Chapter 3.1: The Egyptian Museum [02/05/1925]

The museum’s large ochre dome served as a prominent landmark in the city, making it easy for the driver to find with a little assistance and direction provided in Arabic. The museum was noted for housing an ever-growing collection of everything precious to the Egyptian past, and was the workplace of one Dr. Ali Kafour, a contact of Dominic McNeil's.

After making brief inquiries, they were directed to an office where there was an open door and a man wearing spectacles, a mostly black beard with some grey in it, and a white taqiyah atop his head. When they entered he looked up curiously before he set eyes on McNeil.

"You have grown a beard, so I nearly did not recognize you." He rose to his feet in greeting.

"Please come sit, McNeil, and introduce me to your friend." He smiled politely at Rosalie, and gestured to an open chair, waiting until they were in the sitting motion and making to sit back down himself.

Chapter 3.1: The Egyptian Museum [02/05/1925]

McNeil waited for Elias to take a seat before taking his own. He had intended to visit the museum alone, but hadn’t been entirely surprised when a chaperone had been insisted upon. It stood to reason. Despite his prior friendship with Jackson, the family had no real reason to trust him. And if they knew of his reputation in some archaeological circles, their suspicions were likely doubled.

”I did,” he said, in response to Kafour’s comment about his beard, ”I’ve never been possessed of much dignity, but I thought growing one might lend me a touch of it.”

“This is Ms. Rosalie Elias. She is an employer, actually. Ms. Elias is a highly respected researcher and consultant for a number of historical museums in America, especially in New York. She is a cousin of Jackson Elias and accompanied him on a number of his notable expeditions.”

Chapter 3.1: The Egyptian Museum [02/05/1925]

"Welcome to Cairo, Miss Elias. My name is Dr. Ali Kafour. I am the resident expert at this museum on a variety of occult matters. We have a large collection of material on such subject matter, and I am responsible for curating such displays and archiving of other materials not on display, among other things," he said, pausing a bit as he turned to the bookshelf near him seeming just a touch distracted. "Jackson Elias...that name is familiar..." He squinted a bit as he peered at the bookshelf and selected a well worn copy of Masters of the Black Arts, placing it on the table before them. The pages had grown yellow with time and the cover was a bit faded, likely from exposure to sunlight, but it bore the name of the late author.

"This very one? I read it some time ago. A very thorough review on some unusual subjects that not many write on. I did not agree on all of the points, perhaps, but I found it enlightening all the same. Very well written. But...you didn't come here to discuss your cousin's literature with me, likely. You have...employed my friend Mr. McNeil here on some purpose. An expedition?" He looked to each of them in turn, addressing the question to both.
