D&D: Angelic Preservation

"Oh my gosh you lost your homes!" Lucky mews, "Of course I'll help!"

Mits shrugs.  "Not like I had any life-or-death quests pending.  I would like for us to get something in return for our efforts - say, the non-food stolen goods?"

Lucky considers the idea and decides not to say anything.

The goblins agree! FAST FORWARD!

After about a day of showing these goblins the basics of survival, both the group and the goblins are exhausted. The goblin leader looks deep in thought. He steps up to the fire and bangs a spoon against a pan to grab attention. He has a serious expression. "I want to thank our teachers. We will live. And we will live without help because you teach us. We will not need to make enemies. We can get what we need when we need it. They asked for our non-food stuff. It is theirs. But so is my thanks. And friendship. If people come to fight, we will run. If we can not run, we will talk. If talk not work, we will fight to stay alive. But I keep word! No fight except we need to!"

Timothius is smiling and the goblins all lift their drinks and cackle!

Mits raises her drink and cackles along with them!  ...Which sounds more like a girly giggle than a proper cackle.  She then cantrips a party popper and pops confetty into the air with it to celebrate the moment!

"Yippee!  You're welcome!"

Lucky smiles too and offers Timothius a buddy-buddy arm-around.

"Sure am glad this ended non-violently."

He figures Kyle and Mits as moer the fist-bump kinda people and will offer such to them.  Mits returns the offered fist bump and makes an explosion sound effect.

Mits points out, "Conveniently, practice at hunting also gets one in shap for escaping from or defending against hostiles."

Lucky smiles and nods.

"That's about as reasonable as anyone can expect in this life."  He indulges Lucky's knuckles related gesture hopes.

He has just enough tact to not mention it was plenty violent for the animals.

OOC: "" He figures Kyle and Mits as moer the fist-bump kinda people and will offer such to them."

Epic level Kyle from the Future swoops by to fistbump with a +6 talid of Bumpage.

Timothius leans against Lucky when the arm-around is given.

Timothius says, "The irony is, this is the kind of thing a lot of people do as a vacation. So we went from rigorous fighting and risking lives to end other people's lives, to simply a hunting vacation."

The goblins cheer and eventually, the campfire night turns into bed time for everyone. Timothius turns in, smiling and curling up in his bedroll.

Lucky is plenty happy for the kitty cuddles and purrs with a big smile.  Mits shrugs.

"Be that as it may, I would rather all this not have been necessary in the first place.  Still a nice surprise that the 'savages' were less insistent on people ending up dead than the 'civilized' mayor.  Here's hoping the next quest we pick up is from someone a tad more well-intentioned."

Rotating watch is of course insisted upon by both Mits and Lucky.  He's a night owl, so he's happy to take first watch.

Timothius yawns. "Yeah... I'd like to get pay some time. Perhaps we can get the people of the local town to see reason and through them, get the pay we just earned by actually ending the problem."

Timothius stays up some, partly to watch the stars. But then he sleeps long before Lucky is sleepy.

Lucky is happy to stargaze with Timo.  Mits chuckles at Joe's comment.

"Bears dangerous, yes."

She's of course up, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, the following morning.  She's got a small cooking fire going and has made enough breakfast for her friends to share.

"Good morning.  Gave it some thought.  If it's all the same, I'd rather not return to Killallgoblinsville.  I think the best we can hope for is to be robbed and kicked out.  More likely that I'll make some remark that will convince the mayor to hang me."

"Yes, I don't think telling the Mayor you 'solved' the problem by teaching the Goblins to be better at hunting and killing would go over well."  Specifying 'but it's only a hit bonus vs Animals, we swear' also probably would not go over well.

"Being seen as 'adventurers who didn't take the job' is much better than being seen as 'rogue adventurers who slaughtered townsfolk', yes." Because frankly, Timothius is not going to walk to the hangman's noose when he didn't do anything wrong. And if he thinks that way, he's willing to bet so do these others who are with him.

Lucky smiles.  "I'm so proud of all you all.  In spite of the risk, you all chose to do right by the goblins.  You're heroes, and it's an honor to be in your company."

Mits stands proudly.  "That we are!  I second the sentiment and echo it to the sender."

She grins at the guys.  "Rep hit or no, there are many other places in need of heroes.  Map!"

Mits pulls out her map.  "Behold.  These are our options.  My vote is for this place."

She points at the location she figures most likely to yield adventures appropriate for her skill level.

"Well, what do you know about said place that makes you want to go there?"  Not that Joe has anyplace specific in mind.  But then some people would think Luskan is a great place to visit for incredibly stupid reasons.

Not that his father or himself had incredibly stupid reasons for Joe's childhood years there, that would be crazy.

Timothius gives Mittens a curious look. Joe's question is a valid one. Hint; this is your cue to tell the GM what you'd LIKE to have happen.

Lucky is also curious.  The place isn't on any major trade routes, so he's not familiar.

Mits grins.  "Couple reasons.  The town is known for frequently hiring adventurers for a variety of quests.  More specifically the church in town.  'Holy Sanctuary of the Angel Exarch' ...or Preserver  ...or whatever.  Site of some holy ground or relic or something that needs constant guard.

"So they outsource.  There's also rumor of a ruined city within a day's walk that still has magic items hidden in it.  The total ban on exploring there was recently lifted.  But there's some vague qualifier that only 'approved parties' will be granted access.  And lastly, it happens to be on the way to Grand City, known for having lots of news about adventures all over the place.

"There's leads in other directions, but this one has the most promise."

Lucky smiles.  "Grand City.  Never been there before, but I've heard it's rather well to do."

"I think that is kind of the point of naming it Grand City." Meanwhile, nobody ever wants to go to Hubrisville. We can't imagine why.

"Still, one of the benefits of having nothing better to do means you can just go wherever."

(Fast forward)

The team got ambushed on the way to the next city by unrepentant, evil bandits. After they defeat the bandits, the team finds the bandit camp and finds Hazel, beaten near to death, just to solidify these guys were puppy kickers. Timothius is able to heal Hazel, but is careful how he does because of broken bones and possible internal bleeding and such.

During the fight, Mits made herself the center of the enemy's ire with her insults and flashy sword magic.  Lucky is much sneakier and the bandits hardly ever saw what hit them.  Mits helps with tying up baddies, Lucky tries to help soothe the rescuee.

"Hi there, tough guy.  I'm Lucky, this is Timothius, Joe, and Mittens.  We've defeated the bandits, so you're safe now."

Mits is still making fun of the bandits.  With an idiotic voice she mocks, "Hur-dee-hur-dee-hur!  I'm gunna ambush a whole group of shifters and a human adventurer.  Durp-dee-doo!"

Hazel says to Joe, "They said they wanted a pet dog...." He looks over to Lucky and nods to him. Then says to the group, "My name is Hazel. I am in your debt..."

Timothius looks over at Mittens with a small smile (He is finding it harder to smile than normal what with suicidal villains and the kicked puppy). "While I do question their choice of targeting us, not all adventurers are all that capable. I take it, you look up to adventurers?"

"Think nothing of it, Hazel," Lucky assures with a smile and comforting pat on the shoulder, "Consider yourself among friends."

He offers his canteen to Hazel.  "So what is it you do for a living?  I'm sure you can guess the rest of us are professional adventurers."

After binding and gagging the bandits good 'n tight, (Leaving enough slack in the ankles for them to walk, but not run), Mits loots them and inks their new nicknames on their foreheads: Dopey, Stinky, Crybaby, and so on.

"Self-serving though it may sound... yes.  I admire adventurers.  Especially the heroic type such as yourself."

She sings a song.

"I’ve learned all the lore, I’ve been told all the tales
Ancient legends of war are the wind in my sails

The deeds of the brave come alive in the rhyme
And the myth is my ship on the ocean of time..."

Timothius is happy to see people getting along. And yes, Villains being tied up and unable to cause trouble count as "getting along". Speaking of, now that innocent people have had their wounds tended to, Timothius is getting on healing the tied-up bandits.

Hazel's menu consisted of "Pet, Pet, Pet, Pat on shoulder, Pet..." so Lucky was intrigued by the one that was different.

Hazel drinks some water from the canteen. "Thanks. What I do? Well... I'm a treasure hunter. I look for treasures ranging from gold and jewels to priceless artifacts and manuscripts."

Mits laughs at Joe's contribution, grins, and thumbs-ups.  She perks up at mention of treasure.

"Treasure hunter?!  Neat!  Sounds dangerous.  How'd you wind up a treasure hunter?"

Lucky looks a little concerned and presents the loot to Hazel.  "What they took from you - Is it all here?"

To Timo he asides, "Another good reason to not kill kill kill.  Suppose the bandits took his treasure and buried it while he was unconscious?  We'd never be able to recover it if we sent the knowledge of where it was buried with them to the grave."
