Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
All their voices combined with the machine did little to stir their allamah until Parisa’s unfamiliar shouting caught his attention. Akil opened one eye a fraction to identify the voice and rubbed his fingers across his lids to be sure.

”Parisa?”

The jounin hauled himself off the floor and finally caught on to what was going on, forcing the lever back up and bringing the machine to a halt. It groaned and something cracked.

Akil stared at it. ”Why does it sound like something broke?”

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
Seemingly relieved at Yahiro's change of mind, Rasa did nevertheless stand a few steps closer to him, perhaps in case he were to try something dramatic and she could throw herself at him wildly and sit on him and stop him from risking his life unnecessary, for she was really very fond of their new team mate.

"Oh!" she put her hands to her mouth at the snap. "I think I missed something! Is it broken?"

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
Parisa let out a little gasp at the snap, feeling for the machine's bones. She had been so sure of her skill as her puppet navigated the maze of blades that she had forgotten Madafi's strength, who now slumped against the opposite wall.

"Broken! Fixing!"

Placing her voice, Seda, upon the ground with nary a glance to their teacher Parisa ran off to where she had hurt the poor, damaged machine. It was a foolish puppeteer that didn't carry a basic toolkit, and Parisa was anything but a fool. Abusing the advantage offered by her robe, the girl began pulling what few tools she carried with her. She wouldn't be able to replace any broken parts, but she could at least remove the mechanism from the sequence to prevent it from breaking further.

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
Upon hearing the question of both Rasa and Akil Yahiro slightly rose his head to be able to look at the two of them. " From what I saw Madafi broke a lance or something at the end. Not quite sure where it ended up though. " Yahiro said, telling them what he was able to see.

He couldn't say what that meant exactly or how much of the machanism was damaged because of that, but that didn't really matter, since he wasn't the one, who was fixing it. He was sure that Parisa or Seda could tell them more, once she is done.

"Oh my, that's unexpected!" Rasa replied, "I suppose it can take something very small to bring down a goliath, can't it? But it's far less intimidating when it's not moving and much easier to study. All of the thrashing was making me quite dizzy. Oh!

Parisa!"
She called to the girl who had rushed ahead, but did not follow. Even still, the death machine loomed ominously, like an enormous lion just waiting for the right moment to strike. "Oh please be careful! If you fix it then it might start up with you in the middle!"

"Khuda."

The jounin sighed and walked up to the front of the machine to peer through it at Parisa.

"It shouldn't start with the lever locked out. This one doesn't have anti-tamper components to it. Just mind your fingers, Parisa."

Turning back to the other two genin, Akil wiped sleep from his face and folded his arms.

"Well? What did you figure out?"

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
"Um," Rasa screwed up her eyes in thought, although truthfully she seemed more concerned about the machine starting up again around Parisa than focusing on what they were supposed to learn.

"That it has a pattern, and that... that it's very big, but if you stick a wooden limb in it then it breaks. We won't have to fight many death machines in the desert will we sensei?"

She gave Yahiro a bit of a desperate look, as if he knew the answer. She was just grasping at straws here.

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
Noticing someone stare at him Yahiro picked his head once more, looking at his team mate from his seating position. With a simple a shrug he only scratched his head a little. " Well, I can't really remember which trap is located where exactly. All I can say is that there is a huge variety of them, differing from flamethrowers to lances. Evading them all at once is obviously quite difficult, but it is also not impossible as demonstrated by Parisa.

However, the components of the machine itself doesn't seem to be very durable, so if someone really wanted to pass through, breaking apart the machine seems to be the safest bet. Since it runs on chain reactions, having a link missing or broken will pretty much screw the entire thing."
Yahiro said after giving it some thought. " Or, you know, you could pull that lever over there." the light blue haired boy added as he looked over to his sensei.

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
A smile threatened to disrupt Akil's attempt to look knowing and tutorial.
"I knew you were smart kids. It's a pretty stupid exercise. Yes, the most sensible things to do if you encounter a complicated and dangerous trap is to break it or turn it off.

But, if you can't do that? Because, say, your sensei is a stubborn old goat and wants you do it 'properly'?"

"Was your sensei a stubborn old goat, allamah?" Rasa looked a little surprised. "And, are we likely to encounter many death machines? Are they common?"

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
Yahiro only shrugged with his shoulders as their sensei didn't seem quite satisfied with their answer yet. " Errrrm, hope that said goat has trained us well enough to have developed reflexes, which allow us to react and avoid the traps in a instant? As I said, Madafi made it, so it shouldn't be impossible." Yahiro said, before he considered what Rasa had to say.

"Hm.. you have a point. Can't remember ever having seen a death machine in the desert before. But I guess learning more about this variety of weapons and knowing how to handle them will come in handy. Not that I'd remember any more than what to do to avoid getting cut, impaled or burned by those." the genin finished, scratching his head as he added the last part, muttering it more to himself than speaking it out loud.

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
Parisa's gaze shot up at Akil's words... she had grown far too accustomed to the name 'Little one'. Her face was one of conflict as she glanced down at the mechanism she had been elbow deep in, then back at Akil, then back to the mechanism. It took every ounce of her minimal self control to stand, broken lance in one hand, strings for her puppet in the other, and return to her team. The rest of the parts she had extracted had fit in her pockets, but the lance was a little large to extract.

It took a moment for her to pick her voice up from where she had left it but as she did, like magic the little puppet began speaking again.

"How long was I out!? One moment Madafi was doing so well and then something broke and I fainted!"

As was his custom, the jounin ignored Seda as though she were no more than a piece of wood.

"You got Madafi all the way through the machine without any damage. Will you tell me how you managed to do this safely?"

Parisa shifted a little under her jounin's gaze, hugging the broken lance as if it would protect her. It wasn't long, however, before the girl murmured out her answer.

"Patterns..."

Fortunately for Akil who, Parisa knew, would die if Seda was silent for too long, Parisa's little voice began chirruping away a more detailed explanation. "Everything has its time to move. Once you know when each part moves, getting Madafi through is just like getting him to dance. There is already a right way to walk, Madafi just knew how to do it, and how to recover if he took a wrong step!"

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
Akil folded his hands together and bowed slightly to the small genin.

"Yes." He looked to Rasa and Yahiro. "The death machine is a machine. It's fixed in its path which means there is a fixed safe path if you can see it.

The machine serves a dual purpose: to test your observation as well as your agility. Damaging the machine while you are inside it will cause you more problems when fail safes trigger or the machine is forced into an unpredictable and destructive path.

Sometimes you must go with the flow and wait until you are in better informed and in the best position before you attempt to change things."

He looked at Parisa again. "It is far easier to break something than to understand it, but without understanding it first you cannot prepare for the consequences.

But!"
He smiled. "That is enough boring preaching for one day. Now we go to Zareen's for ice cream."

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
Rasa gave Yahiro an impressed look as he spoke, for the more he did so, the more certain she was that he would be able to make it as easily as Madafi had. But after Seda's voice chirped up once again, she just went back to looking confused. If the machine was not meant - as she had first thought - to be simply beaten, but to train them through a series of predictable patterns, did that mean people it was meant to train them for also had predictable patterns? Or was she looking at all this in the wrong context or...?

"I don't think I understand," she scratched her temple awkwardly. "Does this mean we won't be fighting death machines? I don't think most people would let us study and learn about them before we have to fight them will they? But what if we do come across a death machine? What about puppets? Does this help prepare us for puppets?"

Not even the prospect of ice cream seemed to get through.

"Sensei, did you have to beat this machine? How did you do it?"

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
"Humans can be more predictable than us machines. A master of a style will have stances they go through, just like the machine has parts. Us puppets rely on our puppeteers to watch and understand how our opponent is fighting, because we can't move quite like they can. Our only option is to abuse the patterns in their movement. Right Parisa?"

Parisa gave a shrug at her puppet's questing words. She wasn't particularly sure on it herself... it kind of made sense. She was only familiar with very basic taijutsu and bukijutsu herself, but even then there were stances you would move through. If you knew the stances your opponent was using, wouldn't that be the same as knowing how the cogs turn?

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
"Parisa has it exactly right. If you learn how your opponent's jutsu works you can predict their behaviour, and that will give you an advantage.

For example, Parisa is a puppeteer. For her a fight is very complicated and she has a lot of information to keep track of. If you can confuse her, you can get past her puppets to attack her directly.

Or Yahiro's style is to use taijutsu and nintaijutsu. He will try to get close to you, so he can be lured into a position of your choosing if you retreat to where you want him.

Half a dudaenn's battle plays out in the mind. Even a weak ninja can win a fight if he can out-think his enemy and manipulate him."

Re: 0.5 | Sunagakure's Deadly Flowers
Yahiro listened to his sensei's explaination and scratched his head like he did so often when he was thinking or processing information. As he noticed that little habit of his though, he understood the jonin a little better. Not that it would make it easier putting it to practice.

" So, simply put, we should watch our opponent to gain information. With enough information we can avoid being hit. If we can avoid being hit, we can counter attack. So, what about those of us, who aren't that good at observation and outsmarting others? I mean, I doubt there is anyone I could figure out, before they could figure me out. My fighting style isn't really.. complicated. Which reminds me, I know how Parisa and sensei fight, but what's your specialty Rasa?"

"Flight," Rasa looked delighted with the question. "Well, technically it's achieved by manipulating chakra through the weave of fabric, like the clothes we wear, but a combination of clothing design and chakra allows us my family a range of abilities. I use it to ride the winds. It's fun! Even if sensei had to throw me off the edge of the cliff for me to get it right the first time.

' Using clothes to fight? Huh, that's interesting..' Yahiro thought to himself as he listened to Rasa. ' Wait a minute.. did she just say.. ' was his last thought as his brain literally clicked after another moment. Suddenly the young genin jumped up from his seated position and grabbed his teammate by her shoulders.

" You can fly!?" Yahiro exclaimed with the expression of a small child, who was impressed by the most amazing thing the young mind could imagine. " That's so cool!"

Rasa clasped Yahiro's shoulders in return, and the delight increased three-fold.

"You think so really?" She leant in to give him a brief hug, warm and lung-squishing. "You are so nice! You are! So nice!" He was let go to allow him breath. "Oh but I am not very good at it yet. I need lots of practise."

There was a moment of consideration before she said, "It would be a good idea to discuss our tactics at one point wouldn't it? If we are all aware of what we can do as individuals, then that allows us to work together more effectively as a team. There are a lot of things Yahiro can do that Parisa and I just can't, but we're able to offer support from afar and bolster his abilities with our own. If we understand each other then we can be confident as a single unit."

The young teen froze at the hug once again and only her next words brought his usual calm, almost cold expression back. ' Me..? Nice...? ' Yahiro wondered in silence until he was granted the ability to inhale the much needed oxygen once more. Scratching his head as he thought about Rasa's words he finally shrugged.

" While I would prefer to figure that stuff out during a sparring match, especially after having been staring at a certain death machine for so long, I guess it wouldn't hurt to at least get a general idea of how to fight together without getting in each others way."

Thinking for a moment Yahiro added, "And I wouldn't mind having that promised ice cream while doing so."

Akil smiled, somewhat relieved to see the team getting along well on their first day together. And that Parisa hadn't taken things too badly. That in particular had concerned him.

"To Zareen's then. My treat." He moved to the door and ushered his students to him and out of the Hall of Pain.
