Con 2012 elements

I'll ask you to recall some central plot motifs as I move into the exposition for SeaCon ‘12:

  • South Paldor:  Early party adventures at 1st level, with a general motif concerning an investigation of a ruined fortified mansion in search of missing and magical wine.  The context of that long-ago summer (real-time and virtual-time) also involved rumors of orcish activities, raids, and savage border warfare in the west.  Involvement of large scale, apparently reasonably organized groups...including ogres and possibly other humanoid troops, with an unknown organizing influence.

  • Party helps Caylin's family, located on a border holding near the Turgrad Mountains in South Paldor, and encounters and defeats a jumped-up orcish shaman (Korkess) with some necromantic chops.  The shaman was leading a small group of orcs, but appeared to have connections to a larger organizational heuristic.  Subsequently, the party accepts a merchant’s offer (Arillatoris) to rendezvous with his nephew Arkexis in Borderton…in an attempt to procure some spices that had arrived in Borderton with one of the few caravans to have made it through.

  • Party travels to Borderton, battling wyverns and orcs and ogres.  Fun side adventure times in Borderton, chasing after a pyromaniacal party animal named Barbaras.

  • Party's discoveries of caravan disappearances and/or raids on caravans into Borderton, including Arkexis’ caravan.  Disruption of trade from east to west appears to be an ongoing.  Implication of humanoid involvement in these raids, with their hideout associated with an old dwarven outpost.  Party pursues orcs and ogres appeared to be involved in raids and caravan plundering.  HoltCon ‘05

  • Party's subsequent rescue of Arkexis and clear involvement of Thrailians in both disrupting caravan routes and utilizing humanoids to do so.  Party rescues remnants of a blink dog pack.  Party frees a bronze dragon (Aeruginosis) and teams with a Rimsedge mercenary (Bergstrom) as part of exploring a dwarven citadel.  Experience points, opportunities for training in Rimsedge, and wishes granted by the grateful dragon are components of the adventures.  AveryCon ’07.

  • Party departs for Rimsedge after a successful series of adventures in Southern Paldor and Borderton.  Their journey lands them in the vicinity of Hunter’s Bridge and a fortified inn known as Sparrow’s Place, where they become involved in the pursuit of the iron heart of an annis, an encounter with a crimson death,  the enslavement of a family, the shifty allegiances of Trapper Jack, the nigh legendary gnomish trader known as Tinker Dan, and the ogre mage styling himself as “Mr. Gracious”.  Party succeeds in retrieving iron heart, and are rewarded and teleported ‘closer’ to Rimsedge by Trapper Jack.  DavisCon ‘09.

  • Upon teleportation via Trapper Jack, party travels through the rest of the Dreaming Lands and arrives in Rimsedge.  Adventures ensue which involve an understanding that Rimsedge is subject to undead, infernal/abyssal influences, and serious factional dynamics.  Party is enlisted/befriended by the Kykeonos faction (mongrelfolk and their allies) through their leader Lathridios.  Adventures ensue involving staving off demonic incursions through localized planar rifts, an introduction to Rimsedge politics, and a rescue mission to retrieve two of the Kykeonos’ agents—one a goblin agent holed out in a graveyard outside of the City, the other an agent captured and held in a Thrailian fortified compound on the upper mesa of the City.  Party is successful in freeing the Kykeonos agents, and begins to understand that there are extraordinarily active elements (extraplanar, Thrailian, etc.) interested in unbalancing the power structure in Ridmsedge and in the rest of Arret to further their own ends.  RichCon ’10.

  • Aine arrives from the elven lands to the west, having spent time there with Dominique and others.  Her mission is clear:  the Drow are attempting to tear apertures into the surface realm and augment these fissures with planar access to the Abyss, and Rimsedge appears to be an epicenter for this activity.  She reunites with her earlier compatriots, and they all undergo a dramatic transmogrification into Drow…to infiltrate the Underdark.  The powers of Rimsedge are intensely interested in why one of their own—the Matron Lady Simovae of the House Azrinae—has gone missing.  Trade between the Underdark and the Rimsedge trading interests has waned and languished to the extent that the war effort to the East has been severely impacted.  The party investigates accordingly, and learns that a new power has seized control over House Azrinae…one Allevrah of some minor clan, and has removed the majority of the House to a place known as the Land of the Black Blood.  There is rumor that the Land of the Black Blood is a central place from which to open planar rifts along of the ley-lines of Arret…including the many that converge upon Rimsedge.  HoltCon ’11.
