Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

Green-Wood Cemetery
500 25th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11232
January 17, 1925

The morning was cold and quiet as the funeral began. As arranged by Catherine Elias, the service was to be conducted by Rev. Lawrence T. O’Dell, Jr., a minister with the Seaman’s Church in Manhattan, a branch of the Episcopalian church which provides ministers to ships and sailors in New York Harbor. While Elias was a Christian, he did not regularly attend any services and Catherine asked the Rev. O'Dell, a close friend of the family, to be the officiant for the service. The Reverend, a quiet-spoken, considerate man in his forties, spent the preceding day talking to Catherine and looking over Elias’ writings.

Catherine made arrangements to have Jackson buried at the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn where other members of the Elias family rested in peace. It was said that "it is the ambition of the New Yorker to live upon the Fifth Avenue, to take his airings in the Park, and to sleep with his fathers in Green-Wood." While some of the former didn't characterize the life of the adventurous Jackson, it had always been his wish to rest with his forefathers at the very end of all things, though none expected it to come so soon. The service was being held in the cemetery’s chapel, a picturesque stone building.

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

The Reverend's eulogy began with a reading of Psalm 13:

"How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?

Look on me and answer, Lord my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death,
and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him, ”
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.

But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me."

He spoke at length about Jackson's life, and given that the man knew Jackson's family more than he did the young man himself, his words were surprisingly moving. He talked not only about Jackson's wanderlust and thirst for knowledge, but also of his generosity of spirit and his ability to quickly make friends. Near the end, he praised Jackson's dedication to the triumph of truth and civilization over falsehood and barbarism.

The Reverend proclaimed the relatively small turn-out to be a sign that as Elias was a man of no fixed home, only the world itself was a large or fine enough cathedral to contain all those who mourn his passing. His words ended with an acapella rendition of Sunset and the Evening Star, in which he was joined in by some other voices, other friends of Jackson that had come to attend the funeral.

"Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar."

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

Walter takes his place before the assembly, a bit self-conscious in his borrowed suit.

"My cousin, Jackson Elias, was more than a kinsman. He was a friend and a mentor, although my life led me in different paths many years ago.

"I always admired his dedication to his profession and his courage in pursuing knowledge in difficult and dangerous climes. He was ever a scholar and an adventurer, a man of strength and purpose and will, seeking to cast light among the shadows for the education of mankind.

"For me, Jackson takes his place in the ranks of the fallen heroes of the Old French chansons de geste that I studied during my years with Jackson at university, Roland and Guillame, Huon and Ogier. Those legends are about brave men advancing the Light and holding back the Darkness, often falling in battle, but never failing in their purpose. They often lose their lives, but never their lustre.

"Jackson is just that sort of hero of civilization. We, his family and friends, must do our utmost to ensure that his efforts shall not have been in vain, to strive against the Darkness that would overtake the good and pure in the world.

"Farewell, noble cousin."

He bows his head for a moment and resumes his place in the pews.

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

The mood at the end of the service, characterized by quiet murmurings of those few that had gathered to mourn the young man's passing, was a somber one but nonetheless tinged with a feeling of closure and relief. The small contingent of Elias family members and friends came to collect their coats and wait for their cars, offering condolences to each other as they stood there together.

After finishing offering his condolences to Dr. and Mrs. Elias, a man walked over to where Rosalie and Walter were standing.

"Walter, Rosalie, I'm so terribly sorry about what has befallen Jackson. It is good to see you again, though I dearly wish it were under different circumstances and in the company of our friend."

Philip stood over the grave and stared down at the coffin.

"Jackson, my friend, I am so sorry I was not there when you needed me most.  I hope you have discovered a safe place in the hereafter and are watching us down here as we strive to uncover the powers that have caused you to be taken from us."

He slipped a hand into his inside pocket and took from it a small, inch high, statuette of Anubis and dropped it onto the coffin.

"May the God of the Dead look after you and protect you from any evil on the other side."

With misty eyes, the Scot turned away and rejoined the others to convey his condolences to the family.

Leo had previously spent some private time with Catherine dealing with their loss and grief. During the funeral itself, Leo appeared stoic, except during parts where his wife was in need of comfort.

Once the entire service had been completed, Leo stood next to Catherine and awaited the approach of people offering condolences. He was polite and thankful to those that approached, and made conversation easily, particularly with those that he had not seen in some time. He was glad to see that Simon had been able to attend.

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

During his time with the Marines, Bishop had lost many friends. But as they were not buried at the front had attended few funerals. Instead he had just carried on with the war. He had kept focused on the battle. So it was at the graveside. While the others focused on Jack's passing, Bishop was on alert watching for any sign of the enemy.

He had kept the car close in case he caught a glimpse of anyone suspicious. It was unlikely anyone would make an appearance, but it was not uncommon for killers to show up for the funeral. Jack had been more than a friend, he had been like a brother. He owed it to Jack to see it none of the others were hurt. He owed it to Jack to see his killers were brought to justice.

Rosalie's eyes were red and puffy from crying and she hardly looked her best, but she offered Simon a sad, watery smile just the same.  After dabbing at her cheeks with her handkerchief, she gave the Englishman a nod.  "Simon.  I am glad that you were able to come.  Jackson would have appreciated you being here.  I didn't know you were in the area.  Did you read about it in the papers?"

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

Not wanting to intrude on the family, Annabel, dressed in a tasteful black dress, stood more to the back as the funeral took place.  From what people were saying, Jackson sounded like he would have been a very interesting person to know. It was too bad she would never have the chance now. She knew after this that Dr. Elias would make every effort to find out why all this had happened and get justice for his son. But she could not help but think in the back of her mind if any of them would follow Jackson's fate. She shook her head, not wanting her thoughts to go in that direction right now; the scene was sad and depressing enough as it was.

Afterwards, Annabel went up along with the others to give the family her condolences.
as she waited for the rest to finish, she stood to one side near the good doctor in case he needed her for anything. After all, she was still his assistant. She looked on with curiosity as a man the family seemed to know approached and started talking to them.

"Yes, I did read it in the paper, and Jonah Kensington called me the same day," he said in reply to Rosalie, pointing to Jackson's editor who was having a quiet word with Catherine Elias. "He knew of my friendship with Jackson, and that Jackson would want me to be there."

"Good to see you, too old chap," he greeted Walter, warmly, if with great sobriety.

"Well, I'm still living here, and I think I shall remain here. I've quite grown to like it. I have a research fellowship at Columbia and am sometimes on call to work in the hospital."

"Would you two be so kind as to introduce me to your friends here? I think there are a few people here you may wish to meet as well."

When Exton had been introduced Bishop extended his meaty paw. "They you for coming Mr Exton. I am Stanley Bishop a friend of the family."

"Yes, I'd be willing to lend a hand as well if you need. The name's Henry Brinded. I own a bookshop down the way, old books, you see. I once helped Jackson locate what some might call a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore," he added with a fond smile. He spoke in a voice that was a bit too loud to be proper, the sort that spoke of someone that was somewhat hard of hearing, though he looked to have no more than a few over thirty years.

"Those were always his favorites, I think. I seem to do that for a lot of my friends."

Standing beside Dr. Elias, Annabel politely greeted the members of the little group and made note of their names, locations, and professions in her notebook. All intellectuals it looked like; my, Jackson sure seemed to like the smart ones. She wondered if it was only because of what he was researching, or was that who the guy was, one of those studious types. Well whatever the reason, maybe his friends and colleagues could put their brains to help them in their time of need. if she had to bet money, she was sure of it.

"it's very kind of you to offer your services,"
she said to them with a kind smile. "It seems that there is much information to go through and any help will be welcome."

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

The vehicles lined up one by one on the narrow lane in front of the chapel to pick up the guests they had initially brought here, and eventually everyone returned to their homes. Dr. Leonardo Elias took a separate vehicle with his wife Catherine, so that the two could spend some precious time together before she departed to spend some time with her family in the countryside.

Walter, Rosalie, Annabel and Stanley took a separate vehicle, arriving at the Elias mansion. Spending a bit of time with them, Catherine bid them all goodbye. She seemed to have recovered some part of herself, as if the funeral had offered her some amount of closure but was entirely a different woman than the one who had received them at the party two days earlier. She thanked Walter for his words at the funeral, and the others for their attendance and their efforts to help Jackson in his time of need.

Her relatives soon arrived, and soon after did she depart with them.

It seemed an unlikely day for a party, but later that evening Dr. Leonardo Elias, Stanley Bishop, Rosalie Elias, and Annabel Ashcroft found themselves en route to the Westchester County estate of Erica Carlyle, a half an our north of New York City on the Hudson River. The Carlyle estate consisted of an elegant three-story mansion and five acres of superb grounds, all guarded by a twelve-foot-high iron fence topped with sharpened finials. Two guards stood at the gate, and as the vehicle approached, one of them - holding a ledger - walked towards the driver's side of the vehicle.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Might I please see your invitation?"

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

Leo spent a last few, precious hours with his wife before they parted company. He was glad she would be safe, and like his wife, Leo felt a calmness about Jackson's life and death after the service had been completed. Not that he would forget what had been done, but he was able to focus his mind again on the tasks at hand.

Leo also offered his thanks to Walter - it would have been too difficult a task for Leo to speak about his son, and was glad someone else had been able to do so.

Leo kissed Catherine one last time before they parted ways.

Leo was subdued as the rode in the car, preferring to spend his time looking around rather than making conversation. He might have found some inner peace, but he still needed some quiet time to just think, and compose himself for the party. He didn't want to seem dull, even though he would be forgiven under the circumstances.

When the guard asked for the invitation, Leo reached into the breast pocket of his coat and handed the invitation forward to Stanley, who had proven to be an excellent wheelman in addition to his other skills.

She was eager to get to the party and a more festive atmosphere. With all that had happened to them, a bit of fun was in order. Of course, there was a reason that they were here, but there was nothing that said Annabel couldn't enjoy herself too.

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

The man looked at the invitations with satisfaction, and waved the vehicle through the gate. Light music emerged from within the confines of the estate, and one could easily imagine that if this were a spring or summer party it would have spilled out onto the lawn and onto the grounds. Winter was, however, too harsh a mistress to allow any such thing.

Walking in, they found themselves among elegantly dressed members of the area's high society, in a residence of sufficient opulence to make the Elias mansion look a paltry thing. Servants roamed with trays of fine canapes and finger sandwiches, or alternatively with trays of martini glasses, serving them to all of those who were desirous of such.

Leo paused at the door to allow the ladies to precede him, and he helped his niece remove her overcoat before doing the same and passing it along to one of the staff members near the door. Leo was dressed in a tailored tuxedo, with a pewter vest and bowtie. His shoes were polished black, and he had black studs visible above the vest and at his wrists. His shirt was starched and clean, thanks to the comparatively small staff he had available to help preparing the family's attire.

Once they had entered and Leo allowed the sounds of the party to wash over him, he took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. This wouldn't be his first choice of places to be this evening, but perhaps it wouldn't be all bad to forget about what had happened during the morning.

Leo looked around at the dishes being offered, and found one to his liking, collecting a martini glass as well. He really wasn't planning on drinking any of it or eating all that much, but it would look odd if he didn't appear to be partaking in the fare.

Beyond the food, of most interest to him was Erica Carlyle. He looked about trying to discover her whereabouts while engaging in necessary small talk with the other guests.

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

It was difficult for Rosalie to be jolly when they'd only just put her beloved cousin to rest, but in the glamour of such a fabulous affair, it was tempting to let herself forget her grief for just one evening.  While she had donned the black of mourning, her dress was an expensive frock reserved for elite occasions.  Though not a slave to fashion, Rosalie had excellent taste in clothing.  Tonight she radiated a simple elegance that didn't attempt to compete with the flashier styles that the fashion forward seemed to favor.

Inside, she plucked one of the cocktails from a servants tray, holding it lightly in black-gloved fingers while she surveyed the room.  She knew quite a few people from other high-society functions, but none she would call true friends.  Her eyes did stray over many a handsome man, however, for she always appreciated a dapper gentleman.  Glancing at Annabel, she smiled thinly.  "See anyone of interest, Miss Ashcroft?"

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

Exiting the car, Annabel took in the expansive mansion. She had been to her share of nice places, but the Carlyle one definitely ranked as one of the higher ones. Boy, won't mother be jealous that I was here. Maybe I shouldn't tell her though, I'm sure she'll ask me if I met any eligible bachelor while here.

Removing her coat revealed Annabel's gown in a dark blue velvet that was almost black in the shadows tastefully showing off her fine figure and beautifully coiffed blonde hair. She wore some of her better jewelry with it and along with her long black evening gloves, Annabel fit right in with the assembled crowd. As she stood with Rosalie in her elegant black gown, Annabel thought they made for a fine pair.

Now this is more like it, this should be an interesting party, the food looks so good. Her thoughts were interrupted by Rosalie and Annabel turned to look at her.

"I'm not sure," Annabel answered uncertainly; "but I would be curious to know.  Being in New York, it's a little out of my usual social circles, but maybe some of the people are visiting and came for the party. I would think you know more then a few here," she said with a bit of curiosity in her voice.

When his wife was alive she had adored parties. She had loved to show off her dashing military man. Bishop had learned to feign enjoying himself and appearing comfortable. So now Bishop did his best to seem to be enjoying himself.

Looking over at Rosalie it was hard for Bishop not to be reminded of his late wife. The aging marine wanted a whiskey and he wanted to ask Rosalie to dance. But denied himself both.

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

Most people that knew him greeted Leo as if nothing was amiss, though a few individuals that bothered to stay up to date on the news did pause to offer their condolences to him privately. Otherwise, the matter seemed a rather routine social affair. Scanning the crowd, Leonardo was able to easily spot the young heiress Erica Carlyle, who stood on the opposite side of the large hall in which many of the guests seemed to be congregating in scattered groups. Erica herself seemed to be floating from group to group, speaking not long to each one. The young ladies seem to catch a fair amount of eyes from the looks they seem to be getting.

He looked at the other three. "Now seems like a good time to attempt to offer our thanks for the invitation at the very least." Leo waited a moment to see if anyone else had an opinion on what they should do next.

Annabel shook her head at Rosalie's answer. "No, I don't see anyone at the present, which is probably a good thing. Oooo look, there's Miss Carlyle. Wow, look at that dress, she certainly knows how to make an appearance.," She said this with maybe a hint of jealous envy in her voice. "Hopefully she will be obliging to meet with you Dr Elias or that will make our investigation all the more harder without her information." Annabel reached for a glass of champagne as a tray passed by. Taking a sip, she motioned to the good Doctor to proceed. Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

"Good evening, Miss Ashcroft," came a familiar voice from a gentlemen who approached the group.

He turned his attention next to Leonardo. "Good evening, Dr. Elias. I don't believe we've had the pleasure of meeting, but please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Bradley Grey, and I represent Miss Carlyle and her holdings in many capacities. Allow me also to add that I am sorry for your loss. Your son Jackson was ahead of me at the Columbia undergraduate program, and I never had the chance to meet him, though his reputation lived on after his graduation."

"I'm here, however, because one of Miss Carlyle's holdings received a phone call from Miss Ashcroft made on your behalf stating an urgent need for a meeting with Miss Carlyle concerning some information you had on the ill fated expedition of her brother's some years ago. When I first heard the message, I thought it some attempt by a journalist to get at Miss Carlyle - there are many of those that come through on various pretenses, you understand. But...now that you are here in the flesh when you've every reason to have taken a pass on the invitation...well, let it suffice to say that I'm convinced. Given that the matter concerns such a sensitive subject, Miss Carlyle would like to speak to you in private to hear what you have to say. Does that sound acceptable?" He smiled politely again at Annabel, then at Rosalie, and gave a nod to Stanley.

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

Annabel turned to look at the man approaching who spoke her name. She didn't know him but he seemed to know her. This wasn't surprising, her beauty attracted many men and they seemed to remember her long after her memory of them had faded. Her look of uncertainty turned to one of recognition as she finally dredged up his name from her memories; Bradley, my it had been a while since she had seen him last. She fixed her blue eyes on him and gave the young man a polite but not unfriendly smile.

"Mr. Grey, my it has been a while hasn't it. It's a pleasure to see you again, what beings you to this lovely gathering?"

She listened as he spoke with Doctor Elias and his reason for being here. As Bradley spoke, Annabel felt a thrill go through her that her efforts hadn't been in vain. Her smile to him became warmer and more pleased. As he finished, she nodded her assent, perhaps a little too eagerly, but she didn't care.

"That would be wonderful Bradley, er I mean Mr. Grey," she said as she blushed slightly correcting herself. "Miss Carlyle would be helping us out a great deal by doing this."

"Good evening, sir." Leo responded to the man's greeting before he introduced himself, and offered to shake Bradley's hand as he did. "Thank you for your condolences, and it's nice to meet you Mister Grey." Leo gestured toward the other two members of the group that had joined the festivities. "If I may introduce my niece, Miss Rosalie Elias. And Mister Stanley Bishop, widower of my niece Eleanor."

Leo listened with interest concerning the offer that Mr. Grey made on behalf of Erica Carlisle, nodding throughout to indicate his understanding of what was being conveyed. Leo tried to keep his face from indicating any emotions that he felt, though he was happy to hear of the offer.

He briefly turned toward Annabel as she provided her thoughts. "Quite right, Miss Ashcroft. And thank you for the offer Mister Grey. We are certainly interested in speaking with Miss Carlyle about her brother's expedition, and it's not something that should be discussed among party guests. When would she like to conduct such a meeting?"

Bishop offered a nod of recognition, but he did not speak. This was Leonardo's dance, Stanley would not cut in unless the beat changed. But when Dr. Elias mentioned his late wife Bishop thought of here and Jack and did his best to hide the pain.

Bradley Grey had managed to succeed as an attorney, something at which Stanley had failed. Bishop was  not certain which of them that reflected on worse. Truth be told Stanley enjoyed his work at Pinkerton. He wondered how a man like Bradley Grey would do in his world, and asked the same question of himself.

"A pleasure to meet you, Mister Grey," she offered.  Her attention shifted slightly to Annabel and she smirked.

As one of the servers passed, she deposited her glass and collected another martini, holding it delicately in her fingers.  She wasn't usually one for drinking heavily, but the stress of the day called for something more than punch.

"A pleasure to meet you as well, Miss Elias," he said when introduced, and shook Stanley's hand and said, "and yourself, Mr. Bishop."

Listening to Dr. Elias and Miss Ashcroft's expressions of assent, he simply nodded along thoughtfully before speaking himself. "If you have a few minutes, she would like to speak with you tonight itself, either briefly or at length, as time permits."

"In any case, please help yourself to the drinks and the food that is making its way around. If at some point in the next hour you make your way to the library, which is the second room on the right down that hallway," he said, pointing in a certain direction, "I will keep Miss Carlyle appraised and she will come and find you, though it may take a few minutes for her to extract herself from whatever conversation she may be entangled in at the time. Does that sound suitable, Dr. Elias?"

"That sounds most promising.  I hope she is as receptive to our inquiries as she has been to our request for a meeting."  Rosalie knew all too well just how stubborn women of high rank and power could be.  Sometimes they would not acquiesce no matter how convincing the argument or persuasive the speaker.  Turning her head, she took a sip of her drink as she surveyed the room.

"That does give us a little while to enjoy the party, if such a thing could be accomplished on a day like this."  She did not need to look at her uncle to know what he must be feeling.  Her aunt was physically and emotionally drained.  Most of them were.  Though the wound was still fresh for her, Jackson's death had not yet settled to the ache of loss.  The search for his killer kept his memory alive and her spirit from the depths of depression. Staying occupied kept her mind off his death and her grief from overwhelming her.

Focusing her attention on Stanley, she tilted her head a fraction.  "I am inclined to dance at least once while we're here as I haven't had the opportunity in some time.  Are you going to ask me?"

Annabel watched Bradley go off to where Miss Carlyle was, then turned to the others. She nodded in response to Rosalie.

"I think that is an excellent idea, it's been so crazy the last couple of days. So I guess we'll meet again in a hour?" she looked at her watch to check the time. "Well I guess I'll make the most of it then, if you will excuse me. "Oh and have fun dancing you two," she said to Rosalie and Stanley with a sly smile.

Heading away from the group, Annabel walked over to where Bradley stood. She gave the man a pleasant smile which highlighted her pretty face.

"So Mr. Grey," she asked curious, "are you not permitted to enjoy the party? It would be a shame to let such a lavish event go to waste.  You seem to have done well for yourself, tell me, how did you come to be Miss Carlyle's....assistant? Helper? What would you call yourself?"

She looked a little embarrassed and quickly worked on fixing her error. "Being in such a position reflects your accomplishment and success and it is one to be admired." She gave him another smile hoping all was forgiven.

"Now as for the party, I guess your definition of fun and mine are different," Annabel said in a teasing yet playful tone; "If you call hovering near Miss Carlyle instead of dancing with a pretty lady fun. I am here to rectify that if you I can pull you away from your duties for a moment." She batted her pretty blue eyes and looked at him expectantly.

Leo watched the others all split off to enjoy themselves. He felt a momentary pang of longing for Kate - it would have been better for them to be together right now. But he was happy she was far from danger.

Leo looked around for anyone else that might possibly be of use during their investigations. These were guests of Miss Carlyle, and perhaps some of them might be known acquaintances of those that went missing. Barring that, Leo would make some small talk about the weather, Columbia, and the newest fashion and dance fads that he failed to understand. Or perhaps speak with any of the frequent customers of the family business that might be in attendance.

"No forgiveness necessary, Miss Ashcroft," he said. Bradley considered the proposition for a moment, and then quickly finishing his drink, deftly placed it on the tray of a passing server before extending his hand towards Annabel. "But I do believe that I'll take you up on that dance."

Bradley Grey wasn't a man that was often thought as handsome, though he wasn't ugly either. A rather plain looking fellow, he was nevertheless expertly groomed and exquisitely dressed in garments of exceedingly high quality. As they began to dance, it became obvious that he was no stranger to this. He was nimble on his feet, and capable of taking the lead or letting her do so when the dance called for it.

Annabel gave a slight laugh, "Considering how hard it is to get in touch with her, I would say a very private person; maybe even a bit lonely," she said with a touch of sadness in her voice. "I mean when one surrounds oneself with walls and people who block attempts to get in touch with you, how in the world can they ever form connections, relations, or even make friendships? I mean look at her;" She turned her head to look at Erica mingling with yet another group of people. "She's not even getting to enjoy her own party; getting to dance or relax, she has to constantly keep up an appearance."

Annabel's voice now became tinged with even more of a sadness, an understanding. "I suppose it comes with her status, and that's something I understand. I left my home, my family to get away from all that, to try and make something more of myself, which is why I'm here in New York." She looked at Bradley with a more confident demeanor. "It hasn't been easy I'll tell you, but what it also hasn't been is dull or lonely. I've made friends, met interesting people and have done interesting things; all which would never have happened it I had stayed in the trappings of my society."

Finishing, she turned the conversation back to Erica. "So tell me Mr. Grey, am i right about her? I would be most glad to hear if I am wrong."

"What makes you think she isn't enjoying the party, doesn't she appear to be having a good time?" Erica Carlyle was all smiles, and engaged in the conversations she was having.

"Perhaps your way of enjoying a party is different from that of others. Miss Carlyle did not have the luxury of leaving her family, having lost both parents and older brother. The Carlyle fortune and holdings fell into her hands, and I suppose she might have sold them all outright for some princely some to avoid having to handle the work of it - and have been taken care of for life with that money without a care in the world. But she chose to take stewardship of the company, control of the estate, and has done a remarkable job with it. Have you thought that perhaps she isn't "keeping up appearances" but that she appears to be who she is?"

To have they say, 'been dealt such a hand,' and still have been able to find some measure of happiness is admirable indeed."

She looked thoughtfully for a moment at Miss Carlyle as they once more passed in sight of her. "It's a shame that she is so hard to reach, I think she would be a most interesting woman to know and talk with; it might be interesting to hear her thoughts on a number of things."

"Tell me Mr. Grey," Annabel asked changing the subject and turning back to look at him; "where did you learn to dance so well, you are most graceful. I'm surprised you are not here with some elegant lady. Well you are right now," she said with a small laugh, "but I mean normally, or are you?   On the subject of Miss Carlyle, Annabel said. "I think Dr. Elias will mostly likely be dominating Miss Carlyle's time with his questions about her brother. I would be very surprised if she had anytime for me, which is fine, we are here for Dr. Elias after all. You are right though, we did go to Barnard together but I'm afraid I didn't talk or socialize with her much; different social circles and all that. Honestly, I would be surprised if she remembered me."

As the dance finished, she moved off to the side with him.

"What a shame Mr. Grey," Annabel said in a sympathetic tone to his reply about himself. "From what I've seen, I think you would make a fine husband to some lucky woman one day. But as you say, if you let work occupy so much of your time, it may never happen. Your accomplishments are all well and good Bradley, but don't let them keep you from accomplishing other equally important ones too. It's good to share them with someone special."

She blushed a bit as she turned away from him feeling a little embarrassed. "Listen to me, I'm one to talk. I purposely avoided being paired up for coming here and looking to make my own accomplishments; so I guess I'm kind of in the opposite situation. Kind of ironic isn't it. Of course," she continued, "I DO eventually want to marry some day, but when I'm ready, not when my Mother says I am. When that will be though it's hard to say, maybe my little adventure will bring someone into my life, one can hope, right?"

"How nice of you to ask, Stanley,"
she replied, a hint of amusement in her voice.  Taking his hand, she fell into step with him on the dance floor.  She was a passable dancer, light enough on her feet to not step on any toes, and at ease in his arms.  She watched him as they danced, studying his unreadable expression, and wondering what he was thinking.  After a few moments of weaving through the others in silence, she finally spoke.  "When is the last time you have attended such a fancy soiree?"

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

Stanley led Rosalie to the dance floor, her small hand disappearing in his big mitt. He too was a passable dancer, a bit rusty but he had once enjoyed dancing and he found himself enjoying it again. Stanley was a large man and dwarfed Rosalie as they danced.

As dark as the last few days had been Rosalie had been a bright light. It was just a simple dance but it was much more to him.

"It has been a long time."

"The Elias family always invites me but work keeps me away. I can't remember the last time I danced."
Bishop replied. The truth was he remembered his last dance. He was shipping off to France and the Regiment had a going away dance at the officer's club. Oddly it was a happy event, marines off to war. He had said good bye to his wife, his family. After that everything changed.

As they danced, despite everything, Bishop realized for the first time in a very long time he was smiling.

She answered his smile with one of her own.  It almost felt like a betrayal to experience even a little happiness when they had only just buried her beloved cousin, but a part of her knew that Jackson would have approved.  He wasn't one to linger over sorrow and grief.  He preferred to keep moving, keep exploring, and push through the next big adventure.

"It is always nice when you come to visit,"
she replied sincerely.  "I would tell you that your work keeps you away entirely too much, but I am very guilty of the same poor excuse.  Mother was thrilled when I took a position in the city.  I'd say that she'd never approved of my jaunts with Jackson, but that would be a lie.  She followed my father about on his adventures for years before settling down."

"Do you remember how young we were when we first met?  I was thinking of that trip today when everyone was sharing their memories of Jackson."

"Nothing wrong with knowing your strengths," he said at her appraisal of her own attractiveness. "If you know what people want from you, you can use that to your advantage."

"As for me, well, the problem you have with beauty isn't something I'm likely to have - though I may have a similar problem with money. I'd need to find a woman I didn't think wanted me for my money alone. Perhaps just as difficult a task as your own."

Leo listened to the plans of Doctor Taft with interest. "My, that sounds like a wonderful plan! To see that much of Europe without an agenda besides seeing the sights." Leo's previously joyful appearance changed to an inquisitive look, curiosity evident on his face. "This may seem to come out of left field, Doctor, but since we're here, well, I'm curious. "Doctor Huston? Yes, I can see why he would come to mind just now. We were good friends for a time, but that was some years back, wasn't it? I suppose I know a good deal of him. He was a psychiatrist like yourself, but later in his career, though of course you know that. He graduated with honors from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Before psychiatry, he had a circulatory ailments practice, but I suppose it wasn't sufficiently interesting for him. A great loss to the field when he died in Africa with that cursed expedition. " He paused for a moment, and then spoke again.

"I'm sorry, I ramble on - surely you know these things. What do you wish to know of him in particular?"

Annabel looked surprised as she kept in step. "You mean manipulate them Mr. Grey? In the hopes that they would have a chance with me maybe?" She frowned, "I don't know, I am finding it both a strength and a curse sometimes depending on the situation. I ask myself, is it me they are interested in or just my looks and the chance of being with someone pretty. Your situation seems almost the came Mr. Grey; I think having an excess of something other people desire doesn't seem to be a good thing sometimes."

"As for you Mr. Grey, if it is your money that is an issue, way not seek a lady who already has some and does not need yours. Being in Miss Carlyle's social circles, one may cross your path who is eager to find a decent husband."

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

Stanley felt very flattered when Rosalie seemed to say she enjoyed his company. He did his best not to let the conversation throw off his dancing. He had not allowed himself to feel anything like this for years.

Stanley thought of the trip. Thought about the man he was back then. Before the Great War, before he lost his wife and his child "That was a long time ago, but you are still young. Heck you were just a kid back then. I was worried sick that something would happen to you that trip. But you were so brave so curious and such a bright light .."

".. you still are bright light."
Stanley said.

"You are very kind for saying so."  Rosalie had the decency to blush at the compliment.  "I am not that much younger than you," she pointed out, "but I was very young on that trip -- just out of Brearley School for Girls.  I'm afraid I inherited the Elias curiosity and thirst for adventure.  Lucky that you and Bo were both there to keep me out of trouble.  Heaven knows that Jackson had his nose so buried in the local culture that he barely noticed his own issues."

"We did have some close calls, as I am certain you remember.  Or at least they were close to a young, inexperienced girl.  If I was brave, it was because I was certain that you would never let anything happen to me."   She turned with him as the steps changed direction, easily following.  "Whether from the internal strength with which you were born or the shaping of your resolve from life experiences, men like you are the solid foundation of any undertaking.  I saw that again the other evening at the hotel when you reacted so calmly in the face of certain danger."

Stanley nodded and smiled again slightly "You Elias are all alike."

"Jack loved a good mystery. He would follow it anywhere."

When she mentioned the hotel Stanley shrugged slightly and answered with no sign of pride or ego "I guess that is what I do best."

As he said it he thought of all those he had failed to protect. He wish that the conversation had not turned back to the job at hand so quickly, but he knew that the Elias family was not going to rest until this mystery was solved.

Bishop did not care so much about the mystery as he did putting an end to the killings and keeping the others safe.

As the music stopped and started again Stanley looked into Rosalie's eyes and smiled "One more dance?"

"I would love to."  She returned his smile and remained close, lightly resting one gloved hand upon his broad shoulder while her other stayed in his grasp.

Briefly she glanced to the crowd surrounding them to search for Annabel and smiled when she found her dancing.  She sought out Leo as well, but could not see him beyond the press of people.  Though worried for her uncle, she knew he wouldn't have left home if he hadn't felt up to it.  He was the best gauge of his mental state, after all.

Her attention flitted back to Stanley after only a moment.  "You are surprisingly light on your feet for such a formidable man.  Who taught you to dance?"

Annabel thought for a moment on Bradley's words as she went through the motions in time with the music. "I can see your point Mr. Grey. I suppose my looks can be a passive thing if I wish them to be and rely on other means to better a situation. But then again it really depends on the person or persons I am dealing with." She gave a little huff, "I can't really control their initial attraction of me, only what impression I make after that. So in a way like it or not, I am manipulating them without really doing anything."

"I think," she added, "that your wealth acts somewhat the same to women with or without you doing anything to motivate it. I guess having an excess of something people desire will do that. Which is why my dear Mr. Grey," she said with a smile, "you need to make more of an effort to mingle at these functions where the women are less likely to be so manipulated by your wealth."

"Not so, my dear. Having an inherent advantage is not the same as manipulation, else I would say that every appetizing meal set before me manipulated me into eating. You possess something that a meal does not - intellect and a power of will. But if you recognize that a man, or a woman for that matter, is attracted to you then you might manipulate that situation for some gain. Negotiating a price. Extracting information. That is manipulation, not merely looking or being a certain way," he said to her first point.

"I suppose I should," he said as the song came to an end. "But for now, I have some other matters to attend to. Thank you for the dance, Miss Ashcroft. Perhaps we'll meet again tonight, or another time."

As they stopped, Annabel curtseyed to Bradley. "Oh, of course Mr. Grey. I've probably taken up enough of your time, you're on duty after all." She gave him a warm smile which showed off her beautiful face quite well and squeezed his hand.  "Thank you for the dance and conversation, I most enjoyed it. We'll let you know when we are ready for Miss Carlyle."

Watching him head off to his duties, Annabel looked around for the others to see what they were doing. She spotted Rosalie and Stanley on the dance floor and gave a satisfactory nod; good, he DID ask her to dance. It's good they got some enjoyment tonight. She looked around for Dr. Elias but did not see him from where she was. She figured he was probably mingling somewhere.

Feeling a bit thirsty and peckish, Annabel made her way over to the punch bowl. Taking a glass as well as a small plate of food, she quietly ate and watched the activity around her. Maybe when she was done she would find Dr. Elias and see if he was ready yet.

Stanley was glad for another dance. He knew that there was likely to be some dark days ahead and this was a happy moment. They had a good idea who was behind Jack's death, it was only a question of how they could resolve the matter. This all seemed a bit of a detour to Stanley, but he hoped that once Bo was mended the two of them would take a more direct approach.

Stanley was put a bit off by Rosalie's question and unsure how to answer. "Truth is some I learned some in dance halls, but mostly because Eleanor loved to dance. Haven't danced in a long time, didn't know I missed it till now."

Going to the room indicated previously by Grey, they find that it is empty, though the door was plainly open for anyone to enter and peruse.   Seeing that the others were ready, Annabel followed them to the meeting room. From the looks of it, it did not look like Miss Carlyle would be free for a bit so it left the little group time to look about the room. Annabel glanced here and there but nothing really caught her eye, she really was not in the mood for reading. taking a seat in one of the chairs, she decided to sit and wait for Bradley and Miss Carlyle.

Leo smiled as he saw Annabel and Rosalie again, though walked quietly toward the library. Once there he looked around at the others. "I hope you've been able to find some enjoyment in the festivities." He gave a cursory look at the spines of some of the books contained in the library. Mostly browsing to understand what sorts of books the Carlyle family felt were important to purchase and maintain.

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

Some twenty minutes later, Erica Carlyle entered the room. A model of strength and self possession, her bearing was not that of confidence that the unproven often times attempted to exude, but a poise that came with a true and natural ownership of her situation. Her carriage was regal, and though she did not flaunt it, she was keenly aware that many of the men and women at this gathering courted her attention for various endeavors.

Still, her face was not the steely mask of a captain of industry. Instead, a reserved and polite smile graced her pleasant countenance as she looked to everyone in silent greeting. Genuine warmth and sympathy showed on her face and laced itself into her tone when first she addressed Dr. Elias. "Dr. Elias, thank you for coming. I heard of what happened recently, and you and Mrs. Elias have my sincerest condolences. As do all of you." At the last, she looked around at the others, acknowledging that her condolences were to them as well.

"I never knew your son Jackson, but I have borne more than my share of loss and grief in this lifetime," she said, referring to her brother and her parents, both of whom passed before their time.

Rosalie pulled a curious little book from one of the shelves she was browsing and was thumbing through it just as Erica Carlyle entered.  She turned and offered the woman a nod of thanks at her condolences.  "Thank you for meeting with us, Ms. Carlyle.  We know you have guests to attend, so we will not take up too much of your time."  She looked to Leo to broach the subject, knowing he'd be the most diplomatic about it.

Glancing back to the book in her hand, she turned a few pages, looking through the margins.  She'd read some of Poe's work, but wasn't intimately familiar with everything he'd written.  She was mostly curious as to why it was nestled between Carlyle's expensive volumes.

Leo gave Erica a wan smile at the mention of Jackson and nodded at her condolences. "Thank you for your condolences, Miss Carlyle. It's all been a bit of a shock. And thank you for your invitation as well, we have all been enjoying your hospitality. Your estate is a magnificent place for such a gathering."

Leo paused and then looked at the others briefly before returning his gaze to Erica. "I believe the loss and grief that you previously experienced may have some relevance to our own. I trust Mister Gray indicated the reason why we had tried to contact you. The short of it is that Jackson indicated that he had discovered something about the ill-fated expedition led by your brother all those years ago."

Leo paused and waited to see if there was any reaction from their hostess.

Rosalie closed the book in her hand, but kept it in hand.  "It is something of a thin thread, Ms. Carlyle, but we thought you should hear of it.  As you are already aware of the public circumstances surrounding my cousin's passing, I will spare you the details.  Suffice it to say that those of us that knew him well are most interested in finding those responsible for his murder.  I am certain you understand the sentiment."  Her eyes drifted to the books briefly as she collected her thoughts.

"My cousin was an expert in the occult and was in the midst of research for his next book.  During his investigations into the disappearance of your brother's expedition, he interviewed a man that told him he'd seen Jack Brady alive and well in Hong Kong just two years ago.  He surmised that if Mister Brady was alive, then perhaps other members of the expedition were alive.  At worst, Brady would be able to give an actual accounting of what truly happened."

"Also included in my cousin's notes was a particular phrase mentioning your brother and the books that are in his safe.  It might seem rather silly, but we were wondering if you might know of a book or books that your brother left behind that might pertain to the occult or other tribal traditions in the area where the expedition disappeared."

Erica turned and listened carefully as Rosalie spoke, though she looked curious. "A thin thread indeed, Miss Elias. In a courtroom it would be called hearsay, and outside of it third hand information at this point. But let us assume hypothetically speaking that Brady is alive, it would contradict the current accounting of things, in which all the expedition members perished in darkest Africa. If Brady was in Hong Kong, I should be surprised. He was fanatically loyal to Roger. Roger saved him from certain conviction of murder, back when Roger was spending a semester at the University of Southern California. That seemed to bind Jack to Roger, and Roger trusted the man absolutely."

Erica tapped her chin thoughtfully, and rested her hand on one of the many easy chairs that could be found in the library. Elsewhere there were tables, reading lamps, ashtrays, and spittoons. There was an elaborate High Victorian iron fireplace on the far wall, a magnificent teak and slate billiards table at the back of the room, and the bookshelves held several hundred volumes. Erica studied the shelves. There were leather bound complete editions of Trollope, Dickens, Bulwer-Lytoon, Mrs. Radcliffe, Francis Parkman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, the earlier works of George Washington Cable, and other fosterers of culture during the previous hundred years. Nearest to them was a shelf that contained mostly old reference works in English and French.

"Towards the last of his time here, Roger constantly read several very, very old books, though I'm not sure which ones they were. There are some occult books on that far shelf, but they seem much newer than the ones Roger was reading. It's possible that he left the books here, but if he did I couldn't easily tell you where they might be found."

"I apologize if it pains you to recall, Miss Carlyle, but would you be willing to recount what you discovered when you searched for your brother's lost expedition? It may help as we try to understand why Jackson was murdered." It still pained Leo to say those words, but he tried not to show any emotion on his face.

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

Bishop had waited for a chance to lay out what he hope was a persuasive case. Now seemed like his chance. If he spoke now he would buy time for Rosalie to look about the library she mentioned as well "Miss Carlyle, my name is Bishop. I am a member of the family, but I am also an operative for the Pinkerton Agency."

While much of what you have heard might be dismissed as academic or hearsay, Jackson Elias' death and his murderers are very real indeed. Jackson was not just killed, he was mutilated in what appears to have been some sort of ritual. His killers appear to have been connected to an African death cult .. likely the same one responsible for whatever happened to your brother. Jack's murder was not their first. They have killed at least six others, likely far more."

"It is unclear why they are here in New York. It is unclear how long they have been here. But the threat is very clear."

"Our goals are two fold. The first is to discover and bring the killers to justice. The second is to complete his work. It seems likely that Jack was killed to stop him from finding the truth and sharing it with the world. Based on what I read of Jack's notes the men brought to justice for your brother's death were nothing but scape goats."

"I don't know if your brother or any of the others survived or suffered some other unknown fate. I do know that Jack's research indicates that their is a chance they did. That Jack and Roger were both victims of the same blood thirsty cult half way across the globe certainly lends credence to Jack's theory. What we hope to accomplish here tonight is to gain your assistance in accomplishing both goals so that we can find justice for Jack and Roger ."
Bishop said concluding his case. He had probably been a bit long winded but would not have another chance to recruit Erica Carlyle to the cause.

"Please, if you can find something of use in the library, spend as much time as you like here," she said to Rosalie, before turning to listen to Bishop's entreaty, a pensive but unreadable expression on her face as she listened.

She was quiet for a moment after he finished speaking, but did not break eye contact with him. When she finally spoke it was in a quiet but serious tone. "You seem sincere in your belief that the death of Jackson is somehow related to my brother's death - or supposedly his disappearance. In truth, I am surprised to know that Jackson was researching the fate of that expedition. He must have been quite circumspect in his inquiries, as I usually am kept well  informed as to matters of that sort."

Bishop nodded with understanding "It would start by sharing what information you have on your brothers and the rest of the expedition. As you just stated you have you stay informed on the matter. You went to Africa and looked and investigated the massacre. You also no doubt have other assets allocated to discovering what occurred."

"Second, while we have our own resource and contacts, you no doubt have your own connections that might open certain doors for us or keep certain matters out of the press and the courts."

"I hope that clarifies matters Miss Carlyle."

"What I keep informed of is any inquiries concerning the family, so that I am aware of them and prepared before they touch the media, and have the opportunity to evaluate the potential harm they may do the family name or the company. I don't actually attempt to stay informed on the Africa situation. As far as I and most other people were concerned, it came to an end a few years ago," she clarified. "As such, I have no assets allocated to discovering what occurred. I attempted to do so on an expedition in years past, but that was the end of that."

"It is possible that I have connections that might be of assistance to you, but as far as keeping things out of the press that is more difficult of a matter - reporters have a tendency to be dogged, and some are not susceptible to influence. I wouldn't count on that. Keeping them out of the courts is far more of a thing to ask. If you are planning some manner of illegal conduct, you may wish to consult an attorney beforehand." She sounded disapproving at the last bit.

"In any case, if there is any inquiry more specific, I can still take a few more minutes. As to any other contacts or connections you may wish to avail of as you look into this, you may speak to Bradley about it," she said.

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

The tomes themselves are thick, and it is apparent that each of them will take a substantial period of time to study. Looking through them, however, a reader might easily be able to get at least a hint of an idea of what each book was about.

Life as a God was bound in white leather over wood. The pages were unnumbered, but seemed to be around perhaps just over a hundred and fifty in rough aproximation. This is a holographic diary account, handwritten by the author - Mongomery Crompton, a British soldier and artist. The text is sloppy and erratic in brown, and sometimes fading, black ink. Amateurishly bound, the book's spine is separating in places.

People of the Monolith was also bound in white leather, but hand crafted with an eye towards quality bordering on opulence. The pages and leather cover are excellently hand-stitched and the paper used is top quality. The pages themselves were printed as individual lithographic plates, that is to say, etched on plates rather than with a regular moveable-type press. Every page has elaborate geometrical designs along the boarder; there is no artwork as such, save for grotesques incorporated into the first letter of each poem. The most striking feature of the book is the unusual medallion on the front cover. It  appears to be a very thin slice of some sort of polished translucent rock placed over a thin sliver backing, creating a weird mirror-like effect in rich gray and white tones. The pattern of crystal formation is highly symmetrical.

The front page bears, in a bold hand, a dedication “To Mister Roger Carlyle. I hope you find these words to be as inspiring as yours were to me at our last meeting. My regards to Anastasia—Tyler.” There is no publisher or date of publication given. It seemed at a glance to simply contain poetry.

The Pnakotic Manuscripts is a manuscripb bound in pale green leather. The cover has no title, only a peculiar pentagram-like symbol, seared into the heavy bindings. The title page gives the work’s name,
followed by a subtitle “As written in the so-called Pnakotik Scrolls, as translatid from the Greke by
the author togeder with addicional remarkes upon that worke in the light of Newe Lerning.”
The book appears to be a translation of a series of Greek documents sharing the title of the work. The print is neat, typeset in archaic English. A printer’s mark says “Trevisa et fils. 1496,” but the binding appears to be much more recent.

Sélections de Livre d'Ivon is a parchment bundle numbering 179 pages. The pages are obviously old, and have suffered from both the elements and the negligence of past owners. The most obvious damage to the work is that the back edge of each sheet is ragged. The work is handwritten and copiously illuminated with grotesque faces, obscene marginalia, and a recurring curious sigil resembling a triskelion.

Walking over to the now opened safe, Annabel glances at each of the books as they are removed. "Is that's all that is in there? How odd, are they valuable do you think? Silly question I know, but why else would they be in there and do you think Miss Carlyle knows about them? They don't really seem to be her style; more her late brother's I would guess."

Leo looked over one of the tomes, Life as God with a bit of disgust. He looked over at Annabel as she spoke and nodded. "Perhaps valuable for the sort of information contained within - and to the right people only. I doubt these are books that your average collector would desire."

The physician pointed at Life as a God. "This particular tome is bound in human skin." Leo heaved a sigh and then looked at the other books. "I suppose there is no other way to determine why these would have been so important to Roger than to dig into them a bit."

After the books had been pulled for study, Rosalie closed the safe, but didn't lock it.  She also swung the bookshelf back into place so that the library looked as it usually did.  "I don't read a lick of French, except perhaps to guess by ferreting out its Latin roots, but I do recognize the subject matter of this book.  This is the Book of Eibon, compiled by a self proclaimed magician.  This really should be in a museum."  She frowned as she thumbed through the pages.  Leo's startling discovery made her glance over and she turned quite pale, physically recoiling.  "Where would Carlyle even obtain such a book?"

Leo furrowed his brow at Stanley's commentary about the books from the safe. "I don't know that this has anything to do with appetites of its owner in this case. But perhaps it has some connection to the African death cult?" Leo briefly looked to the others to gauge their reactions before addressing the matter of what to do with the books.

"Miss Carlyle has given us use of her library for as long as we like. She has offered assistance in helping discover what happened with her brother. She and Mister Grey both seem sincere. And I don't think we should repay that with deception. Miss Carlyle mentioned that there was an attempted break-in of this very library. Perhaps these are the books that were the reason for that attempt."

He again regarded the books they had discovered. "It will take some time to study these books thoroughly, but perhaps we can skim through them and get an idea of the contents."

Re: Chapter 1.5: To a God Unknown

OOC:

Just an FYI with respect to the books

Because of the density, complexity, and age of the books, some of them will take you quite a long time to skim (let alone read). The shortest books will run you between 2-4 hours each to skim. The longer books (written in Middle English, and French) may take days to skim, and weeks of study to actually read.

Based on that, if you want to spend up to four hours here, you may be able to skim both Life as a God and People of the Monolith here in the library. The other two will take over a day each to even skim.

Considering how late it was and all they have already been though today, the last thing Annabel wanted to do was sit for hours pouring though some old books. Some of them looked awfully big. Better to do it after a good nights sleep and were able to take their time. If she had to look at any of them, it wasn't going to be that horrid one with the skin.

Looking around the library, Leo finds nothing that he might not find in another library, and though large for a private collection, small in comparison to the university libraries to which he is accustomed. There are sections on history, philosophy, science, and literature. He does find books about the occult, but they are very different from the books in the safe, and mainly are academic discussions of the subject and entirely reputable, at least insofar as occult works are concerned. The books focus on all sorts of subjects ranging from voodoo and Christian mysticism, to Tantra, Theosophy, and other various esoteric texts. Nothing seems to stand out.

Leo poked around for a bit, but didn't see anything worthwhile here besides what they had retrieved from the safe. "Well, it doesn't look like there is anything here we can't find at a university library, though the collection is quite substantial and impressive for a private citizen. It also is more heavily concentrated on the, er, mystical than one would normally expect, but I doubt that surprises any of us."

He gestured back toward the exit. "Shall we make our exit, ask to borrow the four books we found, and research them at our leisure? I think we should close and hide the safe again, keep these books well hidden and mention them only to Mister Grey on the way out." He looked around for confirmation or activity from the others.
