Chapter 2.8: Echoes of the Past, Shadows of the Future

4 Whitehall Place
New Scotland Yard
Monday Mid-Day
February 2nd, 1925

The elegant group of buildings, banded red brick and white portland stone, came into view as the vehicle delivering Leo and Rosalie pulled up on the Victoria Embankment along the north bank of the River Thames.

Waiting for them in the anteroom was Harry Price, the solicitor that Erica Carlyle had procured to help them navigate the legal system in England as it was needed. Price had done much more than that, in his journey with them into the Naze, and had finally seen that though their story seemed strange at first, that there was more truth in it than he ever might have believed.

Next to Harry stood another man.  Lean of frame and deeply tanned, the man stood just under six feet tall, with dark hair and rugged features that were typical of the so-called “Black Irish”, though a closer look revealed tell-tale hints of another ethnicity. Close to his hairline, a jagged, indented scar marks his forehead. The solicitor promptly introduced the man as Dominic McNeil, an archaeologist that Erica Carlyle had hired to consult indefinitely on the particular project upon which they were engaged at present.

They didn't linger long, and were lead into a conference room. On the way, they passed another room that had been commandeered for evidence, and saw many of the items they had seen in Gavigan's basement, along with a rather large mirror.

In the conference room, Barrington sat talking quietly with a woman and another man. Even seated, the woman appeared tall and lanky, and dark-blond hair was cropped boyishly short. The man looked familiar, being one of the prisoners they had rescued from Gavigan's estate.

Chapter 2.8: Echoes of the Past, Shadows of the Future

"Thank you for meeting me today. Hopefully you've had a chance to rest after last night's tragic ordeal, though I suppose no amount of rest will quite be enough," he said.

"I'm sure you've seen that we're in the process of sorting through what we've recovered from that place." He slid a folder toward Dr. Elias, with a copy of a key ledger page that they had recovered last night, as well as the letter Gavigan had been writing.

"I hope you'll be happy to know that we're mounting quite a strong case against Gavigan. We have matched his handwriting in that letter against other known samples of his, and it is a match, dead on. He may have fled, but the case gets stronger by the day. We will be sending his criminal record to foreign officials as well where we have influence, and hope that he doesn't find sanctuary elsewhere as well," He gestured to the man and woman at his side.

"I'm afraid to report that your friend, Mr. Cotton, will need to remain at Bethlam for some time. The doctors there believe he's experienced some kind of psychological trauma at the hands of Gavigan during his imprisonment there, but have assured me that there is hope for recovery given a very long time. I've informed them of his association with you, Dr. Elias, so if you wish to visit him at the hospital I believe you'll be given access to do so," he said.

"Miss Fredde ten Boom," he gestured to the woman he had been speaking to earlier, "is not quite but almost next of kin to one of the other men that is at Bethlam now with Cotton. Mr. John Amboy here was released by Bethlam this morning. I've just finished interviewing them, though I'm sure they would like to meet you."

Barrington introduced the other members of the group to them, and Price introduced McNeil, noting that the group's information lead to the discovery and rescue of the prisoners.
