OOC:  Alright, you've been in individual combats for long enough so that most elements of hiding and spotting have played themselves out.  New thread here.

A wave of the grasses...a rustle of long stems being brushed aside...and a group of hyena-headed creatures is rushing forward.

New round.

Asher breaks from hiding, moving quickly to aid Perrato.  The monk is unable to close to within combat distance, but pauses just outside of weapon's reach.

Re: Reunited...and it feels, well, OK, I guess...

Gauging the party's distrees, Aidrin thrusts his hand into one of his many pouches and snatches out a clump of dust that drifts like red and yellow rust out of his fist. Wheeling on his feet, the wizard thrusts his arm towards the west and shouts theurgically into the air.

Once the spell for Flaming Sphere is complete, Aidrin sends the blazing globe sailing through the air towards the nearest gnoll and then he backs behind Villhalas.

Re: Reunited...and it feels, well, OK, I guess...

(13)
Villhalas spins on his heel and lunges toward one of the gnolls facing down Perrato.  Unfortunately, the fibrous roots and tough rhizomes of the grass impede the sorcerer, and his rapier thrust is mistimed.

(10)
Aidrin's words echo in the warm, still air of the evening.  A blazing ball of fire appears in the air and leaps into the path of an oncoming gnoll.  The creature attempts to dodge the burning globe, but is unable to do so.

(10)
The gnoll facing Totmacher snarls and yips, foam flying from the lips drawn back from its teeth.  The creature's battleaxe descends, the force of the gnoll's weight behind it--and catches the barbarian with the full force of its edge.

(8)
The gnolls facing Perrato and his beetles act.  One gnoll spins towards Villhalas, its axe shearing through the air.  The head of the axe tears through the sorcerer's throat, parting his head from his body.  Vilhallas collapses, dead.

The other gnoll attacks the beetle that had wounded it, tearing into the Coleopteran with its battleaxe.  The axe head splits the beetle's carapace, and the summoned beetle disappears in a small, misty cloud.

OOC:  Damn.  Here are the rolls, and Tot is up on segment 6.
16:28, Today: DM rolled 8 using 1d8+3. Gnoll damage vs. beetle.
16:28, Today: DM rolled 19 using 1d20+4. Gnoll attack vs. beetle.

Re: Reunited...and it feels, well, OK, I guess...

(6)
Totmacher's gauntleted fist blow is badly mistimed, and the barbarian finds himself struggling to compensate for the haymaking punch he had just thrown.  The half-orc's feet are tied up in the tough stems of the tall prairie grass, and Totmacher attempts to regain his balance and fighting stance.

(4)
The gnoll reinforcements continue their baying, yipping approach to the party.  One gnoll charges straight for Totmacher, slashing the barbarian a glancing blow with its battleaxe.  Another charges for Aidrin, but is unable to connect with its axe swing, as the wizard adroitly ducks under the gnoll's weapon.  Two others move towards Asher, but are unable to cover enough distance to employ their weapons.  Another likewise bounds towards Perrato, but cannot quite close with the Palonish priest.  The last gnoll sends a feathered shaft from its short bow towards the Narvilian monk, but the missile is poorly aimed and misses the man by more than two yards.

OOC:  Perrato and his amazing performing beetle are up in segment 3.  Gnolls in segment 4 took hustle moves (double), with the exception of two who took straight-line charges (v. Tot and v. Aidin, respectively).  One hung back and fired an arrow.  Rolls follow:
22:57, Today: DM rolled 8 using 1d20+3. Gnoll bow attack vs. Asher.
22:44, Today: DM rolled 12 using 1d20+4. Gnoll attack vs. Aidin.
22:39, Today: DM rolled 5 using 1d8+3. Gnoll damage to Tot.
22:38, Today: DM rolled 19 using 1d20+6. Gnoll charge attack vs. Tot.
Tot is currently at a raging hp score of 10 hp (2 after the rage kicks off).  New map is up on the site HERE.  Note that the older map is still linked above, so you can see positions from the previous action (i.e. before the gnolls went on segment 4).

After taking another five-foot step to the east [to H16], Perrato turns to the gnoll to his southwest [I, 14] and recites a prayer for Compulsory Submission to Divine Will (Command) to be directed at said attacker, "Decide terra per auctoritam Vagrani!" in hopes that he will fall prone at his current location.

Perrato takes a quick step away from the immediate vicinity of the snarling gnolls, and chants a prayer to Vagrani.  One of the gnolls collapses instantly, as if poleaxed.  Perrato's beetle lunges at the gnoll facing it, and its mandibles close on the thing's leg

New round.

(15)
Asher engages the gnolls in front of him in combat.  Unfortunately for the monk, both of his punches are wide of their mark--the second one so much so that Asher must catch himself to recover his balance.

(10)
Aidrin is up.

OOC:  10:39, Today: DM rolled 4 using 2d4. Beetle damage.
10:18, Today: DM rolled 7 using 1d20. Gnoll save vs. Command, DC 14.
10:16, Today: DM rolled 14 using 1d20. Beetle attack.  Note that the beetle has a +1 to hit, which I neglected to include in the dice roller, but included in the final tally (i.e. it hit with a 15 rather than a 14).

Re: Is it nap time already?

Deciding that one sleeping half-orc is worth four sleeping gnolls, Aidrin backs 5 feet away from the gnoll facing him [to E,14], raises his hands ominously and casts Arcane Slumber (Sleep, DC14) [at C/D,10.5]. The wizard then makes a yanking motion with his arm and sends the flaming sphere sailing back towards the gnoll in front of him [should be able to make it to just short of F,9].

Re: Is it nap time already?

Aidrin moves away from the axe-wielding gnoll threatening him, and casts a spell towards the gnolls threatening Totmacher.  Fine-grained sand drifts through the wizard's hands as he gestures and mutters the liquid syllables of the spell.  One of the gnolls collapses heavily onto the ground, but the other two shake their heads vigorously, as if annoyed by small, biting insects.  Likewise, Totmacher manages to shake off the effects of the spellin which he was inadvertently caught.

Aidrin also manages to control the burning ball of fire, causing it to leap through the tall grasses--leaving a trail of burning grass in its wake--and collide with a gnoll who had remained behind to pick off stragglers with its bow.  The gnoll tries to elude the flaming sphere, but sustains some burns and singed fur nevertheless.

OOC:  13:33, Today: DM rolled 5 using 2d6. flaming sphere damage.
13:32, Today: DM rolled 12 using 1d20+2. reflex save vs. flaming sphere, dc 15.
13:26, Today: DM rolled 20 using 1d20. Gnoll will save, vs. sleep, DC 14.
13:26, Today: DM rolled 15 using 1d20. Gnoll will save, vs. sleep, DC 14.
13:25, Today: DM rolled 14 using 1d20. Gnoll will save, vs. sleep, DC 14. Gnolls are at a -1 for Enchantment spells (not included in the Dice Roller), so one of the three succumbed to Aidrin's spell (the one who was up on segment 10).

(8)
The gnoll squared off against Perrato's summoned beetle swings its axe downward in a viscious blow, but the beetle scuttles aside easily, avoiding the blow entirely.  The other gnoll is unable to act, unconscious and prone this round.

New map depicting positions HERE.  Totmacher is up on segment 6, followed by the rest of the gnolls on segment 4, then Perrato and his beetle (next-to-last round for the beetle) on 3.

Totmacher, reeling from his wounds and the misstep of his previous attack--but still riding his barbarian rage--elects to commit himself to a total defense.

(4)
The gnolls act.

One of the gnolls near Perrato moves, avoiding the summoned beetle, and closes with the Palonish priest.  A heavy axe blow, aimed at Perrato's head, is adroitly deflected by the priest as he employs his shield.

Another gnoll, burnt by Aidrin's flaming sphere, leaps away from the burning globe.  Moving swifly through the tall grass, the gnoll puts some distance between itself and the summoned incendiary, and then attempts to shoot an arrow at Aidrin...disastrously.  The gnoll's short bow twists in its hands, as the over-eager creature fumbles to fit arrow to string, and manages to stab itself with its own arrow and drop the bow.

The gnolls facing Asher split up, and move to opposite sides of the monk.  The first gnoll's axe blow is so poorly aimed that the creature almost keels over, but recovers its balance.  The second gnoll fares little better, the blade of its weapon missing by a wide margin.

OOC:  12:16, Today: DM rolled 7 using 1d20+4. Gnoll attack vs. Asher, second.
12:13, Today: DM rolled 21 using 1d20+2. Critical miss check, DC 10.

11:56, Today: DM rolled 7 using 1d20+4. Gnoll attack vs. Tot, AC 19.
Note that Asher's AC drops from 17 to 15, due to the gnoll's flanking.  Perrato and his beetle are up next.  Tot is at 5 hp, rage-enhanced.  He will drop to -3 upon termination of the rage.  The gnoll attacking Perrato moved from H13 to I14 to H15, to avoid the AOO from the beetle.  Updated map is shown HERE.

Moses only had to see a burning bush...

As he and his remaining beetle are beset by two particularly unfriendly gnolls, Perrato ruefully wishes that he'd spent less time with Mithran scripture and beatific nature walks and more time observing the combat techniques of Paldorian soldiers. Nonetheless, his limited practice in the martial craft enables him to bring his morningstar to its mark. "Hay solamente tanto perdón que te puedo ofrecer, Señor Perro," he mutters as he draws his weapon back to a ready position.

OOC:  New round.  Asher is up, followed by Aidrin, then the two original gnolls on Perrato (one of whom will have to get up from the ground where Perrato had Commanded it to lie).  Following that is Tot, then the rest of the gnolls, and then we're back to Perrato and his insect buddy.

The two gnolls facing Totmacher lunge towards the barbarian simultaneously, their battle axes weaving deadly arcs of steel through the dusky summer air.  The arabesque of death that these weapons describe is very real...very imminent...very final.  Both weapons catch the barbarian hard--one shears through his ribcage, the other splits the half-orc's skull.  Totmacher collapses to the ground, dead instantly.

One of the other gnolls facing Perrato swings its axe, and the priest deflects the blow with a canny placement of his shield.

The gnolls dogging Asher continue to do so.  One tries to catch the monk with a sidewise axe blow, but the human agiley avoids the weapon--leaping back quickly.  The other gnoll circles around, and is able to land an axe blow on Asher's shoulder, catching the monk as he is focused on the enemy in front of him.

Grim scene, baby. Grim scene...

[OOC: This is getting to be like the end of Excalibur. I'm looking for a lake to duck into, myself.]

Perrato sees the barbarian fall out of the corner of his eye and a tear for his fallen comrade wells up even as he parries an attack with his shield. "No le debería pasar a un perro. A exepción de estos perros, quizás," says the cleric under his breath as he takes a step to the south and engages the gnoll directly to his east [H,15] with his morningstar.

[OOC:
22:02, Today: Perrato Viatomagne rolled 25 using 1d20+5. Attack gnoll (h 15), morningstar.

23:54, Today: Perrato Viatomagne rolled 6 using 1d8+1. Critical hit damage, morningstar.
]

With a gesture of his weapon the Palonard directs his remaining beetle in his last moments among the group to attack the same gnoll as he did.

[ OOC: 22:13, Today: Perrato Viatomagne rolled 6 using 1d20. Beetle attack, gnoll (H 15).]

With a heave of his morningstar, Perrato slams the head of his weapon into the side of a gnoll's muzzle--hard.  With a cracking of bone, the gnoll's eyes roll up inside its head and the creature drops heavily to the ground, unmoving.

New round.

(23)
From seemingly nowhere, an arrow arcs into the general melee--sailing in from the north.  The arrow pierces the back of one of the gnolls near Asher, and the creature goes down.  Asher recognizes the fletching of the arrow--one of Caylin's.

In his mind he envisions stunning one of the beasts and doing damage, but alas, it is a dream.

Sheepishly he steps away from the two Gnolls he tried to punch in the head, as if to say "just kiddin'"

One of the gnolls facing Perrato swings its axe, and the blade catches the priest low, scoring a long cut on the Palonish man's thigh.

(4)
The gnoll facing the beetle swings its axe, but once again the insect scuttles away.  The celestial fire beetle's time is almost at an end, however, and it will fade away in mere seconds.

The gnoll with the bow, having recovered from its critical miss, moves to the north and sends an arrow arcing into the grasslands.

The two gnolls, having killed the half-orc barbarian, yap at one another with angry-sounding barkings.  Both then stoop to wake the gnoll felled by Aidrin's Sleep spell, and all three begin to move north, crouched over and pulling their short bows out as they do so.

The two gnolls assaulting Asher again arrange themselves in flanking position.  Both whirl their battle axes through the air, in an attempt to cut down the Narvilian man, but the monk proves too agile for the creatures--eluding both blows.

Perrato is up, as his summoned beetle fades away.

Perrato takes a step directly to his south [H,16], and quaffs a potion of Well-Being and Salubrious Mending that he drew from his pouch earlier after successfully landing a finishing blow on the gnoll [per PM]. Then he heads due east at his quickest step, and turns to face his attackers whom he presumes will pursue him.

And so it goes...

(15)
Asher strikes twice with his fists--hard, piston-like punches.  The gnoll who had been struck a glancing blow by Caylin's arrow bears the brunt of the monk's attacks, and collapses as the first blow shatters its rostrum, and the second crushes its windpipe.

(8)
The gnoll that has been attacking Perrato continues to do so, pursuing the priest and launching itself at him.  The axe blow is severely misplaced, however, and the creature must shift its balance dramatically to recover.

(4)
The three gnolls who disappeared northward into the tall grass are out of sight.

The other gnoll who had been assailing Perrato also continues to do so.  The heavy battle axe, swung forcefully by the creature, is able to penetrate the priest's armor, drawing blood from a wound on Perrato's shield arm.

The remaining gnoll facing Asher snarls and heaves its battle axe at the monk.  A hard, fast blow, the attack catches the monk along his ribcage.  Asher is able to twist away, however--and avoid being cut in two.

Call me "Biff"...

Surprised by the charge of the gnoll who was previously believed to be out of range, Perrato opts to recite the prayer for the Ward of Divine Grace Against Hostilities [Sanctuary] as he maintains his best defense to discourage attack during his declamation [Casting on the Defensive]. This requires no small amount of concentration, and he musters his focus as he says,  "O Vagrani, contra hostia mea me def--!" His prayer is cut short as his left foot unexpectedly lands hard on the uneven earth behind him, aggravating his wounds. The divine favor culled to execute the prayer is lost.

Re: Call me "Biff"...

Desperate to help the parties last remaining hope, Asher makes a hurried move to back up Perrato. Rushing as he is, Asher lunges into an awkward forward roll to avoid being hit by the Gnoll he is leaving behind. His acrobatic skills fail him completely and he barely regains his feet. His clumsy roll does provoke the Gnoll, but fortunately, the Gnoll was not prepared for Ashers exit, and his axe plants in the dirt just behind rolling Monk.

Once up, he lurches across the field of battle carefull to approach the Gnoll, threatening the cleric from the south, from the diagonal to avoid an unwanted blow. When within reach, Asher lashes out wildly with an attempt at stunning the Gnoll, and misses horribly.

"Breathe" a voice whispers in his head, "breathe".

Perched on Garryn's shoulders, Caylin notes the approach of the gnolls, and views the far-off combat involving Asher and Perrato with worry.  A snarl crosses the halfling's face, and he fires one more arrow towards the distant conflict before leaping to the ground.  Caylin does not wait to see if his shot is even close.

Meanwhile, an arrow arcs in from the north.  The gnoll facing Perrato, slightly wounded, goes down in a tangle of limbs as the downward-tending arrow shears through the creature's brainstem and exits through its trachea.  The gnoll is, emphatically, dead.

Garryn, rapier in hand, prepares himself to face the oncoming gnolls.

(15)
Asher, drawing the ancient agricultural-tool-turned-weapon called a kama, manages to hook the knee of one of the gnolls.  After a brief struggle, the monk upends the creature, sending it heavily to the ground.

(4)
The downed gnoll struggles to regains its feet, while its fellow attempts to fell Asher with its battleaxe.  The gnoll manages to strike the monk, its weapon slipping past the monk's catlike defenses.

Two of the gnolls facing Garryn and Caylin charge the rogue and the halfling, while the third circles around, yapping excitedly and trying to achieve a flanking position.  The fourth is nowhere to be seen.  Garryn, every fiber of his being focused on defending himself, easily evades the gnoll's charge.  Caylin's size and quickness serves the halfling warrior well, and he just manages to avoid the murderous onslaught of the ravening gnoll.

Perrato sees the wounded and unconscious Aidrin out of the corner of his eye, and, unaware of the wizard's current physical state, the cleric covers the distance between the two and prepares to assist his fallen comrade.

[OOC: Taking a double move action this round, Perrato positions himself in E 15. Next round he intends to revive Aidrin.]

Perrato, finding himself no longer imminently threatened, moves quickly aid the fallen wizard Aidrin.  The Palonish priest, upon reaching the unconscious Phanarian, finds him to be gravely wounded, but stable.

New round.

(23)
Caylin scrambles backwards again, plying his bow with ferocity.  Two arrows thud home up to their fletchings, both piercing the gnoll's chest, and killing the creature instantly.  Suddenly, Garryn is no longer faced with a foe.

(22)
Garryn seeks to engage the remaining gnoll, but his footwork is impaired by the tall grass.  The rogue's rapier blow goes badly awry, and Garryn just barely catches himself from a potentially disastrous fall.

(15)
Asher continues to battle the gnoll, throwing a powerful punch designed to be stunningly forceful...but the gnoll ducks under the blow--right into Asher's knee-strike to its face.

The gnoll facing Asher is locked in a death battle with the monk.  Snarling and yipping, the creature swings its axe in a hard, horizontal arc.  The monk nimbly ducks the blade.

The gnoll facing Caylin once again tries to kill the deadly halfling archer--the creature's only hope of surviving now that its prey has turned the tables.  Caylin easily springs aside from the gnoll's downward axe strike.

Coward of the County...

Arriving at the side of the fallen Phanarian, Perrato immediately says the Prayer for Well-Being and Salubrious Mending, "O Vagrane, plagas amici mei sanare imploro!" The Palonard hopes that this will bring Aidrin back to consciousness.

New round.

(22)
Garryn engages, taking a sidelong, oblique approach to the gnoll in order to avoid an attack of opportunity.  Flanking his foe, the rogue stabs deeply with his rapier, dropping the creature as it goes into a paroxysm of final throes.

(21)
Caylin, having delayed his action to allow Garryn the flank attack, moves over to the small rock pile and climbs it.  The halfling, able now to actually see above the grass, peers out over the prairie.  "A gnoll's tryin' t get some'at offa tha' big dead one an' his big, dead, o'ergrown mount, Garryn.  Should we try an' dissuade 'im, like?" Caylin, bloodied and badly wounded, asks calmly.  In addition, the halfling actually appears to be patting his pockets in search of his pipe and tobacco as he queries Garryn.

Re: Quick Draw Viatomagne

Caylin, straining his eyes in the evening twilight, cannot see the looting gnoll.  Nevertheless, the halfling fires two arrows towards the spot where the gnoll was last.  Although the probability of hitting the unseen creature is not particularly high, the halfling is rewarded with a high-pitched scream as the first arrow sails into the tall grass in the distance, followed by an abrupt cessation of the scream as the second arrow cuts into the grass.

Garry, arriving several seconds later, finds the last gnoll dead, four arrows in its body.  The dead gnoll is clutching a leather satchel and a heavy-looking pouch.

That completes this battle.  I will post a map showing you the positions of everyone.  The fire is spreading relatively slowly--the spring and early summer were wet, so the grass isn't tinder dry yet.  However, if left there, the bodies of Villhalas and Totmacher will both be consumed.  Stay tuned for the map, arriving prior to lunchtime (for me, at any rate).

Looted up about firing

Perrato ventures towards the flames, gauging their spread, and attempts to smother some of the fire--in effect trying to create a patch of ground in which the grass has always been burned.  The Palonish man achieves some success in doing so, but has quite a bit of work to do to cut off the advance of the fire to the east.

Aidrin's attempts to lever the corpse of Totmacher into a position that he can move the body is futile, as the wizard struggles with the massive body.

The fire continues to burn, but does not advance beyond its current range this round.

Fighting fire with naked resolve

Perrato manages to put out a small amount of burning grassland.  The Palonish man had engaged in controlled burning off of the hop fields in the Vedian uplands, after the crop had been pulled in, and was familiar with keeping a minor brush fire in line.  However, the priest is somewhat startled to see a disrobed Aidrin joining him in the effort to keep the fire from spreading eastward.

OOC:  Successful Survival checks allow you to extinguish a 5' square.  Remember, there is no wind, and the grass isn't tinder dry.  The fire, if left unchecked, will spread--but it can be contained by establishing a firebreak.  See the latest map HERE.
