"I can take the pistol," Rosalie said quietly. She rose from her chair. "Excuse me for a moment. I need to... I need to see him alone before we go." She shuddered to think of Stanley's corpse being muscled to the car and flopping about as they drove, but she knew it was necessary. They couldn't, she wouldn't, leave him behind.
After taking the key from Avery, she moved across the hall and let herself into Bishop's room, closing the door behind her. From a distance, he appeared to be simply sleeping on the bed. Closer, she could tell that he was still, too still. Still in shock, she couldn't really believe what she was seeing. Sitting on the bed beside him, she touched his hand and found it cold. She caught a sob in her hand as the tears streamed anew.
"Stanley," she whispered. "My darling... what did they do to you?"
