Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

222 W 23rd St, New York, NY
January 15, 1925

The twelve story red brick building loomed large on 23rd street, standing out even in the darkness against the backdrop of the snowy city. Delicate, flower-ornamented iron balconies took their place all along its distinctive facade, alongside evenly spaced windows and balcony doors.

At the street level, the awning that extended outwards provided some brief cover from the snow before they were ushered into the luxurious abode within, an opulent lobby with fine paintings decorating the walls.

Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

Walter dropped off his passengers at the entrance and went looking for a parking space. He was lucky enough to find one just around the corner on Seventh Avenue that he maneuvered into without a problem. He shut off the engine, leaving the car in gear, and set the parking brake.

turning up his collar, he's grateful for the borrowed galoshes as he steps carefully along the slick sidewalk and ducks into a side entrance. He proceeds to the lobby to join the others.

Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

Annabel exited the car and bundled herself against the cold. It had been an uneventful trip, of which she was thankful. Sometimes these winter roads could be quite tricky. Snow sloughed against her boots as she walked up to the hotel, hurrying to get out of the weather and into the warmth of the building.

"Dear me, it's cold, maybe I should have asked to stop at my place after all. Hopefully we won't be leaving too soon."

She looked with interest at he paintings in the lobby.  It seemed to be a nice enough place, but she had seen grander in her limited travels with her family.

Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

After the long ride downtown, Bishop was pleased when they had arrived safely at there destination. He took the opportunity to cruise the block before circling back.

"This is the Chelsea."

Once he located the nearest parking spot he could to the awning of the hotel, he slid the sedan safely to a stop. Existing the vehicle he assisted the others out of the car and onto the shoveled part of the sidewalk.

"Watch your step."

Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

Leo peered out at the falling snow as they drove and made pleasant conversation while waiting for Stanley to make his way to the hotel. Once there, Leo nodded his appreciation to his chauffeur's son. "Your father should be proud of how well you handle a wheel."

After exiting the vehicle, Leo offered an arm to his niece, trusting Stanley to care for Annabel.

Once they had entered the building, Leo wasted no time - he went to the desk and requested that they ring Jackson's room.

A mildly tipsy Abraham swayed beside his chauffer, squinting at the hotel draped in dirty snow.  Before leaving, he’d put an overcoat over his party suit, his body acclimated to the warmer weather of the Mediterranean, and his fedora, which naturally he wore cocked back.  He followed a few steps behind his cousins, keeping his mouth shut for the time being.

Rosalie was thankful for her uncle's arm as they crossed the slippery sidewalk.  Entering the hotel, she stomped the snow from her shoes and shook off the cold.  While Leo inquired about Jackson, she wandered further into the lobby, admiring the artwork, decor, and the grand staircase.

Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

As he had cruised the street, and escorted the other inside the hotel lobby, Bishop had kept an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. Given his vocation, this practice had was second nature.

Despite the possession of his Juris Doctorate, Bishop was not as well educated as many of the others. But during his time in the marines, and now as an operative for Pinkerton he had honed keen powers of observation.

When Leonardo complemented his driving, Bishop nodded "Thanks Doc." But he knew the truth that his father would have found something to correct about his driving.

Entering the lobby, Bishop remained near the door as some of the others approached on the reception desk. If Jackson was, as his father had suggested, in fear for his life, Bishop knew precautions needed to be taken. Had Bishop had a choice, the ladies would not have accompanied them, but since they had gotten the right to vote these modern women had their own ideas.

Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

The desk clerk at the hotel attempted to place the call as requested, but after a short period hung up the phone. "I'm afraid there's no answer, sir."

"Huh. That's peculiar. Well, I guess there's nothing for it - let's go see what that boy is up to." Leo hoped his son was aware of the proper usage of a 'Do Not Disturb' sign or would hang another object on the door should there be a need.

He briefly considered the stairs, but then frowned mused aloud, "These old legs will be fine using the lift. I've had quite a bit more of a stretch on my birthday than I needed." Leo made to move toward the lift, but would stand aside for any ladies wishing to join him.

Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

Abraham casually glanced back at the desk clerk as he walked with the others toward the bank of elevators.  No answer from the room?  Granted, a fair percentage of his room calls received the same treatment.  Jackson better not have passed out unless either half of the bottle was left, and it had to be some very good liquor, or he'd left his unpublished manuscript on the writing desk where a curious relative might spend the next few hours devouring his latest discoveries.

At the elevators, Abraham stopped, briefly considering joining the Doctor and whomever else chose to take the elevator.  "The stairs for me." The more he moved, the better he'd feel.  Alright, so that was relative.  A draft from his flask would make him feel genuinely good but presently they were on their way up to meet Jackson.

Annabel followed the little group to the lifts. She watched as Abraham started up the stairs, but did not follow, choosing to stay with Dr. Elias. "The lift is fine for me, I really would rather not walk up in this dress." She hoped Jackson was ok, maybe he had gone out for some reason?

Bishop headed to the lift. No reason to walk up the stairs, and as he had no idea of what floor, much less which room Jackson was staying. Reaching the Leonardo "Dr. Elias what room number?"

Leo's eyebrows arched upwards a bit at the question, "Room 410."

Bishop liked too know where he was going. He looked over at the elevator operator and waited for the others to get on before they headed up. The others taking the stairs might get them before he and the ones on the lift.

Bishop removed his gloves, unbuttoned his coat and his suit jacket as he waited.

Re: Chapter 1.1: The Chelsea Hotel

Rosalie joined the others in the lift, glancing over at Stanley as she mirrored his actions, removing her gloves and loosening her coat.  Turning to Leo, she asked, "Did Jackson call you from the hotel, or did he say he was elsewhere?  He did say for us to meet him a bit later, didn't he?  He might have had other business elsewhere and didn't intend to return until tonight.  Or maybe... he has company."
