Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

"Say, buddy," said Walter to the desk clerk, "I'm looking for someplace to stay while I'm in town. What sort of setup does Mr. Elias have here? A suite or just a room and private bath? How much would that set me back?"

Having gotten his answers, he followed Abraham up the stairs, removing his overcoat and folding it over his arm as he waved to the others in the elevator. He figured he wouldn't have any trouble overtaking the other man before they get to the fourth floor.

Jackson's probably gone out for dinner before meeting us later, he thought, Leo can probably come back down and get the clerk to let us in, being he's Jackson's father.

Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

Leo considered Rosalie's question for a moment, a thoughtful look on his face. "He didn't exactly say, Rosie - he mentioned meeting him at the hotel at which he was staying. But didn't specify that he was placing the call from the room, nor whether he would be there during the preceding hours."

Leo then smiled a bit at his niece. "And the idea that he has company had gone through my mind." Leo pulled out his pocket watch before replacing it again. "Though I expect it's too early to be interrupting anything particularly difficult to halt. Even if not - it's my birthday. I'll be forgiven."

Only a bit behind a still sobering Abraham, Walter arrived at the door of Room 410 just as the rest of the group walked down the hallway from the elevator towards where the two men were standing.

Leo saw neither a 'do not disturb' sign nor a sock on the handle, so he proceeded to rap on the door three times. "Jackson? You there? It's Leo." The elder Elias' voice was powerful when he wanted, and this was such a situation.

"If you tell the desk clerk that you're Jackson's father, he'll probably let us in, Uncle Leo," suggested Walter.

Abraham waited with the others, standing a little ways back from the hotel door while Dr. Elias took charge.  No response came.  Curious, Abraham lurched forward and took up a post to the right of the room door with his back resting against the adjacent wall.  "I swear if I started sobering up only to be publicly outdone at one of our family gatherings heads will roll."

Bishop had stayed back when they got off the elevator.

With no response from inside, the big detective had looked up and down the hall to see if he spotted a maid's cart or someone else who might have a key.

"I can see if the hotel dick will do me a favor." Bishop offered. Most hotels had a house detective, and a fella like that, often an ex cop would usually be willing to do a favor in hopes for a chance at getting their foot in the door with Pinkerton. If less ambitious a guy a sawbuck would do the trick. There was even a chance Bishop knew the guy.

Stanley stopped speaking when Leonardo raised his finger for quiet.

Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

Abraham was a second away from expanding his statement, ticking off various liquors which might conceivably be squirreled away nearby or baring that at nearby juice joints, with little inane stories about how they might have made it into the country, but stopped short when the Doc held his hand to his lips to silence everyone.  Although modestly disappointed as his self-made bad luck, Abe tilted his head to listen with the others.

Bishop could understand Dr. Elias' concern for his son, but for the moment felt no need to listen at the door. Instead Bishop stood in the hallway looking and listening for any thing out of the ordinary. Right now nothing had stood out.

Annabel stood back out of the way and curiously watched the others. They were certainly acting odd. She didn't know what Dr. Elias expected to hear.

He's probably just out; though where he would go in this weather is anyone's guess.

Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

Walter had been waiting quietly for Leo to decide whether to ask the clerk to be let into Jackson's room, to go home until later, or to go find a speakeasy (or at least the hotel coffee shop).

At Rosalie's assertion, he stepped forward to listen for himself.

Walter 'Bo' Brandon rolled 13 using 1d100 with rolls of 13. Listen 40%.

"Stan!" Walter said in a low, urgent tone, "You better get that house dick. I think someone's robbing the joint."

At the same time, he carefully tried the knob.

"Leo. Rosalie. Get back."

Annabel looked a but alarmed over what the others were saying. "Are you sure? Maybe it's as some of the others were saying, he is just busy with someone. But he did know we were coming didn't he?"

She hoped there wouldn't be any trouble, but that was ridiculous; they were invited here, right?

For a fraction of a second, Walter felt a glimmer of hope that the door might open, but soon enough he felt the familiar click of a locked door.
