always been one of my favourites.  I promise that I have plans for Malcolm, as I think you've already guessed ;-)

Nijad, I am grateful for your forthrightness and honesty, and I also owe you an apology, same as I offered to Malcolm.  I did not expect the rescue to take quite this long, and there IS a way out of the cage, and I noticed you were trying to get free earlier.  I apologize for keeping you in limbo this long, RPOL is challenging in that regard, I have found, but I say that by way of an explanation, not an excuse.
I wouldn't say there has been no characterization though.  Your verbal mind game with Imirrhos, in future/alternate timeline Charlotte's body was brilliant!  And your repartee with Rhic about his gung ho entrance into Nijad's life was also interesting and well role played.  Also your discussions with the prisoner Charlotte did much to move things along and help me to explain some stuff that was going on, as well as give me some idea of how Nijad handles things outside his comfort zone.
The Alien Leader didn't ignore Nijad, quite the contrary.  You made him even more paranoid than he was to start with, and I doubled the number of guards/aliens for encounters based on how Nijad influenced him.  Simply because he did not fall for the fast talk doesn't mean she wasn't affected by it.
As for my question about where you see him going I suppose it may be too early yet for a guess, although I find some players have a very clear cut idea of what they want to do with their creations, which helps me to give them the chance to make it happen.  As for adventures you'd like to see Nijad in, I simply wondered if there was a particular genre or scenario you thought might be fun.  No biggie, I've run this game for over twenty years...geeze more like thirty...man I'm old, and never yet run out of ideas.
By the way, I WILL use all the backgrounds you have created for your characters, though perhaps not quite the way you were thinking they would be used.  There are themes with all the characters I'd like to explore; with Nijad its his jaded view of the world around him and his self esteem issues.

Again to you both, and Simon as well, I apologize for making you wait so long.  You have my word it won't be much longer:)

Whatever games might be comfortable depend on the other players, and I've not really interacted with the other players and reading about them rolling dice doesn't fill me with information about how they'll all interact. Mostly it's all up in the air... Nijad's barely accomplished an introduction, and introductions are rubbish anyways for feeling out how characters work out in the long run.

Be sure the statements are in an RTJ/Request Access post where the player has posted as their RPoL ID, and it says "visitor" by their name on the left-hand side of the post.
While some GMs opt to collect age statements in a group PM or a thread in game, these never satisfy RPoL's requirements, and do not substitute for proper RTJs.

Re: Sharing! Yay!

Spending Experience - A Primer by Malcolm Laurence's Player.

Hey all, I just finished spending my experience points. I've owned the hard copy of the Lords of Creation books since the early 1980s and I've had electronic copies (PDF) for about a decade.

I remember the XP process as pretty simple, but as I went through and updated my character sheet, I realized that there are a lot of nit-picky details that could easily be skipped. So I'm writing this as a simple-ass walk-through/flow-chart. I hope it helps you.

"Level" in LoC is determined by a STAT called Personal Force, which is determined by adding all your Ability Scores up, Dividing by 10, then Rounding Up.

If your Personal Force is 10 or under, you're 1st Level. We're all 1st Level.

At 1st Level, every 10 XP your character earns, you roll 1d6 and Add that to any one of your Ability Scores. The weird part here that you need to wrap your brain around is that XP does not directly relate to Level. XP gets you Ability Score Increases, Ability Score Increases determine your Personal Force, and Personal Force determines your Level.

Once you understand that weird thing, the rest is very simple.

Malcolm had a Personal Force of 8 (Ability Score Total of 72, Divided by 10, Rounded Up).

Being 1st Level, with 40 XP, I got to roll 4d6 for Ability Score Increases. As we all know, the Dice Roller hates me, so I rolled (1,2,4,2). I added the 1 and the 2 to Malcolms MUSCLE bringing that to 11 so that I could get a +2 Damage Modifier. I added the 4 and the last 2 to my STAMINA, making it a 21 so I would be harder to kill and increasing his Healing Rate from a 2 to a 3. Remember to recalculate any of the Ability Score Modifiers for any Ability Score that has gone up.

That's all there is to Spending XP, what's left is the cascade of events that happen because of the Ability Score Increases. It's basically like character creation all over again.

Add all your Ability Scores to get the Total, Divide by 10, Round Up to get your new Personal Force. Malcolm's Ability Score Total went from 72 to 81, so his Personal Force went from 8 to 9. Once his Personal Force reaches 11, Malcolm will be a 2nd Level Character (should happen in about a year at this rate).

Personal Force also determines how many Skills you have. If your Personal Force went up by 1, you get to select another Skill. If it went up by 2, you get to select 2 Skills.

Next, if you Increased any of your Physical Ability Scores (MUSCLE, SPEED, STAMINA), you'll need to average them again because the Average of your Physical Ability Scores, Rounded Up, is your Physical Score, which is basically your Combat Ability. Malcolm went from a 13 to a 16 Physical Score because I spent 9 points on Physical Ability Scores.

Note here too that if you have any Weapons Skills, they will increase by the same amount as your Physical Score. Malcolm has Pistol 1, so with Pistols he has a 17.

Lastly, if you Increased your STAMINA, you need to add that same amount to your Life Points because Life Points are equal to your STAMINA plus 1d10 per Level.

This is simple, and if you don't think too hard, you'll have a lot of fun.

Oh, one last thing. If you're keeping track of XP, it will make the most sense to only track what you haven't spent. That way, you'll always know how far away you are from another Ability Score Increase Roll.

And since Level isn't a direct function of XP, there's really no need to keep track of Total XP Earned.

Just a thought.

Ummm...yeah. *eyes cross trying to read all that*  Anyone have the Lord of Creation for Dummies? I fell off the planet when divide by 10 came in there. Divide what? 40? That gets me 4. So I add 4 points to what? My personal score?

ok, I got a 10, so 10 divided by 10 is 1. Add that to whatever you want to LoC.

Re: Sharing! Yay!

One step at a time, Moon Child...

You got 40 XP. At 1st Level, each 10 XP gives you the roll of 1d6.

Go to the dice roller and roll 4d6, making sure to check Record Each Die.

Then erase your XP it's now gone. You spent 10 XP on the roll of a d6, and used them all up.

Take the first die roll, and add that to one of your Ability Scores (MUSCLE, SPEED, STAMINA, MENTAL, LUCK).

Take the second roll, add it to one of your Ability Scores. It can be the same Score or not.

Do the same thing with the third and the fourth.

After you get that done, come back, and we'll go to step 2.

Re: Sharing! Yay!

Well I would say not everyone was so accepting of things, Luke was obviously spooked, so was Alex for example.  And yes, things are purposefully strange of course.  You now have some idea WHERE you are, assuming the odd teens in your camp are telling the truth.  This scenario also makes sense, there are just a lot of things going on behind the scenes that you aren't aware of yet.  Could be the beginning of a storyline, if you choose to follow it.  If not, more await shortly.
Nijad wasn't entirely wrong in his assessment of things before.  I DID whack you over the head with the first plot, and that was intentional, sort of meant to be a shock and an introduction that emphasized the danger of even being a neophyte.  Yank you out of your comfort zones and force you to deal with a future you haven't even forged yet.  Let you know your lives will never be the same, once you have been awakened.  I wanted to bring that across, soI do hope I've managed to convey it appropriately.  Its more difficult on RPOL than it was with my old table top group.  You have to be a bit more overt online to make your point, I've found, which rather goes against my nature, but I digress.
This scenario is much more subtle and a bit more complicated than the original plot, though as with all things RPOL I've done my best not to make it so convoluted that it will take an interminably long time to get to play through.  We'll see if it goes anywhere.  Great to see you back:)
If anything about the story is confusing you I'll be glad to try and explain it, just ask:)

Okay update tomorrow and new thread for Luke, Moon Child and Alex to play in.  Sorry its been a bit slow, but work has been kicking my behind.  I apologize and will try to step things up a bit.  Also I haven't heard from Malcolm in some time, so we'll have to move on without him I'm afraid.  I'll NPC him for the time being in hopes he'll return soon.

Characters

Well everyone, we started off with six players, which was one more than I wanted, but now we are down to three, since Alex and Malcolm have both disappeared without a word.  Such things happen on RPOL and I hope it is real life, and not dissatisfaction with the game, that have taken them away.  Having said that, I want to bring in at least one more player, so we have folks to rp with one another, as it should be.  I am going to see if someone is willing to RP Alex so we can have at least four players.
Is everyone okay with that?  And is everyone more or less enjoying the game so far?  If not please let me know.  I think the current story should be concluded fairly shortly, and then I'll let YOU decide where you go and what you do for a bit I think.  Let me know your thoughts if you will, here or in pm, I'm always open for discussion.

Love the game.   It's slow moving (which suits me fine, for the moment), but every post you make, LoC, is quality. Your story entertains me, your style is great, and you progress the story well with each post you make.

Keep up the good work ... and bring in as many others as you like, my friend.

Thanks for the feedback my friends, glad you're enjoying.  I do try hard to make each post count, I've learned on RPOL its the only way to get anywhere in a storyline, lol.  Besides, I'm a writer by nature, so I prefer to write posts with some meat to them, so to speak.  I appreciate the compliments very VERY much:)  They honestly made my day.  They inspire me to do even better.

I'll cast out some nets in the players wanted and see what we catch ;)

By the by; in 'cabin', I only took Luke as far as 'can see the cabin' in case you wanted to drop anything else on him before he entered it and rejoined with the PCs there.

If not, feel free to say so, and I'll just make another post doing so.

OK, I've gotten hold of someone to have a look at my computer.  If we're lucky, he'll be able to fix it without too much trouble in the next few days (not sure yet if he'll come out to my place, or I take the computer out to him, which'll take longer since we have no car, and my SO, who does the driving, will be out of town for a few days).

This morning and tomorrow morning, I'll be at work so can use the computer here to answer questions and write quick posts, but, after that, I'll be stuck until the computer's fixed.

Groovy.  Welcome back everyone.  I'm amazed and humbled that you are still around and willing.  Of course you might all just be that bored...LOL.  So then, a quick recap is in order I should think, and then we'll see where things go.  I know its been awhile and you may not remember the system well or at all.  Don't worry, I'll help with that when needed.  I'm not really a rules heavy guy anyway, I just like to have a simple set to provide some structure.

I'll write out a brief, recap and then we can get underway:D  Feel free to give me feedback about the kinds of adventures you'd enjoy, goals you may have for your characters.  I'm always interested in players ideas, and I will do my best to accommodate any reasonable request:)

Does anyone remember that fantastic scene in (I think it was) Die Hard 3; when McLean threw his car into a 360* spin, so that he could shoot out of his driver's window at the car following him, then straighten up and keep driving!!

That was awesome.

I posted the entire car chase and combat rules. Luke, just finished today actually, took me over three hours to transcribe with book propped open and blindly typing/editing.  You in particular should read them since its Luke's forte.   The Pilot check is based off of d20 so 19 base is phenomenal for a first level character, Dale Earnhardt level.  But at 90 miles per hour you're pushing it on a busy street.  This is going to be fun.

I am now living in Staunton Virginia... And we got six inches of snow or more last week... and yep, the mountains are awesome when snow covered... I live in a broad valley area so we can see the mountains int he distance most of the time. so this week I had a chance to drive up to an overlook and get a view of the valley and mountains all white and pretty...after I got my friends dug out, and ran some errands....Who says ya don't need a big 4x4 :D

ummm by the way Luke if you clip a telephone pole on my side of the truck I will be very very unhappy.... well, maybe just a little surprised....

I did see the mountains in West Virginia once, in late fall, truly beautiful to behold.  I did work with my mother in the garden growing up, that is why I like spring, early spring at least.  Um if Luke clips a telephone pole Rhic you'll be surprised all right lol.  Doug don't think I've forgotten the mess he's in :-). I'll post for him and my other games tomorrow.

Btw congrats Rhic on your new place and also I do believe you've scooped the one THOUSANDTH post.  Nicely done sir :-)

Okay another update for the main group coming tomorrow.  Luke and his crazy bootleggers turn made me laugh, so kudos for that.  Here I am trying to class things up with a little James Bond and you guys turn it into dukes of hazard lol!  Seriously though good job:-). I'm going to give out some xp as well, I should do so more frequently from here on out,  and you'll need it where you're going.  I also have some ideas to add to the skills and the powers, if thars something you'd like to see.  They are a bit out of date and need some sprucing up I think,

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY everyone :) Hope everyone and their families have a safe and happy weekend remembering the wonderful women in our life!

Speaking of wonderful women, our own Moon Child is, temporarily off line, so I will NPC her while she is away, with her blessing of course.

New round in ANTIOCH thread, and new post for Doug Lambert and co.  I want to push forwards so we can one day actually get Doug in with the rest lol.

Re: Characters

Updates to the Rules:

I found some unofficial additions and changes to the original LOC rules, written by Lord Fluffy back in 2008.  I like quite a few of them and so will implement them here.  Not only do they add considerably to the list of powers and skills but, in my opinion, they update and fix many of the more dated concepts and give the players a lot more options, without completely changing the system as a whole.  With your permission, I'd like to implement them in our game.

It will mean that, when we are through with this adventure, as we very nearly are, we will need to update and modify your character sheets, but that shouldn't be too difficult and will hopefully allow you to adjust your character to be even closer to what you want him or her to be.

Comments, concerns, suggestions are, as always, more than welcome.  I can't say I have all these new rules down just yet, and they haven't been play tested by yours truly or anyone else I know, but they are definitely worth a try in my humble opinion.  If we find we don't care for some of them, or all of them, we can always go back to the original.  I'm more about the story than the rules anyway :)

Okay so, as you can tell, we are assuming about a week or so went by while Xavier St Juste a.k.a. the Templar, trains Rhic in the basics of Immortal awesomeness.

Now, I am indeed curious.  Luke do you do anything during that week?  Do you watch the training going on, talk to Xavier or just avoid him altogether?  Alex, you find, is spending a lot of time exploring the TARDIS and familiarizing himself with its internal labyrinthine corridors and the nearest rooms.

I'm guessing that you do t want us going off into space and time on adventures, which will take months+ of real time to play out, while Rhic gets left behind.

So I guess there's not much to do but explore the TARDIS and learn the flight mechanisms, as well as familiarise himself with the technology of the TARDIS and its hardware.

Re: Characters

No, I wouldn't let that happen.  I'll sort this out easily.

Firstly, if Rhic takes the time to retrieve the fallen soldier's weapon that is ONE of his ATTACKS/ACTIONS, since he must bend down, pick it up, and take at least a few seconds to understand its workings.  An attack time or action is only six seconds after all.

Secondly Moon is using her action/attack this turn to move into position for an attack next turn.  We can therefore surmise that she is midway through her movement at the point that Rhic's FIRST action takes place, which is to retrieve the weapon.

Remember Rhic got a chance to act on what I would term a SURPRISE turn, so his actions for that turn were all before TURN 2.

TIMELINE is like this:

Pre Combat

Moon Child deactivates the force field and his knocked on her cute butt.

Rhic races out of the detention cell, using SPRINT to cover the one hundred and fifty feet to the door and position himself.

Initiatves rolled at this point!

TURN 1 (Surprise)
Puppet Master soldiers open the door and are surprised by Rhic who takes both his attacks on one of them as a result of their surprise.  FULL ATTACK ACTIONS

Moon Child takes action to stand up and assess the situation. Move action.

Alex and the crew exit the cell a bit more cautiously. Move actions.

Puppet Master soldiers take no action due to surprise, one of their number falls.

TURN 2
Moon Child takes her action and SPRINTS toward the enemies, capitalizing on their confusion.  MOVE ACTION.

Rhic takes his first action to kneel down and retrieve a weapon. MOVE ACTION.

BAD GUYS retaliate: I'll take care of that, ATTACK ACTIONS!

Alex and the crew will take their actions, most likely MOVE ACTIONS to find cover!

And that's where we are right now.  Note that the bad guys can and likely will fire on Moon Dancer and/or Alex and crew.  Moon is half way through her current movement, which is still 75 feet away from the enemy at the point of their initiative.  She will complete her movement by the end of the turn, provided she is still moving at that point ;-)

I figured.  We'll go with your second attack, which be my calculations at Point Blank Range should be a hit.  My question to you is this.  Now that you are only doing a single burst, do you want to split the damage between the two opponents who are within ten feet of one another, or just dump it all onto one guy?  It will make a difference.

Unfortunately, Submachine guns don't have a stun setting :(

It's the only way Rhic can take them down fast enough to prevent them from gunning down any of the party or the survivors.

So it's rules of close combat shoot first, and shoot to kill.... deal with the internal moral debate in your dreams for the next 50 years...longer in Rhics case...

This ship has FTL drives, it would have to in order to be a Deep Space Explorer, also to even make it to the Regulus system which is 77.63 Light Years from Terra :)  Humans in this time period do have access to Jump Gate technology, but there are no Jump Gates into the Alpha Leonis system as there was nothing in that system anyone would want to go there for, or at least that's what the Imperium believes...

Re: Characters

I know, let me do a quick recap for you:

Your group was in the security office, Moon Child needed to be patched up by the dcotor after your last encounter with the Meat Puppet guards.  Inside the security office you found a security outfit, some futuristic pistols called PPGs, and a data pad, which Rhic now has.  There was also a locker with all of your personal stuff the Puppet Master's took from you.

Moon Child, Alex, Rhic, Doctor Quan, Ensign Ramirez and the rest of the HONOUR's crew left the security office to find the nearest med lab where you can do your examination of your captive Puppet Master (who is on ice in a locker being carried by Alex and Ramirez).

Rhic is in the lead, scouting ahead to try and find any possible threats and keep the group from being ambushed or walking into a trap or something.  You went into the next compartment and found a dead body, bloody smears, and the elevator.  Along the way you found out that another member of the crew, named Mira, is a telepath.

There was a bit of a disagreement in the elevator, but once you reached the upper level Rhic went out once more and found the door to MEDLAB H, which was, of course locked.  Upon opening the door with his security badge, Rhic is confronted with TWO GIANT MANTIS creatures being controlled by more Puppet Masters.

So I need initiative from Moon Child if she is going to do anything to help Rhic fight these guys.  who are directly preventing you from entering the Med Lab.

Does that help?

Re: Characters

Okay, next turn of combat for Rhic and Moon Child, and a Luck Roll for Luke.  I think you guys are coming together, if so it will probably be soon.  I am off this week so I can perhaps post a bit more, I'll certainly do my best.

Just a side note:  I do offer you hints or spoiler text now and then, and this is not because I am trying to force you to make choices I would prefer or to move things in the direction I wish them to go.  Its because, over the years, I have learned that one thing Table Top gaming has over RPOL is immediacy.  The same scenario that I could take my old live group through in a couple afternoons of play often takes months in a play by post format.

So I realize that you may not remember some details of your situation simply because its been two or three months of real time since I posted that information.  Your characters WOULD remember, however, and it isn't fair of me if I know Rhic or Luke would remember where such and such is, or that in your last combat Moon Child noticed how the magic herb affected the zombie, or whatever.

I had a DM years ago who would just let you walk into a hopeless situation because you forgot something, or made a mistake that your character wouldn't have.  What made it even worse is his NPCs never made mistakes, and would deride you for making them, provided you survived for them to do so!  I never want to be that kind of GM, so I do what I can to help your characters be the heroes they are.  After all, that's why I gave you the information, item, contact, etc, in the first place, because I wanted you to make use of it, whatever it may be.

So yes, I'm happy to offer a recap or give you the chance to remember an important clue you might not recall.  Once you have all the resources necessary to make your choices, we all get to see how the scenario will play out.  I love finding out how you deal with the situations and mysteries I come up with.

If you ever think I'm helping too much or trying to push you along a certain path by all means let me know and I'll do my best to pull back.  I had a DM who did THAT too, my brother actually, and I don't want to be THAT guy either :)

Okay, GM ramblings done, sorry :)

It's okay Luke, I know we all have times when the real world gets busy.  It's been that way for me lately too, work is always crazy during the holidays and I've had far more overtime than I would have preferred, although I won't complain about the nice paycheques.  I'm just glad to see you back.  I hope all is well my friend.  Post when you can, I'll be here to answer it.

I have posted.

And yes, 'silly season' overtime at work has been a big factor for me too.   Along with my wife's health.

I finally finished 'Dreams Underfoot' ... and intend on reading 'Cats of Tanglewood'.  I'm slowly building a bookcase list of novels
I want to give my daughter as she gets older, and I suspect 'Cats of Tanglewood' might join that list.

Give her Honor Harrington too. It has a strong woman character in it that will expand her mind.  On Basilisk Station (Honor Harrington Book 1)

For a younger child I found this to be a fun read.:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A...ding=UTF8&btkr=1

And there's the 20 stories by Walter Farley starting with THE BLACK STALLION, and his family and The Island Stallion etc.  Girls usually love horses.

I think that is a wonderful idea, Luke.  Cats of Tanglewood, I'm sure, will be added to your list.  Also Moon Child makes some excellent suggestions as well.  As she grows, you'll discover what she really is interested in and I would let that guide you in making your choices as well.  One more you might add when she is ready for it.

The Unlikely Ones by Mary Brown.

Oh well of course the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, the Silmarillion etc by J.R.R. Tolkien, and the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander...you may need more than one book case lol.

I have 10 book cases, each double stacked front to back and books stacked on top of the rows of books, and on top of the book cases, and a few boxes left over. That doesn't include the books on cloud and kindle either. Those last 2 have about 250 books on them.

I have never seen much Dr Who, actually.   Have never watched much TV.
I'm familiar, though, with the whole deal: the Dr, many of his companions, the Master, the Galifrayians, the Technology.

And am loving this game, BTW; so thanks for this.

I agree Luke, Grandfather Clocks have class and are sort of a throwback to an older time before everything was mass produced.  I love steampunk by the way and, if I can decide on a setting for you guys to explore that is steampunk themed, trust me I'll gladly take you there.

Don't worry about being too familiar with Doctor Who.  I will borrow some things from it of course, but I get my inspiration from many sources, and the less you know the more surprised you will be :)

Knowing you are enjoying the game is a very high compliment indeed, thank you sir.  I really do like writing for Luke, you keep me on my toes :)

Re: Characters

Nothing to forgive dearest friend. My fault for assuming this was Honorverse. I knew the rules of Honorverse. When suddenly the rules were different it yanked the rug out from under my feet, and tossed me into the abyss. You reached out and grabbed my hand though.

Once this segment is over and we go to the next, I do have an idea of something we could get tech wise as a reward? It's from a world similar to Honorverse but lighter and funnier.

It's from the Kris Longknife worlds. She had a computer that was a micro computer. it fit around her neck like a collar and jacked into her brain. It grew as she matured and learned. The older she got and smarter she got the more upgraded her computer got. It had a personality, a rather smug and smart-assed personality. It helped Khris out of a lot of jams, and helped keep her humble by reminding her of exploits she had been in at younger ages.

We could start out with a barely smart computer that could do what computers do, but it can grow with our characters. It could be like the new talking devices we have now. It rides the nets we are around, and learns to hack nets as it matures.

If we got one, it could mature/level up when we do.
Having a smart mouthed ai computer as a side kick would be like carrying Rhic around in our pockets, rofl.

History:

Nelly was a computer, but "she" was designed to exhibit a female personality. She was given to Kris Longknife before Kris started the first grade in school.

In Deserter, Nelly was put to work analyzing a chip thought to be an artifact of the Three. By the beginning of Defiant, Nelly was beginning to display changes in her "personality." During Kris's trial in Furious, Nelly asserted that she was female.

Each time she split/cloned herself into her "children", each "child" took on it's own personality and gender. Once cloned out, they changed according to their users personality and preferences.

 Children:

Re: Characters

You are very kind, my friend.  I admit I do not know the Honourverse well enough to properly run a scenario in it, but one of these days I might, perhaps with your help.  This timeline you are currently in is actually straight out of the suggested worlds from the Lords of Creation book, as are the Puppet Masters.  Of course the Puppet Masters get about two or three sentences worth of description in The Book of Foes, so the rest of their creation, for good or ill, is my responsibility.

Once this scenario is completed I promise we can have a good discussion about Moon Child and exactly what you want from her as a character and where you see her going.  I want you to LIKE your character, and look forward to playing her, and I'll do whatever I need to to make that happen.  If you'd like her to acquire one of the micro computers/A.Is you mentioned, that can most certainly happen.  The technology level in the Imperial Terra timeline (the one you are currently in) is ambiguous, but certainly very advanced indeed.  Anything you might find in the other science fiction/fantasy novels you can probably find here, just ask :-)

Now, I am going to attempt to remedy the situation as it stands.  You are all in the hallway directly outside the Med Lab.  Rhic, Luke, and Moon Child are all reunited again, in that place and time.  Alex and Mira will join you shortly...

Meh. I rolled over in bed to shut off my alarm. I had my arm bent with my hand by my cheek, and when my weight went onto my shoulder/arm it popped really loud, sending a sharp pain through it. I couldn't move my arm for about half an hour or so afterward. Then it hurt and felt numbish at the same time.

It happened to be the bad arm...the one I fell on about 3 or 4 yrs ago and dislocated my elbow, and fractured (green branch) my collarbone. I imagine it's something based on old damage from then. My elbow hurt so bad then that it may have masked damage to other parts of my arm.

Okay, we are moving towards the end of what I would call ACT II of this scenario.  I will move Rhic and the Roughnecks along as soon as I have his strategy, actions, and group dynamics confirmed.  We can assume that he most likely left, with whatever group he decides to accompany him, not too much longer after Luke did.

In the meantime I have posted what I can.  Hope everyone is having a nice weekend and feel free to ask me any questions, I probably missed something somewhere I'm sure.

Re: Characters

Luke, my fault for not letting you know.  If you are doing an Unarmed Attack you can add your skill level which is two, to your Physical Score, increasing your chance to hit.  Thus:

Luke's Physical is currently 24 which gives him 2 attacks with a base of 12.  When attacking with your bare fists your to hit base increases to 12+2=14.  You can also choose to do a single attack instead with a base of 24+2=26!  You also add your skill level to damage as well.

Hopefully Rhic will be back soon.  In the meantime I am going to NPC him temporarily, since his team's assault on Engineering is critical to your overall success.  I do not know what else he had planned, but I will figure out what happens with his team and relay that information to you.  I am going to assume he took the entire team with him, minus four security drones to guard the "eggheads" in the Science Lab.

Re: Characters

Alright, Luke and Moon Child, you have earned experience for going through this crazy ordeal, so you may each take 80xp.  Rhic, should he return, may have 60xp.  Since you are both second level currently, you assign 1d6 for every twenty experience.  Thus you both have 4d6 to assign to your abilities.  Note you MUST assign the 1d6 before you roll, but you may assign more than 1d6 to an ability.

Once you have done this, recalculate your modifiers and add up your abilities to achieve your new TOTAL.

Divide this total by 10 and round up to get your new Personal Force.

Once you have your new Personal Force score, we can discuss increasing your skills.

Questions, PLEASE ask, I'm happy to help.

Re: Characters

As I often do when joining a new group, I like to point out how to make dice roller links on your character sheet.  I find them a boon to quick consistent rolling.  Of course, you may all be using them already.

Something like:

Unarmed - 2 (13 to hit)
Pistol - 0 (11 to hit)

Luck rolls, damage, whatever you'd like to set up.

The syntax can be found by poking around in the FAQ on RuBB Code, but here's the basic layout:

]dice=1d20 text="Computer - 2" memo="Hack the Planet!"]

^ reverse this bracket

Re: Characters

They sound like they're working.

There aren't any methods for them to make comparisons.  The "(13 to hit)" is really just a reminder to player and GM of what score that character needed to hit so that they wouldn't have to look it up after the roll.

All it really does is to set up your dice roller in a preset fashion.  Then you make any last minute adjustments if need be and roll it.

Thanks Hal, great idea, I appreciate you sharing it with everyone.  Jessica you certainly can put them on the character sheet if you want to, as Hal says it may help speed up combat or other situations where you frequently roll a certain check, such as Luck Rolls.

Thanks very much for the compliments.  I do have to be honest though, if you keep trying to butter up the GM like this...

You'll go far ;-)

Late tonight Jessica, I will set up your thread and write an opening post for you Thursday.

Re: Characters

I am updating the Grappling Rules in the Rules Thread.  The rules as they currently are written do not present options for those who are not trained in Unarmed combat, so I will expand on these rules to clarify them.  Of course anyone who is trained in Unarmed combat will have a distinct advantage as they should, but those who have no formal training should not be considered helpless by any means.  I will make sure the rules reflect this.

In general, any of the house rules are subject to revision should I find them to be unfair or unbalanced.  Although my focus is always on Role play over rules, there are times when they are critical to resolving various scenarios.

No not yet.  He's a little west of you currently and heading towards the visitor's center.  You should be meeting one another within a post or two, if things go as I think they will.  Its almost as if your friendly neighbourhood GM planned it or something :P

Thank you, by the way, for making me brush up on my Portuguese!  My Spanish is certainly better, but I'm now taking nightly lessons in both thanks to my app :)  Its also been a lot of fun researching Brazilian folk legends, as well as the Caparaó region which, I must say is absolutely stunning :)

I hope you both will work well together and enjoy what I have planned.  Thank you Luke for being patient enough to let me figure out how to get you both together :)

Re: Characters

Just to clarify a few details for Luke and Jessica:

The storm is coming from the WEST, which is where the Caparaó mountains rise and the border of the states of Espirito Santo and Minas Gerais.  The animals are fleeing the chaos, so they are traveling EAST as quickly as they are able to fly, run, crawl or climb.

Pico da Bandeira, or Bandeira Peak is the third highest mountain in Brazil, situated on the border of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states. It is the highest point in both states, almost 9.500 feet!  The storm is in that direction.

When Luke sees Jessica, she is to the NORTH EAST of his position.  Jessica came down the path to speak with the Park Staff so she is, perhaps two hundred feet from the TOURIST VISITOR CENTRE,which is at the base of a series of foothills.  There is also of course, a hotel further NORTH up the road from there.

Jessica is probably a bit more than thiry yards or so from Luke (about one hundred feet), but Luke is a very fast runner, so he can close that distance fairly quickly.  There are still a few blue jeeps and a quickly filling tourist bus, and tons of green shirted staff assisting the park guests.

There is very likely a pathway, a dirt road, through the jungle leading west towards the mountains.

Jessica has taken a few steps towards the west, away from the confused Gustavo.

I hope that helps a little.  You both see each other now, feel free to interact.  Gustavo will try very hard to convince Jessica that not going with him is a bad idea and, in truth, from his perspective he is right.  As a park representative his job is to help visitors and do whatever it takes to keep them safe.  In addition, he's young and LIKES Jessica of course.  Naturally he won't be terribly happy to see Luke.

Questions, simply ask and I'll do whatever I can to help clarify.

Happy New Year!

It's been so cold in my house I can see my breath! I mean like 30 degrees F. Lucky for me my electricity is off so my well isn't working or my pipes would break.

I've been staying in bed with my two cats Boinky and Mario as heating pads. They crawl under the top throw and snuggle against my feet (Mario) and my back (Boinky). Once Dobby got the upstairs door open and I ended up with him and his Sissi-boo on the bed as well. That day I woke up in a lot of pain from being unable to move...but I was warm.

My one room heater died. I found one at Menards for $9.97 plus tax. It's about the size of a box of pop tarts, but it keeps my toes warm when I'm watching tv. I just got it tonight. I still have to wear gloves when I'm in my chair with the computer. I need those gloves without fingertips...

My alternator in my car also died. AutoZone tested it, and it said FAILURE! So shot a huge chunk of change for that. Have a bad tire with a big bubble on it that makes the car wobble, so it will blow sooner or later.

If anyone has charity and wants to offer prayers for me, I would appreciate the thoughts!

Januaries always blows chunks for me. :(

Hugs Moon child.   Glad you're keeping warm and have the kitties for company.  Sorry about the heater, but even more about the truck.   I know you DEPEND on your truck, so it's worth whatever it took to fix it.   Spring is only a few months away, three at most I'd wager.   I always pray for you my friend, but I'll say extra if it will keep you and the fur children safe and warm.   I hope things improve for you all soon.  Stay in touch, I miss you.

Not at all, I just haven't had time to continue Alex and MC's encounter.  I can fast forward that part if you wish, the main reason for the encounter you are currently in is for you to understand how the people of THIS earth deal with animals and why the Waylander didn't do this himself.  There is a secondary reason as well, but that's the main one, honestly.

Hal is waiting for you and Alex to join him in the motel room so he can share what he's learned.  Your part is no less important than Hal's.  I need BOTH of you to work together to figure out what's going on, I didn't write this as a solo adventure.  Post when you can please, I know your access to the internet is severely limited, just do the best you can Moon Child.

If you need me to NPC Moon Child just message me in private and let me know,

Which way are they over-written?

Is it "Foolish, Ancient, Accursed, Dreaming, Welcoming, Innumerable, Desired, Honoured." all on top of each other and we decide which is the original?

Or is it the other way, going down? "Foolish, Creatures, People, Ask, We, Bring ..." all written over each other?

It also seems to me that there should be some way of telling between ancient petroglyphs and modern additions. Is there any point to studying the style of the pictograms, the amount of wear and fading and so on? I know you said it's impossible to tell, so I didn't want to waste a post on it if it's pointless.

OMG

I'm not sure if it will help, but left (topmost) to right (bottom-most) is how they seem to be overwritten, each of the horizontal lines contains one correct pictogram.

i.e Foolish, Ancient, Accursed, Dreaming, Welcoming, Innumerable, Desired, Honoured.

ONE of those will be the correct first word picture.

In order to deface the sacred paintings the Pai das Sombras cleverly created other paintings layered around, over top of, even slightly behind them, so that the true pictograms are no longer easily discernable.  And you are quite correct, if it were a matter of SCIENCE you could undoubtedly tell the original from the fakes by the methods you mention, given the right skills (some modern equipment) and time.

HOWEVER we are talking about magic, BLACK magic to be precise, cunningly cast so that each painting, real or fake, appears equally aged, faded, and similar in style, type of paint etc.  Only magic could so thoroughly confuse another spell, merely painting over the original petroglyphs would have no power to undo the true spell.

Now, having said that, if you study the petroglyphs carefully it may be possible for you to pick out some small differences that reveal at least some of the incorrect ones.  For each line, and there are 19 lines, one of you may roll a 1d20.  Should you get a five or below, I will narrow the choice for that line to three possibilities, meaning you were able to eliminate most of the other choices as being 'off' in some way.

Only ONE of you may roll for each line, btw.  You could roll for all of them, or you may find you can figure some out on your own.  You could let Luke roll for nine and you roll for ten, or you could roll for all of them, or just the lines that prove particularly difficult to deduce; however you wish.

Feel free to discuss it with Luke, in character or in the OOC.

Also, there is an entire cavern here, a very old one.  It is possible there are other clues to the original message if you search.  Of course, since you haven't explored the cavern there's no telling what ELSE you may find.  You do recall what Howler Monkey said 'it is very unlikely O Bruxo has left his spell unguarded :)

I hope that helps.  Any other questions just let me know.

Yes Luke mentions the snake spirit speaking of the 'Ancestors '.  Tree boa is pointing out that what the spirit said was 'Ancients'  and it was speaking of the Tupi (human) shamans, not the spirits.   Does that help?  Okay I've edited it slightly so it will hopefully be clear to Luke :-)

Boa also said the quakes were most likely a trap set by the Pai das Sombras.   So he is very likely aware of you and Luke now!

So very sorry to hear about your Father, Jessica.  Of course, family will ALWAYS be one million times more important than our game.  If you get bored, as you mentioned, and want to post, or even if you simply need to talk, we will be here.  I cannot speak for the rest, of course, but even when I do not post every day I do check RPOL daily and I can respond far more easily to OOC messages than I can do game posts, which require forethought and time to write properly.

@Luke: Well of course he does, in some ways that's exactly what the old stunt driver is, but the good news is your on his side at least, and you can pilot a TARDIS.  Also you have more experience right now than he does navigating this bizarre journey through space and time.  You also have abilities: you can speak any language and you are supernaturally lucky, also the new person, Jessica, trusts you.  Those are pretty good reasons to keep you around :)

@Hal: I love the casual banter between you and Luke, you'll make an interesting team when all three of you are acquainted with one another, your strengths and weaknesses will compliment well and certainly challenge me.  I have already had fun challenging Hal's puzzle solving abilities and morals, as well as adding some of his background to our stories.  I'm a lucky GM to have such excellent players.

For both of you, but especially Luke.  Go ahead and put your Life Points back to full.  Time in the TARDIS and access to its advanced medical facilities will allow you to heal up quickly, especially given your heightened Staminas.  I am going to begin the new adventure shortly.  I know what I would like to do, but first let me ask as the Waylander did:

Is there a time period, concept or genre you'd like to explore, or would you just care to spin the roulette wheel and take pot luck?

Jessica would probably want to go kill Hitler or something. But since that's almost certainly a bad idea, I'm happy to follow along with Luke's plans... I think.

Good afternoon :)

After some discussion, Jessica's player is taking a few months hiatus to deal with some things in her real life.  That is where her focus needs to be right now and, although I will miss her, it is the best thing for her at this time.  Hopefully she'll be able to return soon.  She'll most certainly always have a place here, so long as the game exists.

Meanwhile things must go on.  Game-wise it means the Waylander is going to take her with him for some one on one guidance.  And thus Luke and Hal will be left to their own devices for a time, with a functioning TARDIS and all of time and space to wreak havoc upon.

I am quite certain the Multiverse will never be quite the same :P

Eventually unarmed is better because you can only have a skill of one with a club.  A staff is more versatile even a police nightstick, which is more like a Chinese jo stick.  But a club is just a club so it's max skill level is one.  Unarmed max skill level is six :-).  Thanks for the assist Hal.

I just thought you'd been working on those long promised illustrations of Hal and Luke fighting off a zombie apocalypse with young hunter Van Hellspawn.

Backstory:  After eating a dimensionaly unstable spider, the young hunter gained the power to transform into a flaming demon cat from hell, while still maintaining his sociable demeanor.  This, however, had lain dormant in his system until now.  Whatever constituted the custard contributed to a catalytic cacophony of chromosomal coalignment, transforming him into what Luke has now dubbed him, Van Hellspawn.

After extensive testing, Hal has discovered the spider had survived falling through Tara's dimensional vortex only to be pounced upon and eaten by the young hunter moment's later.  However, the instability of this new transformation is slowly deteriorating the young hunter's frontal cortex, causing him to revert more to his primal characteristics and overwriting the compassion and reasoning of their young friend.  Before too long, he will be only Van Hellspawn and nothing more.  A voracious demonic beast bent on the destruction of all life in the universe.  It's like Mad Cow disease, but for cats who've eaten dimensionally unstable spiders.

This is why they've dared to violate the Proscribed Planets Dictum and landed on Earth #000,000,666, otherwise known as Hell.  A timeline where the demonic gateway was opened by Galileo in 1633, unleashing the incalculable evil long sealed beneath the Vatican.  The land is barren, burnt, and wholly hostile.  As they've discovered, undead roam the surface in herds thousands upon thousands while their vampire overlords scheme to escape the bounds of this single world, this timeline, in their quest to bring death and destruction upon all of them.

Now, only Hal, Luke, and Van Hellspawn stand between the hordes of darkness and destruction of all life in every timeline.  Granted, the threat wouldn't have happened had they not landed the Tardis on a Proscribed Planet, but none of them knew any better when Tara, still addled by a spider falling through her dimensional vortex, suggested it as a solution to the young hunter's dire prognosis.

Thus, our heroes are once again saving the universe from themselves, one mistake at a time!

So, no worries about the delay.  We've been looking forward to this story arc.

I don't think we need another player, but if you advertised and someone was interested, I wouldn't be averse to it.

As long as they're not a Navy Seal Sniper Lone Wolf who carries all their stuff everywhere they go without it restricting their movement or impacting how anyone reacts to them in their multispectral camo battle armor with matching helmet that he never takes off.

We could really use a used vacuum cleaner salesperson.  That would really round out the team perfectly.  Or a pilot.  That would be really good, too.

LOL so noted Hal Bakerson :)  I have to say those kinds of players, the ones that think they carry everything with them and never take their armour off bother me too.  In the two D and D games I run I use encumbrance rules to ensure they cannot carry everything and I make them detail where they put what they do and do not carry.  I also enforce the, wearing armour at night does not make for a restful (healing)night's rest.

So far I don't have any difficulties with that now :)  Damn, why didn't I think of a used vacuum cleaner salesperson lol.  That's a character I'd actually play :)  Pilot might be a good idea too, you should ask the cook if he can recommend one :P

Your character wouldn't happen to be a pilot, would he?

I don't think Luke is going to be able to cook our way out of this and Hal's only forte seems to be imagining he knows what's going on.

We could really use a good pilot to get us out of this mess.  Driving in with that vehicle above armed with all the guns and rocket launchers would probably give these clowns second thoughts about strong arming us.

Hey Luke :)

Yeah, originally I considered just having the Ringmaster bite your wrist, remember as a draconian his muzzle is extended, not like a normal human mouth.  I actually tried choking myself and I could almost reach my own wrists, I guarantee he could do it with a protruding snout.  Anyway he decided instead to go for the hypnosis, now let me go and check something because, when I'm thinking about a choking I'm imagining you choking him from the front.  If you've got an arm around his neck and are choking him THAT way, like a wrestler's choke hold, then you're right he can't really make eye contact with you.  I'm going to go a few posts back and check to see exactly what positions you are both in and we will then adjust the post if necessary.

Very nice Rhic :)  I'd say the old Bolo machete has a certain cache, not to mention it looks badass and scary to most opponents, especially if its been bloodied :)  And yes, your old Colt has been a reliable sidearm for a century. If it isn't broke, why fix it?  You know they don't make 'em like that anymore anyway, fancy or not the new ones aren't as reliable in a fight as the old fashioned ones that were made to last.

Merry Christmas, Blessed Yuletide, Happy Holidays to one and all!  I hope it is merry and bright as can be, given the unique circumstances we all find ourselves in (thanks ever so much 2020) and that you and your beloved ones are healthy, happy, and safe as this year winds finally to a close :)

I am very sorry its been almost a month since I've replied.  I love this game and I am not even close to ready to let it go.  I'll do better from here on.  I promise to reply AT LEAST once a week.  That's an early New Year's resolution that I will keep :)

Post up to end Round 3 and begin Round 4.

I just finished watching the Greatest Showman for I don't know how many times its been now and I am definitely inspired :D

Re: PHello :)

I understand, Luke believe me.  I'm having a similar problem right now.  You're worth the wait my friend, do what you have to do I'll be here I promise.

You did post something very useable Hal.  I apologize that I've been so busy of late.  I'll get a post up this week, I have a vacation day (although of course it starts off with me taking my wife to her doctor's appointment) so I'll find the time.  I am really sorry my friend.  I know it sounds cliche, but its not you, its me.

Happy New Year!

Hrm.  I don't think that's where Luke was heading.  He's just the cook, after all.
