Chapter 2.3: Mirrors, Spice and Everything Nice [01/30/1925]

She looked at Millicent with sympathy and placed a calming hand on her arm.  "You are correct in some regard.  We don't know what it will do, if it will, indeed, do anything at all.  But I think there is some distinction of difference in that Vincent would be a willing participant in the experiment, rather than have something forced upon him."

"Regardless, I would prefer more mundane methods, myself.  Only because I'm not entirely sure such a thing would work.  We have all seen a great many things that could not be explained away, but I am not quite yet ready to believe in magic and monsters."
One eyebrow quirked.  "Men as monsters, perhaps."

She turned her attention to the others, looking at each in turn.  "I don't like the idea of us being apart again, but I thin it is warranted in this case.  One group to search Penhew and another to search for the mirror, or the men that took it.  I have little preference on which way I go, for either could be just as dangerous, but I'm resolved to do one or the other tonight.  Best if we decide now who will be going where now so we can cement our plans."

Tommy nodded.
Men as monsters. There were plenty of those about.
"I think Rosa, that if the mirror is within our grasp, it is in the Penhew Foundation.

"But it sounds like we are generally agreed on the need for two groups. I'd say one set for the pyramid truck, the other set for the Penhew foundation.".
He looked to Avery. "In my mind neither group should proceed without the other being aware. We dont know for sure the truck will turn up tonight and we need it's distraction for the Penhew foundation to be empty.
So until the truck arrives...which may not be tonight...we should simply study both places. When it does arrive, Avery, will you be our puppet master? Whoever is watching the Pyramid can call you to let you know the game is afoot.".

"The question then becomes who should do what. Vincent and I at least have a little skill in exploring locked places, but if things turn rough I'm not sure how much help I'll be.". Compared to Bo and Bishop the reporter little doubted he was outclassed. "Once inside I can rifle through papers like the best of 'em, but the foundation is a museum or a library right? We need someone who knows a thing or two about history...who can make sense of whatever might stick out.".

"It's your shout Leo. Where do you want us?".

Moretti, keeping his voice low so he wouldn't interrupt the other discussions taking place, said to Cotton. "Looks like you and I are playing at being thieves again, paisan. Us and maybe one other person, from the sound of it."

"That being the case, we need to hire a car and leave as soon as we're able. It may sound like I'm talking about something out of the pulps, but we should find a clothing store. Buy some hats and some scarves or bandannas. Things we can use to conceal our features, in case we're seen."

"We also need to get a look at the Foundation in daylight. Figure out what the best way in might be. Make a plan."
He sighed. "We probably also need to get some food...and coffee. It's going to be a long night."

"I would be more than happy to serve a coordinating role in your enterprise, Mr. Cotton, unless Dr. Elias has something else in mind for me," he said.

"Furthermore, I would be remiss in my duties if I didn't mention two details of note, which may have been overlooked but that I have recorded as you conversed and in my other inquiries made on your behalfs. While you have spoken of these two activities occurring simultaneously, and a resulting need to split your number, I don't believe that is strictly necessary. According to your conversations with the young woman, the pickup at the Blue Pyramid doesn't occur until very late at night, while the Penhew Foundation officially closes at 5:30 in the evening, well after sunset," he said.

"This gives you a window of a few hours to conduct any activities desired at the Penhew Foundation, and while certainly the number attempting an improper entry to the Foundation should be small, this doesn't preclude you rejoining the others in their surveillance at the Pyramid later on," the valet observed.

Tommy chuckled quietly as Vincent leant over to confide his plan.
"Hats and scarves eh? I reckon we'd need them anyway-its cold enough out there already without Zubaida to warm them bones. Checking out the place before we enter is a good shout too. I'm happy to follow your lead.". He looked up. "Hey, could one of you folks who've been inside the foundation scribble out a map of the joint?".

He listened carefully as the ever astute Avery leant his wisdom.
"That's an interesting idea Aves. It would lend more weight to following the truck...".
He mused on the suggestion.
"The idea behind doing them both was that there might be goons from the foundation who go with the truck though, emptying the place out. If we hit the Foundation before midnight, don't we risk there being more bodies in the place to hide from?".

"In happy to do whatever the experts think best. Not sure this is my area of expertise.".

"Yeah, Vince, hats and scarves for certain," Bo nods, grinning.

"I'm always of the opinion that the quickest way into anyplace is the door. We need to case Penhew tonight and into tomorrow to get a line on how many guards there are and how many workers might stay late. This isn't anyone's home though, so other than the front door guard and maybe a watchman inside, it should be mostly empty.

"So I say we rush the guard, or maybe lure him outside, cosh him and walk in. Someone takes his place to keep anyone from getting suspicious, and we should have the run of the place all night, if we want.

"What do you suppose would happen if Rosalie -- whose meat and potatoes is museums -- should run up to the gate asking for help, then stalls him with the gate open until Stan and I run up to mug him down? I'm betting we'd be copacetic.

"But we better get over there and have a look at the place. Avery can you rustle up some sandwiches and a thermos of hot coffee?"

Leo listened to the discussion, but was deep in thought as new information and ideas surfaced. He shook his head at Avery's question. "No, being here to co-ordinate is exactly what I had in mind for you, Avery."

He listened as the plans were being drawn up, and nodded as Tommy and Vincent seemed to be making some headway on how they were going to potentially remain unseen. At the request for a map, Leo sketched one out as best as he could remember. "This is what I remember from the inside of the foundation." He looked over to Rosalie to see if she had anything to add.

She leaned over the table to peer at what Leo had drawn and then nodded her agreement.  "That's about right."  Looking to the others, she straightened with one hand resting on her hip.  "It sounds like a good plan, Bo, to get a little more information on the comings and goings, but I honestly believe that we don't have that much time.  We need to act, and we need to act now."

"Vincent, if you and Thomas are set on slipping into Penhew, I'm willing to go with you.  I know some of the layout, at least, and could likely come up with a reasonable explanation if we're seen."

Moretti regarded Rosalie for a moment, then his gaze went to the floor, a frown of concentration on his face. After a pause, he glanced at Cotton and nodded. Addressing the others, he said, "I think we should try it. With Rosalie's expertise, we'd have the best chance of locating anything important that ties to the Brotherhood or the Carlyle Expedition."

"And I think she's correct. Much as I prefer preparing and being cautious, I agree that time is of the essence. If we were to locate something that could clearly implicate the Brotherhood to the police, we might prevent more innocents from becoming victims."

He was quiet for a moment, then added, "I know watching the Pyramid is a gamble. That truck might show tonight. Or it might not. But if it does, I think it would be best if someone was there to tail them. Even if it's just to figure out their location so we can tip Scotland Yard off to it later."

Leo nodded at Rosie's offer. "I think that makes sense for the team going to the Foundation. If things are impossible to crack, Rosie also will be able to help you with the scroll. I think that should be a last resort, but it's still a tool that we may need to use."

He looked at the others. "That leaves four of us for other tasks. One question is whether we need two additional people near the foundation to watch the outside. Or if the remainder of us should split two and two to go to the docks and the Blue Pyramid. I'm in favor of splitting three ways, but if others have opposing opinions, let's hear them now. It might help to head by all these places now to get a feel for them, with plans to return later."

"Going to the docks sounds risky. Breaking in to the museum and tailing the truck I think are dangerous enough for one night let alone a third adventure...

Besides, if things go wrong in our other capers we'll be glad of the extra hands.".

Tommy nodded to Bishop and 'Bo.
"From the stories you've told it sounds like you guys are our best bet behind the wheel. That means at least one of you needs to be on the truck team...which means whoever we stuck on dock duty won't even have looked at the place.

I say all four of the rest of you trail the truck. Two cars incase you lose 'em or to deal with multiple trucks or drop-offs or something.".

He stretched and stood up glancing to Vincent and Rosalie.
"Whatever they decide, we aught to get moving and get some eyes on that place. Maybe Mr Avery could source suitably obscuring winter-wear for us too?".

Millicant finally spoke up. "That's the thing isn't it. Since we don't know when things are really going to happen, if we put 4 on tailing the truck, we could just be wasting our time tonight. I kind of agree with the good Doctor; take 2 of us to watch the docks for anything, just in case you know. I wouldn't mind going over there with Dr. Elias to keep him company if he wants to check it out." She gave a little smile, "we could even continue our conversation from earlier to pass the time."

"But," she continued, "I'll help wherever I'm needed if you think it's not worth the effort for now."

Moretti frowned in thought. "Well...although we can't say for certain if the mirror is still at the Penhew Foundation, it's clear that something was being shipped out overseas from there. It could be an item of no import, or it could be something valuable sent to assist another group like the Brotherhood. If the Foundation is tied to the Brotherhood as deeply as we suspect, finding out what they're sending and to whom could prove to be valuable information."

"So, on reflection, I'm inclined to agree with Leo. The docks are probably worth investigating, so long as whoever goes is careful...just like the rest of us."

  Millicent had looked a little disappointed that Stanley wanted to go to the Pyramid instead, messing up the pairing of her and the good Doctor, but brightened when he said he would be able to talk with her later. She pondered on his words for a minute and finally said;

"Well either is fine with me, but if I had a choice, I think waiting in a car would be more pleasant than sitting on the docks on a cold night waiting for something to happen. But then again, it wouldn't be the first time I was at a dock at night for one reason or another."

Bishop had not said much since he and Bo had arrived from the pub. Listening to the others, he had held back.

"I don't think we can split our forces enough to cover all three spots. Avery is right about the timing of the truck. I think we should concentrate on Penhew and that warehouse at the docks.  The more important, and complicated of the two is almost certainly Penhew. We know the mirror want, there, we know Elias was connected to the place."

"So I suggest that Millicent stcik with you either at the docks or at Penhew."

"No Bo mentioned that I am better armed. That is almost certainly true. But it doesn't have to be. To that end I also suggest that we purchase some firearms. Shotguns and perhaps rifles. We can leave them in our automobiles, but if we run into something like we saw at the JuJu House, we will want to be armed."
Bishop added.

"A telegram for you, Miss O'Connor," he said, handing it to her. "It appears to be from Mr. Bradley Grey."

"Thank you Avery," Millicent said as she took the note and read it. "I'll send him something before we leave tonight." She turned to the others, her look thoughtful; "it seems our dear Mr. Grey wants an update on our progress. I hope our endeavors tonight bear some fruit to make him happy."

"You know, Mr. Bishop has a point. I don't see why the truck can't wait until later in the night, which would give dear Tommy, Rosalie, and Vincent the pleasure of Stanley's and my company. With a little luck, we'll get done in time to see if this pickup happens or not."

"And," she finished giving a small resigned sigh. "If you really want to go there with so many weapons, please be careful. I may be a nurse, but I really don't want to see the insides of any of you; plus it's awfully messy."

Moretti clears his throat. "My only concern about that idea is this, Miss O'Connor. If we're approaching this as a break in, many times it's best to wait until late, as in after midnight, before trying to enter. The deep of night, midnight to three in the morning, is going to be the period when guards are usually contending with boredom and drowsiness. Their alertness will be at a low ebb. If we want to get in and out without being detected, and with a minimum of violence, that's the best time to make the attempt."

Re: Chapter 2.3: Mirrors, Spice and Everything Nice [01/30/1925]

Leo listened to the thoughts of the others, nodding as each had their say in turn. He considered for a moment with lips pressed together, then responded. "We do have three places we'd like to go, but Stanley does have a point. There is safety in numbers. However, I don't think we need any additional crew at the Penhew Foundation. Rather I think we should keep the three that were planning to go there the same. The remaining four of us will go first to the docks in the evening, then to the Pyramid by 11 o'clock. That will provide us a larger group to go in those two directions, and the only errand that is truly time sensitive is watching the Pyramid."

The physician grew quiet for a moment as he considered the other information. "As for further armament, obtaining additional weapons seems unlikely to a simple, safe task. And purchasing and carrying them puts us at risk of running afoul of the authorities. Though I've never tried to purchase such an item here, so my opinion is based on what I understand from speaking with others. If I am incorrect in this assumption, then it may make sense to gather more firearms. However, we do lack time for any drawn out methods of getting our hands on such equipment." Leo looked around to see if anyone else had thoughts on how simple it would be to get more weapons and keep them hidden from the cops.

Re: Chapter 2.3: Mirrors, Spice and Everything Nice [01/30/1925]

Bishop would have preferred to stay close to Rosie. If the Penhew Foundation proved half as dangerous as JuJu House it could be a death trap.

"I agree that getting into and out of the Penhew Foundation undetected is key. But that is probably the case with the warehouse as well. The longer we can remain an unknown to this enemy the better. But if we are detected we will need to be ready to fight."

Bishop continued "By my count the only weapons we have our my pistol and shotgun. I am suggesting we purchase some shotguns and perhaps rifles. We are planning a trip to Africa in the near future, are we not? No reason we would not outfit ourselves for such a trip. We make a show of that during their purchase. We can leave them in the trunks of our automobiles." Bishop said.

"They may be all that keeps us alive against a truck load of murderous Arabs." Bishop finished.

Then as if remembering something "Miss O'Connor, the trick is keeping you feet warm."
