Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
Her allamah sat down opposite her, not the least put out by the size of her order. He himself asked for coffee and some almond cake and sat quietly waiting for Rasa to speak. Today had been a very big stride forward. She needed time to process.

"No? What part gives you trouble?"

Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
"It's not trouble, I...." She paused, staring too-intently at the dish of sugar cubes on the table. "Just didn't think I was going to do it. I'd never been able to take off even."

Of course it took a lot more skill to lift from low ground than it did to take off from a high point. "I never thought to go above the village."

She chanced a look across at the golden eyes across the table. "You've been very kind to me, and very patient. When I get my own team, I can only wish I would be able to do to them what you do to me."

"Throw them off cliffs?" He chuckled.

"There is only one secret to what I do, Rasa, and I have already given it to you.

I apologise if I scared you. Sometimes a dramatic example is needed to prove something. It will take more time and work for you to fully master flight, but it is yours to learn.

I only wish I could do as much for Parisa. I have no idea what to do with a puppeteer."

Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
She looked at him thoughtfully, thinking of Parisa who was a very odd girl indeed. But Rasa liked her very much.

"I don't mind being thrown off cliffs if it's by you, sensei. You'd never let me hit the rocks if I fall.

And Parisa, well, she seems to be a very good puppeteer as it is. Her papa, isn't he very good with machines? I think she'll learn the art from him, but what I think she needs from you, sensei, is a lot of hugs. It must be awfully lonely for her. Baba says that hugs hold more power for change than the sharpest sword."

He winced at the thought of hugging Parisa. It was both exactly what she needed and the last thing he could offer Sepehr's protogé.

"Your baba is a wise man. But it's just as important for you and Akarui to take care of Parisa. You're all sisters now. You're as much her teacher as I am."

Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
"Will we be together for very long sensei? I know that sometimes chuunin and jonin go on missions in big groups, but are they the team mates that they trained with? What about you? Did you train with a team? Who were they?"

Well, it had to be asked eventually. Genin were trained in teams mostly but they did not seem to do that when they were more qualified. Not that she could tell anyway. Maybe it was just because they were baby ninja and teams were more safe. How awful it must be going on missions without a sensei to guide you, or even going all by yourself! If you were injured or even died in the desert nobody would know for a very long time. It didn't bare thinking about.

Come to think of it, she couldn't remember much about her sisters team mates either. Oh she should have paid more attention.

Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
”I really don’t know. Traditionally when dudaenn gain the rank of chuunin they begin leading teams of their own. So I suppose if one of you passes the chuunin exams she will become the new team leader and replace me so the kazekage can give me difficult missions again.

If two of you pass or all three of you pass you’ll be given different assignments. You’ll each acquire new duties suited to your talents, whether it be teaching, leading genin, or one of the other jobs given to chuunin. As far as possible you’ll be put together when your abilities suit the mission, but Team Tulip will no longer exist, officially.

But we all have a special bond between us. Official or not Team Tulip will always exist even when we are not working together.”

Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
Rasa nodded in understanding, but she looked a little sad. She would miss her sisters and sensei terribly when their team was split up, but she supposed she'd be a lot more confident and capable then.

"You're not a chuunin, are you sensei? Baba says you're an elite jounin and aren't those really rare? Does the kazekage send you on very difficult missions?"

”That’s what they call me. I think the most difficult mission I have ever had is training the three of you, but it’s not the most dangerous. Before Team Tulip most of my missions were A or S rank assignments.”

The girl looked a little confused.

"Does that mean... teaching us is an S rank assignment? And - do you miss the other missions? Or do you still go on them and we just don't know about it?"

Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
Akil smiled to himself. "No, Rasa. Anyone of chuunin rank or above can lead a team of genin. It's not an S-rank mission. I suppose it might be B-rank, but what I mean is training the three of you needs a lot of thought and care over an extended period of time. I'm entrusted to shape you and unleash your potential.

But the reality is, Rasa, you're going to die. As a dudaenn you're probably going to die young and violently. Training you makes you safer, yes, but it also means you will be sent on more dangerous missions. I'm also teaching you how to kill, how to end the existence and potential of another person. It's an act which damages you inside.

So you see it's difficult for several reasons. Even if it's not a dangerous mission or a highly ranked one, only certain kinds of people can take this role. That's what the chuunin exams are for: to see whether you're ready to lead other people."

Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
The girl gave her sensei a strange look, bordering on shock. "That's a horrible thing to say! I can't imagine ever leading a team and I certainly can't imagine killing anybody. Isn't there more to being a ninja than ending lives? What about saving them? What about protecting people?"

She paused as tea was brought over to the table, smiling at the little girl until they had their privacy again. She dropped a sugar lump into the amber liquid and stirred it thoughtfully.

"...two of my sisters are not shinobi. They didn't want to go to the academy. My eldest sister didn't go and she is married now. She's going to have a baby soon. And my mother is match-making Farah already."

Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
Akil listened to her more or less thinking aloud, quite undisturbed by either the topic or her response.

"They are the same thing, little one. What do you think we are here to protect people from? We protect our village and our country from anything that threatens it. That threat might be dangerous criminals, it might be foreign shinobi, it might be Govadistani clans acting against the Shah. But mainly they are all people, and protecting your teammates and your village will often mean killing.

It is necessary for you to understand this and come to terms with it if you are to be dudaenn. This is an imperfect world. All we can do is choose our hekemet and try to live true to it until we return to god."

Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
The girl was quiet, which was a rarity. She sipped her tea and thought about it, her little brow furrowing as she thought hard. No, it wasn't a shock to know that ninja kill people - of course they killed people, it was just that it was a very difficult topic to dwell on. Surely there was a way she could be a ninja without killing anybody, but it would be very tricky and ultimately pointless. Whoever heard of a ninja who would not spill blood?

After a few minutes she seemed to come to a realisation, giving her sensei a big smile. "Well," she said brightly, "It's not going to be necessary all of the time is it? Fortune favours the merciful." (Or alternatively, fortune turns around and sticks the merciful one in the eye.)

It was time to change the subject.

"Tell me about your team, allamah. Who was your sensei?"

”My sensei? Well my team was a little bit different from normal. Talayeh and I were playmates and then we trained together. So for the most part my sensei was Mirza Kosai. Sometimes we trained apart with other people though and I spent quite a bit of time on my own. There are some things your allamah can’t teach you.

But I’m not a very good example. About a quarter of my training involved running off and hiding to avoid work. He is very quick for such an old man.”

Akil sipped his coffee again and frowned. ”He’s a stronger dudaenn than he pretends.”

"So you didn't really have a full team? It was just you and one other? You must have been very special to have been trained by Mirza Kosai. Baba says he is easily underestimated and that he does not remember him looking any different, even when he was a boy. The way baba speaks about him one would think that Mirza Kosai has been around since the beginning of time!"

Rasa sipped her tea, took a bite out of her pastry and thought a little harder. "...you don't like working very much, do you allamah?" Another pause. "Who is Talayeh? Is she one of the sensei's too? Is she very pretty?"

Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
Akil laughed. ”He’s not quite as old as that. Only nearly.”

After the grin was suppressed he skipped to the question he wanted to answer. Rasa threw out so many he wasn’t entirely sure if she noticed when only some of them got answered.

”Talayah Avin is the name of our kazekage. She is the most beautiful woman in the world and a truly powerful kunoichi. There are few who could match her in a fight. There are some similarities between our kekkei genkai and we both demonstrated them early as children. Because of that Kosai and the Twelfth decided the best way to train us was beside each other. We are each the mirror of the other, seeing our weaknesses and strengths in the things we don’t share because of the things we do. It is because of Talayeh I stopped using iron for my jutsu and changed to copper: iron is heavy and just not fast enough to keep up with her.”

Re: 0.4 | Fledgling
Miss Habbal almost spat out her tea. Almost.

"Really?? You trained with the kazekage? That's amazing! I had no idea! So you must be very good friends then? Do you see her very much? Is she nice? I've only ever seen her in passing or during ceremonies, but I've never seen her up close. Baba says she's sharp. What does he mean by that?"

Suddenly tea and pastry lay forgotten. She hung on Akil's every word.

The jounin calmly sipped his coffee.

"Talayeh has a cutting temper and a quick, keen mind. She is a very dear friend. I visit her when I get the chance, but she's a busy woman and I have my own work to do."

He leaned his elbow on the table and rested his chin on the back of his hand.

"She loves the village a great deal and everyone in it. Whatever she might say or do, she is a very loving person with a hand as silken as her will is steeled."

"She must work so hard to run the village. It's a shame you don't get to see her very much. You should visit her more, you should! I know if I were her I'd be very happy to see all my old friends when there is that much work to do. Small pleasures, baba says.

Were she a very good student? Were you? Did you sleep as much as you do now?"

"We were both quick and able students." he said diplomatically. "But I sleep more now. I'm better at hiding and Mirza-Kosai only rarely comes looking for me these days.

The small pleasures are very important. You should try to find pleasure in at least one thing every day. It's good for the mind and spirit."

"I find pleasure in my tea! And in pastries, training, sewing and talking. And also in petting cats and in looking at you, allamah. And now in flying I hope, but not if I have to throw myself off a cliff every type. I can imagine that must get very tiresome after a while."

Teacup now empty, the girl poured herself another and topped her masters cup.

"Can I meet her one day? Please please?"

"She'll be watching...? Oh but sensei, I don't even think I'll make it that far this time. I mean, I remember the exams from when I was very young last time the Sand hosted them and everybody was very scary and very competitive."

"Little one, you are a delight to teach. You are a talented and sweet-tempered girl. You will be a kunoichi worthy of envy in time and we will achieve that together."
He smiled at her warmly. Then his expression softened into something like regret. He finished his coffee and stood up.

"Keep practising that jutsu. We will have you flying yet."
