Chapter 2.5: Safe [02/01/1925]
Making contact and repeating the instructed phrase, Tommy received the information about the safe house that Vincent had arranged for them. They were able to park the car nearby, so as to better ease Stanley in, and the cabs dropped the others off not far away.
The place was a few stairs below street level, tucked into underside of an Italian butcher shop in Clerkenwell that was of course closed at this hour. It appeared to be boarded up, but a key had been left for them at a particular place that was noted in the conversation, and they were able to access the interior with ease.
The area was spare. The space was almost all one room, save for the attached latrine, which was rudimentary in nature. In the room there was little in the way of furniture - a table with a couple of chairs around it and about four cots. A cabinet contained some basic medical supplies, as well as canned and dried foodstuffs. A small crew could hole up in here for a short time, laying low till things were safe again. What appeared to be a trap door leading to the shop above was barred from above.
