Chapter 3.1: Into the Pilbara
The man studied his hand for a moment as if considering not taking the gesture, but quickly gave Phillip a perfunctory shake. "My shop is adequately provisioned to supply that sort of thing. As for advice, I'm not much of a miner myself," he said. He looked out through the main window.

"I can't see a vehicle outside, so I can tell you this much: if you're hoping to do this business on foot and carry what you need, you probably won't get very far."

Chapter 3.1: Into the Pilbara
Phillip nods in agreement, " Yes sir, going out into the Pilbara with just Monty and myself on foot would be a very short trip.  Most of our other mates are watering up before the journey.  Let me look around a bit and see if there is anything we had not thought of to carry along.  You wouldn't have any maps of the area you may have made would you?"

16:00, Today: Phillip Marsh rolled 65 using 1d100 with rolls of 65.  Persuade (15%):  70 - Does Wycroft have any maps?

"Maps..." the surly shopkeeper said. "I'm not a map maker. Haven't made any maps of my own, know. I know the land. I've learned it. But I do have a few maps. I've got a few copies of an old survey map of the Canning Stock Route. I'll sell you one for a fiver," he said.

Wycroft took the money, and parted with the map, seemingly more annoyed by the interruption than pleased with the transaction, even though it had been in his favor.

There is a single telephone behind the counter, where a chemist is helping dispense some goods to a customer and finishing a transaction.

Marsh gets a funny look at the question.

"Don't really have a directory, mate. Cuncudgerie isn't that big. You lookin' for somebody in particular?"

In reply to The Keeper (msg # 67):

Phillip says, "Yes, I'd like to get the phone number of a Mr. John Carver.  He's an American gentleman who has conducted surveys and exploratory diggings along the Canning stock route.  I need to get in touch with him.  Would you know him?"

Chapter 3.1: Into the Pilbara
"Don't get many folks from that far away, so when it does, word does get around. I'd heard there was an American in town, and I'm guessin' that's you. But yes, there was an American gentleman out here conducting surveys down that way, but that was a few years ago. I suppose his name mighta been John Carver. It sounds about right, but we didn't interact really. Might ask some of the blokes that deal in outfitting. But that man doesn't live in town, and hasn't been here for some time."

"Hiya," he greets the proprietor, "I'm new to these parts, headed into the outback. Wondered what the recent news might be around here."

"I'm afraid I didn't know Carver all that well, really. Would you like to purchase something?" The shelves were lined with common medications of the day, as well as candies and other sundries.

In reply to Simon Snowden (msg # 60):

"Well, then, you'll prolly wanna buy a copy of our publication," he said. "Just one pound, sir," he said, holding out a copy of the Cuncudgerie Gazette as he waited expectantly for payment. It was a single pager, front and back, with various items of news, sales, birth notices, obituaries, and the like.

Chapter 3.1: Into the Pilbara
"I don't think there's a standard medical load out specifically for the Pilbara. There isn't a rash of region specific diseases there that would require their own medication. It wouldn't hurt you to purchase a first aid it, I suppose. Maybe somethin' for headaches. As long as you're outfitted right, you should be well covered," he said.

Chapter 3.1: Into the Pilbara
"You lookin' to buy property?" the man asked, curiously. Phillip's questions had gone seemingly all over the map. "Town isn't big enough for a real estate agent. There's a land survey office if you're interested in a spot in town, and an assay office if you're hopin' to stake a mining claim. But if you'll excuse me sir, I have customers."

While Phillip was asking his array of seemingly unrelated questions, there was a queue of customers forming behind him that were actually looking to do some business with the pharmacist.

Chapter 3.1: Into the Pilbara
After a bit of asking around, Phillip eventually finds the land survey office.

Like many of the establishments here in Cuncudgerie, it seems to be a dingy and ramshackle affair of a building, though once within Phillip finds that it is impeccably organized. There's a desk with several shelves behind it and chests with drawers. In the shelves, there are arrays of folders and binders that seem packed with papers, though very neatly so. An old man with a pair of narrow spectacles, a round bald head, and a thin beard seems at present to be ordering some files in one of the drawers. He looks up at Phillip's entrance:

"G'day mate!" he says in a reed-thin, if cheery voice.

Phillip responds, "G'day to you mate!  I'm Phillip Marsh and I'd like to know a bit more about this area.  I heard tell that a man called John Carver did some surveys and some digging along the Canning stock route.  Do you have any of those survey maps or any surveys of the eastern side of the Great Sandy Desert?  I wonder what happened to Carver?"

Chapter 3.1: Into the Pilbara
"That's a bit far outta my patch there," he said. The man opened a ledger and looked at it, shook his head, then got up and worked his way over to a very far shelf. "I can see if I have something about that area that's layin' around, but this office is set up mostly to handle the town and the surrounding areas. I can say that I don't have anything for you in town for that particular individual, though."

Phillip hangs his head down and admonishes, "Hell, just one let down after another today.  Not you're fault mate, just my poor luck or not knowing who to talk too.  Thanks for your time at looking though.  G'day."
Phillip drags himself out of the office and heads back to the pub, looking dejected and friendless.
