The bandit shrugs. "Life is full of conditions, kitten. People have laws against killing, but they don't arrest soldiers after a war."

The bandits follow the group all day long. Eventually, it becomes nightfall.

"So one of the unlisted advantages of having a ghost mittens, is taking over driving at night."  Unless the plot twist is that she sleeps with her ghost eyes open and horses are just that good every time the kitty cat clone has toootaly done so in unspoken backstory.

"And I'd be considered a hero for killing bandits," Mittens 2 points out.

Mits nods to Joe.  "Happy to do so, yes.  But I doubt our new friends would be willing to walk all night long."

The bandit says, "Quite right. I'd rather not walk all night."

Bridget says, "And what do we get for stopping for the night? Self-confessed bandits 'guarding' us while we sleep? Maybe you thought I was born yesterday, but I say we keep going."

"Well, it's hardly a round trip job so far.  Unless they happen to be an unwelcome sight in town, if the catch up I'll owe them that drink."  That way, Joe gets to be polite, AND be okay with ditching the bandits on the roadside!

Mits shrugs.  "Don't want our driver to think we're trying to dip into his livelihood.  So it's more up to him whether he wants to hunker down for the night."

Mits 2 points out, "Since I don't need to sleep, I can be night watch."

The driver says, "We're stopping for the night. If something happens to the wagon and I wasn't driving it, I'd be in for a world of hurt."

The bandits can't help but smile like they won.

Bridget makes with the jigglypuff frown again, but begins setting up her bedroll to be right on top of the boxes in the wagon.

Well, at least proxy mittens means double danger sense for it the bandits decide to be incredibly rude during the night.  Also fortunate, none of they have used any daily powers today, therefore nobody needs sleep-Wait that's probably stretching it.

"I think out of all of us, you are the one most able to beat someone to death with a bedroll anyways Bridget.  So you getting first dibs on naptime is no problem."

Mittens 2 muses, "Would it be too over-the-top to transform into a gigantic floating eyeball?"

Bridget cuddles her teddybear. "Thanks, Joe. But I thought we were all getting sleep since Mittens doesn't need sleep?"

The lead bandit smiles at Mittens. "You can turn into whatever you want, babe."

Another bandit says, "Speak for yourself. I'd rather her stay how she is."

Some bandits fall backward as if uppercut, complete with nosebleeds. Others hoot at Mittens. Others still hoot at Bridget for cuddling a teddy bear.

Bridget says, "I guess I take it for granted I can wake up, hop to my feet and beat someone up all in the course of one second rather than one minute?" She yawns. "Well either way... g'night."

"Oh, I meant a minute extra to fight all of them. Not get ready to fight.  Still, good mindset." Joe makes no reaction or commentary about the teddy bear.

He wonders how much of that is animated puppets being more notable by comparison, or just not being the sort to really care if his fellow adventurers have stuffed animals.

With Mittens's costume change and declaration of new class, he brings out his most monotone deadpan for the occasion "Mittens was a Bandit the whole time, I can hardly believe this sudden betrayal."

Much to the disMay of Mittens, the night goes uneventfully.

Perhaps the bandits genuinely want to get through this without risking fighting the heroes so they can both survive AND sate their curiosity? Whatever their reasons, they do not ambush anyone in the night. They sleep. With their own rotating guard.

Considering the starvation worries, Joe offers a good fraction of snacks to the bandits in the morning even if he's keeping the tastiest stuff for himself and his friends with names and wagon staff.  (Everybody expects a bag of holding with adventures. Probably not so much a horn of plenty inside a normal bag).

Bridget enjoys hugging the kitty and has her teddy bear play with Mitts' sock puppets.

Fast Forward! (This happens a lot in my game...)

The wagon, the adventurers and the bandits all make it to the next town!

The wagon is then met with some rich looking man with a top hat and cane. "Ah. The goods I ordered." He checks his pocket watch. "Quite timely! You certainly are prompt. And who, pray tell, are all these people?"

Mittens 2 answers, "These are all my friends!  That's Mittens, Joe, Bridget, Bill, Harvey..."

She's had all night and rotating night watches to get to know people, after all.

Bridget looks annoyed and like she was going to speak, but she just keeps quiet.

Bill asks, "So can we see the contents of the order when it gets to where you need it, please?"

The gentleman laughs. "I don't see why not. It would be a blessing to any with a heart; this wagon is going to bring smiles to the children at the local orphanage!"

He leads the group to the orphanage. It's about the size of a normal church and contains about 50 little boys and girls ranging in age from 3 years old to 11 years old. Any older and they presumably have a job in town or are apprenticing under someone.

Unless Joe or Mittens do anything between the trip to the orphanage or to stop the unloading of the wagon or whatever, they soon see various stuffed toys being unloaded from the boxes that were in the wagon.

Joe at least, is fairly sure Mittens would have sensed if they were Eeeeeevil Toys.  Though seeing an actually well funded orphanage out here after several places that could barley keep functioning in the first place is a bit if a surprise.

Granted the past while the party has been traveling closer to civilization rather than farther from it.

"Right, just ale for the tag alongs because I don't think I can afford that much wine."  He points to Bridget, "Though I owe you whatever snacks you want for first job."

When there's a chance, Mits asks why Bridget looks annoyed.

Well... the children are very happy to receive their stuffed toys! And that does make Bridget smile. As does Joe's offer, though that also gets a hug in response. The bandits also seem to enjoy watching orphans being happy.

The children enjoy Mitts' show, as do the bandits. Eventually, everyone gets hungry. But the gentleman pays the PCs after clearing up who was actually on the job. The bandits assure Joe that while they will take him up on his offer for drinks, they have money for food.

The nearby tavern is OH so pleased to have over a dozen customers suddenly pour in. They certainly have enough drink, but they inform the group that food may take a little longer than normal.

While that chaos is going on, Bridget is asked by Mitts and says, "I know the bandits have been friendly, but that doesn't make them your friends, Mittens. Joe and I are your friends. The bandits are selfish thieves who would turn on you if they knew it would profit them. Don't let their friendly demeanor fool you."
