Re: 1.5 | The First Test
"That's assuming a bit.  We can't assume that the keys will be distributed fairly or that there might be keys that don't work," Hisoka said as quietly as she could to Rejima, "we have assumed before and paid for it.  The important thing is that we stay wary, and be ready for surprises.  This test is telling us that the right answer is to pick off the other teams or to work with the other teams, so...watch your back..."

She looked to the interloper.  He seemed rational enough, at least. "I wouldn't call it an instant pass.  Other dangers were mentioned.  That said, I also would not say no to someone who would rather be my friend than be my enemy."

Re: 1.5 | The First Test
Akira's response to the request of whether he's amenable is simply to nod in the affirmative. He then goes back to watching the test-administrator and replies, "I understand!" and then goes back to watching the others. He has made a tentative alliance, but he isn't certain that it will hold up in the field. He has to trust that the others will hold up their end and not try anything.

Others had tried. It wasn't advisable. Puffing up his bottom lip, he chews at it a little and then glances around again.

Which gate to choose?

She looked to Roshan, who shrugged. She looked to Saghaal. The Jackal-Masked boy reached for her hair and pulled out one of the jasmine blossoms.

"Good idea, Saghaal." She took the blossom from him and held it to her lips. As she blew, the petals caught on the draft in the cavern. They swirled and danced through the air until they landed at the feet of the Rock Village genin, Team Tulip, Squad D, and Chariot.

"We're taking Gate Four."

Re: 1.5 | The First Test
Rasa just listened. She stood close to her team mates, acutely aware suddenly how real this all was and how it was going to make a difference to their lives. It was remarkably uncomfortable. To make it worse, she was terrible underground. There was no wind. And all of these people looked so determined! What if they had to fight? Fighting was awful.

There was a pressure on Yahiro's wrist as she brushed her fingers against it nervously, seeking some form of comfort.

Re: 1.5 | The First Test
Glancing from Hisoka to Reijima and back, the crimson-haired shinobi shrugged.  He couldn't blame her for being cautious and suspicious considering the setting they were in currently.  Even if that wasn't the case, they were from two distinctly different ninja villages.  Suspicion was the name of the game when it came to hidden villages, after all.  If one wasn't cautious it was likely they would be betrayed.  Masumi just had a different way of looking at things: if one expected people to betray them, it was much easier to make contingency plans.  While he was friendly and liked making allies rather than fighting enemies because it was something he was good at, it didn't mean he was naive enough to leave himself open to attack.  His cautious planning was one of the strengths that had helped Team Storm through some of its toughest encounters thus far.

"Of course it's not an instant pass," he said with a sigh.  "But, it may as well be as long as we're not careless.  Allies mean a stronger defensive force able to fight off smaller groups of attackers or deal with traps and guardians.  Well, whatever may come, I do look forward to working with you all."  Considering the alliance agreed upon, he nodded to Hisoka, Reijima, and Akira in turn before turning back toward his team.

Shifting his hazel eyes to the rest of the crowd, he began scanning for the Kirigakure shinobi he had helped through the previous phase of the exam.  While he had gained two new allies, it was likely that they would enter their gate together.  That left him with a potentially unknown factor that would likely enter his team's gate.  Masumi was not a fan of unknown factors.  Even if the factor was a negative one, he could plan for it.  Come up with countermeasures for it.  But, with an unknown factor he had to plan for contingencies around it which usually resulted in requiring twice the plans and three times the work.  Which meant that it was better to have Lian's team at their side rather than some unknown he didn't know.  Considering that they were entering into a labyrinth, there was no guarantee that two gates next to each other were actually in close proximity.  It was likely that Team Storm would have to find both the Konohagakure teams in the labyrinth itself than be able to combine their forces from the get go.  That meant his team needed a way to have a stronger initial force.  And he had already established a rapport with Lian.

Making his way through the crowd, he tried to catch the Kirigakure shinobi's eyes with his warm smile.  "Lian!" he called out with a wave.  "Considering our mutual success from cooperation in the last part of the exam, would you like to have our teams work together in this one?  We could enter the gate together."

After he took care of this, there was something else he needed to confirm.  Ensi was here.  What she was doing here after Maqart was anyone's guess, but that was an unknown factor that needed confirming.  Something here wasn't adding up.

Re: 1.5 | The First Test
Yahiro listened closely to their new instructor, trying to understand their task the best he could. ' Three doors, three different keys, one key each team. Two teams a gate. So we need three different keys somehow.' the young genin thought, as he took a look at the other teams. Most seemed to be planning ahead, forming strategies and alliances. ' This is stupid. If we could just cheat ourselves through, this wouldn't be a test. Traps shouldn't be much of a problem for Parisa. And if we encounter a enemy I will simply cru-'

His train of thought stopped instantly as he felt someone touch his wrist. Turning his head he saw Rasa, obviously being nervous. It was understandable to him though, seeing the girl as the polar opposite of himself. " Don't worry. I won't let anything happen to you two." Though, to keep that promise it probably meant that he couldn't just pick a fight with everyone in the room. How bothersome. That meant he had to think of something... ... ... or just do things on the fly. " So, which gate shall we go for?"

"Bah, we have oni-chan and me watchin' front'n'back." Rejima muttered as low as he could to Hisoka, bouncing from one foot to the other as his hands lowered to rest in their pockets. "I'll go with the flow and Kisara-chan can crush everything. You do you and keep that brain workin'." He snuck a glance at their other teammate, before rolling his shoulders. Talking was well and all, but he was itching to get started.

"Think it'd be a good idea goin' in with a friendly sort, don't you?"
This he directed at both Akira and Hisoka.

Hisoka only spoke softly at first, "I'll protect both of you as best I can..."

She then raised her voice just a little, still ending up at a politely quiet volume.  "If nothing else, civility is underrated these days..."

Re: 1.5 | The First Test
All three member of the Kirigakure team turned to face Masumi. Beside Lian, a tall, pale boy wearing a rebreather mask looked long at the Sunan genin and then Masumi's teammates. The other boy, of a height with Lian, asked her a question in the language of the Water Country. His expression remained wary while she answered.

"We would be pleased to enter beside you, Masumi. It is not in our interest to assist you, but we will not act against your team, if you agree to the same." Lian said.

The shorter boy spoke next, the gleam in his black eyes a strange one between interest and disdain.  It was a look Masumi associated with the academy and the Old Lady.

"If you follow, if you keep up, you can use our wake. If you fall behind, we won't waste our time."

Re: 1.5 | The First Test
Looking over at Hisoka, Akira nods at her. They could be comrades again! Lifting one of his small hands again, the tiny boy gives her a thumbs up again, and then looks down at his tabi, wiggling his toes through the open ends of the shoes.

"Michiru, Yoko, we're going with the girl there," he tells them, making a team decision. He isn't the smartest, he knows, but Michiru can be too smart for his own good. He tends to see all the traps, and that means he thinks that everything is a trap.

Yoko is just too crazy.

"My name is Akira, this is Uchiha Michiru and Uzumaki Yoko."
This is directed towards Hisoka and her team, and he indicates the other two with a hooked thumb over his shoulder and a big smile on his face. Its impossible to see his face, or any of his skin, really, but somehow his eyes and the shape of the wrap seem to convey his emotions as clearly as any other face. He has very expressive eyes.

Akira looks to be about ten years old, and aside from Parisa is probably the shortest person in the room.

Re: 1.5 | The First Test
Hisoka could probably pass for twelve if not for her body.  The fact that she's gained any sort of mass around her hips and chest is only drawn attention to by the fact that her clothes were tight fitting when she was a little less developed.  Her fiery red hair that is now boyishly messy from all of the action she's been through is par for the course.  What's weird are the red eyes that seem to trace over everyone who she is introduced to.

She clears her throat and then raises her voice a little bit apparently straining to speak a little louder than normal, "I am Arakawa Hisoka, and my comrades are Reji-kun and Kisa-chan.  Let's work well together."]

She bows her head briefly.

Re: 1.5 | The First Test
Mawahibi watched on as the genin discussed options inside and between their teams. It seemed most grasped the implications of the set up quickly and scrambled to find favourable matches.

"Alright! That's enough. Let's get this moving. Who's taking the first gate?"

A hand went up from the Kirigakure team.
"Team Shiba of Kirigakure will take the first gate."

Mawahibi ushered them past to stand by the gate behind her. She removed a ring of keys hidden in Tahu's mane and tossed one of the keys their way. The tall boy caught it and secreted it in his clothes.

"Are you coming, Sunagakure?"

Re: 1.5 | The First Test
"Of course," the crimson-haired genin replied, catching his team's key in one hand before tossing it to Artapana.

While it would have usually been in his Team Storm's interest to have Masumi himself hold possession of the key, it would be more likely that the Asbahura would be a more natural choice given his chosen method of attack.  In cramped quarters like a maze with blind angles, it was more likely that Maduvanthi and himself would have to serve as front and rear guards since Artapana had less ability for close range combat than they did.  However, Masumi always practiced the idea of flexible strategy--if they needed to change the key holder on the fly, they would.  After all, no plan ever survived first contact.

Lian might have been relatively amicable for a Kirigakure ninja, but her teammate's eyes were ones of which Masumi was intimately familiar.  They were the eyes of someone who believed others were beneath them.  Being relatively good at what one would call deceptive behavior, the Sunagakure shinobi knew firsthand that appearances could be deceiving.  The ones like the shorter Kirigakure boy tended to make the same mistakes.  It was a feeling he associated with how Yahiro looked at everyone on Team Storm when they had first come together.  However, that did not matter.  The short Kirigakure ninja could do whatever he wanted to assuage his own ego.  Masumi had taken care of worse customers before.

Heck, if they were going to be so bold as to tell Team Storm to use their wake, the Kirigakure team were more than welcome to take the lead.  All that meant was that they would likely take the brunt of the damage, leaving Maduvanthi, Artapana, and Masumi in relatively good shape.  Why not take them up on the offer?  That was the problem with letting one's ego get in the way.  It often meant that they could not grab hold of opportunities like this.  After all, it wasn't the powerful that necessarily survived.  It was the ones that took the chances they were given when they were presented.

Glancing his shoulder at his teammates with a grin grin, Masumi indicated that it was time to go with his eyes.  While he would usually not have wanted to take the first gate available, in this situation it probably would be just as good as any.  And taking the first gate did come with the added benefit of being less likely to run into a trap set up by another team.  They just had to contend with whatever traps were already in there.

This test had the potential to be more trouble than it was worth.

With that last thought, the crimson-haired shinobi strode through the first gate behind his unlikely Kirigakure allies.

Once the great doors had closed behind them, Mawahibi turned back to the remaining teams.

"Okay, speak up if you want the second or sixth gate."

She gestured left and right around the walls of the labyrinth.

In reply to Minamoto Yahiro (msg # 41):

"Um, um..." Rasa looked around at the gathered students, from all different villages with different dialects and different clothing. She could barely understand the snippets of conversation that was going on around her.

Eventually she pointed towards a fellow sand-team, apparently led by Ameretat.

"Perhaps we should follow them? A team from our own village may be less likely to try to attack us outright."

"We're taking the second one, yea?" a voice called from the Sound team.

"And team chariot will too." Ensi announced.

Mawahibi ushered the whole group around the curved wall to the next gate. The two teams were given their keys and sent in.

"Who's next?"

Re: 1.5 | The First Test
"Four is nice..."

Parisa and, indeed, her talking puppet Seda had both been completely silent ever since arriving. The White Devil terrified her, especially for the response he evoked within her ever watchful guardian. She had visibly perked up, however, at the mention of traps. Parisa knew her village... if the traps were built well, they would have her father's touch to them. If they were designed to kill, they almost had to be his.

"Oh, so if we do well it'll be like passing Mirza-Sepehr's test too."

The girl gave the tiniest of nods, turning her gaze to Rasa then Yahiro.

"Might die..."

Her words of encouragement spoken, Parisa moved onward.
